Paul Schrader would like a word, please. In a new interview with French publication Le Monde, the screenwriter — who has worked with Martin Scorsese on iconic films Raging Bull and Taxi Driver — shared his dissatisfaction with Leonardo DiCaprio playing “the idiot” Ernest Burkhart instead of the FBI agent in Killers of the Flower Moon.
“I would have preferred Leonardo DiCaprio to play the role of the cop in Killers of the Flower Moon rather than the role of the idiot,” he said. “Spending three-and-a-half hours in the company of an idiot is a long time.

Killers of the Flower Moon: Paul Schrader says DiCaprio should have played the cop and not the idiot
Paul Schrader, the writer behind Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and Bringing Out the Dead, has something he’d like to get off his chest about Scorsese’s latest film, Killers of the Flower Moon. Speaking with France’s Le Monde, Schrader says he would have approached the lengthy epic differently, especially regarding casting. While Schrader thinks Killers of the Flower Moon is a “good movie,” he thinks Leonardo DiCaprio should have played the FBI agent investigating the Osage murders. This part eventually went to Jesse Plemons.
“Marty compares me to a Flemish miniaturist. He would be more the type who paints Renaissance frescoes,” Schrader said. “Give him $200 million, a good film will inevitably come out of it. That said, I would have preferred Leonardo DiCaprio to play the role of the cop in ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ rather than the role of the idiot. Spending three-and-a-half...

Paul Schrader is back to sharing his brash opinions on today’s movies, this time taking aim at his “Taxi Driver” collaborator Martin Scorsese’s latest film, “Killers of the Flower Moon.”
In a recent interview with Le Monde, The screenwriter and director criticized the casting of Scorsese’s film, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone and Robert De Niro.
Schrader shared that he would have “preferred Leonardo DiCaprio to play the role of the cop in ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ rather than the role of the idiot.”
“Spending three-and-a-half hours in the company of an idiot is a long time,” he added.
DiCaprio was, in fact, initially cast to play FBI agent Tom White (ultimately played by Jesse Plemons), though it remained unclear if Schrader was privy to that casting tidbit. Early “Killers of the Flower Moon” scripts centered on his efforts to investigate the string of Osage...

Casting director Ellen Lewis and head of Indigenous casting Rene Haynes came to Killers of the Flower Moon from very different backgrounds. The former had worked with Martin Scorsese for many years, beginning with Goodfellas. The latter had been at the forefront of casting Indigenous actors in everything from the Twilight series to the HBO film Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, which earned her an Emmy nom. When Killers came around, says Lewis, “I contacted Rene immediately because I had met her on [the Netflix series] Godless and knew that I was going to want her with me on this journey.”
Haynes was first hired to cast extras for War Party (1988). Production brought her to the Seven Reservations of Montana, where she says she “developed this strong attachment to [the Indigenous] community.” Soon thereafter was Dances With Wolves (1990), which she says “heralded a realization that Native characters should be played by Native actors.

Lately, the Best Supporting Actor Oscar lineup has been seeing double — as in two nominees from one film. That looks likely to continue this season, and if that happens, it’ll mark an unprecedented five-year streak of double bids in the category.
Oscar nuts know this double-dipping wasn’t so rampant until very recently. There was a 26-year drought between 1991’s “Bugsy” yielding noms for Harvey Keitel and Ben Kingsley and 2017’s “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” ending the dry spell with bids for Woody Harrelson and Sam Rockwell. There were no co-star nominees the next year, but since then, it’s been duo after duo.
2019’s “The Irishman” earned comeback nominations for Al Pacino and Joe Pesci. The subsequent year, Oscar voters threw a curveball by nominating both Daniel Kaluuya and Lakeith Stanfield — aka the people who played the title characters of “Judas and the Black Messiah” — in supporting.

Filmmaker Martin Scorsese says that actor DiCaprio changes in life when he’s changing on film, singing praises of the ‘Titanic’ star’s range, calling him a very dynamic and versatile performer. Talking to ‘Entertainment Tonight’, Martin Scorsese admitted that he loves working with Leonardo DiCaprio, and even praised the ‘Shutter Island’ star’s growth as an actor during the New York City premiere of his latest film, ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ that features DiCaprio.
‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ has all the makings of a classic Western combined with elements of an investigative mystery and some level of horror. DiCaprio will essay the role of Tom White, an incorruptible Texas Ranger-turned FBI agent sent to Oklahoma in the early 1920s by J Edgar Hoover to answer a desperate call from the Osage Indian Nation.

Martin Scorsese’s highly anticipated Killers of the Flower Moon, which released its first trailer this week, just had its world premiere at Cannes. Easily the most anticipated movie of the festival, all eyes were on the post-screening reactions, and folks were curious to know if the film stands alongside the eighty-year-old auteur’s best movies. Indeed, judging by the rapturous response (which included a nine-minute standing ovation), it’s safe to say that Killers of the Flower Moon is going to rank with some of Marty’s finest work. So far, the Rotten Tomatoes score is 96%, with only one of the 27 reviews being negative.

Jim Gray, former Principal Chief of the Osage Nation, has some high praise for Martin Scorsese's "Killers of the Flower Moon" after taking in a private screening of the film ahead of its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival this weekend.
Scorsese's 3.5-hour true-crime drama, per the official Apple TV+ synopsis, "is set in 1920s Oklahoma and depicts the serial murder of members of the oil-wealthy Osage Nation, a string of brutal crimes that came to be known as the Reign of Terror." The first teaser trailer for "Killers of the Flower Moon" sees Leonardo DiCaprio's narrator flipping through a book about Osage culture and history, as he explains in voiceover how the "Children of the Middle Waters," as the tribe is known, "took their name from Missouri and Osage Rivers."

“Taking risk at this age, what else can I do?” Martin Scorsese said Sunday at the Cannes press conference for Killers of the Flower Moon, which had its world premiere last night here.
The director appeared with stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, Lily Gladstone and the leader of the Osage Nation, Chief Standing Bear, to talk about how they aimed to bring attention to the atrocities that occurred in the oil-rich Osage nation in the early 1920s, which was in the vicinity of the Black Wall Street massacre.
De Niro drew a parallel to what occurred with the Osage nation to the recent George Floyd tragedy, which took place during the Donald Trump presidential administration. The Oscar winner has often blasted Trump.

Martin Scorsese may like to think of “Killers of the Flower Moon” as the Western that he always wanted to make, but this frequently spectacular American epic about the genocidal conspiracy that was visited upon the Osage Nation during the 1920s is more potent and self-possessed when it sticks a finger in one of the other genres that bubble up to the surface over the course of its three-and-a-half-hour runtime.
The first and most obvious of those is a gangster drama in the grand tradition of the director’s previous work. Just when it seemed like “The Irishman” might’ve been Scorsese’s final word on his signature genre, they’ve pulled him back in for another movie full of brutal killings, bitter voiceovers, and biting conclusions about the corruptive spirit of American capitalism. “Gimme Shelter” may not have made it into the final cut, but the chugging bass groove...

Director Martin Scorsese has made some truly brilliant art out of the dark corners of human history, from "Gangs of New York" to "Silence," but "Killers of the Flower Moon" looks like it might be his historical magnum opus. The film, which debuts at Cannes this week and will hit theaters nationwide in October, is based on the non-fiction book "Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI" by David Grann, and it tells the story of the murders of dozens of indigenous people in Osage County, Oklahoma in the 1910s, '20s, and '30s.
The actual number of murders is still unconfirmed, because there was a cover-up and some murders might have been reported as "accidental" deaths, but "Killers of the Flower Moon" focuses on the murders of the family members of Mollie Burkhart (played by Lily Gladstone). When Mollie and her...

The long-awaited trailer for the latest Martin Scorsese project, "Killers of the Flower Moon," is finally here. The Apple film about a very dark part of America's history is based on the 2017 book by David Grann: "Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI." Famed director Martin Scorsese has many stories he wants to share, but feels like it may be too late, he said in a recent interview with Deadline.
“I wish I could take a break for eight weeks and make a film at the same time,” Scorsese, 80, said while discussing his narrative process for his upcoming movie Killers of the Flower Moon. “The whole world has opened up to me, but it’s too late. It’s too late.”
Part of this reflection was sparked by ruminating on the moment filmmaker Akira Kurosawa received his honorary Oscar from George Lucas and Steven Spielberg in 1990.
“I’m old. I read stuff. I see things. I want to tell stories, and there’s no more time,” Scorsese explained. “[Kurosawa] said, ‘I’m only now beginning to see the possibility of what cinema could be, and it’s too late.’ He was 83. At the time,...

“This is a big screen movie, and that’s what we made,” said Scorsese of the film. “I could only have made this picture with collaborators who are remarkable and who are totally dedicated to bring this story to like on an epic scale. I needed actors brave enough to play complicated characters.”
From Apple Original FIlms and Paramount, the Western crime drama stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone and Robert De Niro. In a defining moment for Apple’s foray into theatrical, the movie will receive an exclusive release in cinemas around the globe before opening in select theaters on Oct. 6. It will expand nationwide on Oct.

A new “trailer” for Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon has gone viral.
The director’s next film, an adaptation of David Grann’s best-selling book of the same name, was first announced in 2018.
Shortly after filming began in 2021, a still was released by Apple TV Plus depicting Leonardo DiCaprio and Lily Gladstone as Ernest Burkhart and his wife Mollie, respectively.
To date, this image is the only one to have been released despite the fact the film will premiere at Cannes in May. A theatrical and streaming release will follow in October and November.
Twitter user @KevinGeeksOut shared a fake trailer featuring an extended look at the still as the dramatic score of 2001 film The American Astronaut plays.
“I knew what was going to happen but still I laughed,” one person said of the fake trailer, with another agreeing: “I knew it was coming, but I still laughed.

Martin Scorsese's "Killers of the Flower Moon" finally has a release date. The long-awaited true-crime film is heading to theaters this October before it eventually starts streaming on Apple TV+, and we already know how long it'll be.
"Killers of the Flower Moon" - which boasts a sprawling cast that includes Leonardo DiCaprio, newly minted Oscar-winner Brendan Fraser, Robert De Niro, Lily Gladstone, and Jesse Plemons - is based on the bestselling nonfiction book of the same name written by David Grann. It tells a story set in 1920s Oklahoma when members of the Osage Nation were targeted and murdered by a serial killer, seemingly because of the Nation's ties to oil. The string of crimes became known as the Reign of Terror. Grann's book tells the story of how the modern FBI came out of the investigation into those murders.

Martin Scorsese’s historical crime drama “Killers of the Flower Moon” is one of the most anticipated films of 2023. It’s the great director’s first film since “The Irishman,” and Apple gave him a reported $200 million budget to execute his vision. According to one of its stars, it’s a “masterpiece.”
Speaking to Deadline, the film’s costume designer, Jacqueline West, said that while she hasn’t seen the film yet, Leonardo DiCaprio – who produces the film and stars alongside Robert De Niro and Jesse Plemons – has, and he told her about it at lunch the other day.
“He said, ‘Jackie, I think we worked on a masterpiece,’” West recalled. “I thought for Leo to say that, was something. He doesn’t say that lightly. He has been in the business since he was a little boy.”
She also said that Lily Gladstone – who plays DiCaprio’s character’s Native American wife – is “incredible.

Apple is coming on board to help finance Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” which Paramount will distribute theatrically, an individual with knowledge of the deal told TheWrap. However, another individual told TheWrap that there is no deal in place yet.
Apple will stream the film on its platform following its theatrical release. Paramount acquired the project from Imperative Entertainment last June, but was faced with budget concerns when the price tag jumped to $180 million to $200 million after tax credits. According to Deadline, Scorsese shopped it around to studios like Universal and MGM, and streamers like Apple and Netflix.
This follows another big move for Apple after it recently acquired Tom Hanks’ WWII film “Greyhound.”

As Martin Scorsese toils away in the editing room on The Irishman–his long-gestating crime epic starring Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci, Harvey Keitel, and Bobby Cannavale–ahead of a hopeful release next year, the director shows little signs of slowing down.
His adaptation of Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI, led by Leonardo DiCaprio, is finally confirmed to begin production in the summer with backing from Imperative Entertainment. Based on the book from David Grann, the author behind The Lost City of Z, Eric Roth (Forrest Gump, The Good Shepherd) has penned the script that follows the real-life conspiracy surrounding the murders of people in Oklahoma’s Osage Indian tribe after oil was found on their land.
“When I read David Grann’s book, I immediately started seeing it — the people, the settings, the action — and I knew that...
