When Katie Crutchfield finished making Tigers Blood, her sixth album as Waxahatchee, she was struck by a strange, new sensation: It was done, and it was good.
“In the past, I’ve anxiously listened to my records before they come out a lot, searching for mistakes — and then of course finding them because I’m searching for them,” she says with a laugh. This time, she adds, “Every word is in the correct place. Every melody is just right. There’s no question marks. There’s no need to obsess over every little detail.

When Intuit Dome — the new Inglewood home of the Los Angeles Clippers that billionaire owner Steve Ballmer has spent upward of $2 billion constructing — opens in August, it will unveil not only a state-of-the-art sports and concert venue, but also a high-end VIP club.
The Lexus Courtside Lounge — available to those with courtside seats — is being designed by London-based interior designer Rita Konig, who was also behind the look of the Hollywood-loved private members’ club San Vicente Bungalows. The sidelines at the University of Colorado football games have resembled Grammy and Oscar week in L.A. since Deion Sanders, aka “Coach Prime,” took over as head football coach this season. A-listers from Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson to Lil Wayne, Rick Ross and Kawhi Leonard have shown up to see the Buffaloes run the field, and the star power is poised to continue as the team takes on UCLA at the already sold-out Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena on Saturday.

It’s Michael Imperioli with the steal, as the NBA has enlisted the actor from The Sopranos to hype the league’s first in-season tournament, which begins Nov. 3.
The in-season tournament – borrowed from similar ones in European soccer – is intended to create excitement in the least-exciting part of the regular season. Winning team players will get $500,000 apiece as incentive, which means they may play defense. The teams will wear different uniforms and have different floors to play on.
The initial marketing, released Wednesday, is a nearly 2-minute spot that borrows its theme from the Ocean’s 11 caper film. It features Imperioli narrating how seven players — Anthony Davis, Trae Young, DeMar DeRozan, Julius Randle, Kawhi Leonard, Darius Garland and Draymond Green — plot to steal the NBA Cup.
“We’ve launched what we believe is a comprehensive and engaging program to promote this new tournament,” NBA commissioner Adam Silver said Wednesday. “We...

New York, Dec 22 (Ians) The 2020-21 NBA season will begin with a blockbuster opening-night doubleheader with the Golden State Warriors visiting the Brooklyn Nets and defending champions Los Angeles Lakers taking on the intracity rival LA Clippers.
The opening night on Tuesday will see NBA MVPs Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant and LeBron James and two-time NBA Finals Mvp Kawhi Leonard in action. It will also mark the return of Curry, Durant and Kyrie Irving as the trio look primed to put on a spectacle on Day 1.
Durant's first game in 18 months (excluding the preseason) -- and first as a Net -- comes against the team with whom he won two NBA championships and two NBA Finals Mvp awards.
"Every drill that I've done, I've been going as hard as I could. I've been in the league for 14 years. Even if I didn't have an Achilles', I probably wouldn't be 100 per cent.

Prentice Penny wants to see life imitate art — imitating life — in joining the effort to inspire people to buy from Black-owned businesses this holiday shopping season.
The showrunner and executive producer of “Insecure,” the HBO comedy created by and starring Issa Rae, is among the guests on Friday’s finale of Facebook’s “#BuyBlack Friday,” a series aimed at turning the annual post-Thanksgiving shopping event into a call for consumers to support Black-owned businesses throughout the entire holiday season.
Penny noted that at the end of “Insecure” Season 4, Rae’s character started her own small business as a “cultural curator,” supporting local entrepreneurs, and the next season will build on the exploration of her new undertaking.
“She’s like an event planner, promoting the businesses, not too dissimilar from what this is,” Penny told Variety. About Facebook’s “#BuyBlack Friday” show, he said, “It just felt like a natural connection for me,...

President Trump attacked the NBA last week, saying the league is in “big trouble” and blaming its supposedly poor ratings on the players kneeling during the national anthem to protest police brutality and racial inequality.
“It’s been horrible for basketball. Look at the basketball ratings. People are angry about it,” Trump said during an interview on Clay Travis’ radio show. “They have enough politics with guys like me. They don’t need more. There was a nastiness about the NBA and the way it was done. The NBA is in trouble. Big trouble.”
However, making a concrete assessment of the NBA ratings since re-start, or finding one single reason for their decline, is far from simple.
According to Nielsen numbers, NBA viewership (P2+) was down around 13% versus last season before the shutdown (prior to March 12). The first week of games since the re-start were down 4% from the NBA’s pre-corona average,...

The NBA returned on Thursday night to bumper TV ratings for TNT.
A thrilling showdown between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Los Angeles Clippers drew 3.4 million total viewers, more than doubling the network’s average viewership for a regular season telecast. To put that number into perspective, that represents the eighth most-watched game of the NBA season so far and the least-watched of the Lakers and Clippers’ four match ups in the 2019/20 season to date. However, it is also worth mentioning that the opening night game was exclusive to TNT, whereas the audience for Thursday night’s encounter was diluted slightly by the fact it aired on multiple affiliate networks across the country.
The two L.A. teams’ Christmas game drew a whopping 9 million total viewers for ABC and ESPN. Last night’s game was TNT’s second most watched of the season, behind the first Lakers-Clippers game of the season from Oct.

Turner Sports said its coverage of Sunday’s NBA All-Star Game, simulcast live on TNT and TBS from Chicago’s United Center, drew an average of 7.3 million viewers, an 8% increase over last year’s game. That made it the night’s most-watched program on all of cable TV.
The annual midseason showcase, capping a full weekend of festivities including the well-watched All-Star Saturday Night, featured several tributes to Kobe Bryant, the Lakers icon who with his daughter Gianna and seven others were killed last month in a helicopter crash. The nods to Bryant were highlighted by Jennifer Hudson signing “For All We Know” just before the game tipped off at 8:30 Pm Et/5:30 Pm Pt.
Hudson, who is from the Windy City, was introduced by Magic Johnson, who told attendees he wanted everyone to “come together” to honor Bryant and former NBA commissioner David Stern, who died on New Year’s Day.

It may have taken until the All-Star break, but the NBA finally has some good ratings news. Sunday’s All-Star Game, which featured a radical new format, scored for Turner with 7.3 million viewers, an 8% increase from last year.
That 7.3 million is across both TNT and TBS, which simulcast the game. Last year’s game was simulcast across both networks as well.
The game, which was won 157-155 by Team LeBron over Team Giannis, peaked in the fourth quarter, which ran commercial-free, with 8 million viewers. The NBA is coming off of a first half of the season that saw ratings dip by double-digits across the board.

The NBA’s TV ratings so far this season have been far from all-star level.
Viewership across ESPN, TNT and NBA TV is down 15% year-to-year overall, according to Nielsen figures. TNT’s coverage is averaging 1.3 million viewers through 14 telecasts, down 21% versus last year’s comparable coverage, while on ESPN the picture isn’t much prettier. The Disney-owned network is down 19%, averaging 1.5 million viewers versus just under 1.9 million viewers at the same stage last year.
But why have the numbers been stuffed? And do the NBA, TNT and ESPN have cause to be deflated by the drop? According to sources at all three organizations, injuries have played the biggest part.
So far this season, 63% of games on ESPN and TNT (or 22 games out of 35) were missing one or more stars missing due to injury. Eleven of the 14 games broadcast on TNT have had one or more stars missing due to injury,...

There’s lots of NBA buzz in Los Angeles this year, with both the Lakers and the Clippers adding star players during the off-season and expected to contend. So the teams’ opening-night matchup was a strong local draw Tuesday night..
Despite going against the end of a tight World Series Game 1, the second game of the net’s Opening Night NBA doubleheader averaged 3.6 million viewers — up 32% from last year’s comparable game window — and drew a 9.7 rating in the L.A. market. That marks the WarnerMedia outlet’s best regular-season number in Los Angeles in six years.
The home-team Clippers beat the LeBron James-led Lakers, 112-102, at Staples Center. It was the first matchup of new additions Kawhi Leonard of the Clippers and Anthony Davis of the Lakers.
Despite it being a Clippers home game, new Clippers addition Kawhi Leonard was heavily booed by the crowd of Lakers fans attending.

Basketball superstars arguably gave Hollywood a lesson in dealmaking prowess these past two weeks, “freaking out the sports elite into shelling out $3 billion,” in the words of the Wall Street Journal. In doing so they’ve also raised this question: Will Hollywood’s superstars be far behind?
What the NBA players did was to form furtive alliances with fellow stars, then, as free agents, hammer out multimillion-dollar trades with other teams. Kawhi Leonard, for example, didn’t wait for an Endeavor agent to negotiate a deal structure; the “talent” dictated the terms as he signed with the Los Angeles Clippers.
Intriguingly, the UTA talent agency this week signed a deal with Rich Paul, who reps LeBron James among other NBA stars, to lead a new sports division.

The ESPYs’ television broadcast only paints so much of the picture of what went down at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles from sports’ biggest award ceremony. Viewers at home saw Tracy Morgan host, celebrities like Sandra Bullock present and athletes including Drew Brees, Alex Morgan and Giannis Antetokounmpo receive awards, but they didn’t quite catch all the exciting moments left off TV. Here’s what they missed:
“Fresh Prince” Dwyane Wade: During a commercial break karaoke challenge, Wade showed his skills on the mic as he rapped along to “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” theme song. The retired basketball superstar laid down the rhymes from the comfort of his own seat, next to his wife, Gabrielle Union. “In West Philadelphia born and raised…” Wade rapped, filling in the remainder of the song with perfect memory as the lyrics cut out.

Last week’s L.A. earthquakes? Jimmy Kimmel didn’t feel a thing. He’s also not feeling the Richter Scale, nor is he all that impressed by your sloshing-pool videos.
On Monday, ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live” returned from a two-week vacation with much to talk about. Still at the top of everyone’s minds, of course, were last week’s 6.4 and 7.1 magnitude earthquakes, which both had epicenters in Ridgecrest, California.
“We had not one, but two major earthquakes here in Southern California,” Kimmel began Monday night’s monologue. “One of which was so strong that Kawhi Leonard somehow wound up on the Clippers.”
So did Paul George — some earth-shaking stuff, indeed.

“This Richter Scale makes no sense,” Kimmel went on. “Why not just do it on a scale of 1 to 100? If it’s 1, it’s nothing, if it’s 100, you’re dead.

Kawhi Leonard is coming home, and he’s bringing fellow hometown star Paul George with him.
ESPN is reporting that the Los Angeles Clippers have come to an agreement with Leonard, the Mvp of the 2019 NBA finals, to sign a four-year, $141 million contract. The contract ends his one-year run with the Toronto Raptors, a moment that resulted in the first Canadian NBA champions.
The surprise in the deal is the trade for Oklahoma City Thunder forward Paul George, also an La native. The Clippers made the blockbuster trade to prevent Leonard teaming up with LeBron James and Anthony Davis on the Lakers, creating a super team for the ages. Now, they will share a building at Staples Center, but war against each other in different uniforms.
To get George, the Clippers will send four future unprotected first-round picks, one protected first-round pick, and two pick swaps to the Thunder to get George.

The Los Angeles Lakers and New Orleans Pelicans have reportedly agreed to a deal that would see the Lakers get top five player Anthony Davis to team with LeBron James.
In return, the Lakers will send Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram, Josh Hart and three first-round draft picks, including this year’s No. 4 selection in next week’s draft, to New Orleans.
The Lakers have been pursuing Davis for some time, and obtaining him is a major coup for the franchise. It’s also significant that they kept rising forward Kyle Kuzma out of the deal, leaving them with a stalwart outside shooter that may thrive even more in the inside-outside game the Lakers can now deploy.
New Orleans was asking a steep price for Davis, who can become a free agent after this season, but was said to covet Los Angeles. They can now team the Lakers players with anticipated No.

The Raptors were led by guard Fred VanVleet, who came up big in the fourth quarter with 12 points. The North had balanced scoring, with four players scoring 20 or more points. Andre Inguodala led the Warriors with 22 points.
