Manchester, Oct 2 (Ians) Erling Haaland and Phil Foden both scored hat-tricks as defending champion Manchester City outplayed Manchester United 6-3 in the cross-town derby on Sunday to move up to the one-point behind leaders Arsenal in the Premier League.
City produced a blistering performance to dismantle Manchester United to emerge winners in front of a packed Etihad crowd. Man City now have 20 points from eight matches while Chelsea lead the table with 21.
The champions were 4-0 ahead at half-time after two goals apiece from Foden and Haaland, as United struggled to cope with the pace of their arch-rivals.
Antony got one back for the visitors early in the second half with a fine curling effort.
But Haaland and Foden completed their trebles to put City 6-1 up before Anthony Martial’s close-range header and late penalty reduced the deficit.
It was yet another brilliant performance for City at the Etihad...

6ix9ine has boasted A Lot about his soccer skills -- and even hit the pitch with international soccer superstar Mario Balotelli. He is definitely not the worst goalie we have ever seen, but he ain't exactly David de Gea either. We'll give Tekashi the benefit of the doubt -- maybe he was a bit distracted.

With less than a week to go before the 17/18 season starts, it’s hard to see the Premier League trophy ending up anywhere other than back up north. Though as a born and bred southerner, anything past the Watford Gap service station I classify as north. Which gives me a good chance of being right, as half of the clubs in the Premier League reside up north. So perhaps I should be more specific. In my opinion; the title will be heading to Manchester, now whether that be the blue half or the red, that’s harder to say.
With Manchester City having already spent over £200 million and Manchester United a close second, spending around £160 million, they lead the way in the transfer market this summer. They’ve sent out a clear message to the other title contenders, with only the Champions, Chelsea trying to keep up. Of course the...

Luis Suárez, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are, unsurprisingly, among the highest-ranked players in FIFA 17, but for the first time in seven years, the latter Barcelona superstar is no longer the pick of the bunch.
Buoyed by a standout performance at this summer’s European Championships, it is Cristiano Ronaldo that has become the Mvp of FIFA 17 with a ranking of 94, with the Argentine nipping at his heels with an overall stat value of 93. Between them, Barcelona playermakers Suárez and Neymar, along with German shot-stopper Manuel Neuer, each hold a value of 92. You’ll be able to find the full breakdown over on EA’s official site.
There’s plenty to decipher, too, with cover star Marco Reus checking in with 88 stat value.
1. Cristiano Ronaldo – 94 (Real Madrid)
2. Lionel Messi – 93 (Barcelona)
3. Neymar – 92 (Barcelona)

FIFA 16 is coming. And just to tease you ahead of its release later in September, game-makers EA Sports have spent the last few days releasing new tidbits of information.
There’s been a demo. There’s a brand new top 50. And now, they’ve confirmed the top 20 rated goalkeepers for the new version of the game. It’s an exciting time you know, especially given the goalkeeping AI seems to have gotten a whole lot better in comparison to last year’s version.
One goalkeeping legend has again made it into the 90’s for his overall rating, but there’s been some major shuffling (in terms of downgrades and upgrades) when it comes to the order to the men who follow.
England’s Premier League is strongly populates the top 20, with a number of high-class goalkeepers given generous ratings to reflect their qualities. Leagues as far reaching as Turkey and Portugal (okay,...

Transfer Deadline Day is here and for the next few hours there will be an inundation of flimsy transfer speculation, blue, white and red ticker bars and an obstreperous Jim White. Luckily for Manchester United fans, David de Gea’s name may not be mentioned by the aforementioned three as much as once imagined with the news that his proposed move to Real Madrid has collapsed due to ‘paperwork issues’ (wink, wink).
What a relief. The Red Devils now have a keeper who desperately wants to leave the club (although his stance may swiftly change by tomorrow morning) and who will undoubtedly sign for the Spanish giants in January. On and off the field, Louis van Gaal is doing his best to prove that Man United are no longer one of the biggest clubs in the world and after signing Monaco’s Anthony Martial for somewhere between £36-£50 million,...

After strong rumours on Friday night that Bastian Schweinsteiger was on the verge of a move to Manchester United to reunite with former Bayern Munich boss Louis Van Gaal, his current club have publicly confirmed that an agreement has been reached between the two clubs.
Bild had reported on Friday night that a deal amounting to €20 million was on the table, and Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has now confirmed that the deal is heading towards completion.
That follows swiftly on from Bayern’s new signing Joshua Kimmich letting the cat out of the bag during his press conference when he said he was “disappointed Bastian will leave us this summer.”
Rummenigge admitted that the club’s hand was effectively forced when the German asked to be allowed to take on another challenge before the end of his career.

Newcastle United have been linked with a move for Marseille goalkeeper Steve Mandanda – should Tottenham Hotspur tempt Tim Krul down to London this summer.
Eurosport claim that Spurs are planning to raid the Magpies for Krul if Manchester United sign Hugo Lloris as a replacement for David de Gea, who is being heavily courted by Real Madrid.
Valencia and Roma are also said to be tracking the 30-year-old France international goalkeeper, who could be allowed to leave the Stade Velodrome due to the fact he has just a year remaining on his Marseille contract.
Interestingly, the Marseille captain is now the seventh player from the club to be linked with a move to Tyneside this summer – after defender Nicolas N’Koulou, winger Florian Thauvin, midfielder Mario Lemina, and forwards Lucas Ocampos (who signed for the club from Monaco last month), Andre-Pierre Gignac (who moved...

Iker Casillas could be finally be on his way out of Madrid this summer with reports suggesting the goalkeeper is attracting interest from As Roma.
The Spanish international has been at his childhood club for the whole of his career so far, but the newly appointed Real Madrid head coach, Rafa Benitez, is set to drop him for the expected arrival of Manchester United keeper David De Gea.
In a report by The Mirror, it is claimed that the Italian side are in the process of making contact with Casillas.
However, any move for the most capped Spanish star would have to burst the bank, with the player who has captained World Cup, European Championship and Champions League winning teams reportedly earning €3million-a-year, with two years remaining on his lucrative deal.

Real Madrid are edging closer to completing the signing of David De Gea from Manchester United according to Spanish newspaper Marca.
Los Blancos are reportedly close to agreeing an initial fee of £18 million for the goalkeeper with an additional £3.5 million due to be paid based on performances and achievements.
The report claims De Gea has made up his mind after taking time off to assess his options. There’s little doubting that he has made himself more than at home in Manchester but the chance to return to his home city of Madrid looks like it was too good to turn down.
If he does leave like Marca say he will, the 24-year-old will become Rafael Benitez’s first signing of his reign at The Bernabeu. The deal is expected to be announced when the transfer window officially opens in July.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has given his clearest indication yet that goalkeeper David de Gea could leave Old Trafford in favour of a move to Real Madrid, according to BBC Sport.
The outlook is not particularly promising for Manchester United fans with the Spanish stopper, who has kept 11 clean sheets this season and pulled off multiple world class saves, was substituted before the end of the game with an injury. As De Gea left the pitch, he looked to be paying his final farewells to the Old Trafford faithful before Victor Valdes took to the field to replace him and make his full debut for the club.
The Dutchman claimed that he didn’t know whether Real Madrid had in fact made an offer for the player, but he said the Red Devils number one faces a tough decision and it would be tempting...

Newcastle United’s Moussa Sissoko believes teammate Emmaneul Riviere can hit 15 goals in the remainder of this season… Once he finds the net for the first time in the Premier League.
Riviere has been nothing short of a flop since making the switch from Ligue 1 side Monaco last summer for somewhere in the region of £6 million.
But one of his many compatriots in the Magpie’s squad thinks there is cause to be optimistic for the rest of the season, despite Newcastle’s main goalscoring threat Papiss Cisse now banned for seven games thanks to ‘spitgate’.
Moussa, who spoke in soundbites to the Evening Chronicle, said: “We know with strikers it can be hard to score your first goal. After that he can maybe score 10 to 15 goals. But you have to score that first one first. He had the chance but didn’t score. I hope...

Though their league table has improved in recent months after the disastrous tenure of David Moyes, the Red Devils are still far from the finished product under Louis Van Gaal, and they continue to look vulnerable through defensive midfield and the heart of their defence with David De Gea having to play out of his skin at times. That has to change if the Dutch manager has his eyes on a strong top four finish, and a title tilt next year, and it can’t all come down to tactical reinvention.
Right now, the United squad should still be considered as under construction, even with tens of millions invested in the summer. There are some serious areas of development, and Van Gaal undoubtedly needs to add more goals (especially if the last hours of the transfer window prove problematic in defensive terms). Quite how the manager will prioritise remains to be seen,...

Spanish goalkeeper David de Gea has spoken out to urge new Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal to keep one of the key members of the squad, and add a World Cup team-mate as part of what is likely to be an extensive and expensive rebuilding process this summer.
The ‘keeper spoke to Movistar to say that Van Gaal must keep his compatriot play-maker Juan Mata at the club this summer, with sweeping changes on the cards at Old Trafford and the club looking towards a new dawn after a season of relative disaster.
Mata’s acquisition was a shining light in David Moyes’ otherwise disappointing tenure at the club, and De Gea believes that Van Gaal needs to keep faith in the player who was mooted as a key to rebuilding the squad:
“I would not sell Juan Mata. He is a very important player for us.

Edin Dzeko scored twice and Yaya Toure bagged a third as Manchester City moved to within three points of Premier League leaders Chelsea by ruthlessly disposing of neighbours United.
Dzeko put the visitors in front after less than fifty seconds with a simple tap in and completed his brace after half time after running into the United box unmarked to convert Samir Nasri’s cross.
And Toure added the gloss his side’s performance deserved on 90 minutes with a drive into the bottom corner as the champions crashed to their second defeat of the season to their derby rivals.
United, struggling under new manager David Moyes, were subjected to another sobering evening at Old Trafford less than a fortnight on from their heavy home defeat to Liverpool.
And things weren’t much better here as their once ‘noisy neighbours’ proved the balance in power has well and truly shifted in Manchester.

Two penalties from Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard helped the Reds secure a 3-0 victory at Old Trafford, their first at the ground since 2007.
Gerrard opened the scoring after 35 minutes from the spot before doubling the advantage a minute into the second-half. Gerrard missed a later penalty, which would’ve given him the first Premier League hat-trick from the penalty spot but Luis Suarez found the net late on to seal a comfortable victory.
Liverpool started the game brightly with Daniel Sturridge unleashing a forceful shot that narrowly went past the wrong side of David De Gea’s post, before Luis Suarez went down under pressure in the box and appealed for a spot-kick.

It was one of the more uneventful clashes between Manchester United and Arsenal, but it was fine defensive work and goalkeeping displays that resulted in no goals being scored by either side. With both sides looking to bounce back from disappointing results at the weekend, it is no surprise that it was a tentative affair.
Robin van Persie had a headed attempt saved by man of the match Wojciech Szczęsny, while David De Gea pulled off a number of top saves to keep out Arsenal’s on-target attempts. Antonio Valencia also headed Laurent Koscielny’s effort off the line, and there were also chances fluffed by the former Arsenal man, van Persie.
A point was perhaps deserved by both sides, and gives each of them more confidence after their abysmal weekend. Arsenal lost 5-1 to Liverpool in a surprising domination at Anfield, but they were still...

The task of replacing Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United was never going to be a walk in the park for any manager, let alone a man who has never won silverware with his previous club. David Moyes was handed the tough task of taking over as Manchester United boss in the summer of 2013 and he alongside new Chief Executive Ed Woodward made no secret of the players they wanted to bring in to the club.
Manchester United have always managed to lure in some of the best players to help capture the Premier League crown. Investing heavily in players such as Robin van Persie, Dimitar Berbatov and Juan Mata whilst also investing in youth to solidify the then-dominance of Manchester United for their future. Players like Nick Powell, Phil Jones and David de Gea were brought in to continue playing the Manchester United way.

Manchester United were held to a draw by basement side Fulham thanks to a late goal from Darren Bent.
Steve Sidwell had earlier given the visitors a shock first-half lead but United fought back to go in front with quickfire goals from Robin van Persie and Michael Carrick.
But the drama wasn’t over and Bent would have the last say when his close ranged header on 90 minutes again reduced Old Trafford to silence.

United pressed for an equalizer and upped the tempo and at last...

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has made a marked improvement since arriving at Old Trafford from Atletico Madrid in 2011.
After a difficult spell in England which saw his body strength and abilities to cope with the rigours of English football called into question, the Spaniard has put his troubles behind him.
De Gea’s performances have been one of only a few positives from what has largely been a troublesome debut season for David Moyes, who has struggled to step into Sir Alex Ferguson’s shoes.
United have already lost eight times this season, the most games they have ever lost since the inception of the Premier League, and are floundering in seventh.
But while the Red Devils have been struggling, midfielder Darren Fletcher recently singled de Gea out for praise, saying:
He has been fantastic for us. There has not been a better goalkeeper around for the last 18 months.

Samuel Eto’o became the first Chelsea player since 1954 to hit a hat-trick against Manchester United. A heavy defeat at Stamford Bridge despite Javier Hernandez’s consolation left David Moyes and the Red Devils 14 points off the pace, effectively ending their bid to defend the Premier League title.
Ashley Young drew a low early stop from Petr Cech as United made the better start. Despite that hosts Chelsea went ahead after a quarter of an hour through Eto’o. The veteran African saw his near post shot loop off Michael Carrick and over David De Gea in the opposite corner.
Goalmouth action scarcely followed in this tight, cagey contest. Danny Welbeck scuffed a close range effort straight at Petr Cech late on in the first half after. Cesar Azpilicueta did just enough to put the Red Devils frontman off.
Oscar then went close...

Manchester United travel to Chelsea on Sunday hoping for better than the bore draw the sides produced in August. David Moyes also knows that Jose Mourinho has never lost a home Premier League game in English football. No pressure then.
The Red Devils ship was steadied in their last outing as Moyes ended a run of three successive defeats by being injury-hit Swansea. Mourinho’s Blues meanwhile recorded five straight wins since another tepid goalless draw with Arsenal before Christmas.
United have only one victory in their last six against Chelsea, coincidentally a 3-2 win at Stamford Bridge in October 2012. Sendings off for Branislav Ivanovic and Fernando Torres proved pivotal as the Blues had comeback from 2-0 down to equalize before Javier Hernandez sunk the nine men.

Second half goals from Antonio Valencia and Danny Welbeck helped Manchester United end their run of three games without victory and return to winning ways at Old Trafford.
A loss here would have been United’s fourth consecutive defeat for the first time in over 50 years but Valencia’s tap in and Welbeck’s skillful flick ended the champion’s slump under David Moyes.
The game started in slow fashion with Swansea’s Jonjo Shelvey seeing his fourth-minute speculative shot from the edge of the United box easily saved by David de Gea.
A minute later, Shelvey upended Adnan Januzaj and Nemanja Vidic’s connection with the resulting free-kick rose over Gerhard Tremmel’s goal.
United were beginning to show signs of menace and, after Jordi Amat brought Welbeck down on the edge of the box, the scheming Januzaj saw his freekick rebound off the crossbar.

Sunderland hold a slender advantage over Manchester United in the Capital One Cup semi-final after Ryan Giggs’s own goal and a Fabio Borini penalty gave them victory in the first leg. Red Devils captain Nemanja Vidic brought the visitors level, but the Black Cats inflicted a third successive defeat on David Moyes.
This tie was brought to life after a dull and decidedly cagey opening on 25 minutes when a deflected Giggs effort pinged off the top of the bar. Sunderland certainly showed little respect to the Premier League champions here, but lacked quality to make much of an impression.
Adnan Januzaj had the ball in the net seven minutes before the break for United, rifling home at the second attempt. This was rightly ruled out, however, as the initial effort hit Giggs in an offside position.

Sunderland have not beaten Manchester United since they last met in the League Cup over 13 years ago. Kevin Phillips’s extra time penalty took the Black Cats into quarter-finals in November 2000 with Red Devils goalscorer Dwight Yorke being sent off.
United have since won 16 of the 20 subsequent encounters that have all come in the Premier League and the other four were drawn. The Black Cats will have home advantage first in this two-legged tie with the winners to face either West Ham United or Manchester City at Wembley.
Gus Poyet has had defensive injuries worrying him, but despite Sunderland’s struggle in the league they remain in both domestic cup competitions. The basement club of the English top flight will be targeting an upset in this first leg similar to their shock win over City in November.

Swansea made history by winning at Old Trafford thanks to Wayne Routledge’s early chip and a late Wilfried Bony header. Manchester United fell at the first Fa Cup hurdle despite Javier Hernandez scoring as substitute Fabio was sent off.
Defeat for the Red Devils – their fifth at home in all competitions this term – increases the pressure on David Moyes. United are still in the Capital One Cup, but look short of strength to defend their Premier League title and make a big splash in the Champions League.

Tottenham Hotspur won at Old Trafford for the second successive season thanks to goals from Emmanuel Adebayor and Christian Eriksen. Manchester United responded through Danny Welbeck, but the Premier League champions stay 11 points adrift of leaders Arsenal.
Welbeck forced Hugo Lloris in the Spurs goal to parry away early on as he raced through on goal and left Michael Dawson for dead. Chris Smalling also drew a save from the visiting keeper.
David De Gea was then worked by Aaron Lennon when Adebayor found Soldado and the Spanish striker slipped in the Tottenham winger. Nemanja Vidic headed wide from a right wing corner on 20 minutes, but the Red Devils later conceded on the counter.
Adebayor headed home Eriksen’s stood up centre ten minutes before half time and Hotspur then could have gone in two goals ahead. Soldado shanked wide, however, when found by a lovely Lennon cross.

Premier League champions Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have drawn their last two meetings. They start 2014 level on points and next to one another in the table both looking to close the gap on the top four.
David Moyes’s Red Devils have hit fine form in their festive fixtures by recording six successive victories after failing to win the first three matches in December. Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood meanwhile got the second win of his reign against Stoke on Sunday.
Spurs are also buoyed by the fact they won on their last visit to Old Trafford in September 2012. Clint Dempsey netted the winner then, but has re-joined former club Fulham on loan from Mls franchise Seattle Sounders.

A Wayne Rooney-inspired Manchester United came from two goals down to beat Hull City at the Kc Stadium. The Tigers went ahead early through James Chester’s first Premier League goal and extended it through David Meyler.
Chris Smalling pulled one back for the Red Devils nodding in a Rooney set piece. The England talisman then scored the pick of the goals to restore parity. Rooney then started and finished a move that saw Chester put through his own net midway through the second half.
Hosts Hull went ahead with three and a half minutes played from a controversially awarded corner. Replays showed Ahmed Elmohamady’s cross never touched Tom Cleverley. Chester profited nonetheless as he fired home against his former club when fellow defender Alex Bruce knocked down to him.
United’s poor start continued as they were two down inside 15 minutes after some pinball in the penalty area.

Ashley Young scored his first club goal since May 2012 as Manchester United survived stormy weather to win at Stoke City in the Capital One Cup quarter-finals. David Moyes’s Red Devils edged a match of few chances with captain Patrice Evra also on target.
Young fired wide into the side-netting for United as hosts Stoke survived an early scare. Anderson then worked Thomas Sorensen in the home goal with a low effort midway through the first half.
Referee Mark Clattenburg briefly brought the players off amid a hailstorm. The delay lasted about eight minutes. Just before half time both Red Devils centre backs almost combined for a corner when Chris Smalling nodded across to the unsuspecting Jonny Evans.
Just after the hour the visitors went ahead as Young emphatically ended his goal drought, smashing home after a one-two with sub Javier Hernandez. Evans then looped a header...

Manchester United’s excellent record away to Aston Villa continued as a first half Danny Welbeck double set the Premier League champions on their way to victory. Tom Cleverley was also on target after the break as David Moyes won his first league game in over a month.
Villa flew out of the traps with winger Marc Albrighton twice testing Red Devils number one David De Gea in the opening ten minutes. Christian Benteke’s touch then let him down when his teammate played him in.

A single goal from Yohan Cabaye helped Newcastle United to their first win at Old Trafford since 1972 and pile yet more pressure on under fire manager David Moyes.
The Frenchman stunned the home crowd on the hour mark with a close ranged finish after disastrous defending from Patrice Evra as the Magpies claimed their first away win over the champions in over 40 years.
The big news ahead of kick-off was Robin van Persie being named in the starting XI after four games out with a groin injury.
But even the returning Dutchman couldn’t inspire a lackluster United who are now four games without a league win and could find themselves 15 points off leaders Arsenal by the end of the weekend.
The Magpies showed the same sort of industry exhibited by Everton on Wednesday and got at United, in what was a cagey opening half of very few clear-cut opportunities.

Everton recorded their first victory at Old Trafford since 1992 to condemn Manchester United manager David Moyes to defeat in his first game against his former side.
A well-taken finish from Bryan Oviedo was enough to settle this pulsating encounter, leaving the defending English champions winless in three Premier League matches and way off the pace in the title race.
Romelu Lukaku, who has been a thorn in United’s side in the past, naturally created the goal, teeing up Oviedo to slot home from deep inside the area.
United created enough chances – and hit the woodwork twice – but it was Everton who left the Theatre of Dreams with the spoils to move fifth in the table.
The Toffee’s had the better of the opening exchanges, with Lukaku looking a constant menace, dragging a shot wide of the target after four minutes and making some dangerous runs at United’s defence.

Wayne Rooney bagged a brace as Manchester United twice came from behind at White Hart Lane to hold Tottenham Hotspur. The hosts registered through Kyle Walker’s free kick and a stunner from Sandro.
This slow burning contest saw goalmouth action markedly absent early on. Aaron Lennon produced a tame effort off his weaker foot, so it trickled through to David De Gea for the hosts.
Sandro then had to be on hand to block Rooney’s effort after Vlad Chiriches cheaply ceded possession. Spurs went ahead on 18 minutes after surviving that Red Devils scare.
Jonny Evans fouled Paulinho on the edge of the box and up stepped Tottenham right back Walker, who fired a low free kick under the wall and past De Gea.
Spurs skipper Michael Dawson then saw a shot blocked by Rooney as he turned a right wing corner towards United’s goal.

Arsenal have been put on alert after goalkeeper Iker Casillas suggested he could leave Real Madrid if he is unable to force his way back into the team, according to the Independent.
The 32-year-old found himself displaced by Diego Lopez at the Bernabeu last season under the reign of Jose Mourinho, though it was widely expected he would retain his place once the Special One returned to Chelsea.
However, that has not been the case with his successor Carlo Ancelotti also preferring Lopez with Casillas yet to make a single appearance in La Liga this term.
And the Spain captain, who has been at Madrid his entire career, has now hinted he could quit the club after growing frustrated by his spell on the sidelines.
He is reported to have told local media in Madrid:
“Players go through moments when if you are not playing a part you think about making some sort of decision.

Manchester United winger Adnan Januzaj was the difference as the Premier League holders came from behind to take all three points against a much-improved Sunderland.
The hosts took a deserved lead inside of five minutes through midfielder Craig Gardner. United defender Phil Jones dealt with a cross put in by Emanuele Giaccherini, but Jones’ pass to Vidic bounced off the Serb and fell to Gardner in the box who finished with aplomb into the bottom corner.
Nani may have felt he should have equalised minutes later, after hitting a fierce strike just past the post, and putting another chance wide after being unmarked inside the area from a free kick.
Against the run of play, Sunderland were inches away from doubling their lead. Giaccherini headed goalwards from a cross which was well saved by United ‘keeper David De Gea.
The very same man had another glorious opportunity...

As Premier League referee Michael Oliver signalled for the end of play on Saturday afternoon, his whistle blew on Manchester United’s worst start to a season since 1989.
Then, the Red Devils accumulated just seven points from their first six games three years into Sir Alex Ferguson’s reign, form which nearly led to the now-legendary boss getting the axe.
It was in that same campaign that the now-infamous bed sheet was unveiled at Old Trafford, reading: “Three Years of Excuses and It’s Still Crap. Ta Ra Fergie.”
And, as West Brom’s Saido Berahino saw his low strike nestle in the bottom corner of David de Gea’s net at the weekend, you feared the same fate might have awaited David Moyes.
As I sat in the press box, the message coming from the travelling Albion fans to my right directed at Moyes was aubible...

Manchester United crashed to their worst start to a Premier League season since 1989 with a shock defeat against West Brom at Old Trafford.
Second half goals from Morgan Amalfitano and Saido Berahino either side of a sumptuous Wayne Rooney freekick condemned the defending champions to their second consecutive league loss.
The Red Devils started the brighter of the two and had the Baggies hemmed into their own half in the early exchanges, with Javier Hernandez and Nani looking threatening.
The latter almost created an opening midway through the first half after floating a cross in toward Rooney, who saw the ball drift past him out of play.
West Brom weren’t without their chances either, and were happy to operate on the counter attack for large swathes of the first half.
Stephane Sessegnon came the closest for the away side when he flashed a header across the...

It was a night to remember for Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney, as he grabbed a brace, while etching his name in the history books after netting 200 goals for the club.
After a strong start from the hosts, Rooney opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, finishing from a Patrice Evra cross.
United were dominant during the first half, and started the second-half brightly, but a swift counter-attack saw Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Simon Rolfes score a deflected effort past David De Gea after the break to level the tie.
Van Persie took just minutes to swing the game United’s way, after scoring a volley on the turn before the hour mark.
Rooney then became the fourth player in Manchester United history to score 200 goals for the club, after he capitalised on a defensive error to cooly slot home at the near post.

A brace by both Robin van Persie and Danny Welbeck ensured Manchester United’s winning start to the season and hushed David Moyes’ numerous critics in spectacular fashion.
Van Persie opened the scoring before Welbeck doubled United’s lead with a simple tap in. After the break the Dutchman doubled his tally with an emphatic strike and Welbeck finished the rout with a deft chip. Swansea debutant Wilfried Bony scored the consolation goal for the home team.
Swansea started the tie brightly, maintaining possession with ease and putting the visiting fans at unease but it was United who attempted to draw first blood. A viciously struck volley by Phil Jones, from a Ryan Giggs free kick, forced goalkeeper Michel Vorm into a leaping save to put the ball over the bar.
Giggs was also denied a clear goalscoring opportunity when Welbeck decided to take on the Swansea...

Manchester United striker Robin Van Persie believes his side are still the one’s to beat as the new Barclays Premier League season fast approaches.
Van Persie was speaking to ITV after yesterday’s Community Shield in which United cruised to a comfortable 2-0 victory over Championship side Wigan Athletic at Wembley.
The win handed David Moyes his first trophy in his managerial career and therefore his first since he replaced Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford.
And despite a difficult build-up to the new season with the lack of a marquee signing and speculation surrounding the future of Wayne Rooney, Van Persie – who scored both goals this afternoon – insists United should still be considered the favourites this season.
He said: “We’re doing really well and I believe in this team” adding “We are the champions and based on that we are clear favourites.”
Around 80,000 spectators made the...

The Premier League, often considered the best and strongest league in the world. Currently down in 2nd in the UEFA coefficient and without a UEFA Champions League representative at the quarter-final stage last season.
Managers of each of the top 3 finishing clubs were replaced over the summer which included the retirement of the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson – the mastermind behind Manchester United’s success over the past two decades or so and playing a key part in the role of helping the English Premier League become one of the best leagues in the world during that time.
Over the past couple of seasons, the Premier League has seen a lot of exciting and highly-rated players come from abroad. A few names – Sergio Agüero, Mario Balotelli, Santi Cazorla, Júlio César, David de Gea, Eden Hazard, Lewis Holtby, Shinji Kagawa, Hugo Lloris, Romelu Lukaku, Juan Mata, Oscar, Lukas Podolski, Sandro, David Silva,...

EA will reveal which Premier League star will be joining Lionel Messi on the cover of the UK edition of FIFA 14 later today.
The company has already revealed the global boxart, which features four-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi. The Barcelona ace will be flanked by superstars specific to each region.
Last year, the UK cover art featured Messi alongside Arsenal’s Alex Oxlade Chamberlain and Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart.
EA have teased who the latest UK cover star may be with a short trailer, which you can watch here.
The inclusion of City goalkeeper Joe Hart last September made sense, given that the Sky Blues had just won the Premier League title.
Following that logic, could we be seeing a Manchester United player joining Messi on the UK cover art this year?
How about the Red Devil’s much-improved young goalkeeper David de Gea? Or seven-time Fifa box-artist Wayne Rooney,...

According to Espn, Chelsea have joined Premier League Champions Manchester United in the race to sign Barcelona’s young Spaniard sensation, Thiago Alcantara.
The 22-year-old attacking midfielder has already been linked with a move to Old Trafford but Chelsea hope to hijack any potential deal to Manchester and instead bring the player to Stamford Bridge.
Thiago is apparently available for just €18 million due to his current release clause was activated after appearing in less than 60% of the La Liga Champions’ games last season, although that is set to rise to €90 million come the end of July, suggesting that any club intending on bidding for the Spanish youngster would likely have to complete the deal in the next few weeks.
Thiago scored a first-half hat-trick in the final of the Under-21 European Championship, which Spain were named the victors in 4-2 win over Italy’s U21 team. He played in 27 La...

Last night, Spain answered their critics by ruthlessly disposing of Italy in the Final of the U21 European Championships.
Following Barcelona’s humiliation by German giants Bayern Munich in the semi-finals of the Champions League after being knocked out 7-0 on aggregate, many questions were raised over whether Spain were headed for a downward spiral.
Germany, it was said, would be the major world force in years to come and Bayern, not Barca, would reign supreme.
Yet last night, the reigning World and European champions showed they have world quality youngsters coming through capable of maintaining their period of domination both domestically and abroad.
Players like Isco, Thiago and David de Gea all shone in the 4-2 win over the Azzurri and proved that if the likes of Xavi, Iniesta and Iker Casillas are on their way out, they are more than capable of taking their places.
And, as the...

According to the Sun, Manchester United are now the favourites to sign Barcelona wonderkid Thiago Alcantara.
The 22-year-old midfielder has been watched by United officials and after a long three years scouting Thiago, it finally looks like he could be on his way to Old Trafford.
The Red Devils are currently battling it out against rivals Manchester City for the Spaniard but with the Premier League champions set to make a bid of £15 million, they are confident they could see off any threat from The Sky Blues.
The young Spaniard has a release clause of just €18 million up to the end of July, so if Manchester United are serious with their interest they would benefit from making a bid at sometime in the next month.
It is currently unclear whether Thiago would want to leave La Liga Champions Barcelona but teammate and former Manchester United star Gerard Pique has pleaded...
