"She's a legend." A+E & Lifetime have unveiled the full-length trailer for the definitive new Janet Jackson documentary titled simply Janet, which will be airing on TV and streaming starting at the end of January 2022. Instead of going for a feature documentary, like for example the Tina Turner doc Tina, this one is an extensive, 4-hour long mini-series which has been five years in the making. The film follows Janet as her family is going through the loss of her father, Joseph, the patriarch of the Jackson dynasty who passed in 2018. But it also takes us through the entire life story of Janet Jackson, and all she has been through: fame and fortune, struggles, failures, success, and everything else. Janet features exclusive interviews and never-before-seen footage from throughout Jackson's childhood and career, with the documentary taking her back to her hometown of Gary, Indiana to her independence with Rhythm Nation,...

We’re officially entering the final Doctor Who episodes with Jodie Whittaker as lead, with the first of three specials airing on January 1, 2022. And while we have until fall 2022 before the Doctor regenerates, we’re, of course, wondering who will be taking over as the alien. Whittaker has shared her pick on Radio 1’s Going Home with Vick and Jordan (via EW): It’s a Sin‘s Lydia West. But, as Russell T. Davies, returning and taking over as showrunner when Chris Chibnall leaves at the same time as Whittaker, told The Guardian recently, “we have genuinely not cast anyone yet. We’re just starting auditions.” He also shared that “the first [episode] will go out in November 2023 — that’s the 60th anniversary of the show,” meaning there’s quite a bit of time before we see the new Doctor full time. But when could we possibly get an announcement?...

W.C. Fields divided the country into factions—con men and those who would be conned. Throughout his career the comedian played both parts, the hustler and the rube, but America loves its rogues— it’s his card shark persona that decorates theater lobbies and postage stamps to this day. For such a divisive figure his audience was diverse—for better or worse, ticket buyers of all shapes and sizes saw something of themselves in dreamers and frauds like The Great McGonigle, Harold Bisonette, and Egbert Sousé, three of The Great Man’s most memorable incarnations. On March 18 the long-awaited Zack Snyder’s Justice League premieres on HBO Max. On Saturday IGN interviewed the director about the upcoming release and debuted a new trailer.
Check out the Easter eggs https://www.ign.com/articles/justice-league-snyder-cut-easter-eggs-clues-mother-box-origins
In Zack Snyder’S Justice League, determined to ensure Superman’s (Henry Cavill) ultimate sacrifice was not in vain, Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) aligns forces with Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) with plans to recruit a team of metahumans to protect the world from an approaching threat of catastrophic proportions. The task proves more difficult than Bruce imagined, as each of the recruits must face the demons of their own pasts to transcend that which has held them back, allowing them to come together, finally forming an unprecedented league of heroes. Now united, Batman (Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Cyborg (Ray Fisher) and The Flash (Ezra Miller) may be too late...

Warning: contains spoilers for A Discovery of Witches season 2 episode 8.
Near the end of A Discovery of Witches season two, episode eight, Peter Knox walks into the hospital room where new parents Sophie and Nathaniel are recovering from the birth of their daughter Margaret. As a powerful witch who represents his people on political assembly the Congregation, he’s there to verify that the baby is – as he’s been told – a witch born to daemons, and then to kidnap the child so that she can be raised by her own species.
Knox holds up a small carved ball, which instantly stops Nathaniel in his tracks and drags him over the floor where he collapses at Knox’s feet. The witch then flourishes the ball at Sophie, and as he utters the command ‘sleep’, it emits a wave of energy that also knocks her unconscious.
We’ve seen Knox work magic of this kind before.

This review contains A Discovery of Witches spoilers.
The moment Phoebe asked Marcus “Can you turn into a bat?” was the moment A Discovery of Witches’ newest couple won my heart. Possibly it happened slightly earlier when Phoebe replied to Marcus’ declaration that he was the Grand Master of the Knights of Lazarus with the words “And I’m Princess Leia”, but the bat thing cinched it.
In a series so weighted by ominous portent and fraught faces delivering either bloodthirsty threats or speeches prophesying the end of times, a bit of levity goes a long way. It’s the dollop of salted caramel ice cream on the side of the brownie of doom. Finally, somebody here is having fun!
It’s been a long time since those somebodies were Matthew and Diana, who have really been through the wringer in season two. When was the last time we saw those two smile?...

About This Film
By 1959, the influence of Hollywood in Korean cinema was in full bloom, and “A Female Boss“ is a testament to the fact, something that becomes obvious even from the music and the presentation of the titles in the very beginning of the movie. However, Han Hyeong-mo’s title is not exactly a textbook romantic comedy, since the concepts of toxic masculinity (in the way Kim Ki-duk presented it decades later), the role reversal and the eventual triumph of male domination make the film stand particularly out.
Synopsis
Yoanna is the editor of a magazine titled “The Modern Woman” and essentially, the archetype of the modern Western woman. She is rich and successful, lives in luxury that even allows her to feed her dog expensive cake, and is a hard-core feminist (a tablet above her office even states “Women are superior to men”) who has gone as far...

How did events of 2020—any of them—change your film, either in the way you approached it, produced it, post-produced it, or are now thinking about it? My film was shot just before the pandemic (wrapped March 1 2020—what luck!), which is a fact that the few people who have seen it so far sometimes find hard to believe. The movie is quite concerned with isolation. It is about characters who never leave the house, whose main form of social connection happens through screens, who exist in a virtual realm that is sort of real and sort of unreal. While writing […]

Photo: Edgar Wright/Rogue Pictures Of the many filmmakers working today, the ones I probably admire the most are those who are “One of Us”. I’m talking about writers and directors who are unabashed in their love of nerdy/geeky pop culture—of other movies, music, comic books, and video games—and try to incorporate said passion into their films. Filmmakers like Quentin Tarantino, Guillermo del Toro, Peter Jackson, and Steven Spielberg come to mind. But for me especially it’s writer-director Edgar Wright. I don’t know if he’s a major household name here in the States, but he definitely is in his native England. And for my money, he’s one of the best filmmakers working today in delivering incredibly stylish and genre-defying works. He’s great in the same way Tarantino is great: in drawing from and paying homage to other works but doing so...

All eyes in Italy’s TV and sports worlds will be on Amazon on Thursday when envelopes for bids to top Italian soccer league Serie A are opened.
Amazon is expected to be among the bidders for domestic broadcasting rights to Serie A in a move that could cause huge disruption within the country’s TV and streaming landscape.
Serie A league top manager Luigi De Siervo confirmed that talks with Amazon are ongoing during an appearance on a Rai radio show earlier this week, but he has cautioned that the league wants to avoid fragmenting rights deals to ensure Serie A fans don’t need multiple subscriptions to see all the games.

This A Discovery of Witches review contains spoilers.
Grrrngh, click, vroom. Hear that? The sound of a series revving out of the muddy furrow in which it’s languished for two episodes, and getting back on track. Episode three gave us much less Matthew in the tower, and much more Diana spontaneously sprouting tree branches from her fingertips and playing interdimensional cat’s cradle with the gleaming strings of life. Witch stuff, not spy stuff! And all the better for it.
Episode three was also all the better for a shift in Matthew’s behaviour. There was just the one growl, and an entirely pardonable one seeing as it was directed at Kit Marlowe, a character whose self pity would have anybody baring their teeth. We saw the return of Matthew the diplomat, a man acting like he’d learnt a few things from his centuries of experience instead of...

Here Are Five Essentials: When you think of “car movie”, you probably think of big action franchises like ‘Fast And Furious’ and James Bond. You probably also think of men, since cars in films tend to be synonymous with masculinity. However, in Cinema, the car is not just a marauding, sexy vehicle for destruction. Cars are obviously brilliant mechanisms for movement-led storytelling, but they can also be vehicles for introspection. There have been a number of character-led films that center on lonely, troubled male protagonists who happen to spend the majority of their time roaming around behind the wheel (preferably at night). This format has offered some of the very best films out there. The following list will rank five great car films that focus...

Once two hungry actors who’d done a lot of supporting work up to that point, the pair became overnight stars and Hollywood golden boys thanks in large part to co-writing and co-starring in Good Will Hunting. It netted each an Oscar for screenwriting.
The memories of those early breaks reemerged in a recent awards screening Q&A that Damon moderated with Affleck for the latter’s new film The Way Back. Clearly a personal passion project for Affleck, the sports drama about a high school basketball coach with a drinking problem netted Affleck some of the best reviews of his career, and has now made both Damon and Affleck nostalgic for the type of dramas they enjoyed making starting out—and hope to continue, including with their anticipated reunion due later this...

HBO has released a minute-long teaser for the second special episode of Euphoria, the Emmy Award-winning teen drama that concluded its first season in August 2019 and aired its first special, “Trouble Don’t Last Always” (alternatively titled “Part 1: Rue”), this past December.
The new special, titled “Fuck Anyone Who’s Not a Sea Blob” (alternatively titled “Part 2: Jules”), follows the character played by Hunter Schafer over the Christmas holiday as she reflects on the past year. Continuing from the prior special, Rue (played by Zendaya) looks back on...

“The Crown” and “Ozark” lead all programs with six nominations for the 26th annual Critics Choice Awards, which announced its 2020 television nominations on Monday.
Critics Choice Awards film nominees will be announced on Feb. 8, with the film and television awards handed out on March 7 at a ceremony whose format has yet to be determined.
“The Crown” and “Ozark” each received six nominations, including Best Drama Series. The drama series “Lovecraft Country,” the comedy series “Schitt’s Creek” and “What We Do in the Shadows” and the limited series “Mrs. America” all received five nominations, while “Better Call Saul” and “The Plot Against America” received four each.
Because the Critics Choice Awards’ television categories consider eligibility on a calendar-year basis while the Emmy Awards use a June-through-May television season, and because they are voted by television critics and journalists rather than TV professionals, the nominations differed dramatically from September’s Primetime Emmy Awards.

We're still promoting Hallmark's latest royal holiday movie, A Christmas Carousel.
Neal Bledsoe plays the royal in question, Prince Wittaker, who discovers there is a lot of love in the world when you get to look beyond the walls of Ancadia.
Of course, it doesn't hurt that Rachel Boston's Lila gets called to the royal republic to help restore the beloved Ancadian carousel.
It's funny that Neal is playing a stodgy Prince when we first meet him in the film because he is as far from that description as you can get.
Our interview started with Neal connecting with me by name, finding something to say about my hometown (Go Steelers!), and joking around about his new royal title.
After we joked about retaining access to the Prince costume for special occasions, such as enriching Christmas with the family, Neal jumped headfirst into A Carousel Christmas, inquiring about...

Oscar winner and animal rights activist Joaquin Phoenix was so moved by an early screening of documentary filmmaker Viktor Kossakovsky’s latest film “Gunda” that he reached out to sign on as an executive producer. Shot in black and white with no dialogue, the film follows the daily life of a pig as she navigates life on a farm, giving birth to a litter of piglets, snorting and rolling around in the mud. If it sounds simplistic, it is, and that’s exactly why critics have been singing the film’s praises since it premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival in February.
“Gunda” has a perfect 100 percent freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a Metacritic score of 86, solidifying the Neon production as a serious contender to win Best Documentary Feature at the Oscars. Jonathan Romney of “Screen Daily” writes, “You don’t have to be an animal lover to...

2020 is finally almost over and, like most people, I’m happy to see this hell year consigned into the history books. Of course, there’s no guarantee that 2021 is going to be much better, as despite a vaccine being developed, Covid-19 isn’t likely to go away anytime soon, there are several enormous divides in American society and we’re teetering on the brink of economic collapse. But hey, we might finally get to see Black Widow in theaters in May!
At least Netflix is kicking the year off with a bang, too. As is usual, there’s an avalanche of new titles hitting the service in January, including a bunch of bone-chilling movies and documentaries.
Top of the pile is 2003 Halle Berry, Robert Downey Jr. and Penelope Cruz flick Gothika, which will be available from January 1st. Unjustly maligned on its original release, it’s since had a rehabilitation,...

This Wednesday in the Seal Team fall finale, it was all hands on deck — and we do mean all — when Ray went missing after the suicide bombing of the Tunisian cafe.
In the immediate wake of last week’s shocking explosion, we saw the charred and crumbled cafe, and Ray’s body on the floor behind the fallen table at which he had and State Dept. colleague Olivia Green been seated. And then a figure approached, nudging his body… which was still alive, we saw.

Times are hard, and most of the time so is Frank (Arieh Worthalter). In Nadège Trebal’s Twelve Thousand, this charismatic French grifter sees sex less as commodity than a natural byproduct of being constantly turned on by the world itself. Every conversation, glance, act of thievery, and vaudevillian dance number present an opportunity for organic desire to flourish, even with complete strangers.
Mostly though, Frank has reserved his wild passion for girlfriend Maroussia (Trebal). The two share a small flat with her mother, young daughter, and two foster infants they have brought in to make extra cash. Daily life is a hustle for this family, but one that seems mostly enjoyable if it weren’t for glaring financial stresses. After getting busted by the owners of a local junkyard for fleecing customers, Frank decides to travel north hundreds of miles and take temp work as an oil refinery worker.

Alex Wheatle (Steve McQueen)
Alex Wheatle, the fourth entry in Steve McQueen’s Small Axe anthology, offers a modest take on the process of unlearning cultural attitudes and biases through the eyes of a naïve teenager. In 1980, Alex Wheatle moves to a social services hostel in Brixton after spending his childhood in a group home, where he was subject to constant abuse from his white peers and caretaker. In Brixton, however, Wheatle finds himself immersed in the Black British community, from which he was displaced growing up in all-white Surrey, where he slowly but surely assimilates the patois, fashion, and most importantly, music of his culture. He quickly witnesses...

Bored of the endless ‘is Die Hard is a Christmas movie’ debate? Here are some other films for us to argue about instead
It is time to officially retire the “Is Die Hard a Christmas movie?” debate. We will never find consensus on this matter. It is too partisan a subject. The lines have become too entrenched, and the prospect of changing anybody’s mind on the matter is all but impossible. As much as it hurts to admit, we will never truly know whether Die Hard is a Christmas movie, even though it definitely is. But that’s Ok. The death of this debate means that we now get to start all over again with a bunch of new films. I would like to propose that the following films are also Christmas movies, and that they should be enjoyed around an open fire by the entire family every Christmas...

If there’s one weekend at the box office that studios and exhibitors typically have had no thanks for, it’s the post Thanksgiving period, typically the first weekend in December, when business drops by as much as 50%.
Last year the Black Friday weekend went from $180.9M led by Frozen 2 to $90.3M during the first frame of December, and let me tell ya somethin’, studios and exhibition are hungering for those types of tickets sales right now.
Universal remains the only major studio pumping out wide releases to those remaining movie theaters which aren’t being smashed down by lockdowns (like in California — God knows when we’ll be able to go to the movies again).
This weekend, Universal’s DreamWorks Animated title The Croods: A New Age in weekend 2 continued to see the best numbers in the current Covid-19 America, with $4.4M, -55%, crossing $20.3M in its 12th day in release.
