Indiana Jones to the rescue!
Harrison Ford was a real-life hero on Sunday when, while driving down California State Road 126, he witnessed a woman lose control of her vehicle and swerve into an embankment, fire officials in Santa Paula, California, told ABC News.
The 75-year-old actor, along with several other good samaritans, helped the woman get to safety before the paramedics arrived at the scene.

Carrie Fisher finds it "surprising" that the story of her former fling with Star Wars co-star Harrison Ford has garnered so much attention.
In her new memoir, The Princess Diarist, Fisher writes that she began an "intense" affair with Ford in 1976, when he was 33 and she was 19, that went on for several months while they were filming the beloved sci-fi movie.
On Monday's Today show, Fisher told co-anchor Savannah Guthrie that she gave Ford a heads up that she would be sharing details of their alleged romance in her book. "He's incredibly private," she said. "I feel really bad doing that to him."

November 11 is Veterans Day, but it hasn’t always been. Our current conception of the day was the work of a few dedicated individuals, many of whom are not known by the general public. So let’s dive into how the holiday came about.

“Suicide Squad” is a movie so spectacularly awful that it’s tempting to see it as a malignant singularity. But in the context of a summer that’s produced a nearly unbroken string of lackluster-at-best blockbusters, it looks more like a perfect storm, the product of everything that’s wrong with studio filmmaking happening at the same time. Like the movie’s “Team X,” which gathers together the world’s most notorious criminals, “Suicide Squad” is the worst of the worst — but it’s not alone, and that makes it indicative of a larger problem.
As Kim Masters points out in her account of the movie’s troubled production in The Hollywood Reporter, the tempestuous backstory “barely stands out in today’s landscape.” Perhaps more alarming than Warner Bros.’ last-ditch attempts to salvage “Suicide Squad” are all the similarly uninspired summer tentpoles that apparently failed to set off alarm bells.

Previously at the Halfway Mark:
• 5 Favorite Pictures and imaginary Oscar scenario
• 11 Costume Design Honors from couture to the puritanical with swimwear on the side
• Cinematography & Production Design Sunset Song, etc...
• Heroes & Villains from Deadpool to Shere Khan
• 23 Male Actor Honorees in 5 categories
Cue fireworks. It's the grand finale. Our brief Halfway Mark Review honoring the best of the 50+ movies we've seen that have been released between January 1st and June 30th, is now at its end. But don't worry. The listing impulse fully never goes away and there's more excitement soon as we'll start updating the Oscar charts tomorrow. Naturally we're ending with Best Actress if five categories -- the same categories we previously did for the men.
If I had a ballot (hey, I do... albeit not an AMPAS ballot) here's what I'd honor from the year thus far -- January through June releases only though I've seen some July & August titles.

To keep ourselves entertained, we like to spin the box office charts so it's not just "copy/paste" from week to week. So let's look at the box office top ten through the lens of current movies with female leads. Melissa McCarthy (in a photo finish for #1 with superheroes) and Helen Mirren keep proving their box office consistency over and over again, don't they? We're also happy to see Sally Field doing so well in what could have been a blink and you'll miss it VOD movie. Field's already outperformed last year's senior female sleeper indie hits Grandma and I'll See You In My Dreams.
But the 10 female names below make up such an odd odd sorority you must admit...
Top Ten Female Lead Movies This Weekend
01 The Boss (Melissa McCarthy) $23.4 New Melissa McCarthy
03 Zootopia (Ginnifer Goodwin) $14.3 (cum. $296)
04 My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 (Nia Vardalos) $6.4 (cum. $46.7)
06 Miracles From Heaven (Jennifer Garner) $4.8 (cum.

It feels like almost every new movie is coming out on April 5th—and yes, that is probably a bit of an exaggeration, but still, we do have over 20 horror and sci-fi titles arriving on Blu-ray and DVD this Tuesday and there’s no denying that’s a bunch.
Of course the big title this week is Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but there are also several great indie horror films being released this week, including Ava’s Possessions, The Hallow, Cherry Tree, #Horror, and Creep, which is finally makes its way to DVD as well. Arrow Video has several special edition releases coming out on Tuesday, including The Black Cat, Your Vice is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key and the Death Walks Twice box set.
Other notable releases for April 5th include Anguish, Deadly Weekend, The Entity, The Tell-Tale Heart and Journey to the Seventh Planet.

Heroes aren’t made; they’re born. Or, wait, is it the other way around? Whatever the maxim is, it’s wrong. Or right. They’re most definitely made, but they rarely emerge from the creative mind (or hive mind) fully-formed. Putting together a character who will become iconic, who will live on after whatever screen or page they originally appeared on and exist forever in the hearts and minds of audiences across the globe, takes a lot of work. A melting pot of influences, concepts, themes and characteristics will be mixed thoroughly beforehand, with ingredients added and taken away consistently through the process.
And the only way to see if a character work is to try them out in a story. Usually this means that a writer will put them in a screenplay and, if they’re not working out, remove them and give them a re-jig until they do.

There has always been an understated rivalry between the mediums of movies and television. Many years ago it was even thought as being somewhat of a drastic career letdown if actors/actresses from film decided to depart for the landscape of television. The truth is that for some performers that had stalled or uneventful momentum in motion pictures that the concept of “slumming it” in television actually saved their show business profession. Hence, the boob tube made them relevant whereas the big screen had unceremoniously passed them by.
However, there is also a mutual respect that cinema and television share that go hand in hand when shaping our appreciation for entertainment on both the big and small screen. When movies depict the aspects of the TV world giving a sociological, psychological or emotional perspective then it is not so uncool to be a proud couch potato after all, right? Let...

The big winners at last night's 16-hour Oscar ceremony: Dreams. Inspiration. Heroes. So live the impossible, because that’s what Jared Leto's mom would want. Just keep livin', because no matter where you’re from, your dreams are valid and your magic is real. Hey, movie stars, we get it — nobody’s against dreams, right? Despite a terrifically loose Ellen DeGeneres, the first half of the Oscars was the type of slog that makes you wonder if your friends who don’t watch TV are onto something.
Last night got off to a dreadfully slow start – Ellen’s great monologue aside, which included that surprising and just-this-side-of-cruel dig on Liza Minnelli. From the beginning the show was almost fatally crippled by the thick-with-self-regard theme of “Heroes in Hollywood.” That meant puffy, poorly edited montages of animated heroes, action heroes, and those ordinary among us who commit quiet acts of heroism (you know, average Joes like...

Won’t someone save cable news? It’s not just that ratings are down across the board for the Big Three 24-hour networks — although 2013 was unquestionably a bad year for everyone. Far more damaging, I think, is the fact that cable news as an aesthetic — as a compelling method for exploring the important topics of our modern era — has entered what feels like a late-decadent period. The typical news anchor on CNN or MSNBC or Fox News floats across a set built out of touchscreen walls and occasional chat-friendly desks: It’s like all of cable news takes place in...

Dennis Burkley, a character actor whose heavyset build and equally heavy Southern accent made him a memorable standout in a variety of roles in movies and on TV, has died of a heart attack at 67. Burkley made his movie debut in the 1973 grindhouse horror thriller Bummer, then landed smaller roles in Bob Rafelson’s Stay Hungry (1976), Heroes (1977), and Laserblast (1978), as well as a slew of guest spots on TV series, often playing redneck toughs. For a few months in 1980 and 1981, he had a steady job playing sidekick to Redd Foxx on Sanford, a ...

Today is the 25th anniversary of "Die Hard," a movie that forever changed the landscape of American action filmmaking. Director John McTiernan brought in European sensibilities and fluid camera movements that were unheard of at the time, adding an artistic edge and much-needed stylistic flourishes to a genre largely defined by hulking he-men and an almost complete lack of aesthetic embroidery (seriously — look at other action movies from 1988 and try not to fall asleep). It was as much a game changer as "Avatar," but never heralded as such; instead it was quietly acknowledged as an admirable achievement while its artistic merits went largely unheralded.
In honor of the film's anniversary, we thought we'd run down ten things that you probably don't know about "Die Hard," a movie whose legendary status was recently cemented when an entire wall of the Fox lot was painted up to resemble the sequence where Bruce Willis...

Summit have just four months left on the clock before Ender’s Game hits theatres, bringing with it the potential to launch a huge new franchise for the studio at the end of this year.
Last month, we saw a very impressive first teaser trailer, which gave us a look at some of the immense graphics we can look forward to from the blockbuster, along with introducing us to some of the key characters. Summit will no doubt be bringing us a massive campaign for Ender’s Game in the months to come, and they’ve now released three new propaganda posters to set the mood.
In the near future, a hostile alien race (called the Formics) have attacked Earth. If not for the legendary heroics of International Fleet Commander, Mazer Rackham (Ben Kingsley), all would have been lost. In preparation for the next attack, the highly esteemed Colonel Graff...

"Man of Steel" may only be a few days away, but for us it feels like an eternity. Last week, we sat down with director Zack Snyder and discussed a few "Justice League" Easter eggs that may or may not be popping up in "Man of Steel."
With the immense success of "Marvel's the Avengers" over at Marvel Studios, DC and Warner Bros. have been pretty hard-pressed as of late to assemble their answer to Earth's Mightiest Heroes: a "Justice League" movie. It's been said that "Man of Steel" could be the first step in a new wave of DC films all taking place in the same universe, with the exception of Christopher Nolan's "Dark Knight" trilogy. That being said, here's a list of some potential "Justice League" Easter eggs to keep an eye out for.

In the latest issue of Empire Magazine out Thursday, there's extensive coverage on the upcoming Superman film, Man of Steel. In conversations with director Zack Snyder a few details were revealed about the confrontation between Superman and the forces of General Zod that takes place in Smallville, Kansas. "It's a Western face-off. [Zod and Faora and the rest of the Kryptonian invasion] care very little for Smallville's iconographic status. We're being really hard on the town: this battle needed to be dangerous." Highlights Shooting the battle took nine days. The mayor of Plano, Illinois (which served as Smallville) makes a cameo. The town gets absolutely devastated. The battle is the first major conflict in the film. Keep your eyes peeled for what's described as an 'oh-my-god' cameo from someone playing a bank teller. Before I get started – or let’s pretend that I have just stopped time – just want to say regarding Martha Thomases’ column of last week:
Shit, Martha, why the fuck didn’t I think of writing that?
• • • • •
See, about two months ago I hurt my middle finger at work. It got caught between a stretcher and a door. The noted and very adorable Dr. Christopher Doumas used the C-arm to check it out. Nothing was broken – be thankful for small miracles, right? – but there was plenty of soft tissue damage, meaning I bruised the fascia, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Plus broken capillaries and such. Which caused my ahem middle finger to swell up and turn several shades of purple.
But you know how they say that soft tissue damage hurts worse than a broken bone? – well, maybe you don’t, but trust me, they do say that – so believe me when I tell you:
Goddamn,...

Should we just say it now? Summer box office records will likely be smashed again in 2015 when Marvel’s The Avengers assembles Earth’s Mightiest Heroes again for an untitled sequel. Walt Disney announced the released date of May 1, 2015 today, in what was the expected target date after Marvel Studios released their film pipeline through 2014 at Comic-Con. As we told you last week, Joss Whedon is all locked up to direct and write. Here’s the revised lineup.
Iron Man 3 (5/3/13)
Thor 2: The Dark World (11/8/13)
Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier (4/4/14)
Guardians of the Galaxy (8/1/14)
Ant-Man (Tbd)
Avengers Untitled Sequel (5/1/15)
Um, yeah. Still no date on that Edgar Wright Ant-Man film. Wright directed some of our favorite films such as Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Spaced, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, oh and executive produced Attack the Block. What does he have in line before that size-changing Avenger movie?...

If you thought the Expendables franchise couldn’t explode any more with testosterone, action heroes, and, um, explosions...well, you’re wrong.
Nicolas Cage has now been cast in The Expendables 3. And wait, there’s more! Talking to Total Film, producer Avi Lerner says:
“We’ve approached Clint Eastwood to be one of the guys, we’ve got a character in mind for him. We’re talking to Harrison Ford. [And we want] Wesley Snipes when he comes back from prison. I’ll give you one more name, we’ve got Nicolas Cage to play [one of the characters].”
“And we’re going to bring Mickey Rourke back, if he won’t be too crazy. I like Mickey. And of course, all the existing stars (will return)”
Yes, that’s right: Stanley Goodspeed, The Man With No Name, Indiana Jones, and Blade could be *in the same movie*! In addition to the already impressive cast of…as all those other guys.

You'd think being president of the United States would be a dramatic enough occupation, but no. Being leader of the free world is isn't exactly a low-stakes assignment, but in the dream-life of our movies, we also need our presidents to be two-fisted action heroes. Exhibit A: This weekend's "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter," which imagines the Railsplitter splitting open the heads of undead bloodsuckers with an ax. Its star, Benjamin Walker, has already made a career out of playing bare-knuckled presidents, starting with his lead role in the Broadway rock musical "Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson." In his comedy act, he's joked that he's been offered such projects as an erotic thriller inspired by the adulterous Warren G. Harding and "James Buchanan: Mars Patrol." If that's not enough, coming up this September is "Fdr: American Badass!" The low-budget, tongue-in-cheek feature stars Barry Bostwick as the wartime leader, who, despite his polio,...

About 56.6% of Disney‘s shares were cast in favor of its controversial executive compensation plan while 42.8% opposed — down from last year when 76.8% supported and 22.7% opposed – according to the preliminary results announced today at the annual meeting in Kansas City. Shareholders also elected the company’s slate of directors; numbers weren’t broken out for each member. Executive pay became a big issue this year after corporate governance analysts Institutional Shareholder Services (Iss) and Glass Lewis & Co urged investors to oppose the package in an advisory vote. Glass Lewis gave Disney a “D” grade on its pay-for-performance analysis — the fourth consecutive year Disney got the grade. “Overall, the Company paid more than its peers, but performed moderately worse than its peers,” the firm said in a recent report. It urged a “no” vote “to signal dissatisfaction with the Company’s executive compensation program and to compel the board and the compensation committee to take corrective action.

The medium of television is often a reflection of our times and sometimes an overly idealized, unrealistic portrayal of American life. As radio programming became nationally broadcast series, they reflected the rural lifestyles and Depression-era standards of its time. As a result, many of these shows were transferred with little change from radio to television. Similarly, as prosperity brighten America’s fortunes, so did the images of life shown in living rooms around the country.

As Iraq War veteran J.R. Martinez hoisted the "Dancing With The Stars" Mirror Ball on Tuesday, countless injured warriors and burn victims walked away with the inspiration to carry on.
"I think J.R. has made an incredibly bold statement to the world, and especially to wounded warriors, that no matter what happens, you can overcome it," military psychologist Tony Franklin told the Leaf Chronicle.
Martinez had every excuse to shy away from the spotlight and just give up hope.
When Martinez's Humvee truck ran over a landmine in Iraq when he was 19, he suffered a coma and intense burns on more than 40 percent of his body. He spent more than two years in the hospital and underwent 33 surgeries, which included painful skin grafts and tissue expansions.
The veteran told the Houston Chronicle that he would cry and yell, "Why are you doing this to me? I don’t even know you!

Anyone that knows anything about the world of movie stuntmen surely knows the name Vic Armstrong. He's been working in the biz for nearly 50 years, first doing all the dangerous leaps, falls, shimmies and fights that actors can't (or won't) do in front of the camera. The movies that he's worked on, and the heroes that he's stunt-doubled for, are icons of cinema, like James Bond, Indiana Jones and Superman. He's moved up from being a stuntman to a competent second unit director to a stunt coordinator. Can you imagine the stories this guy could tell you about working with Sean Connery or Harrison Ford or Christopher Reeve?
This is why I was looking forward to reading Armstrong's memoir of his professional career. The True Adventures of the World's Greatest Stuntman: My Life as Indiana Jones, James Bond, Superman and Other Movie Heroes is a helluva wordy title but it's...

This is it, the season finale. On Sunday I posted my recap for 6x21 'Let it Bleed,' and today I'm covering the second half of Friday's finale event, 'The Man Who Knew Too Much.' It's one of those awkward title situations where you have two episodes close together with practically the same name, as we just a week ago had 'The Man Who Would Be King'... like in Buffy when they had 'Enemies' and 'Earshot' right after each other, and 'Smashed' and 'Wrecked'... those last two always confused me cause it's like, the same thing!
See? This is why I divided the recaps. I ramble. This is of course about Tmwktm, which is a mouthful. I'm also pretty sure the title refers to Sam - see, all the king's horses, and all the king's men... Sam is broken, and a large chunk of this episode will...

Legendary stuntman/action director Vic Armstrong (pictured on the left of Harrison Ford in the photo on the left) recently talked to Movieline about his memoir The True Adventures of the World’s Greatest Stuntman: My Life as Indiana Jones, James Bond, Superman and Other Movie Heroes. While they discussed almost everything he has seen and done in his storied career, it was what was said on the topic of The Amazing Spider-Man that caught my attention. From Movieline... You just completed some directing on Spider-Man, and you admit in your book you weren’t a big fan of the preceding Spider-Man trilogy. What makes the new film different and, hopefully, an improvement? I think the trilogy up until now was starting to lean far too heavily on CGI for the flying and the action and everything else. It was starting to get away from… it’s silly to say “realism” of Spider-Man,...

Three is a magic number on this week's episode of United States of Tara! Why? Because without the word “three” you can’t have the word “threesome” and without the word “threesome,” we wouldn’t have this week’s gay storyline!
Marshall, Lionel and new gay Noah are drinking schnapps and talking babies in Kate’s room in Charmaine’s house. Marshall is vehemently opposed to babies, labeling them "incontinent extensions of the adult desire to rewrite history." Lionel calls his observation both pretentious and stupid, but he uses an "I" statement so it's Ok. Marshall goes on to call out all the "random people [who] mash together and then chunk out kids instead of dealing with the fact they should never have been together in the first place."
We wouldn't be talking about any random people in particular, would we Moosh? Mom and Dad, perhaps?...

“You don’t like anything.”
I get told I’m negative... a lot... pretty much perpetually. It’s been like this damn near my whole life. I don’t think people understand how that affects me. I’m not some armchair despot of media literacy, spewing bile for no reason other than to do so.
