When “The Sympathizer” showrunner and director Park Chan-Wook brainstormed ideas for HBO’s newest miniseries, one scene struck him as a “quintessential American institution and represented the idea of America.” It took place in a steakhouse with several characters coming together.
Based on the best-selling novel by Viet Thanh Nguyen and set at the end of the Vietnam War, “The Sympathizer” follows a captain, played by Hoa Xuande, in the South Vietnamese army who’s secretly spying for the North Vietnamese communists. As Saigon falls and the U.S. retreats, the Captain remains embedded and escapes to Los Angeles. Throughout,...

Phanxine isn’t an actor.
Or so he says, though one might beg to differ after seeing his performance in “Love It or Leave It,” the third episode of HBO’s “The Sympathizer.” Though he’s no stranger to filmmaking, having directed and produced popular features such as the Vietnamese box office hit “Sweet 20,” Phanxine is a first-time performer. In fact, his involvement in “The Sympathizer” only came together after an audition he attended as a prank — more on that later.

With numerous films and TV series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s a daunting proposition for a newcomer to even think about getting caught up on the various characters and story lines.
But Shawn Levy, who directed the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine, says there will be no “homework” required to enjoy his film.
“I was a good student in school. I’ll do my homework as an adult. But I am definitely not looking to do homework when I go to the movies,” Levy told the Associated Press.
He added that his goal was to make the already established fans happy but also create a movie that anyone can enjoy.
“I very much made this film with certainly a healthy respect and gratitude towards the rabid fan base that has peak fluency in the mythology and lore of these characters and this world,” he said. “But I didn’t want to presume that.

When Nicole Kidman was honored with the AFI Life Achievement Award, she spent a large portion of her speech thanking the directors whom she’s worked with throughout the years. The respect for the job, though, doesn’t she mean has any desire to step behind the camera herself.
“I feel like I would be a terrible director because I always have so many ideas. A director has to make choices, and that’s not my strong suit,” Kidman told The Hollywood Reporter on Saturday night on the AFI red carpet, noting that a producer’s duties much more align with her interests. “I’m very good at being passionate and supporting the voices and reading a script and going ‘I love this script,’ or seeing somebody and going, ‘I love this actor, I love this director, how do I support them?’ And they maybe have done nothing [before], but I want to get behind them.

Taylor Swift took to social media on Sunday to react to news that The Tortured Poets Department debuted to 2.61 million units, the highest of any album since Adele’s 2015 release, 25.
“My mind is blown,” Swift wrote on Instagram beneath a carousel of polaroids from the recording process. “I’m completely floored by the love you’ve shown this album.”
Billboard reported Sunday that Tortured Poets debuted at No.1, marking Swift’s 14th chart-topping album in her career, which ties Jay-Z for the most No.1s among solo artists in history.
The album, released April 19, launched with 2.61 million equivalent album units in the U.S., with vinyl sales representing 859,000 of that number. The record hit 1.9 million total traditional album sales, meaning it secured itself as the top-selling album of 2024, far ahead of Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter (the second-most sold) with 228,000.

French studio Mediawan and Germany’s Leonine have signed a deal to merge their operation, forming one of Europe’s biggest film and TV companies.
The all-stock transaction, announced Sunday, will create a mini-major with companies and operations across 13 countries and annual revenues of more than €1 billion ($1.06 billion). Mediawan took a 25 percent stake in Leonine back in 2020. Both companies are backed by private equity group Kkr. The agreement is conditional on regulatory approval.
Mediawan boss Pierre-Antoine Capton will be CEO of the new, merged group, with Leonine head Fred Kogel leading operations in German-speaking territories. Kogel will also join Mediawan’s executive committee.
Both Mediawan, launched in 2015 by Capton, Xavier Niel and Matthieu Pigasse, and Leonine, which Kogel founded in 2019, have followed similar strategies of tapping private equity funding to buy up independent production and distribution companies in Europe. Among the titles produced by Mediawan-owned labels include Netflix hit Call My Agent,...

Solitary confinement, theoretically used only when a prisoner is at high risk of harm to or from others, has long been regarded as a severe punitive measure best applied in small doses. The United Nations’ “Mandela Rules” recommend inmates be placed in such conditions for no more than 15 days, to avoid significant damage to physical or psychological health. Yet “The Strike” spotlights one U.S. correctional facility where until recently convicts were held in solitary for decades on end. JoeBill Munoz and Lucas Guilkey’s documentary, premiering at Hot Docs, provides a polished, informative overview of protests — both in and outside the prison — that eventually succeeded in changing abusive policies.

Saturday’s AFI Life Achievement Award Gala marked the first ever public Kidman-Urban family outing, with the couple’s two teenage daughters making their red carpet debut.
“There’s an enormous amount of luck in my life, but there’s also the most important thing — love, big, big love,” Kidman said from the stage inside the event, where she accepted the Life Achievement Award. Gesturing to Urban and their children, she told the crowd, “Right there is the love of my life and the loves of my life. My daughters have never been anywhere publicly with me on a red carpet, tonight was their first night, so they’re here, Sunday and Faith.”
Sunday, 15, and Faith, 13, joined their mother and father alongside several of their cousins and and Kidman’s sister at the event’s family table.

Spoiler Alert: This article contains plot details for “Challengers,” now playing in theaters.
Josh O’Connor never had a churro until he shot “Challengers.”
The British actor and his co-star Mike Faist enjoy the fried doughy treat in one of the film’s most suggestive scenes. In short, Patrick (O’Connor) is visiting his girlfriend Tashi (Zendaya) and his best friend Art (Faist) at Stanford when the two young men catch up in a cafeteria. They’re sitting face-to-face as they devour the churros.
“We actually only did two takes of that scene,” O’Connor says at the drama’s Los Angeles premiere. “They were delicious. My first churro was that day.”
So why churros? As if that even needs to be asked. “Because they’re a delicious snack,” screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes says, while grinning. “They’re very popular in California – that’s why.”

Nicole Kidman was honored with the 49th AFI Life Achievement Award on Saturday night, as an A-list group of her friends and collaborators looked back on her long Hollywood career.
Reese Witherspoon, Morgan Freeman, Naomi Watts, Zoe Saldaña, Aaron Sorkin, Zac Efron, Miles Teller, Joey King, Mike Myers and husband Keith Urban all took the Dolby Theatre stage throughout the event to pay tribute to Kidman. To close out the evening, Meryl Streep presented her with the award.
Streep — joking after a clip was shown, “did anyone notice that [costume designer] Ann Roth gave her my nose in The Hours? You’re welcome” — took the time to reflect on working opposite Kidman in season two of Big Little Lies.
“For me, the very, very hardest part of being incessantly called the greatest actress of my generation,” Streep teased as the audience roared, throwing her hand theatrically over her head, “What is the hardest part?...

Game, set, now what to make of this match?
“Challengers,” a sexy, subversive, R-rated drama set in the world of tennis, easily took first place at a sluggish domestic box office this weekend with $15 million from 3,477 locations. On one hand, it’s a respectable result for an artsy movie aimed at discerning, adult audiences, but what keeps it from being a championship performance is that “Challengers” has a hefty $55 million budget (to say nothing of its marketing costs). The Amazon MGM Studios release will need strong word-of-mouth if it’s going to keep rallying — and next week brings Universal’s “The Fall Guy,” a Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt action-comedy that marks the start of summer blockbuster season. The competition only stands to get fiercer from here.

Anne Hathaway is opening up about how stress impacted her earlier in her acting career and how she finally learned to manage it.
During an interview on The New York Times podcast The Interview, the Oscar-winning actress shared that she has likely played “chronically stressed out young women” because she used to be “a really stressed out young woman” in real life.
“I was a really stressed out young woman,” Hathaway recalled. “And as a formerly chronically stressed young woman, which leads to, you know, all manner of things, I just remember thinking one day, ‘You are taking this for granted, you are taking your life for granted,'” referring to her career success at the time.
She added, “You have no idea. Something could fall through the sky and that will be lights out for you. So when I find myself, like, the old instincts rising, I just tell myself,...

Zendaya isn’t shutting down the idea of potentially reviving her music career eventually.
The Challengers star made a recent appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show, where she was asked about the music she has released in the past.
“I love music, and it’s something that’s been special to me,” Zendaya told host Jennifer Hudson. “I think being in the music industry, maybe it, it didn’t kill the joy of music, but it’s when you put music and business together. Sometimes it cannot feel so good.”
Zendaya released her debut self-titled album in 2013, which featured her hit single “Replay.” And while she has prioritized her acting career over music in recent years, she teased that when the “right timing” presents itself, she may release something again.
“You know, I think if the right timing and it came, because I like creating it for myself, but if there was a moment,...

The annual White House Correspondents Dinner may be dubbed the inside-the-beltway “Nerd Prom” in some circles. Still, this year’s soirée, which took place on Saturday night at the Washington Hilton, was the hottest ticket in the nation’s capital — maybe the entire nation — as President Joe Biden and the First Lady sat alongside the Hollywood elite and senior government officials mingled with actors, rappers and rockers.
They were all gathered to toast free speech and watch the president and Saturday Night Live Colin Jost roast Donald Trump, the state of the media, and in a common theme of the night, the commander-in-chief’s age.
Before the event began, hundreds of protesters had gathered outside the Hilton in the Adams Morgan neighborhood of Washington to confront attendees and encourage journalists to boycott the event. Hollywood stars, journalists and prominent politicians were met with a crowd of protesters of the Israel-Hamas war outside Saturday’s White House Correspondents Dinner.
There has been growing public discord over the war and President Joe Biden’s handling of the conflict, as well as mainstream media’s coverage of it.
This year’s event at the Washington Hilton in Washington, D.C. — where the dinner has been held for decades — is headlined by Saturday Night Live star Colin Jost, with several stars also in attendance, including Chris Pine, Molly Ringwald, Questlove and Rachel Brosnahan. Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are also at the dinner.
However, attendees were greeted by demonstrators holding banners and chanting “Free, free Palestine” and calls for a “ceasefire” as they arrived, according to videos posted on social media. At one point, protesters also dropped a Palestinian flag out of one of the Washington Hilton’s windows.

The Netflix miniseries “Baby Reindeer” became a surprise hit following its release earlier this month, telling the story of a struggling standup comic who offers kindness to a woman at a pub — who then responds with intense stalking.
A woman, 58, who claims she is the real-life figure who inspired the fictionalized character “Martha” in “Baby Reindeer,” told the Daily Mail that writer-director Richard Gadd is “bullying an older woman on television for fame and fortune.”
While inspired by real life, with the lead character based on Gadd, it’s not a documentary. Gadd has described it as “lightly fictionalized” and told GQ, “We’ve gone to such great lengths to disguise her to the point that I don’t think she would recognize herself.”
But he then asked the public to stop trying to guess who may or may not have inspired the story, writing on Instagram, “Please don’t...

The alleged real-life stalker from Baby Reindeer has spoken out following the show’s success on Netflix.
An unnamed woman, who claims to be the inspiration behind Jessica Gunning’s Martha in the new, popular series, told the Daily Mail she was considering legal action for defamation following the release of the Richard Gadd project.
Baby Reindeer follows Gadd’s Donny Dunn, a struggling comedian who encounters a lonely woman at the bar where he works. The chance encounter, during which he offers her a free cup of tea, spirals over several months as Martha is revealed to be a dangerous, serial stalker. Over the course of multiple years, she sent him more than 41,000 emails, 744 tweets, 100 pages of letters and 350 hours of voicemails.
While speaking with the tabloid, the woman insisted that Gadd was actually the one obsessed with her. “He’s using Baby Reindeer to stalk me now,” she said.

There’s no rule that says that when the son or daughter of a famous filmmaker becomes a director too, he or she has to follow in their parent’s artistic footsteps. But the children of director David Cronenberg have turned out to be chips off the old shock-theater block. In movies like “Possessor” and “Infinity Pool,” the 44-year-old Brandon Cronenberg has proved himself to be a skillful purveyor of body horror and I-dare-you-not-to-look-away extremity. And now, with “Humane,” the 39-year-old Caitlin Cronenberg has directed her own first feature, a dark-as-midnight domestic thriller about how climate change, totalitarianism, and euthanasia all go together. The movie, which takes the form of a dinner party from hell, is Caitlin Cronenberg’s own thing, but it’s all about crimes of the future.

Harvey Weinstein has been hospitalized in New York City, days after the New York Court of Appeals overturned his 2020 rape conviction.
Attorney Arthur Aidala said Saturday that Weinstein was admitted to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan for a battery of tests, according to the Associated Press.
“They examined him and sent him to Bellevue. It seems like he needs a lot of help, physically,” Aidala said. “He’s got a lot of problems. He’s getting all kinds of tests. He’s somewhat of a train wreck health wise.”
Frank Dwyer, a spokesperson with the New York City Department of Correction, said Weinstein remains in custody at Bellevue.
“Mr. Weinstein has a history of high blood pressure, heart issues, and a myriad of other health conditions. The trip from the Walsh Rmu to NYC triggered some of the health issues that warranted closer monitoring,” Juda Engelmayer, Weinstein’s spokesperson, told Variety in a statement.

Amid the M&a drama enveloping Paramount Global, Bob Bakish is about to step down as CEO after eight years at the helm of Shari Redstone’s media empire.
Bakish is expected to resign under pressure as early as Monday. The executive has been with Paramount and its Viacom predecessor since 1997. He was recruited by Redstone in 2016 to help bring order to a company that had descended into public legal brawling among shareholders and a battle for control between Redstone and former Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman. Word of Bakish’s pending exit first surfaced Friday in the Wall Street Journal.
At present, Paramount‘s board of directors is deep in exclusive acquisitions talks with Skydance Media and RedBird Capital. Another group, Sony Pictures and Apollo Global Management, is poised to field a formal all-cash offer for the company next week as the May 3 expiration date of the exclusive negotiating window with Skydance nears.

“Screams Before Silence,” a documentary from Israeli production company Kastina Communications (“Fauda”), begins with a note that viewer discretion is advised. As trigger warnings go, this one is exceptionally understated. Though the film runs just 60 minutes, it’s often so challenging to watch that it seems to last twice as long.
To be clear, that’s not a criticism of the work itself — director Anat Stalinsky has done an immensely powerful job bringing us back to the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks on Israel, which ignited the region’s still-raging war.

Jerry Seinfeld revealed he still thinks about a heckler who called him out for one of his jokes during a comedy set over 30 years ago.
The comedian stopped by In Depth With Graham Bensinger to promote his upcoming film, Unfrosted. During the conversation, he looked back on a heckler getting under his skin at a 1993 Boston show, where Adam Sandler served as his opening act.
“I had this amazing bit about weddings,” he told Graham Bensinger. “It was fantastic. It was so long. It covered everything. And I worked on it and worked on it and worked on it. It takes me forever.”
He explained that a lot of the time, comedians will spend several years improving jokes and testing out bits until they feel like they’ve finally made it perfect. “I start into the bit and somebody yells, ‘Heard it,'” he said. “And that was a tough one.

He explained that a lot of the time, comedians will spend several years improving jokes and testing out bits until they feel like they’ve finally made it perfect. “I start into the bit and somebody yells, ‘Heard it,'” he said. “And that was a tough one.

Ray Chan, the art director and production designer for Marvel Studios who contributed to Guardians of the Galaxy, three Avengers movies, the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine and more, has died. He was 56.
Chan died Tuesday near his home in Wales, his family announced. No cause of death was divulged.
“Ray truly was one of the best, in so many ways,” they said. “He had an exuberance for life, which was tragically cut short and will be sorely missed. He loved his career and lived a rich and wonderful life, and his memory will live on through all those he knew and the films he helped make happen.”
Chan served as supervising art director on Thor: The Dark World (2013), Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), Doctor Strange (2016) and the Avengers films Age of Ultron (2015), Infinity War (2018) and Endgame (2019).

Nicole Kidman has been an international treasure going on four decades. Whether you’re tracking her many wigs (“The Undoing” is our favorite), admiring her textured and committed performances, or just standing up and saluting before every AMC Theatres showing, you’re probably honoring her in some way.
While five best actress Oscar nominations and one win (for “The Hours”) have been adequate markers of her success and endurance, conversations have been brewing for years about a lack of recognition for her remarkable artistic consistency.
“How many times does Nicole Kidman have to prove herself?” asked author Anne Helen Peterson in a 2017 essay for BuzzFeed, one that examined how esteem is or isn’t doled out to women in Hollywood, using Kidman as a template.
“While male actors coast on the brilliance of a single performance for years, female stars have to reapply for greatness on a yearly basis, fighting...

As Zendaya’s star rises in the wake of “Dune: Part Two” and now “Challengers,” the tennis film reminds viewers that she also has Marvel’s “Spider-Man” franchise with Tom Holland under her belt.
“Challengers” watches Zendaya play a fierce and ambitious woman whose career-stopping injury puts her in the position of coaching her professional tennis-playing husband, Art Donaldson (Mike Faist). Strategizing, she decides that a low-stakes Challenger tournament in New Rochelle might get some of Art’s mojo back — but things get complicated when the washed-up Patrick Zweig (Josh O’Connor) takes the wild card slot to try and qualify for the U.S. Open. Patrick dated Tashi when she was in college at Stanford alongside Art, who used to play doubles with Patrick when they went to boarding school.
A line in the film calls to mind the actress’ rendition of “Mj,” aka Michelle in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Zendaya’s romance-tennis drama Challengers is battling to serve up a $15 million opening at the box office but will have enough points to win the weekend match either way.
MGM Amazon Studio made the bold decision to open Luca Guadagnino’s sexy adult drama nationwide, versus a platform release, considering it’s more of an arthouse movie than a commercial play. MGM is still predicting a $15.2 million start based on Friday’s gross of $6.2 million from 3,477 cinemas and Zendaya’s huge fan base. Rival studios, however, have it coming in anywhere between $13.5 million and $15 million (heading into the weekend, tracking suggested the latter number).
Audiences aren’t embracing the R-rated film to the degree that reviewers did, giving it a B+ CinemaScore. Female moviegoers made up 58 percent of Friday’s audience, while a whopping 76 percent of ticket buyers were between ages 18 and 34. Challengers is playing best on the two coasts,...

Since childhood, Kamau Coleman found solace in spending his free days and weekends at a family friend’s duplex apartment near the Venice Beach strip. While the property had been around since 1964, it had never been upgraded outside of basic maintenance.
“You can imagine we were at the ocean, so everything rusted,” Coleman tells The Hollywood Reporter. “For example, the stairs, the legs went directly into the sand and there was literally nothing holding it.”
Around the early stages of the pandemic lockdown, the building’s previous owner decided to retire, paying the tenants to vacate the property and also giving Coleman and his business partners an opportunity to get involved — hence The Redline Venice Hotel was born.
The building stands out as the only Black-owned apartment hotel on the strip, offering both short-term stays and reservations of a month or more. The name “Redline” carries a dual meaning. It symbolizes racial discrimination in housing,...

“Challengers” netted a $6.2 million opening day from 3,477 North American theaters, a figure that includes $1.9 million from preview screenings. Amazon MGM Studios’ love-triangle drama is set to match industry projections for a $15 million debut. The tennis film also gets extra revenue from tickets for premium large-format auditoriums, including some Imax screens.
The Zendaya starrer will easily launch above the competition to claim the top spot on domestic charts — not small potatoes for an original, R-rated drama in the age of studio IP addiction. But “Challengers” does carry a $55 million production budget, so it’ll have to keep rallying into the summer months to score a profit in theaters. Reviews have been stellar, while early ticket buyers lean positive with audience survey firm Cinema Score tallying a “B+” grade. Amazon MGM has good buzz on its side for the weeks ahead.

The box office is going through its customary late April slowdown prior to the start of the summer box office in May, though the lack of a major release on the level of pre-covid hits like “Shazam!” or “The Fate of the Furious” at the start of the month has caused overall grosses to sink lower.
That has allowed Amazon MGM’s “Challengers” to take the No. 1 spot as the only film with more than $10 million grossed this weekend, earning $6.1 million on Friday from 3,477 theaters as industry estimates have it making $15.2 million this weekend, consistent with pre-release projections.
Directed by Luca Guadagnino and starring Zendaya, the mid-level budgeted tennis drama was acquired by Amazon MGM as part of a two-film package with the director’s 2022 horror romance “Bones and All.
