Dynamite Entertainment has been publishing an ongoing Army of Darkness comic book series and we’re going to start featuring it more frequently here on Daily Dead. Similar to the other comics we cover, you can expect an early look at the cover art, previews pages, and interviews for this title.
To get things started, Kristian interviewed Elliott R. Serrano, the writer of the Army of Darkness comic book series, who tells us about writing new adventures for Ash and where the series is headed:
Thanks for taking the time to talk with Daily Dead. Could you tell our readers a bit about yourself and your work in the comic book industry?
Elliott R. Serrano: I’m a writer and columnist for the Chicago Redeye, a sib of the Tribune Company, who specializes in pop-culture and “geek culture.” I write a blog called “Geek To Me” (redeyechicago.com/geektome) where I write about movies,...

Chew is one of the indie title that you hear a lot of good things about but for whatever reason, you keep putting off that initial purchase. Well, thanks to this latest interview with artist Rob Guillory I may finally quit procrastinating and purchase my first issue. Check out what he has to say about how he got started with writer John Layman and where things are with the Showtime adaptation. The artist details how his involvement with the series came about. Guillory: [After detailing his work for manga published Tokyopop] eventually, the Tokyopop thing went south and died. Then a few months later, John Layman started looking for an artist for Chew, which had been rejected numerous times by DC. Turned out that the first guy Layman asked was Brandon Jerwa [who Guillory knew from Tokyopop], who happened to be a good friend of his. And Jerwa referred him...

This week down at your neighborhood newsstand: The secret lives of a giant man; Mercenary living; Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?; Six in the chamber.
3 Story: The Secret Story of the Giant Man–Matt Kindt is one of those very rare comics creators who can change hats without ever compromising his own personal vision. His drawing style is very indie-friendly: very soft, often black-and-white, almost cute. None of the bold Kirby crackles or aggressive McFarlane inks that put off a lot of non-comics types (or so I’ve noticed). Yet Kindt’s stories often touch on familiar subject matter to die-hards: spies, armageddon, and giant men. So it’s not even so much that he changes hats, I guess, as he manages to combine his many interests into one pleasing package after another. This book, a follow-up to 2009′s almost-the-titled 3 Story: The Secret History of the Giant Man,...

Dynamite Entertainment's "Pantha" #1, available June 2012, is written by Brandon Jerwa and illustrated by Pow Rodrix, with covers by Sean Chen and Mark Texiera :
"...she stalks the night, driving the forces of 'Chaos' from the shadows and hunting them down like prey. Much more than a feral shapeshifter, Pantha is also an avatar for the Egyptian goddess 'Sekhmet' - and she's going to learn that history can repeat in a terrifying way..."

Pantha has been announced by Dynamite Entertainment. The ongoing series is a spinoff from the publisher's Vampirella line, to be written by Brandon Jerwa and illustrated by Pow Rodix. Pantha, an immortal cursed by the Egyptian gods, first appeared in Vampirella #30. Her solo title will feature cameo appearances from other characters from the core series. "Like her good friend Vampirella the character of Pantha has many layers," said Jerwa. "My series is an equal mix of horror, suspense, mysticism, Egyptian mythology, and yes, I'll say it - superheroic action. "This is a comic for people (more)...

For the people who have missed out in buying Moonstone Book's "Zombies vs Cheerleaders" because of its irregular release schedule, a trade paperback is available. This volume offers plenty of fan-service and teenage angst. The conflict is eternal and these self-contained tales offer up some hilarity and art from a variety of writers and artists.
Most of the standout tales come from issue #2. "Finality," by writer Brandon Jerwa (Battlestar Galactica, GI Joe) with art by Remy Mokhtar ("Phases of the Moon"), offers a thoughtful romantic tale where the last zombie and cheerleader on Earth have made peace. They have to band together to save mankind. Hopefully Jerwa will continue the tale, but in an anthology series that is barely two years old, only time will tell. "A Piece of Work," by series creator Steven L. Frank gives new meaning to the art of being a zombie, and its a tale that some will chuckle at.

We hold in our hands the covers for DC Comics this February. As a child of four can plainly see, these comics have been hermetically sealed in a Cgc 9.9 slab, and they’ve been kept in a #2 mayonnaise jar under a giant stack of returned copies of Holy Terror since noon today.
What do we have worth noting? The new look of Darkseid, and we’re far enough into the new 52 books that it’s time for Batman to start crossing over in all of them. Plus Mara Jade, the red-haired assassin who fell in love with her blond-haired man she was sent to kill– oh, I’m sorry, that’s from Star Wars. This is Mera in a jade outfit. Our mistake.
Shall we? Surely!
As usual, spoilers may lurk beyond this point.

If you need $100 million to make a CGI-heavy action film, the project-funding website Kickstarter should definitely not be the first place you look. However, Kickstarter is becoming a hot spot to hunt down dollars for more modest indie projects, and comics-related documentary pitches in particular are becoming more and more common.
Five such comics documentaries have met their funding needs, and the dollar amounts they've been able to raise are impressive. Their topics range from historical investigations into censorship to massive interview compilations looking at what current creators grew up reading and what goes on behind the industry's closed doors.
"Stripped: The Comics Documentary"
Status: Funded!
Creators Dave Kellett and Fred Schroeder set out to make a feature-length documentary about where comics come from and where they are headed. With at least 60 interviews from around the industry, it looks like they're already off to a great start.

Recently, Kickstarter has seen many a project. The site has become nearly overcrowded with creative people putting out their truly unique ideas in varying levels of quality and originality. Some are more interesting that others, and when I came across Brandon Jerwa's project about shooting a documentary that focused on the creator's side of the comic book industry, believe me, it caught my interest. It caught my interest so much so that we felt like we would be doing a disservice to him and his fellow creators as well as the Geeks of Doom readership if we didn't try to shine some light on his truly amazing project.

TV shows new and old came up in conversation this morning. "True Blood" and "Curb Your Enthusiasm" generated strong reactions, and comics writers seem to be looking forward to Syfy's "Alphas," which premieres tonight and apparently employs Marc Bernardin on its writing staff (always a good reason to check anything out), according to Neil Kleid.
Gabriel Hardman, meanwhile, critiqued Marvel's old Iron Man animated series—though he was more excited about Stan Lee's backdrop during the show's intro than he was about the in-story action. Find out why in our list of retweets below. It's there alongside some suggestions for revamped movie titles that use "In My Pants" as a secret ingredient.

@gabrielhardman Yeesh, this 90's Iron Man cartoon is bad though. But I did remember right, Stan Lee has a poster I drew in 1994 behind him in the intro.

As he tends to do, Warren Ellis offered up his thoughts on Muammar Gaddafi this morning, and he summed up the Libyan leader's response to protests there better than anyone else in the Twitter Report feed.

Reactions are in following yesterday's announcement that Adrianne Palicki will play Wonder Woman in David E. Kelly's new NBC pilot. Some creators are happy, some are frustrated, and at least one is just rolling his eyes about how little mainstream audiences seem to understand about the character.

So whatever the real story is behind that purported "X-Men: First Class" photo that showed up yesterday, whether it's real or not, it got Twitter talking. Some creators liked it. Other trashed it. And it also led to a provocative revelation from Jeff Parker.

Geeks are gearing up for "The Green Hornet" and info about Verizon iPhone this week, and both showed up on the minds of creators in the Twitter Report feed today. Ben McCool posted a micro-review of the film, while others who haven't been lucky enough to see it yet focused mainly on what they're expecting. Meanwhile, at a desk near a pot of coffee somewhere, R. Stevens is awaiting a mass iPhone exodus from his At&T network.

The lunar eclipse attracted tweets from all over last night and left a few astonishing amateur photos in the feed this morning. It also prompted a diverse array of reactions, however, and you need look no farther than Jimmy Palmiotti and Joe Hill's posts to see where the poles lie.
In other, more serious musical-related news, writer Brian Lynch got seated for the "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark" performance that ended badly last night. Check out some perspective from him and others down below, along with some in-progress artwork from Jim Lee.

Last night's "Walking Dead" season finale on AMC turned out to be mighty divisive in the Twitter Report feed. Rob Liefeld was a big fan, but Brian Keene, DJ Coffman and Brandon Jerwa all had criticisms to discuss, and Christos Gage had a theory to share about the whisper.
You can find out whose side you're on after the jump, where you'll also find a TwitPic link to some celebratory Krampus art from Guy Davis, a "Yogi Bear" movie-related wish and some harsh words for the Green Bay Packers' jerseys yesterday.

Robert Kirkman got a bit sentimental about "The Walking Dead" on Twitter this morning and shared a quick history footnote about himself and artist Tony Moore. Elsewhere in the feed, Jimmy Palmiotti's pulling for AMC's new series to succeed; he's worried about when he'll be able to watch it, though.

Republican Senate candidate Christine O'Donnell surprised some people when she won her primary race in Delaware; Ron Marz was among them. Ed Brubaker also wrestled with the week's news when he learned about plans for M. Night Shyamalan's "Night Chronicles" films.

British comics makers had to wait a few weeks longer than their American counterparts to order iPads from Apple, but Dave Gibbons and Paul Cornell were among the first to jump on the devices when they became available in the U.K. over the weekend. Both sides of the Atlantic, by contrast, got to see "Iron Man 2," and Jimmy Palmiotti and Jhonen Vasquez both encountered some surprises related to the film off-screen.
There were a few scattered disappointments floating around the comics Twitterverse this morning as well, though. Actress Lena Horne's death, the new Meat Loaf album and Dan Slott's discovery that he can no longer get on Mr. Toad's Wild Ride at Disney World were among them. Comic book readers love controversy, and so did creators on Twitter Wednesday night. Tweets showed up all night mourning the death of Twitter user @Hobodarkseid, who was outed in an NPR blog post as being none other than writer Matt Fraction.
Elsewhere, a few creators took issue with claims made my Tyrese Gibson in a CNN article about inventing digital comics for iTunes. Brian Michael Bendis and Christian Beranek both weighed in on that one. On lighter notes, Jon Favreau and Stan Lee are both jazzed about "Iron Man 2," and Stan Lee believes he may outshine Robert Downey Jr.
