Charles Burnett is best known for his landmark portraits of Black American life, from the aching neorealism of “Killer of Sheep” to the mordant mysticism of “To Sleep with Anger,” his films aim to depict the broken contract the country made with its African American citizens in the aftermath of World War II.
His lesser-known masterpiece “My Brother’s Wedding,” however, is emblematic of a different continuum running through Burnett’s films: the theme of becoming.
An intimate window into early ’80s Los Angeles, where confluences of Black Southern roots were still trying to flower in a hostile urban environment — “My Brother’s Wedding” is a heated tale about the perils of upward mobility, the rising drug epidemic, and the tight alliance shared by two Black men, Pierce (Everett Silas) and Soldier (Ronnie Bell), the latter of whom has just been released from prison as the film begins.

WWE founder and CEO Vince McMahon has “voluntarily stepped back” from his roles as CEO and chairman of the sports entertainment powerhouse amid an “investigation into alleged misconduct” by him and John Laurinaitis, head of talent relations.
“McMahon will retain his role and responsibilities related to WWE’s creative content during this period and remains committed to cooperating with the review underway,” the company said. A special committee of the board is handling the probe. It has appointed McMahon’s daughter Stephanie to serve as interim CEO and interim chairwoman, WWE also said on Friday.
The Wall Street Journal had reported of multimillion-dollar hush money payments to women who allegedly had sexual relationships with McMahon. The allegations were spurred on after the board was contacted by someone who knew an employee who left the company earlier this year and who received a 3 million payment.

WWE Divas often get unfairly criticised by wrestling fans. The stereotype exists that a generation of girls were signed just because John Laurinaitis liked the look of them in a bikini catalogue. It was true in some cases, Johnny Ace snapped Kelly Kelly up just because he was wowed by her modelling photos.
But on the whole, WWE Divas are way more than just boobs and body. They come from diverse backgrounds, many of them with origins that will surprise you. The following is a look at some of WWE’s more interesting back stories when it comes to the female performers, both current divas and former divas.

John Laurinaitis is engaged to Kathy Colace, the mother of Nikki and Brie Bella.
The future Mrs Laurinaitis, an entrepreneur from Arizona, announced the pair’s engagement via a couple of posts on her Instagram page. The first shows the current power couple of WWE, Nikki Bella and John Cena, out for dinner with the new ‘people power’ couple of Laurinaitis and Colace accompanied by the caption: “Special night. Birthday dinner and my engagement. #peoplepower #BellaArmy.”
The second shows a glass with “Future Mrs Laurinaitis” emblazoned on it.

Kathy is often shown with her daughters on Total Divas and has been pictured at numerous WWE events down the years. This presumably explains where the will-be-weds met as Laurinaitis reportedly still works behind the scenes for WWE as a road agent.

World Wrestling Entertainment is in the middle of a bizarre moment in its history where it can honestly be said that there is a split in its talent roster between the jacked-up behemoths that Johnny Ace signed as the head of talent relations and the more internet-beloved indy wrestling darlings hired by Triple H. There’s a school of thought that says that pro wrestling’s traditional presentation benefits from wrestling being the land of the giants, but there’s equal reason to believe that smaller and more athletic wrestlers getting a shot in the company is needed, a welcomed product evolution.
As evidenced by issues including Cm Punk’s retirement, the possible retirement of Daniel Bryan and the injuries recently suffered by Sami Zayn and Hideo Itami, hiring wrestlers who represent this new generation of pro wrestling is an absolutely imprecise science. Furthermore, one can state that...

As the release date for WWE 2K15 — October 28th — continues to grow near, there seems to be a more steady flow of information being released. IGN has now released an exclusive video entitled “The Making of WWE 2K15”, which seems to be the first in a series of videos. It’s unclear how many episodes there will be, but the first one provides some solid information, as well as a great behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the wrestling simulator.
Throughout the video, there’s copious amounts of footage which showcases Cesaro performing motion capture for the game. Cesaro is shown performing various taunts, posing with a championship belt, and executing some of his signature moves. It seems that 2K mo-capped everything unique about Cesaro, especially his diverse moveset. The 6’5” powerhouse performed moves like a catching tilt-a-whirl backbreaker, a gutwrench suplex, and of course, his signature giant swing.

The wrestling world was enormously shocked this week with news of the sudden death of Jim “Ultimate Warrior” Hellwig.
It’s amazing to consider that his career in the WWF could have taken such a different path had he gone to Japan as a headliner. Eerily, his speech at the 2014 Hall of Fame and subsequent Monday Night Raw contain numerous dark premonitions about his life. His impressive win record over top opponents is unlikely to be matched again. Most surprisingly, his lawsuits have uncovered a secret 1997 WWF deal that almost brought Warrior into the Attitude-era mix.
Here are the four incredible secrets and facts about The Ultimate Warrior’s career.

Over the course of the last couple of weeks the wrestling world has been buzzing over the news that WWE will be launching their on-demand streaming network at the end of February, this year (2014). The idea of a network has been rumoured for a while but nobody knew the details until WWE provided them, in detail, a couple of weeks ago at a press conference featuring the McMahon family and an array of big WWE names.
The service will launch on February 24th 2014 and will, like Netflix streaming, feature on demand content galore, but will also feature live shows on a weekly schedule as well as all twelve annual WWE pay per view events, all in glorious HD. The fact that all the PPV’s are included is the biggest surprise here, considering that buying each show separately would cost more than a monthly payment for the network will. Oh yeah,...

Bobby “Blue” Bland, one of the last great, iconic soul and blues singers of the 20th century, died Sunday at his Memphis home. He was 83. In the late 1940s, Bland was part of the group of young Memphis musicians who banded together to form the Beale Streeters, a collection that also included such up-and-comers as B. B. King, Johnny Ace, and Junior Parker. But where most of his colleagues, and fellow titans such as Ray Charles, were singers who also had also mastered some instrument they could fall back on, Bland did it all with his voice. He earned ...

Smackdown definitely felt a little bit sweeter this week. Maybe it was just because they were from Chocolate City USA, but it seems to have much more at its center.
Let’s begin with the opening as we play storytime with The Rock and hear about his plight of a fifteen-year-old in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania craving a Whatchamacallit. I’ll give them this much. It was entertaining hearing Dwayne discuss taking a candy bar from an old lady was cute but it felt like a lot of filler considering the segment we got on Monday. And then came John Laurinaitis from the back, who now works backstage as the head road agent that’s why he was there.
The interplay between the two was okay, nothing spectacular, but everybody knew where this was going Rock was going to attack Johnny Ace after dispersing the advances of people power in fighting John Cena at Wrestlemania 29.

Last night’s WWE Raw SuperShow results from Nassau Coliseum on Long Island, New York.
Michael Cole and Jerry “The King” Lawler are on commentary.
Long Island’s own Mick Foley opens the show wearing a suit. He says he got a call late last night from the WWE Board of Directors who were calling former General Managers and Commissioners to see if they wanted to fill in whilst they figure out a permanent replacement for the fired John Laurinaitis.
Foley said for tonight’s Raw and SmackDown this week he will be the temporary host. He announces a Kane and Daniel Bryan vs World Heavyweight Champion Sheamus and WWE Champion Cm Punk for tonight.
Foley then introduces John Laurinaitis to give a farewell address. Laurinaitis comes out on a crutch, with his arm in a sling and a brace around his neck. “You Got Fired” chants plays as Laurinaitis comes to the ring gingerly.

Triple H has replaced John Laurinaitis as the Executive Vice President of Talent Relations on WWE’s corporate website, making it official that Hhh (listed under his real name Paul Levesque) has taken over his duties.
The change had actually been made some time ago and Laurinaitis had been working under Triple H for a while as Hhh hired Jane Geddes as the new Vice President of Talent Relations (who has taken on making of the duties Laurinaitis had been doing), and Canyon Cemen as the head of Talent Development. Both Geddes and Cemen now report directly to Triple H according to Wrestling Observer Newsletter.
As Laurinaitis had become a regular on-air character, he has had many of his back office duties greatly reduced. The expectation now is that Laurinaitis’ job will be changed further as Triple H stamps his authority in his new role and puts his own people in key positions.

Last night’s WWE Raw SuperShow from the Xl Center in Hartford, Connecticut.
John Laurinaitis comes down to start the bumper packed three-hour Raw show and is about to introduce himself when Vince McMahon’s No Chance music plays and he gets a big pop from the crowd.
Vince gets in the ring and says he won’t shake Johnny’s hand because he doesn’t know where he has been. He wants to get right to the job evaluation and he asks Laurinaitis why he should be spared from being fired. Laurinaitis says two words – people power. He says he fumbles his words but he listens to people and he empowers them and they love him for it.
Vince asks the fans if they love Laurinaitis and the response isn’t good. A “fire Johnny” chant breaks out in the crowd as he attempts to suck up to Vince.

Last night’s WWE Raw SuperShow results, live from the Bi Lo Center in Greenville, South Carolina.
The show opens with a video looking back at Big Show explaining his actions for turning hell.
John Cena’s music hits and he comes out to the ring for an interview with Michael Cole. Cole mentions to Cena that he has received two knockout punches from Show in 24 hours and Cole reminds us that he has taken out Brodus Clay, Alex Riley, Santino Marella, Zack Ryder, Kofi Kingston and R-Truth in the last week. Cole says none of this would have happened if he had supported Big Show in the first place. Cena jumps in and cuts a promo on John Laurinaitis saying he is power hungry. Cena says he is going to take out Show at WWE No Way Out pay-per-view.
Cole says Cena is self-centered and wrapped up in his own ego.

WWE Over the Limit Recap. May 20th 2012 from the Pnc Centre in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Pre Show:
Kane defeated Zack Ryder
Kane went from two pay-per-view matches against Randy Orton, to a pre-show nothing clash against Zack Ryder. It was short and it wasn’t surprising, but what do you expect from a pre show? Kane won after reversing the Ruff Ryder into a Choke Slam.
WWE Over The Limit goes live…
Battle Royal for #1 Contender to Intercontinental or Us Title
Christian wins!
After Kane and Ryder ended on the pre show, we got the entrances of mostly everyone on the main roster who didn’t already have a match. William Regal got noticeably larger reaction than everyone else… until Christian returned as a surprise entrant. Weird that they didn’t save it for the main show. Once everyone was in the ring, we went Live to the Pay Per View.

After arguably throwing money down the drain with their Extreme Rules PPV last month, Vince McMahon’s WWE is back on your TV this weekend with their 3rd Over The Limit event. With no advertised appearance by Brock Lesnar one has to wonder how the buy rate will be affected, especially with a main event featuring a non wrestler.
Kane Vs Zack Ryder (Dark Match)
It seems illogical to have this match as a dark match when you consider the TV exposure Ryder got at the hands of his various beatings from The Big Red Machine. Hell, Ryder even interjected himself in Kane’s last PPV match with Randy Orton so surely the payoff for fans is to see this on television?
Prediction: We all know Ryder needs the victory but with the continued downward spiral of the Long Island Iced Z it’s surely another meaningless win for the masked demon.

Michael Cole and Booker T on commentary. Lilian Garcia performs God Save The Queen to start the show.
Daniel Bryan comes out to a big cheer and lots of Yes! chants. He says Sheamus cheated to win the World Heavyweight Title and he plans to win the title back at Extreme Rules. Aj Lee then comes out and refuses to leave when Bryan orders her too. Aj says she wants to talk about their problems. Bryan then says she wishes Aj was never born and he will never take her back. He leaves her in the ring crying.

Tonight's show is guest-hosted by Sean Hayes, Will Sasso and Chris Diamantopoulos, portraying Moe, Larry and Curly, in promotion for their new movie "The Three Stooges." Back in 2009, Raw tried to one-up "Saturday Night Live" by having a new guest host every week -- it resulted in the single worst year of WWE programming ever. Lame comedy skits with disinterested celebrities hijacked the show each week. The only consistent wrestling we got for a year, was the always-predictable John Cena, perpetual "underdog" who never actually loses.
Last week, WWE delivered what I called the "best post-WrestleMania Raw ever." The challenge always comes with the week after that. This show is like December 26 and Christmas is never farther away. With the return of Ufc sensation Brock Lesnar, perhaps WWE will turn the tide of years past and deliver an exciting show. The only thing standing in the way is the Three Stooges.

The Super Bowl of Sports Entertainment, WrestleMania 28, is here with a four-hour extravaganza from Miami, Florida. The night's main event pits wrestling legend-turned-Hollywood star, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson against WWE's biggest attraction, John Cena. Cena thinks Rock is a sell-out who can't go anymore. Rock thinks Cena is overrated, one-note and protected by corporate PR. Who's right? The only way to settle it is to get in the ring.

The second least interesting story in WWE right now (sorry “Isn’t Eve totally a bitch!?”) is the ongoing feud between Raw General Manager John Laurinaitis and SmackDown General Manager Teddy Long. But, if the idea is to show how totally inept Johnny Ace is, and how great the Holla-Holla-Playa-in-Chief is at running wrestling shows, WWE absolutely nailed it this week, with a Monday Night Raw that was run by he-of-the-idiotically-large-suits himself, and was also pretty darn rad.
Still, the show was two hours and had, if I remember correctly, 37 different pretape segments, so it wasn’t All good, of course. In fact, there were some moments that might be considered “bad,” and others that you might even think of as “ugly.” To find out what they are, keep on reading below, and make sure to tell me how wrong and/or handsome I am in the comments section. The current idea for the John Laurinaitis and Teddy Long feud over the General Managership of both the Raw and SmackDown shows is expected to culminate in a ‘Winner Takes All’ multi-man tag match at WrestleMania 28.
The Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that a match involving a Laurinaitis captained team of heels would face a Long captained babyface team, with the winning captain becoming the permanent General Manager of both shows.
With the endorsement for Laurinaitis from the returning trio of Alberto Del Rio, Mark Henry and Christian, along with his lawyer David Otunga… we would probably suggest that is one team. Long’s team is less certain but could possibly include Randy Orton, Santino Marella, Drew McIntyre (which would be a good idea to do a storyline where Drew starts winning matches and ends up getting a place on the team, before turning on Long to join Johnny Ace’s...

New York — Is Nc-17 really the kiss of death? Will the merest flash of naked flesh or the softest moan from hot, sweaty bods doom a film to celluloid purgatory? Granted, only one movie with the adults-only marker (no one under 17 admitted) has become a box-office hit ("Showgirls"), some have won critical acclaim. "Midnight Cowboy," released before Nc-17 with an X rating, even won a best picture Academy Award.
With director Steve McQueen's hotly anticipated "Shame" opening this weekend with an Nc-17 rating and Oscar buzz, I thought it the perfect opportunity to take a look at other Nc-17 movies that are worth seeing. Believe it or not, there are more than you may think.
In chronological order:
_"Last Tango in Paris" (1972): For me, it's one of the best in the Nc-17 line-up. It was originally released with an X rating, which became Nc-17 when it was rereleased...

Smackdown (7/10/2011)
First we recap Triple H losing control, and the whole locker room walking out on him. And when we join Smackdown, Teddy Long is on the phone with Hhh. Zack Ryder wants to know what’s going on. Teddy says Smackdown is being left to him, since he doesn’t want to risk the same thing happening on Smackdown. “Raw’s loss is Smackdown’s gain.”
Excuse Me! In the ring is Vickie Guerrero, Jack Swagger, Christian, Wade Barrett, Otunga, Rhodes and Dolph Ziggler. Christian welcomes us to “the Walkout.” He says this all happened because he had the courage to stand up to Hhh. “Triple H” chant from the crowd. Dolph takes the mic. He says the walkout was because of all of them banding together. Otunga explains that Hhh has made an unsafe work environment on Raw so they’ve walked until he is not in charge of day to day operations.
