Avatar: The Way of Water and Elvis were big winners at the 13th Advanced Imaging Society Lumiere Awards, which celebrated the creative and technical achievements that brought showmanship to entertainment during the year.
“It’s just this great big glorious marriage between the performing arts and the technical arts,” summed up Elvis helmer Baz Luhrmann during the presentation Friday at The Beverly Hills Hotel. Honorees and presenters included The Way of Water producer Jon Landau and the film’s Oscar-nominated VFX supervisors, Eric Saindon from Wētā FX and Richie Baneham from Lightstorm; Elvis star Austin Butler; Pinocchio‘s Guillermo del Toro; Babylon‘s Damien Chazelle; and Top Gun: Maverick‘s Jerry Bruckheimer.
Avatar: The Way of Water won the award for best live-action feature. Accepting with Saindon and Baneham, Landau saluted the technical community and urged them to continue to “innovate technologies that allow filmmakers to tell stories that could not otherwise be told.

The 1952 classic “Singin’ in the Rain” is hailed by many as one of the greatest films ever made. And yet it has also become the subject of countless myths regarding its production over the past 70 years.
During a press day for the film’s 4K Uhd release, TheWrap asked Patricia Ward Kelly, Gene Kelly’s wife and biographer, what was the biggest myth she could dispel about “Singin’ in the Rain” and she was candid: “Almost everything that you read on the internet.”
Kelly, who is also curator of the Gene Kelly archives, is baffled by the amount of misinformation about the film that continues to perpetuate online. “There’s more mythology out there now than there is factual information about it, and the myths seem to just keep perpetuating. I’ll bust a myth and then somebody will say, ‘Oh that’s not true,’ even though I’ve just...

An artist doesn’t always know they’ve created the “greatest ever” of something.
Gene Kelly certainly didn’t. And yet many cinephiles would say “Singin’ in the Rain” is the greatest-ever movie musical. Those who are on the fence about it now have another chance to assess: Warner Bros. Home Entertainment just released a 4K ultra-hd Blu-ray restoration of the movie, which Kelly co-directed with Stanley Donen, for its 70th anniversary.
In a new interview with IndieWire, Kelly’s widow and biographer, Patricia Ward Kelly, talked about the idea of cinematic greatness and what exactly it means — including for when we talk about new movie musicals being made today. Are today’s musicals pushing the medium forward the way “Singin’” did? Are they expressing as personal of a vision? Are they trying to do something new?
Though not naming names about specific recent musicals, Kelly thinks her husband would...

The Advanced Imaging Society’s Lumiere Awards winners list runs to 21 categories for distinguished creative and technical achievement. The theme for the March 3 event was “Larger Than Life” and the concept rang true as three of Hollywood’s most acclaimed directors were among the honorees. Guillermo del Toro, Adam McKay and Denis Villeneuve all took center stage in a ceremony honoring content and experiences produced for film, television, advertising, gaming, mobile, online and more.
The inaugural Gene Kelly Visionary Award was presented to del Toro by Kelly’s widow, Patricia Ward Kelly. “When I heard about the award, I thought maybe somebody had finally seen me dancing,” the “Nightmare Alley” director joked after accepting his gold-dipped statue. “Then I thought, maybe it’s for something else. The fact that he was a futurist. He was a man that was painfully aware of where the art form was and where it could be taken.

Guillermo del Toro needs to make more room in his trophy room. The Oscar-winning filmmaker will receive the Advanced Imaging Society’s Inaugural Gene Kelly Award next month.
The honor will be presented during the 12th annual Ais Lumiere Awards luncheon on March 4 at the Beverly Hilton.
“Many of us think of Gene Kelly as the legendary actor and dancer,” Ais president Jim Chabin said. “But he was as powerful a creative force behind the camera as he was in front. His bold innovations with the use of the camera, lighting, music, choreography and animation changed the course of film history and left us with a legacy of sheer motion picture magic. Guillermo del Toro fully embodies this same pioneering spirit, and we are thrilled he will be our first recipient.”

There’s something inherently seductive about the glitz and glamour of Old Hollywood. Perhaps it’s the backstage intrigue and the tawdry tales of showbusiness hedonism that draws us in again and again. Or maybe it’s the romanticized image of smokey rooms, silken gowns and stylish fedoras that we find so endlessly alluring. For many, however, it’s the larger-than-life figures from silver screen history that remain irresistible decades later.
Whatever the reason, films, books and television shows about Hollywood’s Golden Age continue to captivate new generations year after year. Look no further than Oscar-winners like “The Artist,” bestsellers like Shawn Levy’s “The Castle on Sunset,” acclaimed documentaries like “Tab Hunter Confidential,” and a host of recent TV series from Ryan Murphy if you have any doubt. Each of these attempt, in some way, to simultaneously celebrate the era while pulling back the curtain on the studio system.

The widow of famed actor/dancer Gene Kelly has leaped into the fray regarding Lara Spencer’s comments on ballet.
Patricia Ward Kelly responded in an open letter after Spencer, the Good Morning America host, mocked young Prince George over his ballet lessons, holding back laughter at the prospect of the six-year-old dancing.
“In 1958, my late husband, the dancer, director, choreographer Gene Kelly, decided to take on the stigma facing male dancers in an Omnibus television program for NBC that he created and starred in called Dancing, A Man’s Game,” wrote Ward Kelly. “Gene would be devastated to know that 61 years after his ground-breaking work, the issue of boys and men dancing is still the subject of ridicule—and on a national network,.” She concluded: “ABC must do better.”

Already taken through a polishing process ten years ago, Singin’ in the Rain is back for its 60th Anniversary, and it has really been given a superior treatment for the Blu-Ray release.
A legendary film, and one that now makes a cute pairing with similarly “talkie” exposition film, The Artist, Singin’ in the Rain is not only a cute and clever statement on its own industry and an entertaining love story, but it’s also one of the greatest musicals ever. It is such an icon of the genre, and put together so well, that a list of the top musical numbers in film would be hard-pressed not to include every musical number from Singin’ in the Rain. Not least, Gene Kelly‘s title number, which is among the most recognizable, and most referenced scenes in movie history.

Gene Kelly's Widow Files Suit Over Trading Cards
Gene Kelly's widow has filed suit against the executives of an American company over allegations they signed a deal to manufacture merchandise featuring the Singin' In The Rain star's image without her permission.
Patricia Ward Kelly filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles on Friday claiming she was approached by Stephen Bogart, son of Hollywood legends Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, in 2008 about a deal to licence Gene Kelly trading cards with his Moda firm.
Bogart, who is no longer president of the company, is said to have put forward an agreement which gave Patricia approval on the images and text used on the Donruss range of cards.
Patricia later discovered that chiefs at Donruss had allegedly been making cards and other merchandise without her permission, including one card that contained a "swatch of material... cut from an authentic item personally worn by Gene Kelly".
In the legal papers, obtained by Reuters, Patricia claims the item was "highly offensive and never would have been approved by the Gene Kelly Trust."
Patricia goes on to allege that when she complained about the items, Donruss bosses told her they had signed a deal that allowed them to make the cards without her approval, and she's adamant the document must be a forgery.
Bosses at Moda and Donruss, which has since been sold and renamed Panini America, have been named as defendants in the lawsuit, which includes accusations of breach of contract, fraud and deceit and unjust enrichment, amongst others.
