Songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul marveled at Steve Martin’s ability to perform their rapid-fire song in Season 3 of Only Murders in the Building. Martin’s character, Charles-Haden Savage, struggles with “Which of the Pickwick Triplets Did It” until episode 8 of the season. Unlike Savage, though, Martin nailed it in a tight two-hour time window.
“He’s an incredible musician so it sort of tracks,” Paul said during a conversation at Deadline’s Sound & Screen Television live-music event, where Pasek and Paul performed the patter song from the hit Hulu series’ fictional musical Death Rattle Dazzle.
Even though they wrote “Pickwick Triplets,” the pair acknowledge the difficulty.
“It is pretty difficult to sing a patter song,” Pasek said. “We have tried to do it and failed many times.”
Martin’s challenge was exacerbated by a time crunch. Production ran late, leaving only two hours for Martin’s performance on...

Galeca: The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics unveiled nominations for their 2nd annual Dorian Theater Awards on Monday, March 13. Galeca’s 39-member theater wing decided this season’s crop of nominees, which honor the best of Broadway and Off-Broadway.
The nominations list is dominated by the current revival of “Merrily We Roll Along” and new play “Stereophonic.” Both productions netted six nominations a piece. In the case of “Merrily,” that tally includes bids for its Tony-nominated trio of stars: Jonathan Groff, Lindsay Mendez, and Daniel Radcliffe. “Stereophonic” managed one better with four members of its cast nominated in the same featured performance category: Will Brill, Eli Gelb, Tom Pecinka, and Sarah Pidgeon. The individual acting races at the Dorian Awards are gender neutral.
The Best Broadway Musical category features Tony Award nominees “Hell’s Kitchen,” “Illinoise,” “The Outsiders,” and “Suffs,” along with the closed David Byrne tuner “Here Lies Love” and soon-to-be closing “Lempicka.

When the 77th Tony Awards nominations are announced this morning, those honored with recognition will have been selected by a small group of theatre professionals who commit to seeing each and every eligible production that opened during the 2023-2024 season. They are thus able to make informed decisions on what shows, performers and creatives should earn the spotlight of New York theatre’s top honor.
This past season, 60 theatre professionals saw all 36 eligible musicals, play, and revivals and will select the nominees in 26 competitive categories.
Below, see a complete list of the 2023-2024 Tony Awards nominating committee members, including their professions plus past Tony nominations and wins. Some of these nominators may have to recuse themselves prior to voting if they have a conflict, such as if a production that they worked is eligible for a nomination this year.

Nominations for the 39th Annual Lucille Lortel Awards were announced today by Amber Iman and George Abud, two stars of Broadway’s “Lempicka.” The Lortels honor outstanding achievement in Off-Broadway theater. The 2024 ceremony will take place on Sunday, May 5 at NYU Skirball Center. The Lucille Lortel Awards are produced by the Off-Broadway League and Lucille Lortel Theatre, with additional support provided by Tdf.
It’s common for productions to begin their life Off-Broadway before transferring to the Main Stem, so many of this year’s Tony Awards hopefuls are among the list of Lortel nominations. Chief among these contenders is “Hell’s Kitchen,” the semi-autobiographical musical from Alicia Keys. That tuner garnered five Lortel nominations. These include Best Musical, Best Choreography for Camille A. Brown, a Lead Performer bid for Maleah Joi Moon, and Featured Performer bids for Shoshana Bean and Kecia Lewis. All performance categories at the Lortel Awards are gender neutral.

Purple Rain, Prince’s smash 1984 music-packed film, is being developed for the stage by a Broadway producer, with a book by two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist Branden Jacobs-Jenkins and direction by Tony nominee Lileana Blain-Cruz.
Jacobs-Jenkins’ Appropriate is currently a hit on Broadway and an all-but-certain shoo-in for multiple Tony nominations this year. Blain-Cruz was Tony-nominated for her direction of the Lincoln Center Theater’s 2022 production of Thornton Wilder’s The Skin of Our Teeth.
The stage adaptation will feature music and lyrics from Prince’s Purple Rain movie and album.
The project was announced today by Broadway producer Orin Wolf. Additional production details and timing will be announced in the coming months.
Although Wolf’s announcement did not specifically mention Broadway, instead simply saying the project is being developed for the stage, Broadway almost certainly must be on minds given the high-profiles and previous credits of the individuals involved, not...

A handful of hours before George C. Wolfe’s Rustin would make its New York premiere as NewFest’s opening night selection on Oct. 12, more than 100 Black queer members of the Native Son collective gathered in The Chelsea Hotel’s Lobby Bar, drinks in hand and under a golden aura of light, dipping in and out of excited conversation.
“It’s really emotional for me,” Native Son founder Emil Wilbekin told The Hollywood Reporter. “Coming into this room and seeing all these beautiful Black queer men — who are legends, icons, mentors, new in their careers — you can feel the joy and love because we don’t have spaces like this.”
Coordinated in conjunction with Netflix, the Rustin film team and Native Son — a collective of Black gay and queer men focused on elevating the voices, visibility and lived experiences of their community — the gathering counted Rustin producer Bruce Cohen and...

As the Hulu comedy’s triumphant third season drew to a close this week, the Emmy-winning “Only Murders in the Building” on Wednesday released videos of Meryl Streep and Paul Rudd performing the tune “For the Sake of a Child” and Martin Short performing “Creatures of the Night” from the show’s in-world musical “Death Rattle Dazzle.” Watch the former tune above and the latter below.
“For the Sake of a Child” was written by the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright, composer and lyricist Michael R. Jackson (“A Strange Loop”) and Oscar, Grammy, Tony and Olivier Award-winning songwriter-producers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who also wrote “Creatures of the Night.”

In season three of Only Murders in the Building, Broadway director Oliver Putnam, played by Martin Short, lands on the idea of turning his murder mystery play Death Rattle into a musical after the shocking death of his leading man.
The musical, in which a detective investigates the murder of a woman in a lighthouse that was only witnessed by her infant triplets, is meant to salvage the show, and his career. But it also acts as a motif for the rest of season, wherein the Broadway numbers performed by cast further the plot of the actual murder mystery being solved by Short, Selena Gomez and Steve Martin, the trio at the center of the series.
And so to make the already over-the-top musical feel as real as possible, the Only Murders in the Building writing team called on the Tony- and Oscar-winning songwriting duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul,...

“Only Murders in the Building” leveraged the full talents of Meryl Streep in Season 3, including her singing abilities. Episode 3 closed out with a powerful ballad, titled “Look for the Light,” performed by Streep and Ashley Park that was written for the show by Benj Pasek, Justin Paul and Sara Bareilles.
Showrunner John Hoffman told TheWrap that Streep immediately fell in love with the song when she first heard it over Zoom.
“I’ll never forget playing her Sara Bareilles singing that song, with Justin Paul and Benj Pasek having just composed it,” Hoffman recalled. “My favorite moment was she was listening, and Sara’s just weaving this beautiful melody and the lyrics together and then she hits this line ‘My love is a lighthouse. So darling, my darling, look for the light.’ I watch Meryl just go ‘Oh’ and she left the screen and I thought ‘Ok, we’re in a good place here.

Ranking as one of my favorite genre movies of this century is writer/director Mitchell Lichtenstein’s 2007 vagina dentata horror comedy Teeth (watch it Here), which I find makes for a good double feature pairing with another one of my favorites, the 2000 werewolf coming-of-age movie Ginger Snaps. Teeth doesn’t seem to get referenced very often – so I was glad to hear (via Deadline) that it’s getting a bit of a revival. A Strange Loop playwright Michael R. Jackson has written a musical stage play adaptation of Teeth, and it’s expected to make its Off Broadway debut in February 2024!
Jackson wrote the Teeth stage play book with Anna K. Jacobs, with Jacobs providing the music and Jackson writing the lyrics.
Lichtenstein’s film had the following set-up: Dawn (Jess Weixler) is an active member of her high-school chastity club but when she meets Tobey (Hale Appleman), nature takes its course,...

The Tony Awards has added new members to its nominating committee, including Ain’t No Mo star and playwright Jordan E. Cooper and Kpop composer Helen Park, who have both been outspoken about the need for change within the industry.
Other new members joining for the 2023-2024 Broadway season include The Greatest Showman and Dear Evan Hansen songwriter Benj Pasek, actor Bob Balaban, actor and playwright Adam Chanler-Berat, interdisciplinary artist Ty Defoe and director Miranda Haymon.
The Tony Awards nominating committee is typically younger and more diverse than the larger Tony Awards voting body. I’m a Virgo is a triumph of imagination and ideology.
A boomerang throwback to Amazon’s early streaming years when poignant oddballs like Transparent and Patriot dominated Jeff Bezos’ slate, the Boots Riley-created series that launches Friday on Prime Video is a revitalizing return to originality both for the platform and the franchise-heavy small screen itself.
Watch it, with both eyes open.
With dead-end basketball and branding deals, societal toxicity, fast food and a faster-moving love interest played in breakout fashion by Olivia Washington, the heart of the poetic show is 13-foot-tall Cootie, portrayed in towering fashion by Jharrel Jerome. Leading the 19-year-old Oakland native’s unsure steps to the outside world after years of being hidden, the When They See Us Emmy winner ups his already considerable game to unfurl a naturalism that grounds the magical realism all around him.
Too late for this year’s Emmys, regardless...

Plot: A darkly-comedic fantastical coming-of-age joyride about Cootie, a 13-foot-tall young Black man in Oakland, CA. Having grown up hidden away, passing time on a diet of comic books and TV shows, he escapes to experience the beauty and contradictions of the real world. He forms friendships, finds love, navigates awkward situations, and encounters his idol, the real life superhero named The Hero. I’m A Virgo is a mythical odyssey that questions the purpose of the mythical odyssey.
Review: Boots Riley’s feature film directional debut, Sorry To Bother You, was a festival darling when it premiered in 2018. It has taken Riley half a decade to bring his sophomore effort to the screen. I’m A Virgo is a seven-episode series premiering on Prime Video, which has given Riley three times as much space to tell an epic and surreal story that is part fairy tale, part parable, and utterly unique.

Eccentric billionaires, especially ones who broadly promote their heroism, are not supposed to be our heroes. That’s one of the key takeaways from Boots Riley’s new dark comedy I’m a Virgo, a seven-episode red-hot poker in the eye of the corporate establishment, produced for Jeff Bezos’ Amazon platform.
I’m a Virgo has no lack of additional takeaways, mind you. Few contemporary storytellers can rival Riley when it comes to being playfully dogmatic, and I’m a Virgo wraps its anti-capitalist message in a very thin casing that’s part superhero drama and part allegorical satire. Even if the show often gives the impression that Riley has a surplus of big ideas and a deficit of narrative through which to present them, the half-hour episodes amount to a singular vision of contemporary economic inequality and race that’s sure to provoke a variety of responses — including irritation from viewers...

Mitchell Lichtenstein's 2007 horror film "Teeth" has a notable premise. A young woman named Dawn (Jess Weixler) has just joined a Christian abstinence group and has elected to leave sex out of her life until she is able to be married. At about the same time, however, Dawn finds that she has a series of razor-sharp teeth in her vagina. This development terrifies her, but she also finds that it can fight back against the multiple men who attempt to assault her throughout the film. Several men will not exit the film wholly intact. "Teeth" is an excellent coming-of-age drama that confronts backward notions of sexual purity, angrily addresses the constant objectification of adolescent women, and is a wonderfully wicked tale of feminist vengeance. It was one of the best films of 2007.

Here’s something we didn’t have on our horror bingo card this week: a stage musical adaptation for 2007’s cult horror comedy Teeth is in the works.
Deadline reports that Michael R. Jackson, the Pulitzer and Tony award-winning playwright of A Strange Loop, is working on an adaptation set for an Off Broadway debut next year.
The musical was announced as part of Playwrights Horizons’ 2023-24 season. Teeth, the musical, will feature lyrics by Jackson, music by Anna K. Jacobs and a book co-written by both. Previews are slated to begin in February 2024.
Here’s Playwright Horizons’ official synopsis for Teeth: “Dawn O’Keefe is an evangelical Christian teen with a powerful secret not even she understands – when men violate her, her body bites back. Literally. From Pulitzer Prize and Tony-winner Michael R. Jackson (A Strange Loop) and Anna K. Jacobs (Pop!), Teeth, based on the cult classic film of the same name,...

Michael R. Jackson, the Pulitzer- and Tony-winning playwright of A Strange Loop, is sinking his choppers into a stage musical adaptation of the 2007 cult horror-comedy film Teeth, set for an Off Broadway debut next year.
The musical, announced today as part of Playwrights Horizons’ 2023-24 season, will feature lyrics by Jackson, music by Anna K. Jacobs and a book co-written by both. Previews will begin in February 2024.
The 2007 film is a very dark horror-comedy concerning “vagina dentata,” written and directed by Mitchell Lichtenstein. As described by Playwrights Horizons, the musical, like the film, will follow Dawn O’Keefe, “an evangelical Christian teen with a powerful secret not even she understands – when men violate her, her body bites back. Literally.”
“In Teeth, the tethered yet battling forces of sexuality and religion push each other towards wild theatricality, and Jackson’s and Jacobs’s sharp tale of revenge and transformation tears through a...

As much fun as it was to see music's biggest names get honored at the 2023 Grammy Awards on Feb. 5, it was also a highlight to cheer for all the artists who picked up their very first wins this year.
The 2023 freshman class was packed with rising talent who are just getting started on their music careers, but they're not all lesser-known names. One of the biggest Grammys categories is, of course, best new artist, where the Recording Academy recognizes the brightest up-and-coming stars. This year, Anitta, Omar Apollo, Domi & Jd Beck, Samara Joy, Latto, Maneskin, Muni Long, Tobe Nwigwe, Molly Tuttle, and Wet Leg were all nominated, but Joy took home the award (and delivered a gracious acceptance speech for the honor).
Other Grammy categories had a high number of first-timers, too. The best rock album category, for instance, featured the first career Grammy nominations for Machine Gun Kelly (who...

Tyler Perry is the latest Hollywood star to step in and buy out a performance of the Broadway show Ain’t No Mo in the hopes of helping the play reverse its plans to close.
Perry joins Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, who also bought out one of the performances, as the production mounts a campaign to extend its run past Dec. 18. Perry has an equity stake in BET+ and many shows on BET, which is a co-producer on Ain’t No Mo. A rep for Perry confirmed the buyout. Payment has been completed; the exact date and how tickets will be distributed is still being determined.
Creator Jordan E. Cooper, who also stars in the show, has been trying to boost ticket sales this week after the new play, which asks the question, “What if the U.S. government attempted to solve...

As A Strange Loop nears the end of its Broadway run, creator Michael R. Jackson said he’s not sure whether Tyler Perry, a name repeatedly brought up in the musical, will ever come see it.
The mogul is pilloried throughout the show, as the main character, Usher, first rejects an assignment to ghostwrite a gospel play for Perry and then blows up the concept by creating caricatures of Perry characters in a family drama, complete with a gospel chorus singing “AIDS is God’s punishment.” Jackson said he’s spoken on the phone with Perry and maintains a “cute, little relationship” with him, but is not sure he’ll want to come see that.
“I told him, ‘If it’s gonna stress you out, don’t come,’” Jackson told the audience at a talkback held after the show Tuesday and hosted by Trevor Noah.

A Strange Loop, the 2022 Tony Award winner for best musical, will close on Broadway on Jan. 15.
The musical, which also took home the 2020 Pulitzer Prize for drama, will end its run after opening on April 26, 2022 and will end up playing 314 performances on Broadway. While it garnered much critical acclaim, the musical, written by Michael R. Jackson, was up against a tough economic environment, in which tourism numbers are still down, and it had the added challenge of attracting audiences to unconventional subject matter for Broadway.
The musical is a meta narrative following a young musical theater writer as he attempts to write a musical. Throughout his writing process, he’s plagued by his own thoughts, fears and dreams (which are brought to life by the ensemble) surrounding his identity as a Black, queer man and aspiring artist.

A Strange Loop, the Tony Award-winning Best Musical Broadway musical, will plays its final performance on January 15, 2023, producers announced today.
Michael R. Jackson’s acclaimed musical – it won both the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and Best Musical Tony -opened April 26 at the Lyceum Theatre to rave reviews reviews, but has seen steadily declining box office and attendance in recent months. For the week ending Oct. 4, the production filled only 79 of available seats, grossing 579,354, compared to a high point of 860,496 last June.
“Bringing A Strange Loop to Broadway has been extraordinary,” said producer Barbara Whitman. “Michael R. Jackson is one of the most important voices of this generation, and we’re thrilled that so many enthusiastic audience members have been able to experience his monumental musical. We look forward to having more theatre lovers come see the show in its final weeks.”

The Tony Awards provided a boost for several shows, including best musical winner A Strange Loop.
The musical, which tells the story of a Black, gay man, who is writing a musical about himself, performed as part of the June 12 telecast and also saw creator Michael R. Jackson takes home the prize for best book of a musical. In turn, the production saw its highest gross yet last week, bringing in 845,313 and playing to 99.9 percent capacity, also its highest since performances started in April.
Mj, which was up against A Strange Loop, took home four Tonys, including for Myles Frost, who plays the title role and performed during the ceremony. It too had its highest grossing week since opening in December, bringing in 1.7 million.

Though it’s too soon to say how Sunday’s Tony Awards will impact box office for the night’s winners and losers, figures for the week leading up to the ceremony show big gains for the multi-nominated (and eventual Best Musical winner) A Strange Loop. The Michael R. Jackson musical filled 98 of its available seats during the week ending June 12, a large gain over the previous week’s 89.
With an average ticket price of 108, A Strange Loop grossed 676,316 for seven performances.
Overall, Broadway box office for the 31 production was up about 7 over the previous week, tallying 31,588,947. Total attendance was up 4 to 240,564.
Bucking the upward trend was Funny Girl, down by 61,332 to 1,116,695 with the Covid absence of star Beanie Feldstein. Attendance of 8,379 was about 86 of capacity, a noticeable dip from the 95 + level typical of the show.

Photo: The 2022 Tony Awards The Recap This year’s Tony Awards featured an excellent selection of shows, with many of the categories being a toss-up right up until the winner was announced. Myles Frost and Deirdre O’Connell, in particular, earned pleasantly surprising wins. O’Connell herself acknowledged the unconventionality of Dana H. in her acceptance speech, saying “Please let me standing here be a little sign to you from the universe to make the weird art.” Speaking of unconventionality, Michael R. Jackson’s A Strange Loop won Best Musical to a standing ovation. Jackson’s hyper-meta, uncompromising take on being a black, queer writer took audiences by storm, and Jackson himself showed up in a hot pink, cape-length overcoat to match the hype. GLAAD, the leading LGBTQ media watchdog group, praised Broadway and last night’s Tony Awards for telling “stories about the lives of LGBTQ people…”
“With A Strange Loop, Michael R. Jackson puts Black, queer stories center stage and GLAAD was beyond proud to be an investor to help bring this incredible and groundbreaking production to Broadway,” the organization said in a statement released this morning. “A Strange Loop, Company, and Take Me Out showcase the outstanding work of multiple LGBTQ artists and tell important stories about the lives of LGBTQ people with depth, nuance, and humanity. These productions winning top honors at this year’s Tony Awards is a key reminder that our stories matter and deserve recognition. As a record number of anti-lgbtq bills sweep the nation today, creating and awarding authentic and deeply affecting stories is more crucial than ever before.”

I have always been a fervent believer that the Tony Awards will have the best acceptance speeches you’ll see every year and the 75th installment of the awards gala did not disappoint. After a weird two years since we last had what would be considered a “normal” ceremony, the Tonys were back in full force from Radio City Music Hall, on CBS and hosted by newly minted Academy Award winner Ariana DeBose. This year’s speeches reflected diversity, representation, love and family and the seven that we’ve selected below for the best of the night covered those bases in ways that were powerful, touching and funny. Do you agree with our picks? Let us know in the comments below.

After A Strange Loop capped the Tony Awards by taking the Best Musical prize, playwright Michael R. Jackson offered his main takeaway from the show’s unlikely path to the top: “It’s Ok to be weird.”
Appearing in the press room with the show’s producer, Barbara Whitman, Jackson said he intended to take several steps to “try to widen the lane even more the kinds of shows that can be seen by audiences.” He wrote the book, music and lyrics for A Strange Loop, which captured the Pulitzer Prize for drama last year. Its metafictional plot centers on Usher, a Black queer writer who is working on a musical about a Black queer writer writing a musical about a Black queer writer. It hardly was a sure bet for the show to go from Off-Broadway to the pinnacle of the theater world.

Toby Marlow, the Six: The Musical co-creator, was among the night’s historic winners during the 2022 Tony Awards held Sunday night at Radio City Music Hall.
Marlow took this win during the Tony Awards’ first-hour special, Act One, marking a significant moment for inclusion and diversity on Broadway by becoming the first openly nonbinary composer-lyricist in the show’s history to win for best original score.
In the Tonys press room, he celebrated LGBTQ representation on Broadway’s stages during the 2021-2022 season. “It just feels really amazing to be part of a season where there’s so much queerness on stage explicitly,” Marlow said, while noting that with more queer people coming to Broadway, it will be reflected more. “Representation is pretty fab.”

“A Strange Loop” won the much-coveted Tony Award for Best Musical at the 2022 Tony Awards on Sunday, June 12. The tuner from Michael R. Jackson claimed a total of two Tonys at the ceremony. In addition to its strong showing at Radio City Music Hall, “A Strange Loop” is now just the 7th Pulitzer Prize for Drama winner to also win the Tony for Best Musical.
The drama prize at the Pulitzers was first handed out back in 1918, but the voters of that American institution tend to prefer plays rather than song and dance. In 104 years of this award, only 10 musicals have been awarded the Pulitzer: “Of Thee I Sing” (1932), “South Pacific” (1950), “Fiorello!” (1960), “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” (1962), “A Chorus Line” (1976), “Sunday in the Park With George” (1985), “Rent” (1996), “Next to Normal” (2010), “Hamilton” (2016), and “A Strange Loop” (2020). Jennifer Hudson has achieved the rarified status of Egot with her Tony win for producing “A Strange Loop.”
The awards gauntlet lingo of “Egot” refers to individuals who have won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony over the course of their careers in entertainment. Notable figures who have netted wins across all four awards bodies include Rita Moreno, Alan Menken, Andrew Lloyd Webber, John Legend, Mike Nichols, Mel Brooks and Whoopi Goldberg.
Only 16 individuals in history had achieved an Egot in competitive categories ahead of tonight’s Tony Awards. Now, Hudson is the 17th.

A Strange Loop was named Best Musical of the 2021-22 Broadway season, and in two of the bigger surprises of the night, Joaquina Kalukango of Paradise Square and newcomer Myles Frost of Mj took best acting honors.
In the first big surprise of the night, Kalukango won the Best Actress in a Musical Tony Award for her performance in Paradise Square, edging out frontrunner Caroline, Or Change star Sharon D Clarke. Frost, who portrays the adult Michael Jackson in Mj, was less of a surprise, though A Strange Loop‘s Jaquel Spivey was generally favored to take the prize.

The 75th Tony Awards was held on Sunday, June 12 in a two-part telecast staged at Radio City Music Hall. Nominations were announced on May 9, 2022. Of the 34 eligible productions from the 2021-2022 Broadway season, 29 reaped bids across 26 competitive categories.
All 13 eligible musicals and musical revivals earned at least one nomination. The Pulitzer Prize-winning musical “A Strange Loop” leads with 11 nominations, including Best Musical and for three of its cast members. Two other new musicals — “Mj The Musical” and “Paradise Square” — are right behind with 10 bids apiece. This weekend’s release of “Jurassic World: Dominion” is another reminder that Hollywood is not in the business of nurturing talent so much as jamming it into preexisting machinery. The film is a failure on many levels, but it’s also a reminder that director Colin Trevorrow was a genuine Sundance breakout 10 years ago with “Safety Not Guaranteed.” He scored this franchise as a result, but it did not exactly sustain that first feature’s ingenuity.
Filmmakers are not the only ones who feel the pinch of Hollywood’s gears. With the Tony Awards on Sunday, it’s worth looking at how the film and TV industries can benefit from investing in playwrights, and avoid the pratfalls of absorbing their talent instead of giving it room to grow. The entertainment industry needs originality to survive, and the theater community has a talent pool that’s a de facto pipeline, so...

The Best Original Score prize is always one of the most coveted prizes at the Tony Awards. This year, the race is also one of the most competitive, pitting Michael R. Jackson’s music and lyrics for “A Strange Loop” against Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss’ work for “Six: The Musical.” In recent weeks, “A Strange Loop” has pulled ahead of “Six” in our combined odds as the clear frontrunner for Best Musical, so does that mean it has an edge in the contest for score as well? How often do the two awards go hand in hand?
Watch our exclusive video interview with Tony nominee L Morgan Lee (‘A Strange Loop’)
Although it might seem intuitive that the show crowned Best Musical would also take the prize for Best Score, recent history shows how the awards often diverge. Since 2000, only 13 prize-winning shows have also won for their score, which...

The curtain will soon rise on the 75th annual Tony Awards, so naturally Gold Derby has taken its cue to reassemble its Broadway prognosticators to break down what shows will win big on June 12. Susan Haskins-Doloff joins Sam Eckmann and me to discuss all 15 musical categories, where new works “A Strange Loop,” “Mj the Musical,” and “Paradise Square” lead with double-digit nominations; the new, reimagined production of the groundbreaking 1970 musical “Company” leads the revivals with nine total bids. Watch the full video slugfest above.
Right from the start, all three of us agree that “A Strange Loop” will take home the top honor of the night with the prize for Best Musical. Even though this category boasts a very strong list of original works, Susan notes that “Loop” stands out as “by far the most powerful work of art,” Sam calls its composer and librettist Michael R. Jackson “one of...

“It fulfilled my queer artist soul,” claims John-Andrew Morrison of getting to perform in “A Strange Loop” on Broadway. The actor admits that he didn’t believe the show would find commercial life because of the candid perspective with which creator Michael R. Jackson tells the story. Morrison assumed producers would say “he’s too Black, he’s too queer, he’s too honest.” But critics swooned over the production and it earned a whopping 11 nominations at this year’s Tony Awards, including a Featured Actor in a Musical bid for Morrison. “It feels like the greatest encouragement,” gushes the newly minted nominee. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
In the musical, Morrison plays one of five “Thoughts” floating around Usher’s (Jaquel Spivey) head. Each Thought embodies an assortment of concepts and people in Usher’s life, and Morrison makes quite the impact when he slips on the guise...

Winners of the 88th Annual Drama League Awards were announced on Friday, May 20 2022 at a ceremony hosted by Emmy Award-winning journalist Frank Dilella at the Ziegfeld Ballroom. The Drama League Awards honor both Broadway and Off-Broadway productions from the 2021-2022 theater season.
Tony Awards frontrunners mostly dominated the production categories. Best Musical went to “A Strange Loop,” Best Play went to “The Lehman Trilogy,” and Best Revival of a Musical was handed to “Company.” The Second Stage Theater production of “Take Me Out” prevailed in the hotly competitive Best Revival of a Play category.
The winners of the Drama League’s inaugural categories for direction of a musical and play went to Marianne Elliott (“Company”) and Kate Whoriskey (“Clyde’s”), respectively. Elliott sits far out front in the corresponding Tony race, though Whoriskey’s triumph comes as a surprise. This frequent collaborator of Lynn Nottage failed to earn a Tony nomination,...
