Exclusive: Netflix and Aggregate prevailed in a bidding war to secure rights to writer David Gauvey Herbert’s 2021 Esquire magazine article “Daddy Ball.” They will find a new title, but the source material will be developed as an eight-episode limited series that Ozark‘s Jason Bateman will both star in and direct. Bateman, Michael Costigan and Roxie Rodriguez will be co-executive producers for Aggregate. David Herbert and David Klawans will also EP the dark comedy limited series.
There were eight offers on the table, but Netflix won it in an outright buy for an undisclosed number commensurate with the demand. It will be developed on a fast track.
The article starts the way most dad-on-dad youth-sports rivalries do. But on the Long Island Inferno, two fathers, both with complicated pasts, took it all too far. There were claims of stalking, corrupt cops and mob connections. Neither man was ever the same.

UTA has signed three Nft artists and the Nft collection MV3, co-created by Stranger Things writer Jessie Nickson-Lopez, as part of the agency’s continued push into representation for clients and projects in the Web3 space.
Joining the agency’s roster of Web3 clients are the visual artists Emonee Larussa, who was selected as one of three artists to create NFTs for the Grammys; Vinnie Hager, who released the Nft collection Letters last year; and Andrew Wang, the founder of the Web3 art studio Devotion.
The agency will also represent the MV3 Nft collection from the Metav3rse, a digital publication that provides readers updates on Nft news across various social media platforms. The collection — co-created by Nickson-Lopez, Roberto Nickson and Torey Kohara — features different characters from the fictional world of Eluna City and sold out after its initial public launch.

When Elise Henderson joined MRC as President of Television in April 2019, the company had one series on the air, Netflix’s Ozark, was about to start production on HBO limited series The Outsider and had just finished a pilot for Hulu’s The Great.
Two years — and a pandemic — later, MRC Television has eight series, the most the indie studio has had at the same time: Ozark, The Great as well as the upcoming The Terminal List at Amazon Prime Video, starring Chris Pratt; The Shrink Next Door (limited series), headlined by Will Ferrell and Paul Rudd, Shining Girls, starring Elisabeth Moss, and Hello Tomorrow!, headlined by Billy Crudup, all at Apple TV+; as well as Rian Johnson’s Poker Face, starring Natasha Lyonne; and Ted, a prequel to the 2012 movie, with Seth MacFarlane, at Peacock. Additionally, I hear Taika Waititi’s Time Bandits is nearing a series order at...

Elle Fanning, star and executive producer of Civic Center Media/MRC Television’s Hulu series The Great, is expanding her relationship with the indie studio partnership. She and her sister Dakota Fanning have teamed to launch Lewellen Pictures production company and have entered a first-look television deal with the studio, a joint venture between UTA and MRC. The Fanning sisters plan to develop feature film and television projects, as well as other forms of media, including podcasts.
Their first project under the pact is an adaptation of Megan Miranda’s bestselling novel The Last House Guest, which is being developed as a crime thriller series. Sarah Walker will write and executive produce the series. It centers on an intimate friendship between two girls who fall violently in love with each other’s differences, which, in the end, create doubt, betrayal and tragedy. The Fannings will...

Exclusive: Fear The Walking Dead co-creator Dave Erickson has closed an overall deal with MRC Television. Under the multi-year pact, Erickson will exclusively work with the indie studio on the creation and development of television series on which he will serve as writer-showrunner or supervise other writers.
As part of the deal, Erickson is developing The Jaunt, based on the 1981 Stephen King short story originally published in The Twilight Zone Magazine. The Jaunt explores a future where teleportation, called ‘jaunting,’ has become a commonplace, if still dangerous and mysterious, technology.
“We’ve long admired Dave’s visionary creative work and are thrilled to welcome him to MRC,” said Elise Henderson, President of MRC Television. “A true master of his craft, he’s the ideal partner to build upon the work of Stephen King, and create and develop more originals as the studio continues to expand.”

The Outsider Episode 6
For a detective like Ralph Anderson, evidence is everything. As he says in the episode, if something doesn't seem to have a logical reason behind it, it's because he hasn't found that logical reason yet. His world view, by the nature of his job and by his nature as a person, has to operate in such a way. To Ralph, there is always a reasonable explanation for a criminal act, no matter how inexplicable or heinous. What Holly asks of him, Alec, Jack, Glory, and everyone else in the episode is something that Ralph simply isn't equipped to handle, no matter how much Holly's time line of events seems to be as solid as anyone's could be given the theory she's expressing.

The Twitter account Stranger Writers is managed by the people who are in the writer’s room for the mega-popular Netflix series Stranger Things. The main writers and creators of the series are the Duffer Brothers, Matt and Ross Duffer, as well as co-writers Jessie Nickson-Lopez, Paul Dichter, and Kate Trefry. The crew must know by now how much of a fanbase has built around the series, so they are giving us something to talk about while we await the fourth season that’s still a ways off.
In a recent tweet, the writers implemented something for fans to look forward to called Video Store Fridays! Here’s what they said about it:
Introducing: Video Store Fridays!

Winners of the 2018 Writers Guild of America Awards were revealed on Feb. 11 in ceremonies held simultaneously in Los Angeles and New York. As only screenplays written under the guild’s guidelines or those of several international partners are eligible for consideration, these kudos, which are celebrating their 70th anniversary, have not been the most reliable barometer of the Oscars.
Indeed, one of this year’s leading contenders for Best Original Screenplay at the Oscars — Martin McDonagh for “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” — was ruled out of the running by the guild. However, that WGA race does include four of the other Academy Awards nominees — “The Big Sick,” “Get Out,” “Lady Bird” and “The Shape of Water.” It is rounded out by “I, Tonya.” Jordan Peele won for “Get Out” edging out Greta Gerwig, who had been predicted to win for “Lady Bird.”

The 2018 Writers Guild of America Awards take place on Feb. 11 with simultaneous ceremonies held in both New York and Los Angeles. Only scripts written under the guild’s guidelines or those of several international partners are allowed to vie for these awards. As such, these kudos are not the most reliable barometer of the Oscars.
In the past nine years only 59 of the WGA nominees have numbered among the 90 screenplays that reaped Academy Awards bids. Indeed, 2014’s Oscar winner for Best Original Screenplay, “Birdman,” was deemed ineligible. Likewise for one of this year’s leading contenders for that award: “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.”
On the television side, the leading nominees are “Better Call Saul,” which competes for best drama series writing as well as for two individual episodes and “The Americans,” which is up for both overall drama series writing and an individual episode. Over in comedy, reigning Emmy...

New Line Cinema has a Pulse.
The company has picked up the unique superhero-crime project that sees producers Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen of 21 Laps reteaming with their Stranger Things writer Jessie Nickson-Lopez.
Nickson-Lopez developed a pitch that adapts Pulse, an upcoming novel by Michael Harvey. She will now write the script.
Pulse is a grounded take on the superhero origin and coming-of-age story that bridges crime with science fiction. The story follows a teenager investigating the murder of his older brother alongside the police. During this period, and with the help of a mysterious mentor, the young man...
