Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson recently made his grand return to wrestling with the WWE, but the star might be taking his "heel" persona a little too far these days.
There's absolutely nothing unusual in Hollywood when it comes to the delicate art of managing high-profile egos -- just ask Vin Diesel, who knows all too well from his days bumping heads with his famous co-star during the "Fast and Furious" saga -- but things seem to have escalated to a whole new level on the set of Amazon Studios' upcoming Christmas film "Red One." That's the latest scuttlebutt according to extensive reporting by Umberto Gonzalez of The Wrap, who paints an alarming picture of habitual lateness, deeply unprofessional behavior, and producing inexperience in several crucial roles. All of these factors seem to have come together to turn what was initially envisioned as a straight-to-streaming original and a potential franchise starter...

Sam Levinson is moving the “Euphoria” storyline away from high school into early adulthood, and HBO agreed to give the showrunner more time to get it right, TheWrap has learned.
The racy teenage show — one of HBO’s biggest hits — was already delayed because of last year’s double strikes. But the decision to make the characters older will also serve to make the show’s edgy theme of sex and drugs less risqué.
Levinson’s last show, “The Idol,” was canceled after widespread accusations that it was exploitative rather than just edgy.
An individual close to the production told TheWrap that Levinson’s writing schedule was delayed during the strikes, and the network “wanted to give him more time to break the story, because there’s a lot more back and forth now that the show is changing in this way.”

This is going to stun anyone who grew up on 21st century superhero cinema (which kicked off in 2000 with Bryan Singer's "X-Men" and only now seems to be on the wane), but what if I told you that in the 1970s, there were television series dedicated to the Hulk, Wonder Woman, and Spider-Man, and they weren't the main small-screen pop cultural obsessions for sci-fi/fantasy fans? Not even close.
This is because every kid in America was crazy about "The Six Million Dollar Man."
Based on the novel "Cyborg" by Martin Caidin, "The Six Million Dollar Man" starred Lee Majors as astronaut Steve Austin, who's saved from certain death after the crash of an experimental aircraft when he is transformed into an experimental superhuman being via bionic implants. Apple has suspended additional overall and first-look deals with creators as the Writers Guild and Screen Actors Guild strikes continue, an individual with knowledge told TheWrap. Those affected are non-writing producers who no longer have projects moving forward or in later stages of production.
The suspended deals include those with Adam McKay’s Hyperobject Industries and Natalie Portman’s MountainA. However, other deals for projects where producers can continue to engage in non-writing, non-acting work are continuing.
That includes Martin Scorsese’s deal as he finishes “Killers of the Flower Moon,” set for release next month and already screening for critics. Another deal still in place is that with Tom Hanks’ Playtone, producers of the upcoming “Masters of the Air” limited series for Apple TV+.
Apple did not immediately return a request for comment.
An overall deal is an agreement between a studio and a production company or creative talent.

Diane Jurgens has left The Walt Disney Company after three years in the role of chief information officer, TheWrap has learned. This departure makes her the second C-level executive to vacate the studio in just under three months. Christine McCarthy, previously the chief financial officer, left in June to take a medical absence.
According to the Wall Street Journal, which first reported the news, Jurgens told colleagues in a farewell email in late August that she was leaving Disney “to pursue new adventures.”
Jurgens joined Disney in October 2020 under then-ceo Bob Chapek. She was responsible for the company’s enterprise technology organization on a global scale. Iger returned as CEO in November of last year, essentially ousting his own hand-picked successor. Kareem Daniel, a top Chapek-era executive, left the very next day. Daniel’s division, Disney Media and Entertainment Distribution, has since been dismantled with more oversight and authority being given back to creative executives.

DC Comics has some of the most iconic characters “embedded” in popular culture. One of them is Batman, but his initial supporting characters became more popular as the years passed, and one of them is Dick Grayson. The first Robin and the original Boy Wonder has been a fan-favorite for decades, especially when he assumed the mantle of Nightwing, a superhero who helps his adoptive father and protects a city located in New Jersey, Blüdhaven. Despite his popularity in comics, there haven’t been that good live-action adaptation, with HBO’s ‘Titans’ being the closest to the source material.
For years, there have been rumors that a ‘Nightwing’ movie will be developed for the ‘Snyderverse,’ but the potential project’s sporadic updates have been less frequent, especially with the DC Universe reboot. The recent confirmation of industry journalists saw that the ‘Nightwing’ project might as well be canceled – for good.

It's a bit of an understatement to say that fans of the DC Universe haven't exactly enjoyed the smoothest or most consistent path to seeing their favorite comic book heroes translated to the big screen in recent years. The Zack Snyder era is well and truly in the rearview mirror, that weird in-between phase with no real guiding force to speak of is drawing to an end, and the James Gunn and Peter Safran regime is just about set to take over. All that turnover behind the scenes of Warner Bros. Discovery has left a serious amount of uncertainty in its wake, leading to a spate of severely underperforming blockbusters in a row and all sorts of chaos over which A-list actors will be returning in their iconic roles or not. Add in the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes and it seemed as if DC's newest effort, "Blue Beetle,...

The first reactions to DC Studios’ “Blue Beetle,” starring Xolo Maridueña, are flying in, with early viewers calling the film a “huge surprise.” While some of the reactions quibble with parts feeling shaky or playing things a bit too silly, they mostly praise the film’s action, heart and specific touchstones to Latino culture.
The film, which hits theaters on Aug. 18, follows teenager Jaime Reyes (Xolo Maridueña) and his encounter with an alien relic that attaches to his body, bestowing the adolescent with extraordinary powers. Blue Beetle, notably, is one of the most preeminent Latino superheroes in comic book history. The rest of the “Blue Beetle” cast is predominantly Latino, including Bruna Marquezine, George Lopez, Raoul Max Trujillo, Adriana Barraza, Elpidia Carrillo, Damián Alcázar and Belissa Escobedo, along with Susan Sarandon.

With Blue Beetle set to hit theaters in just one week, the first reactions to the DC movie have begun to emerge on social media. The reaction has been quite positive overall, as it usually is at this stage, but those who saw the film have praised it as fun, hilarious, and a love letter to Latino culture.
I was so profoundly moved how the film also captured our latinidad and nuance. A star is born in Xolo Maridueña and I hope he continues in the role in the future Dcu.

The #BlueBeetle movie is mostly a blast.
Some is too silly or childish for me, a lot had me laughing loud (George Lopez!). Practical suit rocks. The Latino representation is awesome.
Enjoyed the family-centric stakes, solid action beats. Overall, it’s fun. pic.twitter.com/5qzWIkmDyE

The first batch of social media reactions just dropped for director Angel Manuel Soto’s “Blue Beetle.” The picture is among the last films in the current DC Films continuity before James Gunn and Peter Safron’s DC Studios reset. However, Gunn has stated that he considers the film, or at least the characters and actors, to be part of the new world’s long-form narrative.
As TheWrap recently reported, “Blue Beetle” survived three different regime changes at Warner Bros. It was announced in December 2018 under Time Warner. The feature was cast and prepped under the AT&T-owned WarnerMedia. It began production shortly after the deal that created Warner Bros. Discovery closed in 2022. Originally planned for an HBO Max premiere, it eventually received an upgrade to a theatrical release.

San Diego Comic-Con might have had one of its weirdest-ever years, thanks to the Hollywood strike and subsequent lack of studios or stars at the event.
But weird isn’t the same thing as bad. Even amid the reduction of formerly front-and-center spaces to afterthoughts, some long-overlooked pillars of Sdcc had an incredible week — as did the fans.
Yep, it’s time to rank the winners and losers of San Diego Comic-Con 2023 y’all. Who made the list? And more importantly, how? Read on to find out.
Note: You’ll notice this list has more winners than losers. Despite how odd it was, Sdcc 2023 was a real good time.

Comic-Con and the Party Report return to a SAG-AFTRA and WGA strike affected San Diego where celebrities avoided the party scene because of guild rules. As a result, EW canceled their annual (and usually star-studded) bash; an indication of a very different year at Sdcc — and on the comic-con parties scene. But the con raged on just the same, so here are TheWrap’s photos from some of Sdcc 2023’s best parties.

The annual Fandom, presented by Paramount+ and Electronic Arts, Z2 and Pinfinity, was easily and clearly con’s best and classiest bash on Thursday night.

This year’s San Diego Comic-Con was always going to be unlike any other, but if there’s one thing you can always count on at Sdcc, it’s the cosplay. Last year saw cosplayers get creative to accommodate mask mandates, but 2023 saw a return to decked-out (and sometimes teched-out), dressed-to-the-nines costumes.

The Hollywood Double Strike and the subsequent exodus of studios and stars from San Diego Comic-Con 2023 didn’t cause fans to stay away — huge crowds lined up outside the Convention Center on Thursday morning before the convention floor opened, and once the doors were pulled back, things were as packed as ever.
But for Hall H, normally the site of Comic-Con’s biggest panels (and largest crowd), it was a very different story.
The Room seats 6500 people and in a normal year, it’s at full capacity well before the first panel begins, leaving thousands of fans still waiting in line outside, hoping that enough people leave to make room for them to get in before the day ends.
That was not the case on Thursday.

According to a Comic-Con security staffer, as late as 30 minutes before the panel began the room had maybe 1500 people inside.

“Oppenheimer director Christopher Nolan called the walkout of the stars of his film during last Thursday’s premiere in London a “bittersweet moment,” saying he hoped the ongoing SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes are resolved quickly.
Nolan addressed the moment, during which stars including Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon and Florence Pugh walked out in solidarity with the actors’ strike, which the union had indicated was going to happen during the premiere.
“It was a bittersweet moment,” Nolan said Tuesday in a sit-down interview with the “Today” show. “We were all there. We were very fortunate. We had the opportunity to somewhat celebrate the film. And the actors were all there to support but then when the time came had to [put] down tools and go off in support of all of their fellow actors and then support the writers, as well.”

Summer’s beginning was marked with lots of festivals, charity galas and Spider-Man’s return to blockbuster season, as stars of all sorts soaked up the sun, from Napa to Hollywood to the Caribbean Sea and beyond. Keanu Reeves returned to his old rock-star status at BottleRock Napa, strapping on his bass with Dogstar after 20+ years (and Lizzo knocked everyone out at that posh music/food/wine/brew fest); meanwhile, Kaley Cuoco’s “Based on a True Story” brought its mysterious fun to L.A.’s Pacific Design Center and Chateau Marmont and Sir Richard Branson set sail on the Summit at Sea in the Bahamas.

This summer might feel a lot like the summers pre-Covid, if only because from June to August there are several massive movies you’ll want to see in a theater. Starting June 2 with the arrival of “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” the summer looks bright and chock-a-block with bombastic features directed by some of the biggest directors out there.
If there’s any trend worth noting about this summer, it’s how franchise-heavy everything is. From a new continuation of “The Meg” to the (final?) installment of “Indiana Jones,” everything has franchise potential, even something like “Barbie” which could start a whole trend of live-action Barbie films.
On top of that, there’s a great combination of IP titles, like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the “Mission: Impossible” series, as well as those with tangential connections to established franchises, like how “Last Voyage of the Demeter” is kind of a new Dracula movie.

Marvel’s “Thunderbolts” is the latest production to find itself stymied by the ongoing WGA writers’ strike. The upcoming superhero team-up movie was set to begin filming in Atlanta in mid-June, but production has been paused due to the labor dispute, TheWrap has confirmed.
Scheduled for release July 26, 2024, “Thunderbolts” will be directed by Jake Schreier from a script by “Black Widow” writer Eric Pearson, who is (along with the rest of the Writers Guild of America) now on strike.
Like the comics, “Thunderbolts” is effectively Marvel’s version of “Suicide Squad,” following several popular villains from previous Marvel projects assembled to carry out missions for the U.S. government. Returning to the MCU are Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster, Wyatt Russell as U.S. Agent and Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus also returns as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine.

Warner Bros. held the first-ever public screening of “The Flash” on Monday night in Las Vegas during CinemaCon 2023, and 24 hours later the social media embargo has expired. And you know what that means: The first reactions are in.
And, surprise: They’re… mostly rapturous. People who saw it loved it. Well, mostly. There were some criticisms too, harsh ones even. But even the nay-sayers had at least some nice things to say about it.
Now, the reactions of journalists at a highly curated industry event like CinemaCon don’t necessarily guarantee critical acclaim and box office gold to follow. But it has to feel like a good sign for Warner Bros. Discovery, which has had what can politely be described as a very tough year thanks to this movie.
Naturally, those reading this know that “The Flash” has been saddled with far more controversy than hype. That’s of course...

Don’t expect the hype for “The Flash” to slow down.
Following months of breathless advanced praise for the film from folks like DC Films boss James Gunn, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, and potentially even Tom Cruise, journalists and junketeers got to see the first public screening of the superhero film and added their huzzahs to the din of excitement.
On Tuesday night at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, Warner Bros. debuted “The Flash” for theater owners and select media. According to Variety, “the finished product elicited plenty of cheers, laughs and maybe a few tears in the room at Caesars Palace.”
Indeed, the first wave of reaction tweets expressed wide-eyed awe and astonishment. Here’s one example from Fandango’s Erik Davis: “Forget DC, it is without a doubt among the best superhero films ever made. An all-timer. Inventive storytelling, Fantastic action sequences, great cast. So Many nerdy details.

First reactions to The Flash are quickly racing onto social media. Select members of the press and guests of CinemaCon experienced DC’s latest superhero epic earlier this evening, with the movie garnering some of the most positive reactions I’ve ever seen. Speaking with JoBlo’s Chris Bumbray after the screening, he described the film as “fantastic.” Others in my socials and DMs are screaming, telling me I’m in for the “ride of my life” when the movie hits theaters on June 16, 2023. I’m not jealous. I’m not jealous at all.
While combing Twitter for reactions to the Scarlet Speedster’s latest adventure, I’ve gathered many comments and observations about the Andy Muschietti-directed odyssey into the Dcu.

The first reactions to “The Flash” are in. It’s been hyped as one of the greatest superhero movies ever made — by DC’s new executives, by David Zaslav, even by Tom Cruise — and is now being anointed by one of the first public audiences that watched it at CinemaCon.
The CinemaCon crowd that saw “The Flash” in the Colosseum at Caesar’s Palace Tuesday night was quite literally screaming with excitement, with some press seemingly losing their minds at some of the film’s late reveals. The film is a crowd pleaser from start to finish, a multiverse and time travel movie in the vein of “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” and even classics like “Back to the Future.” Whether or not it’s actually the greatest superhero movie ever made will be debated once more critics get the chance to see it,...

Amid his ongoing domestic violence case in New York, Jonathan Majors has now lost a large chunk of representatives, TheWrap has confirmed.
On Monday, Majors was dropped by his longtime management company, Entertainment 360. The specific reason the company parted ways with the actor it has represented for several years is not known, but according to Deadline, which first reported the break up, it is related to his personal behavior.
Entertainment 360’s decision to drop Majors was preceded by the actor’s PR team at The Lede Company, who dumped him as a client at some point in the last few weeks.
Majors was arrested in New York City on Saturday, March 25 after a woman, reported to be his girlfriend, called 911 to report that he had assaulted her the night before.

The next “Star Wars” movie, to be directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chino, has lost its screenwriters. TheWrap has confirmed that Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson (“Counterpart”) have left the untitled, unannounced project.
“’Star Wars’ scripts are a lot like James Bond scripts or most tentpoles for that matter. It takes a number of writers to get it all the way home,” said an insider with knowledge of the project. “Script writing at this level is a lot like pitching in baseball. You have your starter, your middle relief, your specialists, your set up man and your closer. But almost no one can pitch a complete game.”
While details are still being kept under wraps, it was thought to be far enough along that Disney and Lucasfilm would announce the project at Star Wars Celebration next month in London. If the project ends up getting made, it will be the first “Star...

Tim Burton is staying in the Jenna Ortega business, as the ‘Wednesday’ star is currently eyeing a role in “Beetlejuice 2,” TheWrap has confirmed.
The film will be the sequel to Burton’s 1988 comedy classic that also marked his first collaboration with Michael Keaton. He’s expected to direct and Keaton is likely to return as the devious poltergeist-for-hire. Budget and other logistical concerns are still being resolved, so Ortega’s role in the film isn’t a done deal just yet — but if she ends up joining, she’ll be Lydia’s daughter — Lydia is of course the goth teenager from the original film played by Winona Ryder.
If all goes according to plan the film will begin shooting in early Summer in London.

Christina Hodson Was Apparently Working On A Batman Beyond Movie For Michael Keaton, But Not Anymore
It's been a week full of rumors about the future of the DC film universe, and some of them have just been substantiated by The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision newsletter. Among them? News that "Birds of Prey" and "The Flash" screenwriter Christina Hodson was working on a script for a "Batman Beyond" film spun off from "The Flash," which the trade confirms after the scoop was earlier shared on The Hot Mic by Jeff Sneider and by The Wrap's Umberto Gonzalez.
Unfortunately, the latest update says Hodson's script is, at the very least, on pause in the wake of James Gunn and Peter Safran taking over what was recently renamed DC Studios as co-CEOs and co-chairs. According to Heat Vision, Hodson had already pitched her script and started writing it before being told to stop about two weeks after the DC overhaul.
While this sounds like bad news...

After rumors started swirling about a new Batman movie starring Michael Keaton getting scrapped by DC Studios, news hounds began sniffing around for answers about the unannounced project. According to The Hot Mic Podcast‘s Jeff Sneider, The Flash writer Christina Hodson was in the process of writing a spinoff revolving around Michael Keaton’s Batman. The spinoff would have served as a reboot, with Keaton playing an older Bruce Wayne mentoring a new Caped Crusader. After digging, The Wrap‘s Umberto Gonzalez said Hodson’s script was for an adaptation of Batman Beyond, a story involving Terry McGinnis as the new Dark Knight under an older Bruce’s tutelage.
We need to learn more to know how deep into the project Hodson was before DC pulled the plug on this curious endeavor. Naturally, DC Studios and Warner Bros. Discovery remain mum on the matter, which neither confirms nor denies...

Miracles happen, once in awhile, when you believe! Today’s miracle is that a third “Princess Diaries” movie is in development.
According to an insider with knowledge of the project, “Supergirl” writer Aadrita Mukerji will pen the script for Disney, marking the third installment in the Anne Hathaway-led series. That said, Hathaway has not struck a deal to return yet, but has been openly supportive of the franchise continuing. Reps for Hathaway did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.
The first two “Princess Diaries” films starred Anne Hathaway as Mia Thermopolis, who learns very suddenly that she is actually a princess, and the heir apparent in the country of Genovia. Her grandmother, Queen Clarisse Renaldi, was played by Julie Andrews in both films.
In recent months, Andrews cast doubt on another movie ever being made, telling Jimmy Fallon in June, “Honestly, I doubt it, because I’m that much older,...

Optimism is growing around Warner Bros./DC’s “Black Adam,” the first superhero film for lead star Dwayne Johnson. Rival distributors and analysts tell TheWrap that the first round of box office tracking has the blockbuster earning an opening weekend of over 70 million, which would be the highest opening weekend the industry has seen since Disney/Marvel’s “Thor: Love and Thunder” three months ago.
Johnson has been seen for years as one of the few remaining movie stars that could drive box office numbers on his own, but “Black Adam” is new territory for him, placing him in the lead role of a film that’s part of one of Hollywood’s biggest franchises. If it does meet or exceed tracking, “Black Adam” would set a new career record for Johnson in a lead role.

Weeks after Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav said he was looking for a Kevin Feige-like figure to run DC at Warner Bros., producer Dan Lin is in talks to take on the role, a source with knowledge tells TheWrap. “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” is garnering ecstatic first reactions from film journalists following its August 16 world premiere. The movie is being singled out for its “spectacular” martial arts-driven action sequences, which many journalists agree bring a whole new energy to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “Shang-Chi” marks the studio tentpole debut of indie favorite Destin Daniel Cretton, who first broke out with his SXSW favorite “Short Term 12.” Cretton’s other features include “The Glass Castle” and “Just Mercy.”
Marvel’s brief synopsis for “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” reads: “Following the events of ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ Shang-Chi is drawn into the clandestine Ten Rings organization and is forced to confront the past he thought he left behind.” The movie stars “Kim’s Convenience” star Simu Liu in the title role opposite Awkwafina, Meng’er Zhang, Fala Chen, Florian Munteanu, Benedict Wong, Michelle Yeoh, and Wong Kar Wai favorite Tony Leung.

Johnny Depp said Friday that he had been forced out of his role in J.K. Rowling’s “Fantastic Beasts 3” — just days after losing a libel case in which a U.K. judge ruled that “wife beater” accusations by Depp’s ex-wife Amber Heard were “substantially true.”
The studio intends to recast Depp’s role as the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwalt in the untitled third film in the series, which is currently shooting in the U.K.
“I wish to let you know that I have been asked to resign by Warner Bros. from my role as Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts and I have respected and agreed to that request,” the actor wrote on Instagram. “I intend to prove that the allegations against me are false.”
The production is not expected to be delayed significantly and no scenes will need to be reshot, an individual with knowledge of the situation told TheWrap.

Confirmation that the Zack Snyder cut of Justice League is heading to HBO Max opened up a host of questions about the future of the Dceu, and one of the most burning of all concerns the involvement of Ben Affleck as Batman. Rumors that the Gone Girl star will return to shoot new scenes and complete his character arc started circling when the project was announced, but they were seemingly shot down on Twitter earlier this month by Heroic Hollywood’s Umberto Gonzalez.
However, that doesn’t appear to be the end of the speculation as the leaker who originally broke the Batfleck news – Taylor Murphy at The Cultured Nerd – is vehemently standing by his claims and has presented apparent evidence backing up the legitimacy of his sources.

Kate Kane will hang up her Batwoman cowl too. The new lead actress for “Batwoman” will be a new character entirely, rather than a recast of Ruby Rose, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
Rose is leaving the popular DC Comics series after just one season.
While further details about the character have not been released, the new character is named “Ryan Wilder,” which was first reported by Decider (via a leaked casting breakdown on Reddit). The individual added that actresses have been self-taping auditions since last week.
“She’s likable, messy, a little goofy and untamed,” the casting notice read. “She’s also nothing like Kate Kane, the woman who wore the batsuit before her. With no one in her life to keep her on track, Ryan spent years as a drug-runner, dodging the Gcpd and masking her pain with bad habits. A girl who would...

According to a new report, Zack Snyder has won the battle for his original Justice League cut – known as the Snyder Cut – with Warner Bros. finally relenting and agreeing to release his version of the 2017 movie.
After the whirlwind of chaos that was Batman V Superman‘s premiere, Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman partially redeemed the Dceu, leading fans to believe that WB has corrected course and Snyder is going to stick the landing this time with Justice League. Alas, the tragic death of his daughter Autumn caused the director to give up his duties to Joss Whedon, who went on to make drastic changes to the script and reshoot many scenes. The blockbuster ultimately turned out to be as mediocre as BvS and Suicide Squad, costing Warner Bros. at least $60 million by underperforming at the box office. Still, fans have campaigned for years to see Snyder’s original cut of Justice League,...

Amber Heard has seen her reputation take a major hit during her high profile legal battle with ex-husband Johnny Depp, thanks to a series of explosive and highly-publicized revelations emerging in recent months. Of course, Depp lost the biggest gig of his career when he was reportedly dropped from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise due to all the negative press, but with the tides starting to turn in his favor, it’s now being reported that he could be reinstated in the role of Captain Jack Sparrow.
Of course, Heard is also the star of a billion dollar franchise, thanks to her part in the Dceu, but now, with all these allegations leaking out that paint her as a pretty terrible person, fans are demanding that she be fired from her role as Mera. Aquaman 2 isn’t expected to start shooting for a while yet, so the studio...
