With a career spanning several decades, Kevin Costner has established himself as one of the most iconic leading men along with acclaimed filmmakers in Hollywood. While the actor has recently gained recognition as the patriarch of the Dutton family in the Western drama Yellowstone, Costner also has a long-standing association with baseball movies, including the 1989 film Field of Dreams.

However, the actor later revealed that he was not the sole contender chosen to play the midwestern farmer who builds a baseball field in his backyard, as Robin Williams was also considered for the role before the filmmaker changed his mind.

Believe it or not, even the most beloved movies can face initial skepticism from actors. Field of Dreams, a 1989 classic, became more than just a sports movie. It delved into deeper themes like redemption, family, and the importance of pursuing dreams. Despite its universal appeal, Ray Liotta, who played the memorable character “Shoeless” Joe Jackson, wasn’t immediately sold on the story.
Ray Liotta as “Shoeless” Joe Jackson in Field of Dreams
At first, the idea of ghosts playing baseball in a cornfield seemed a bit too far-fetched for him. However, he changed his mind and decided to be part of it, thanks to the great friendships he formed with the cast, especially Kevin Costner.

Jimmy Kimmel hosted the 96th Academy Awards (Oscars), where some of the most successful films of the previous year were honored. He was quick to break into his bag of prepared one-liners, even though he acknowledged the show was running five minutes behind schedule. He proceeded to roast several of the night’s most prominent guests, such as Christopher Nolan, Bradley Cooper, and Robert Downey Jr.
After the drama and controversy of Kimmel’s time hosting this year’s Oscars, fans are seeking a new face to take on the prestigious role next year. And it appears that the ideal candidate is none other than the hilarious and beloved John Mulaney. Why? His Oscar presentation for Best Sound was arguably the most unexpected moment; his performance was well-received by fans.

All dads are not created equal. Some offer unconditional love, some take a firm-but-fair approach, some are rolling stones, some are actual Rolling Stones, and some are The Great Santini. It's a cosmic crap shoot as to which kind of paterfamilias you wind up with, and even an ideal upbringing can morph into a contentious relationship over time. Life, and human beings, are weird that way.
This is why there is no shortage of fiction dealing with dads. We're especially flush with tales centered on the always tricky father-son dynamic. Whole civilizations have come and gone, but dudes have always been hung up for one reason or another on their pops. And over the past 40 years, no actor has been more closely associated with the dramatic exploration of this occasionally fraught kinship than Kevin Costner.

Phil Alden Robinson's "Field of Dreams" was the sleeper hit of spring 1989. Based on W.P. Kinsella's wistful novel "Shoeless Joe," the film connected with audiences of all ages, but Baby Boomers in particular. Kevin Costner's Ray Kinsella, like many former hippies, became estranged from his parents during the late 1960s. All Ray had was his dad, and all they had in common was baseball, but even that became a contentious issue. A young and fiery Ray finally hit his breaking point, said something awful to his dad, and never saw him again.
That awful utterance and subsequent shunning gets rectified in the waning moments of "Field of Dreams," and if you saw the film during its initial theatrical release, you beheld the heartening spectacle of mainstream moviegoers, especially men, hanging out through the credits longer than usual. Kevin Costner has starred in several films about baseball, and they're all remarkably different. Both "Bull Durham" and "For Love of the Game" combine romance with America's National Pastime, yet the former is a funny, flirtatious romp that parallels the mechanics of the sport with the rituals of human courtship. The latter, on the other hand, is an elegiac melodrama about the things we prioritize in life and just how hard it is to bid farewell to the life you used to have upon reaching a crossroads.
Phil Alden Robinson's classic "Field of Dreams" exists somewhere at the nexus of those two films, merging a baseball fable with a poignant story about regret but with a fantasy twist. The film, which adapts W. P. Kinsella's 1982 book "Shoeless Joe," casts Costner as Ray Kinsella, an everyman who, like other Boomers, was once a child of '60s counter-culturalism. He's...

Before 1987, Kevin Costner might've been best known in Hollywood for the movie in which he didn't appear.
Lawrence Kasdan's "The Big Chill" gave just about everyone involved a massive career boost, and probably would've done likewise for Costner had he not been cut out of the film. He played Alex Marshall, the character whose death by suicide brings a group of college friends back together for a fall weekend in South Carolina. Though Kasdan shot flashbacks featuring Costner, he ultimately cut them out of the movie, which became a Baby Boomer favorite.
Costner's bid for movie stardom officially began in 1985, with lead roles in Kevin Reynolds' "Fandango" (another Boomer nostalgia piece) and John Badham's "American Flyers." He also landed a flashy supporting role in Lawrence Kasdan's Western throwback, "Silverado." The first two films not only bombed, they barely received a theatrical release, while Kasdan's movie performed well below the studio's commercial expectations.

Not all dreams are meant to come true.
Peacock’s straight-to-series order of “Field of Dreams” is no longer moving forward.
The 1989 baseball classic starring Kevin Costner was being adapted for the small and streaming screen by writer and executive producer Michael Schur. TheWrap has learned Universal Television is now talking to other interested buyers.
Schur’s “Field of Dreams” series was planned as a loose retelling of the feature film, which starred Costner as Ray Kinsella, a farmer in Iowa who, encouraged by an unknown, ethereal voice, builds a baseball diamond in the middle of his cornfield.

One of the best movies about baseball, fathers and sons, following your dreams and the metaphysical nature of corn, Field of Dreams (1989) touches all the bases.
Based on Canadian author W.P. Kinsella’s novel "Shoeless Joe", the film finds Iowa farmer Ray Kinsella (Kevin Costner) hearing a voice that says, “If you build it, he will come,” which compels him to build a baseball diamond in his cornfield.
He is also compelled to find reclusive writer Terence Mann (James Earl Jones), seek out the ghost of dead baseball player-turned-doctor Archie “Moonlight” Graham (Burt Lancaster) and finally make peace with his deceased dad.
It’s a sentimental film, but in the best way possible, and that’s why Costner wanted to be part of the...

This past weekend, Hollywood celebrated the 7th annual Turner Classic Movie Film Festival, and this year’s slate of films did not disappoint.
Shown over 4 days and in multiple theaters along Hollywood Boulevard, the festival continues to draw bigger and bigger crowds each year.
This year’s festival treated classic film fans to over 70 movies and special guests, including Angela Lansbury, Faye Dunaway, Rita Moreno, Francis Ford Coppola, and Carl Reiner – just to name a few.
With so many films showing, its hard to choose what to see, but Wamg attended a few of the classics, along with some special presentations.
Field Of Dreams (1989)
The story goes that while Kevin Costner was filming Bull Durham (1988) he came across the script for Field of Dreams. Producers weren’t holding out for him because they assumed he wouldn’t want to do 2 “baseball movies” in a row. And thank god they were wrong.

Kevin Costner is back on the big screen this week in action-thriller 3 Days to Kill. It's not a classic Costner film by any stretch (he's essentially playing Liam Neeson in Taken), but the film is arriving right in the middle of a career revival for the actor who headlined big hits two decades ago. With Man of Steel, Draft Day, Jack Ryan and 3 Days all under his belt over the last 12 months, we're experiencing something of a Costnaissance (to swipe a term coined for Matthew McConaughey).
As a screen star Costner was never blessed with dynamic range or the ability to transform himself like a Daniel Day-Lewis can, but what he can deliver is a performance of earnestness and honesty that connects with an audience. He is frequently the glue that holds a film together, a movie star with the everyman appeal of someone like James Stewart. If anything, Costner...

Can you believe Kevin Costner is almost 60 years old?!The actor has definitely aged well -- Costner still looks like the spitting image of Ray Kinsella in "Field of Dreams."Since finding fame with his hit movie "Bull Durham" in 1988, Kevin has gone on to steal the screen in flicks like "Dances With Wolves," "The Bodyguard" and "Waterworld."He also melted women's hearts around the world in the 1999 romance "Message in a Bottle," and thoroughly creeped us out playing a serial killer in 2007's "Mr. Brooks." Costner's been pretty successful in his personal life as well! Kevin has three beautiful children with his ex-wife Cindy Costner and married blonde bombshell Christine Baumgartner 2004. Kevin and Christine have three adorable kiddies together, too. We can't wait to see the actor's latest blockbuster "Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit" where he'll star alongside hottie Chris Pine! How do you think Kevin has aged? Tell toofab in the comment section below,...

Thanksgiving is a specifically and peculiarly American occasion and although we on this side of the pond are generally aware of it, either because of films like Free Birds, or because of a healthy interest in Us sports, or through the avalanche of Thanksgiving-themed tweets from those we follow within the Twittersphere, it tends to pass us by.
But in the interests of North Atlantic harmony and in order to try to extend an olive branch of fraternity and put all that Boston Tea Party business behind us, it seemed appropriate to acknowledge and even celebrate Thanksgiving by sharing a few things for which we can all be thankful – American, British and everything else besides.
We could list all of the films we are thankful for, but that would take a while. We could say we are grateful for certain actors or directors, but in such matters of taste and...

1) Jimmy Muir (When Saturday Comes, 1996)
Football has never really lent itself to the silver screen. Somehow things just don't work – the movement is too forced, the celebrations too cartoonish, the plots too hackneyed, the acting too stilted, the need to get a few real-life players in there (for some reason) too hard to resist. When Saturday Comes is no different. The football scenes don't work, the plot would've been turned down by Boy's Own for being too far-fetched, and Mel Sterland and Tony Currie pop up and make Ally McCoist look like Robert De Niro. The climax should be pretty clear before the opening titles have ended.
If you're expecting an "And yet …" at this point, think again. You can't dress this up as a moment of cinematic brilliance any more...

From Japanese ghost stories such as Ringu (1998) and Ju-on (2002, remade as The Grudge) to modern revisionist ghost stories such as Brad Anderson’s Session 9 (2001) and Ti West’s The Innkeepers (2011), cinematic specters have nearly always been evil, or at the very least, malicious. Scary movies have long held the belief that ghosts should frighten us, and Hollywood had lined their pockets with that notion, but is it possible to make a good movie about “good” ghosts? We think so, and here’s our proof… our Top Ten Movies About Friendly Ghosts.
10. Heart And Souls (1993)
Anything starring Robert Downey, Jr. is worth checking out in my book, but this comedy was surprisingly enjoyable. Downey plays a guy used by four ghosts to reconcile their lives before moving on into the afterlife. The catch is, Downey is less than enthusiastic, but finds himself the catalyst for something bigger than himself and goes along for the ride.

“The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it’s a part of our past, Ray. It reminds us of all that once was good and it could be again.” – Field Of Dreams.
No truer words were ever spoken about America’s Pastime. Baseball began this past Spring with 30 teams vying for the chance to become World Champions and now it’s been decided. The San Francisco Giants and Detroit Tigers will play ball in the 2012 World Series. Before the final hurrah of nine innings, stats, bases and 3 strikes you’re out, Wamg has compiled a list of the Best Baseball Movies. Did we leave any in the dugout or are there some that should be sent to the showers?...

Well surprise surprise. The Dark Knight Rises has topped the charts for two weeks in a row in predictably emphatic fashion.
They say that in life there is no such thing as a sure thing. Well whoever said that would have been laughed out of the room by execs at Warner Bros. Whoever said that had obviously never seen the hype surrounding Christopher Nolan’s follow up to The Dark Knight. Whoever said that hadn’t experienced a film that was always guaranteed to make over $1 billion at the box-office. Well, as long as it wasn’t sick all over the audience or get banned at any rate…
Déjà Vu
“Whoa. Déjà vu” says Neo as he sees the same black cat walk by twice. Trinity turns to him in alarm and makes him affirm his statement. “A déjà vu is usually a glitch in the Matrix. It happens when they change something.

Dads are good guys. They put together our complicated toys, they taught us to drive, and they took us camping. But we've always considered him to be a total dork, or the big bad guy who Mom would call on to deliver the harshest punishments.
We wanted a father who was more like ones in movies. Why didn't we have a dad who built a magical baseball field, was fabulously wealthy, and who greeted crises with jokes, hugs, or lethal force instead of groundings?
We know our dads were cool, always there for us, and making us better people. We love them dearly. But in honor of Father's Day, here are 13 movie dads we still find ourselves admiring for their humor, cuddliness, special talents, and in some cases, bank vaults full of money.
13. Sam Baldwin (Tom Hanks), 'Sleepless in Seattle' (1993)

They can be harmful. They can be helpful. They can be annoying as all get-out. The film world has given us everything in the spectrum of ghost virtue from Bruce Willis to the creepy girl from Ringu. Today, in honor of The Lovely Bones, we salute the good guys, the friendly ghosts who ride high along with Casper in the act of moral solidarity.
