The summer of 1990 was supposed to be a showdown between Dick Tracy and Days Of Thunder. It was a bit of an odd rivalry...
It would be fair to say that the top five movies at the Us box office in 1990 didn’t follow the rule book. In fact, 1990 saw Hollywood’s blockbuster formula falter, to the point that conversations were rife about whether a sea change was coming. Dramtic changes in blockbuster mentality were certainly on the way, as it happened, but not for a decade or so. Yet the seed was planted in 1990 that sure-fire blockbuster hits weren’t always, well, sure-fire blockbuster hits.

Getting mean tweets is kind of amusing really. Thankfully I don’t think I’ve ever got one since I’ve not been brainwashed by the thing called Twitter yet, but to each their own. The strange thing about Twitter however is that much like Facebook it allows people to be tough over social media and say things that a lot of them likely wouldn’t say to a person’s face. In sense it’s like talking behind a person’s back, only loud enough so that they can hear you. In this clip however you get to watch Larry David, one of the last guys

An actual comedian hosting “Saturday Night Live”? That’s a concept as simple as… Well, as simple as an actual comedian hosting “Saturday Night Live.” While there’s definitely nothing wrong with actors, musicians, etc. hosting the show, there’s typically a better chance for a comedian’s creative voice to come through in a show that’s known for often having a static voice. So it’s no surprise “The Big Sick”/”Silicon Valley”/”Burning Love”/plenty of funny things star Kumail Nanjiani and his voice make the perfect choice for “Saturday Night Live” host.
Of course, you can’t expect any host — comedian or not — to singlehandedly change the structure of the show. Especially when the season is already off to a wobbly start.

President Donald Trump is having trouble accepting that the Graham-Cassidy bill was pulled for lack of votes, insisting the bill has the votes but is bogged down by procedural issues. Comedy gold for Jimmy Kimmel, who has campaigned aggressively on his late-night show against the latest Gop effort to kill Obamacare. It has been a really bad week for Potus, Kimmel said on Wednesday’s Jimmy Kimmel Live. “But Trump is not one to admit defeat – he was full of both ‘b’ and ‘s…...

As many of you already know, last night was the first game of the NBA finals. While the game was pretty entertaining for the first quarter and a half, it got a little “boring” since the Warriors decimated the Cavaliers on 38 points from Kevin Durant and 28 from Stephen Curry. Lebron James had his usual other worldly numbers with 29, 15 and 8 and Kevin Love posted 16 pts and 21 boards but this was a Warriors show that saw them effectively bludgeon the Cavs. I’m not sure that even the super powers of Lebron James can slow down

The title for Madam Secretary Season 3 Episode 17, "Convergence," couldn't have been more on the nose. We don't usually spend a lot of time talking about titles, but they're usually a little more enigmatic then this.
The long running arcs finally started to fit together, and thank god we don't have to have another tease about Henry worrying about Ian. Personally, I don't care if we never see him again now that the whole point of the religious cult storyline is clear.
Okay, it was clear before. I've been saying for a while that this is where it was headed, and while it's always nice to be about to say "I told you so," I was so tired of waiting for things to resolve.
Drawing out obvious plots is like enduring bad dental work. Why would the writers inflict that upon fans?

While Doctor Strange is hardly intended to be a comedy, there’s been some hilarious things coming out this week from the Marvel hit. Earlier this week we shared a brief reel of outtakes from the movie which shows the brighter side of Benedict Cumberbatch. While the clip is only about 30 seconds you get enough to know just how much fun actors must have had on set. But today’s clip from Doctor Strange is infinitely funnier. It’s a rendering of Doctor Strange with unnecessary censorship. Unnecessary Censorship refers to the practice of adding censor bleeps, mosaic blurs or black bars

If you find yourself in Westworld withdrawal, then boy, do we have the show for you!
Yes, it's about sentient, self aware robots -- here they are called "synths," not hosts. The difference is about how robots fit into the Real world, not just as pawns for the wealthy in a high tech amusement park.
Humans Season 2 Episode 1 starts with the rogue synth Niska, who killed a human last season, in possession of a code from the synth designer that gives her buds complete self awareness, making them essentially human.
Niska finds herself in Berlin, where the romance she has with a human named Astrid is the catalyst for her actions.
Astrid has no clue that Niska is a synth, so I feel really bad that she gave her heart to a machine. Love hurts.
For someone who supposedly wants all her synth brothers and sisters to be just like people,...

As the year comes to a close, there is one group we’ve yet to hear from about the Best of 2016: The Directors.
Filmmakers are busy folks, and some were instantly wary about making a list, with “I haven’t seen enough movies to make a top ten list” a common reply. So we decided to keep it loose. Including TV and other forms of entertainment was encouraged, how they chose to frame their list was totally flexible, and even if they only had a handful of projects they wanted to highlight, IndieWire made it clear we wanted to know what inspired them this year.
The most exciting thing, beyond how many great directors replied, is the time and energy they put into their lists. Be it Kirsten Johnson’s tribute to Abbas Kiarostami, Paul Feig’s surprise message to “Ghostbuster” trolls, Jennifer Kent teasing the start of her new film,...

‘Rebecca’ is a slow burn, an episode in which as much attention is paid to the lighting around Chuck as to the scramble faced by Kim and Jimmy in their respective legal purgatories or to Mike’s dawning realization that half measures leave loose ends. The eponymous Rebecca(a charming Ann Cusack) is Chuck’s wife, introduced in the opening flashback and quickly won over by Jimmy’s charms at a dinner which, for Chuck, is next to unendurable. The resentment seething beneath Chuck’s genial exterior appears bone-deep, souring his domestic joy when, after the meal’s end, he attempts to joke around like Jimmy does and sees his own efforts fall flat. What's not to love about Bill Murray as an ill-fated weatherman who is forced to relive the same day over and over in Groundhog Day? Comedy gold. If you've ever wondered the real reasons why Murray's sourpuss meteorologist was chosen to repeat the same sadistic time loop, voiceover artist Eddie Deezen has your answer. He ponders why Murray's Phil deserved such a hefty punishment and points to the second draft of the script for an explanation. Apparently it has to do with a curse that Phil's ex-girlfriend put on him. "Literally, she opens a book of magic spells and does a little ritual that causes him to get stuck in time…. There is no 'higher purpose' given, just an angry, embittered ex-girlfriend with a little book,"...

There are plenty of reasons why summer is many people's favorite season – the quality of TV usually isn't one of them.
The months between May finales' live-Tweeting and fall premieres' awards-contender chatter has long been a proverbial dumping ground for shows the networks use to fill dead air between reruns and informercials. But that doesn't mean there aren't a few exceptions to this age-old pattern.

If there are two things Hollywood adores right now (besides superhero movies), it's origin stories and live-action fairy tales. Minions, even, was there to remind families how they're characters came to be. Efforts have already been made to bring the two together, particularly from Disney as they bask in the money with box office smash Maleficent and a Prince Charming movie on the horizon, and the studio is going just another step forward as it brings the beginnings of Aladdin's best friend, the Genie, to the big screen. Written by Damian Shannon and Mark Shift, horror writers behind flicks like Freddy vs. Jason and the 2009 Friday the 13th remake who've transitioned into comedy with their pens guiding the new Baywatch movie and the Peter Dinklage-starring, Bad Santa-esque R-rated leprechaun romp O'Lucky Day, the studio is developing Genies as a live-action comedy adventure. It won't bring Aladdin in the mix (at least,...

ABC’s Galavant wrapped its eight-episode freshman run on Sunday night by installing a new face on the throne, leaving another princess to be saved and sending two frenemies on a slow boat to… where, Mist Haven? Who knows.
Here, TVLine’s two biggest Galavant fans (Galafans?), Editor-at-Large Matt Webb Mitovich and West Coast Reporter Rebecca Iannucci, reflect on the ambitious musical-comedy’s maiden voyage and express reservations about what any possible Season 2 would look like.
We come here to primarily celebrate ABC’s Galavant as a whole, though I admittedly came away from the finale feeling a bit “meh.

Galavant, Season 1, Episode 3, “Two Balls” Written by Dan Fogelman Directed by Chris Koch
Galavant, Season 1, Episode 4, “Comedy Gold” Written by Kat Likkel & John Hoberg Directed by John Fortenberry Airs Sundays at 8pm Est on ABC
The third and fourth episodes of Galavant wisely focus on strengthening the bonds between the main trio on their journey to do… something. On a quest. There’s singing?
Probably the biggest fault with Galavant right now is its marriage between humor and plot. This isn’t a show where one tunes in to watch what happens next and the show’s go-with-it tone makes for quite a forgetful voyage. Why are our “heroes”—Galavant, Isabella and Sid—traveling to King Richard’s kingdom? The episodes remind viewers that Isabella is definitely double crossing Galavant, our egotistical hero, and that there is a very important Macguffin crystal, but besides that, is anyone really watching for the plot?...

Who doesn't love to laugh? Whether your taste runs to R-rated raunch, classic yuks or witty British humor, you'll find something hilarious to stream on Netflix.

Here's the best of what happened last night on late night. Jimmy Fallon and will.i.am teamed up for Jimmy's recurring "Tonight Show" segment, "Ew" -- but instead of sitting on a couch and musing about things being "ew," they made an epic music video. And yes, will.i.am dressed up as a girl named mir.i.am for the event and busted out lyrics like "she's so basically basic." Definitely worth watching, as long as you're ready for this song to be stuck in your head all day. CBS had a solid premise with 'The McCarthys.' A close-knit family of varying interests, personalities, and sexual orientations who love and supporg each other through wacky sitcom hijinks. But something terrible happened between conception and execution. Somehow what should be a progressive comedy reads like The Disney Channel trying to write sitcoms aimed at adults. #1 - We're opening with deadpan narration over stock photos. Is this a clever parody of terrible 80s sitcoms? #2 - It has to be. No one unironically laughs at loving 'Dunkin Donuts' as a punchline. #3 - These people are the Mafia. This is a mob sitcom. How else do you end up in houses that close to each other unless the former owners' have accidents or are bribed? #4 - Oh man how embarrassing. They dubbed the first table read over the this 'clever' exchange about basketball teams. How is 'Miami Sound Machine' even a punchline?...

What do you get you when you team up a fictional Vice President with the real-life VP? Comedy gold. That's just what folks attending Saturday's White House Correspondents' Dinner were treated to in a seven-minute short that was shown prior to President Barack Obama taking the stage. In the video, Julia Louis-Dreyfus stars as her Veep character Selina Meyer, and she winds up getting into a bit of mischief with the help of none other than Vice President Joe Biden and his yellow (yes, yellow) Corvette. Tom Bergeron is stepping down as host of America’s Funniest Home Videos, leaving the coveted spot open (hey, it’s about as steady as a showbiz job gets). When thinking of who should replace him, our minds immediately went to Bob Saget, who hosted the show from 1989 to 1997, but then we thought: What if every Full House star — not just Danny Tanner — was eligible for the position? After all, this has already been the year of Full House reunions with Saget, John Stamos, and Dave Coulier’s multiple TV appearances together and the upcoming Candace Cameron Bure/Scott Weinger guest spots on The Neighbors.

TV writer Brian Lowry in hot water, Reginald Hunter says being called misogynist is 'rude' and Omid Djalili tries to crack America – again
This week's comedy news
An august organ makes a fool of itself this week, as the influential Hollywood trade mag Variety slams Us standup Sarah Silverman for trying to be "as dirty as the guys". Silverman fans and comedy commentators immediately rounded on the paper's TV columnist Brian Lowry, accusing him of sexism and a failure to understand Silverman's comedy. In a review of her new HBO special We Are Miracles, Lowry wrote that Silverman (who has 4.8m Twitter followers) has only "frittered around the edges of breakout success … Despite all manner of career-friendly gifts – from her looks to solid acting chops – she's limited herself by appearing determined to prove she can be as dirty and distasteful as the boys."
For these comments, the critic was instantly criticised.

Last week, in running through the best and worst of 30 Rock, I bemoaned the Thursday TV wasteland that now confronts us in this dystopian present we call Fall 2013. Fortunately, there is still a glimmer of hope for Thursday humankind in the form of the hilarious and beautiful Parks and Recreation. Leslie Knope is still out there fighting the good fight, and we know she will be nothing if not diligent in fulfilling her television-saving duties right to the end.
Parks features one of the great lovable comedy ensembles (seriously, there isn’t a single dud in that group, and that includes the duds like Jerry), but it truly is Amy Poehler’s parks employee turned city councilwoman Leslie that makes the show so special. Her refreshing hilarity comes not from incompetence, as we so often see in workplace sitcoms, but from her positive qualities, her extreme dedication and compassion. As she says in “The Debate,...

The Britain's Got Talent judge says she was attacked by an unnamed comic, 21st-century comics grapple with homosexuality, and David Brent realises his rock-god dreams
Not much to laugh about in today's top story, as Amanda Holden writes in her autobiography that she was once assaulted by "a famous comedian". The Britain's Got Talent judge claims she was cornered by the unnamed comic at a public event, during a period when she was patching up her marriage to Les Dennis after an affair with Men Behaving Badly star Neil Morrissey. "[Dennis and I] went to an event together," Holden writes, "and on my way back from the loo, I was cornered by a famous comedian, who tried to kiss me and put his hands in places they shouldn't have been. I was scared and tried to push him away … but he wasn't put off … My body went limp, and I just stood there...

Comedian and actor Tim Allen is in a spot of bother this week. Specifically for telling the Tampa Bay Times that he should be able to say the n-word as much as he likes. "If I have no intent, if I show no intent, if I clearly am not a racist, then how can 'nigger' be bad coming out of my mouth?" asked Allen. The comic, who claimed to use the word regularly in his standup, added that "[the phrase] 'the n-word' is worse to me than nigger." African-American commentators politely but firmly disagreed. "Here's a general rule of thumb to follow when using the n-word for white people," said sociologist, author and radio host Michael Eric Dyson on MSNBC: "Never.

Comic hints that a high-profile hunger strike might be on the cards. And if that wasn't confusing enough, Sunday is now a day of atheism and Jo Brand a product of patriarchy
This week's comedy news
Is Frankie Boyle about to go on hunger strike? As reported by the Guardian last week, the human rights lawyer Clive Stafford Smith is currently hunger-striking in solidarity with his client Shaker Aamer, who is imprisoned at Guantánamo Bay and has been striking for 150 days. In an interview last Thursday on Radio Scotland, and again the following day on this website, Stafford Smith claimed the standup and ex-Mock the Week star is lined up to "take over from me when I fail" – ie starve himself to raise awareness of the plight of inmates at Guantánamo. The move would represent a strong break with Boyle's cynical public image, but all his management will say...

The Girls creator hits back at a porn parody of her comedy show, Doug Stanhope wades into the Oklahoma God debate, and Dutch TV is slammed for satirising the Woolwich murder
This week's comedy news
In a week when Jerry Lewis told the world that female comedy "bothers [him]", two tales of fightback – of a sort. Girls creator Lena Dunham has criticised news of a pornographic parody movie of her hit HBO comedy. "Most TV shows have been turned into gross and weird porn parodies," the Splitsider website tells us, but Dunham isn't prepared to shrug this one off. "Girls is, at its core, a feminist action while [the XXX film's producer] Hustler is a company that markets and monetises a male's idea of female sexuality," wrote Dunham. And also, "a big reason I engage in (simulated) on-screen sex [in Girls] is to counteract a skewed idea of that act created by the proliferation of porn."

Sam Bain lifts the lid on 'painful' decision to turn down HBO series, Three Men in a Boat stars enter choppy waters – and Britain's smelliest-looking celebrity
This week's comedy news
Laughing Stock this week brings you news, not of something that's happened in the world of comedy, but something that didn't. According to an interview with Peep Show creator Sam Bain on the Stateside podcast A Bit of a Chat, Bain and his writing partner Jesse Armstrong "were about a week away from flying to La to co-create Flight of the Conchords, and then Peep Show got recommissioned and we couldn't go".
Bain and Armstrong had agreed to make the HBO series with Conchords stars Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement – "[although] we didn't know it was gonna be as good as it was," Bain told interviewer Ken Plume. (It turned out – with the Conchords' eventual co-writer James Bobin – to be very good indeed.

Deaths threats to comedian prompt calls for nationalists to raise the tone. Plus, Fringe gets new venue and Trump takes revenge
This week's comedy news
And this week – a comedian influences the future survival of the British state. Standup Susan Calman has been drawn into a row surrounding the conduct of the campaign for Scottish independence, after she was attacked online after joking on Radio 4's News Quiz about the nationalist cause.
"After the show was broadcast," Calman wrote on her blog, "I was accused of betraying my country, of being racist towards my own people and of being a cunt." Fellow comics including Rory Bremner leaped to Calman's defence, as the Scotsman newspaper picked up on and ran with Calman's reference to "name-calling, swearing and death threats". To cap it all, the shadow foreign secretary and Unionist tub-thumper Douglas Alexander hijacked the row to berate the independence camp for lowering the debate's tone.

In the week we lost Richard Briers, one of the all-time TV comedy greats, confirmation of a new – and intriguing – addition to the UK's sitcom pantheon. Jessica Hynes, star of Spaced and Twenty Twelve, has written and will star in a new BBC4 comedy series about the suffragette movement. "It's a kind of a character study," Hynes recently told an interviewer, "and hopefully, on a good day, it will be a kind of female Dad's Army." The sitcom is set in 1910, and traces the unlikely politicisation of the Banbury Intricate Craft Circle. "Margaret has been to London and discovered Women's Suffrage," runs the BBC's blurb, "so she decides [the Craft Circle] need to set up their own movement." Rebecca Front and Getting On's Vicki Pepperdine will also star.

Take two huge comedy stars. Trap them in a car for a "road trip" and what do you get? Moments of pure genius, of course. Ladies and gentlemen, I'm describing one of the best parts of the new comedy "Identity Thief," in theaters now.Jason Bateman stars as do-gooder Sandy Bigelow Patterson, an accounts rep living in Denver whose identity is stolen by Diana (Melissa McCarthy), a crook living in Orlando. Sandy convinces Diana to return with him to Colorado in order to clear his name, and thus one of the most terrifically awful road trips you've ever seen is born."I think they were my favorite," the "Mike & Molly" star told us about her car scenes with Jason. "You're confined in this car, a lot of times you're locked in on both sides because they have camera rigs so you literally can't get out even if you wanted to.

We begin our look back on the Pop Culture that was in 2012 as Media Mogul Ric Meyers (ricmeyers.com) runs down the vast array of great TV comedy from the year. From Children’S Hospital to Happy Endings to Suburgatory, it’s been a damn good twelve months. Plus what show was downloaded illegally the most in 2012 (we are talking millions here) and how iPads are killing the toy business.

Apologies for missing last week’s set of TV, but I’m back now with a new Raw Review!
Rey Mysterio & Sin Cara Vs. Rhodes Scholars
Raw kicks off with the finals of the Tag Team Championship Tournament, a match we should have seen last week. Good match between these four as expected, although it did include a spot involving Sin Cara jumping between ropes and delivering a moonsault which he looked slightly uncomfortable with. As predicted Rhodes & Sandow pick up the win following a Cross Rhodes on Mysterio. I would guess that these two will feud over the Tag Titles after Bryan & Kane drop them but I don’t want Bryan & Kane to drop them! Cara & Mysterio Vs. Rhodes Scholars Vs. Bryan & Kane for Survivor Series please. The Tag Champs appear on the tron and light comedy ensues.

This week, we finally get the perpetrator's version of one of the most notorious blowouts in recent comedy history, as Seinfeld star Michael Richards opens up to Jerry himself about his racist tirade in a comedy club six years ago. Richards was Seinfeld's guest last week on the latter's new web series Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, and towards the end of the video the erstwhile Kramer addresses the onstage rant – which took place at the Laugh Factory in West Hollywood in 2006 – that seems to have ended his live comedy career. As if there was any doubt Joseph Gordon-Levitt was a talented multi-hyphenate before, his performance last night certainly put any lingering doubt to rest. While the writing in the sketches wasn’t always hilarious, Gordon-Levitt – much like Seth MacFarlane last week – came prepared to have fun. It was obvious he was up for anything and giving the show his all, keeping the energy high whether he was in a Magic Mike-inspired stripper routine of a monologue, or a raunchy Beatles sing-along.
The episode didn’t get off to the best start. In lieu of a political cold opener, it did a parody of Live!

The 'spirit of the fringe' is pitted against capitalism as awards director dismisses standup's complaints about commercialisation of Edinburgh comedy
Best of this week's news
Halfway through week one of the fringe, and the big story is – well, pretty much the same as last week's big story. Stewart Lee's broadside against the commercialisation of Edinburgh comedy (see below) set the agenda for the opening days of festival 2012, with Edinburgh comedy award director Nica Burns responding to it in her annual pep talk at the weekend. Burns dismissed Lee's grumble as part of "a bit of competition to create controversy", and set against his claims the argument that free shows are now as important to the fringe as ticketed events. Free events now number more than 800 in the fringe programme, compared with 177 free shows in 2006.

Gervais collaborator gets his own TV pilot, Pegg's Comic-Con costume fetish causes offence, and Russell Brand wants to be a vicar ... so it seems
Best of the week's news
Stephen Merchant is working on his own TV project – his first outside of his partnership with Ricky Gervais. The lanky star is to write and appear in a pilot entitled Hello Ladies, based on his 2011 standup tour of the same name. The pilot – like the standup show – will focus on Merchant's supposed cackhandedness with the opposite sex, and will shoot later this year, according to Deadline. Merchant (who will also executive produce) has written the episode with Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, both former writers on the Us version of The Office. Eisenberg and Stupnitsky also worked on the comedy films Year One and Bad Teacher.
Lovers of comedy, look away now: Russell Crowe is to direct a biopic of Bill Hicks.

The Ghostface Killer from the "Scream" movies and NextMovie are kindred spirits.
Ok, so we don't kill people (promise!) but we do occassionally go around asking people their favorite scary movies. And, since a few of you asked that very same question on Twitter, we decided to include ourselves in the process.
So, without further ado, here are the NextMovie staff picks for favorite horror flicks.
Scott Robson, Vice President: 'Nosferatu' (1929)
It's the original when it comes to creepy, chilling and just plain cool.
Also "Ringu" (1998), the original version of "The Ring" – not only is it really scary, but it buys you cred amongst film snobs – and "The Wizard of Oz" (1939), because small children should never be subjected to the vision of flying monkeys.
Kevin Polowy, Executive Editor: '28 Days Later' (2002)
I don't think Danny Boyle gets all the credit he deserves for reinventing and rejuvenating the zombie genre. Before "28 Days Later,...

You say the prospect of Paul W.S. Anderson’s gearpunk Three Musketeers is putting you off your feed? Try this! It’s in Technicolor, including some shades not found in nature. And it’s got musketeers who are all for one and one for all... one woman! See, it’s funny cuz they’re all after her like dogs in heat, or something. And then, when she says No, it turns out she totally means Kiss me you big 18th-century lug you. (But she’s grabbing a sword, so she’s probably gonna kill him, right?) Unlike Anderson’s sure-to-be opus, this one doesn’t have 3D. But there are some painted backgrounds that are fairly hilarious. Also, there’s one bit with swordfighting on what looks like a Los Angeles golf course. Comedy gold.

In June, Diablo Cody's directorial debut was announced [1]: Lamb of God, a film the writer and soon-to-be director described as "about a woman who survives a plane crash and loses her faith in everything. (Comedy gold!) Seriously though, it’s not the cynicism-fest implied by the log line. It’s a nice Christmas story." Not long afterward, Russell Brand was said to have been offered [2] one of the lead roles. Now he's locked, and Julianne Hough (Footloose), also mentioned as being high on Cody's wishlist, is also set to play the plane crash survivor around whom the story is built. Deadline [3] says that Cody and Mandate Pictures have set the two, though the site also reports that the film is now untitled. The shoot will start in spring 2012. This is the original plot announcement: The comedy follows a young conservative religious woman who loses her faith after a plane crash,...
