The Walt Disney Company is celebrating its 100th anniversary with a hefty new Blu-ray box set containing 100 of its best animated films.
Officially titled the Disney Legacy Animated Film Collection, the box set comes with three volumes that open up to feature the original theatrical artwork for each film. Additionally, the package offers digital codes to all 100 movies, a certificate of authenticity, a lithograph from the upcoming feature Wish, and a collectible set of crystal Mickey Mouse ears engraved with “Disney 100.”
Drawing films from Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar, and the now-closed DisneyToon Studios, the collection offers a pretty comprehensive timeline of the company, founded in 1923. Since the Writers Guild of American and Screen Actors Guild are both still on strike, this year's Destination D23 convention down in Orlando, Florida didn't really have much of anything to showcase. Sure, the studio showed some footage from Disney's upcoming animated movie "Wish," and they announced that "Haunted Mansion" would be hitting Disney+ in October. But there was one other announcement that might be intriguing for anyone who is both a Disney fan and a physical media collector.
This fall, the House of Mouse will be releasing the Disney Legacy Animated Film Collection, which collects 100 animated films from both Disney and Pixar, reaching as far back as "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" and up through this summer's "Elemental" from Pixar. All of the movies come in a big three-volume set that unfolds in collectible storybooks. The Disney100 Blu-ray box set also includes the original theatrical poster art for every movie within the storybook,...

Disney just announced the release of the Disney Legacy Animated Film Collection, featuring 100 animated films from Disney, Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar. It’s packaged together as a three-volume set that unfolds into your own storybook.
The set is festooned with original poster designs and comes with digital codes for every movie, alongside a lithograph from Disney’s upcoming feature “Wish,” a certificate of authenticity and crystal Mickey Mouse ears engraved with the “Disney 100” logo. The limited-edition collection will be available on Nov. 14, with pre-orders beginning on Walmart.com on Sept. 18. It has a retail price of $1,500.
What’s fascinating about the set is that it includes a wide array of classic Walt Disney Animation Studios features, along with beloved Pixar favorites and a smattering of films (many of them direct-to-video sequels to earlier masterworks) created by the since-shuttered DisneyToon Studios. That includes “Tinker Bell,” “Return to Neverland,” “The...

Review of Winnie the Pooh. Beautiful hand-drawn animation and sweet storytelling bring back Pooh in wonderful fashion. New Pooh pays homage to A.A. Milne. The Motion Picture Association of America's Classification and Ratings Administration released new ratings for Bridesmaids, Justin Bieber: Never Say Never, Winnie the Pooh and more in their weekly bulletin this afternoon.Bridesmaids was rated R for "some strong sexuality, and language throughout." This follows in the footsteps of other Judd Apatow-produced adult-leaning comedies like Superbad, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Pineapple Express and Get Him to the Greek. The Kristen Wiig vehicle opens May 13 against comic book adaptation Priest. Justin Bieber: Never Say Never and Winnie the Pooh each received a G rating. While this innocuous designation is somewhat rare, it's not altogether surprising: previous Pooh outings The Tigger Movie and Piglet's Big Movie were also rated G, as were recent teen idol concert documentaries Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience and Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour. Never Say Never opens Feb. 11 against Just Go With It,...

I have fond memories of the Winnie the Pooh movies; although I haven't seen recent entries such as The Tigger Movie (2000), Piglet's Big Movie (2003), or Pooh's Heffalump Movie (2005), I'd look forward to seeing this movie, mostly because the trailer's sweet music and somber dialog suggests a soothing poignancy that would not only be instructional for children, but comforting to adults.
Although I'm glad that Disney kept the Pooh franchise in traditional animation, I have to say that I'm disappointed with the film's look. I miss the grainier, fuller, warmer era of ...Read more at MovieRetriever.com...

Late this afternoon, Warner Bros. Pictures unveiled a set of noteworthy additions to their 2011 release schedule, while Walt Disney Pictures also chimed in, assigning dates to two new animated movies. Unknown White Male has been scheduled for Jan. 7, 2011. Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (Orphan), the movie stars Liam Neeson as a doctor who wakes up after a car accident to find that his wife (January Jones) no longer recognizes him and another man (Aidan Quinn) has assumed his identity. Also featuring Diane Kruger, Unknown White Male currently shares the Jan. 7 date with the Untitled Ashton Kutcher/Natalie Portman Project. Directed by Mikael Hafstrom (1408) and starring Anthony Hopkins, Warner Bros. supernatural drama The Rite debuts Jan. 28, 2011. Allegedly inspired by true events, the movie finds a disillusioned American seminary student attending exorcism school at the Vatican, battling demonic forces in the process. Warner Bros. previously had The Factory, a thriller featuring John Cusack,...

Let's kick this off by acknowledging that this isn't really a list of the decade's best kid movies because -- let's face it -- kids like nearly everything they see in a movie theater, as evidenced by the upcoming "squeakuel" to 2007's Alvin and the Chipmunks. While we'd all like to think that our progeny shall be born with very our own impeccable taste, that's just not how it works, but I do suppose that bodily function jokes are an inevitable rite of passage that most adults learn to either tolerate or ignore and, in unfortunate cases, never outgrow. At this point, I could put together a sanitized list of films that avoid such jokes and call it sufficient, but that's not of much use here. After all, when it comes to a list like this that concerns films that have been in circulation for a matter of years, most...

The Walt Disney Co. dominates the list of this year's Oscar-eligible animated features, fielding four of the 11 eligible entries with its releases, which include the Pixar-produced Finding Nemo, Brother Bear, The Jungle Book 2 and Piglet's Big Movie. But while Disney scored on the distribution front, anime director Satoshi Kon enjoyed the distinction of being the only director with two eligible films. He is represented by the DreamWorks-distributed Millennium Actress and the upcoming Samuel Goldwyn Films/IDP release Tokyo Godfathers. Rounding out the list of eligible films, which were announced Wednesday by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, are Warner Bros. Pictures' live-action/animated combo Looney Tunes: Back in Action, Paramount Pictures/Nickelodeon's Rugrats Go Wild, Miramax Films' Pokemon Heroes, Sony Pictures Classics' The Triplets of Belleville and the German-produced Jester Till.

The Walt Disney Co. is bidding sayonara to Walt Disney Animation (Japan), its Tokyo-based animation studio that has turned out such projects as the theatrical releases Piglet's Big Movie and The Tigger Movie as well as direct-to-video titles like this year's 101 Dalmatians II: Patch's London Adventure. In an internal memo distributed Friday, Disney revealed its plans to shut down the animation facility, which employs 103 local animators and artists. The closure will take effect once the studio completes work on its current project, a Winnie the Pooh spinoff called The Heffalump Movie. It has not yet been determined whether that project will be a theatrical or video/DVD release. In a statement, Disney acknowledged the studio's closure but added: "Our experience working in Japan for the past 14 years has been outstanding, primarily because of the world-class artists and executives who have produced exceptional animation. However, after reviewing our business plans and production requirements, we determined we no longer can support this additional production capacity."...
