When we first meet Nino Sarratore in the HBO adaptation of “My Brilliant Friend,” based on the Neapolitan Novels by Elena Ferrante, he’s a young child at a wake for the dead husband of his father, Donato Sarratore’s (Emanuele Valenti) mistress, Melina (Pina Di Gennaro). While it’s clearly not the first time that our narrator, Elena Greco, has met the slightly older Nino, what’s important is that six-year-old Elena is already secretly in love with him. Later, when teenage Elena (Margherita Mazzucco) sees Nino (Francesco Serpico) at high school with his perfectly floppy hair, glasses on his adorable face while smoking a cigarette, she drops a sandwich on the ground at first glance. Her lust for him is palpable. How many of us haven’t felt that feeling for someone we would later learn is a nightmare?

In 1974, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre laid the groundwork for the slasher genre as we know it today. This subset of horror films introduced the world to fledgling actors who would grow into well-known talents, like Jamie Lee Curtis and Jennifer Aniston. Over the years, many incarnations of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre have done the same: We’ve seen Viggo Mortensen, Renée Zellweger and Matthew McConaughey square off against several variations of Leatherface. This year, the TCM franchise is once again taking on a new form — and it’s filled with fresh faces that will likely haunt a whole new generation of viewers. Here’s exactly who Leatherface will be hunting down in the 2022 version of Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

The complex relationship between Elena Greco and Lila Cerullo lies at the heart of My Brilliant Friend. We first met them as clever children navigating poverty and oppression in 1950s Naples. Now adults in the turbulent 1970s, their bond endures despite separate paths.
Elena pursues writing, traveling between Italy and France. But marriage troubles and an affair with Nino strain ties with family. Lila finds success but battles gangsters in her old neighborhood.
Their friendship surprises with turns, as do lives entwined with history. Lila encourages Elena’s ambitions, though envying her escape. Elena admires Lila’s fire, borrowing some rebelliousness.
In Season 4, old dangers materialize amid political turmoil. Elena faces disintegrating dreams with Nino while reconnecting with daughters and the past. Lila confronts roots she can’t quit, seeking empowerment through challenging the powerful.
The series excels at depicting lives shaped by location and era and their affection transcending rivalry.

Presented by Paramount Scares, Friday the 13th Week sees Bloody Disgusting heading to Camp Crystal Lake for a series of features that celebrate the Voorhees family and their influence. Yesterday, Luiz H.C. took inventory of all the horror movie fans in horror similar to franchise hero Tommy Jarvis. Today, Jenn Adams celebrates the franchise’s final girls.
As long as there have been slashers, there’ve been final girls; the lone–traditionally female–survivor at the end of the film. Fans of the lovably formulaic sub-genre have strong opinions about which character originated the trope. From Lila and Jess to Sally and Laurie, we each have our favorites and will defend them tooth and nail.
Most slasher franchises become known for specific final girls who appear alongside iconic villains in multiple films, but Friday the 13th is the rare exception that proves the rule. Known for killing off heroines early in subsequent films,...

We’re accustomed to trilogies saving their biggest and best for the final installment (to varying effect), but if you’re expecting Dune 3 to be an action-packed finale to the Dune trilogy, you might be disappointed. While speaking on Vanity Fair’s Little Gold Men podcast, director Denis Villeneuve made sure to note that he doesn’t view Dune 3 as the completion of a trilogy.
“First, it’s important that people understand that for me, it was really a diptych,” Villeneuve said. “It was really a pair of movies that will be the adaptation of the first book. That’s done and that’s finished. If I do a third one, which is in the writing process, it’s not like a trilogy. It’s strange to say that, but if I go back there, it’s to do something that feels different and has its own identity.“

One Shot invites close readings of the basic unit of film grammar.Beach Rats.In the sanctuary of a church, Frankie (Harris Dickinson) watches his younger sister, Carla, shares a few words about their late father. “If my dad were here with us today,” Carla says, her voice adolescent and bright amid the grief of her father's funeral, “he’d want everyone to be happy.” Happiness: what does happiness mean to Frankie, whose eyes always appear alert but startled, feigning haughtiness, belying fear? Here, the camera is a gentle companion, nestling in to peer over Frankie’s shoulder, moving with his hand as he reaches for a laminated prayer card of Saint Sebastian from the church pew. Frankie contemplates the card, his thumb moving over Sebastian, who peers up to a hopeless sun as he bleeds out, body shot full of arrows. With our eyes on his hands, we wonder what Frankie is thinking about,...

After meeting as children in 1950s Naples, their story goes on to cover over 60 years, exploring the mystery of Lila – Elena’s brilliant best friend and, in a way, her worst enemy. The fourth installment of the saga, titled “Story of the Lost Child,” delves into the adult lives of Elena and Lila. They find themselves entangled in the turmoil of Italy in the late 1980s, nearing the end of decades of political violence and social unrest. Amid motherhood and career demands, amid betrayals, threats, disappearances, and natural disasters, Elena and Lila once again reside in the same neighborhood.

The fourth and final season of HBO’s sumptuous 20th-century saga “My Brilliant Friend” brings us back to Naples one more time. HBO has released the trailer for the last 10 episodes of the series, based on Elena Ferrante’s worldwide-bestselling quartet of Neapolitan novels, with Season 4 adapting the last book, “The Story of the Lost Child.” Watch below.
The series is created by Saverio Costanzo, who hands directing duties over to “Sworn Virgin” and “Daughter of Mine” filmmaker Laura Bispuri. Costanzo’s partner and Bispuri’s longtime collaborator Alba Rohrwarcher joins onscreen as protagonist Elena Greco after narrating behind the camera the last three seasons. Irene Maiorino joins the cast as Elena’s complicated longtime friend Lila, whom she first met as a girl in 1950s Naples. This season brings us back to the namesake Italian city — which the production recreated on a vast soundstage when not filming on location — where Elena,...

The fourth and final season of The Umbrella Academy landed on Netflix the other week, and while we generally enjoyed it, a great many fans had issues. (Beware Spoilers below.)
One of the big issues fans had was that the relationship between Diego (David Castañeda) and Lila (Ritu Arya) petered out; between seasons, their marriage became stale and passionless, and we catch up with them around the time Lila and Diego's brother Number 5 (Aidan Gallagher) have an affair. Even Castañeda was ticked about it when he first read the scripts. "I was pissed off,” the actor said earlier this month. “I was angry. I talked to [showrunner] Steve [Blackman] a few times. I was like, ‘Hey, does this really have to happen?’”
But some time has given him perspective, as has the wave of online criticism directed against the show. In a more recent interview on the I’ve Never Said...

I was thinking about ways to talk about Fear of the End without my heartbreak over saying goodbye to Evil hogging the mic. And strangely enough, how Evil wrapped up its carnival of oddities spanning Hell, Heaven, and Earth is kind of what helped me come to a conclusion. This is as much a celebration as it is an unfair goodbye. Sort of how Sheryl’s funeral went, no? That’s the thing about Evil that speaks to us the most I guess. This stubborn, practically deranged hope in the face of insurmountable trouble. And that’s what Evil leaves our beloved Kristen, Ben, and David with too.

Director Fede Alvarez’s contribution to the Alien franchise, Alien: Romulus (you can read our review Here), is currently in theatres – and this isn’t the first time he has added to a popular genre franchise. Not only did he make his feature directorial debut with the 2013 version of Evil Dead, but two years ago he teamed with Legendary Pictures and the Netflix streaming service to bring us a Texas Chainsaw Massacre film, which he produced and crafted the story for alongside his frequent collaborator Rodo Sayagues. Now Legendary is working with the Six Flags theme park company to bring an experience inspired by that Texas Chainsaw Massacre film to Six Flags Great Adventure and Six Flags Over Texas – and we’ve gotten our hands on a batch of images that offer a preview of the experience! [This story contains major spoilers for The Umbrella Academy‘s fourth and final season.]
Though The Umbrella Academy‘s finale left many fans in turmoil earlier this month, show star David Castañeda isn’t worried. In fact, he thinks the backlash is a good thing.
In the final season of Netflix’s quirky superhero drama, fans saw the relationship between Castañeda’s Diego Hargreeves and Ritu Arya’s Lila fade into a morose, passionless marriage that eventually led to romance between Lila and Diego’s brother, Number Five, played by Aidan Gallagher. Many online commenters called the plot point unnecessary and complained that its development felt rushed in comparison to the years-long buildup of Diego and Lila.
“I really love that they are always taking chances,” Castañeda says, addressing the pushback, in an exclusive preview obtained by The Hollywood Reporter of Tuesday’s episode of the I’ve Never Said This Before With Tommy Didario podcast.

This article contains spoilers for The Umbrella Academy season 4.
For the past four seasons, The Umbrella Academy has repeatedly put its main characters through the same cycle: Uncover personal and family trauma, save the world, rinse and repeat. There was hope that the final season of the show might finally see the Hargreeves siblings find the happy ending they so desperately craved and deserved. But as much as the cheery demeanor of the series’ final sequence wants you to believe that this is the happiest ending these messy, complicated misfits could have hoped for, in reality, it’s a slap in the face to all that these characters have endured.
From their immaculate Marigold conception to their subsequent adoption and training by Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore), the Umbrella Academy has collectively been through an immense amount of trauma. When we first see them as adults in season 1, it’s clear...

Through four seasons of Netflix’s superhero series The Umbrella Academy, members of the dysfunctional Hargreeves crime-fighting family have lost and regained their powers multiple times. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg of the weirdness Luther, Diego, Allison, and company endure.
Amid all the bickering, time-traveling and universe-hopping, it can be easy to forget that The Umbrella Academy even had superpowers in the first place! Thankfully early seasons of the show and the comic source material from Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá provide a helpful reminder of what the Hargreeves are capable of.
What follows is a breakdown of every member of The Umbrella Academy’s (and Lila’s) power. The availability of those powers vary from season-to-season and sometimes they unlock a new dimension of said powers, but the fundamentals remain the same throughout.

Can you believe that The Umbrella Academy has come to an end after four seasons. Netflix gave this series a chance to wrap up its storylines, and it did not disappoint.
Admittedly, the fourth season was a little rushed with only six episodes to it. However, the ending brought growth, emotion, and closure for many individuals in the series.
It’s now time to rank the seasons from worst to best. Could the first season be beaten? Did the fourth season end the series on a high? Here is my ranking of all four seasons.

The fourth and final season of Netflix's offbeat superhero dramady The Umbrella Academy is available to watch now, and while we found some things to like about the show's swan song, fan reception has been dismal. To give you an idea of what I mean, for the first three seasons, the lowest rating for an episode on IMDb is 6.9, with many getting respectable scores in the 8+ range. In the fourth season, the ratings drop and finally crater with a score of 5.1 for the series finale.
Fans have taken aim at plot holes, sloppy writing, and one particular subplot where the character of Five (Aidan Gallagher) starts up a relationship with Lila (Ritu Arya), who happens to be married to Five's brother Diego (David Castañeda). "So I finished watching the last season of The Umbrella Academy and to say I'm disappointed is an understatement," said one fan on Reddit before...

Be it the unique combination of different genres, likable oddball characters engaging in silly antics, incredible meme-making potential, or important social and psychological issues the series often addressed, Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy was a hot favorite binge-worthy series among netizens. With steadily strong reception throughout the first three seasons, it was expected that the fourth and final season would end with a proper send-off to the beloved characters, bringing much-deserving closure to their arcs in the process. However, in reality, the fourth season has turned out to be hastily put together without a head or tail. Right from a storyline that makes little to no sense to the atrocious treatment of the characters and an unsatisfactory conclusion to the overarching story, every major and minor aspect came together to make the final season the worst one to date. So much so that fans are willing to deny its existence altogether.

Steeped in sibling rivalry, they reunite against mounting threats too bizarre even for this strange world. From murderous mannequins to alternate timelines, each mission spirals further into madness.

One of The Umbrella Academy Season 3's many cliffhangers was Sloane's sudden disappearance after the reset. Fans and Luther alike wondered what happened to her during the wait for Season 4 of the Netflix series.
At the end of Season 3, Allison hits a button meant to reset the universe in a last-ditch effort to stop the end of the world. While it did save the world from destruction, it also brought the Hargreeves (and Lila) into an entirely new timeline and stripped them of their superpowers.
The last two members of the Sparrow Academy standing at the end of the season — Sloane and the alternate-universe version of Ben — were with the others when Allison hit the reset button. However, only one (Ben) appeared with the others in the new timeline, much to the distress of Luther, who had found his soulmate and wife in Sloane.

Note: There are spoilers for “The Umbrella Academy” Season 4 below.
“The Umbrella Academy” just signed off with its fourth and final season, and the Netflix series brought it all to an end with a happy reunion — of sorts. The series ends with a singular, happier timeline created thanks to the Hargreeves siblings’ sacrifice – and it’s full of familiar faces.
After the siblings realize that the marigold giving them their powers is also what’s causing the world to end repeatedly, they agree to let The Cleanse erase them from ever existing. This results in one unified, seemingly much better timeline.
The show ends with a pan around a park where we see a number of familiar faces from the series’ run; all living much better, safer lives. Showrunner Steve Blackman told TheWrap it was a lot of phone calls, but he ended up getting almost everyone he wanted for the scene.

Thematically, Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy had found the perfect final resolution with its third season, when the eponymous team had decided to sit out the world ending crisis, just to take an introspective look at their lives and spend the final days mending their broken hearts. However, with the creation of yet another reality, the team had to return for the final dance-off in the fourth season—and even though this time the ending could have been better executed, it managed to strike an emotional chord with viewers nevertheless. To save not only their world but the timeline itself, the Hargreeves siblings face a cataclysm of epic proportions, and the bittersweet end of their journey comes with a supreme act of self-sacrifice.
