For this week’s column I’m going to talk about two books that I’ve read recently, both of which I enjoyed although they are vastly dissimilar. The books are The Minor Adjustment Beauty Salon by Alexander McCall Smith (published by Pantheon) and Steelheart by Brandon Sanderson (published by Delacorte Press). Both of them are series books: the former is the fourteenth and latest in the No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series and the latter is the first in a planned Reckoners series.
The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series takes place in Botswana, which is in southern Africa, and the series follows the agency’s founder, Mma Precious Ramotswe and her friends, family, and co-workers as she solves small mysteries. Nothing is huge in these novels – the main mystery of the new book is about someone who is slandering the owner of the beauty salon in the title – but its very warm.

The Hugo Awards celebrate the best in science fiction each year, and in 2013 the annual awards ceremony did just that. "Game of Thrones" and "The Avengers" both took home awards for the television and movie categories.
The "Game of Thrones" Season 2 episode "Blackwater" won the award for Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form. It beat out the likes of three episodes of "Doctor Who" ("The Angels Take Manhattan," "Asylum of the Daleks" and "The Snowmen") and one episode of "Fringe" ("Letters of Transit"). In 2012, "Game of Thrones" Season 1 won the Best Dramatic Presentation, Long Form, while a "Doctor Who" episode won Short Form.
This year, it was films that dominated the Long Form category. Joss Whedon's "The Avengers" beat out "The Hunger Games," "The Cabin in the Woods," The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" and "Looper" for the title.

Introduction
Welcome to the first in my series of New Doctor Who reviews. I will be re-watching the entire series and posting an episode-by-episode review that looks a little more thoroughly at each episode.
Why am I doing this? Well, let me start with some explanation of the way my mind works. I had an excellent English teacher in 11-12th grade who taught me focus by assigning me to watch one movie. Then I was assigned to select one five minute scene and write a 10-page paper just on those five minutes.
As a result, I gained the superpower of looking at something and reading Everything into it. Even when it’s not intentional. I’m serious. I went to a book signing by Brandon Sanderson and the person in front of me told him that she bought his books so her children could enjoy a series without having...

Two weeks from now Sdcc 2013 will be winding down, so are there enough horror offerings to entice attendees back to the show for Day 4 (July 21)? With "Supernatural" kicking things off bright and early, we say, "Yes!"
Also on the schedule for Sunday (traditionally the family-themed day of the event) are "Under the Dome," an update on the adaptation of George R.R. Martin's werewolf/Pi/serial killer mashup novella The Skin Trade, a chance to build your own monster, surviving in a post-apocalyptic world, a Neil Gaiman Spotlight panel, a look at what's coming from Diamond Select Toys, a how-to on creating suspenseful, exciting, anxiety-inducing stories, and per usual, a screening of "Buffy the Musical: Once More with Feeling" to close things out.
Since the horror offerings are so light, we've expanded our Day 4 highlights list to cover such topics as the future of sci-fi novels, the 50th anniversary of "Doctor Who,...

So fantasy, after all, is not just for geeks. With the blockbuster that has been the HBO adaptation of George R.R Martin’s fantasy series, A Song of Ice and Fire, suddenly the world of elves, magic and dragons are cool. Sexy, even.
A Game of Thrones may have done the impossible; improved upon an already excellent series of books. So often the most exquisitely detailed adaptations fall short of reader’s expectations, particularly in the fantasy genre. But my own version of Westeros wasn’t that far different to HBO’s- and I think the sex scenes are even better in the TV series.
I remember reading A Game of Thrones some five years ago now. I liked but didn’t love the books, and arduously made my way through the series in a relatively noncommittal way. I was on A Feast For Crows by the time the TV show came out.

Back in late 1989, Tor Books began a huge promotion for Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series. Contracted as far back as 1984 to write a traditional trilogy, publisher Tom Doherty already knew Jordan –based on previous novels Tor had published with the author- that he had a tendency to go long. So they signed him to a six volume deal instead. It was Doherty who deemed the series the next Lord of the Rings, and pushed the book hard, mostly by sending out Advanced Readers Copies to almost every bookstore on the planet. But the strategy succeeded and on January 15, 1990, Eye of the World was released. It quickly became a best seller, with fans asking when the next book was coming out. And Jordan did keep a great pace, writing as fast as he could, releasing the second book only eight months later. Books three through six were released roughly a year apart after that.

When we spoke with Garret Dillahunt back in 2010, Raising Hope (TV) was just getting off the ground. Now, almost two years later, the show is a bonafied success. Thanks to a great writing staff and a stellar cast that also includes Martha Plimpton, Lucas Neff, Cloris Leachman, Shannon Marie Woodward and Gregg Binkley, the show received two Emmy nominations in it's first season and a nod from TV Guide who called it "A treat for anyone who loves a good call-back to classic sit-coms." Garret has played a pivotal part in the show's success as Hope's grandfather Burt Chance. His humorously quirky portrayal of Burt (opposite Plimpton's Virginia Chance) has captured the hearts (and laughs) of America as they tune in each week to see what zany antics await the Chance family. During his hiatus from the show, Garret has set out to do what he loves best...diversify. He...

HBO has announced they’ve picked up Game of Thrones for a third season. According to the pay cable network, the second season of the fantasy series has attracted 8.3 million viewers and is poised to surpass the Season 1 average of 9.3 million viewers.
It’s also been reported, though not fully confirmed, that the third novel season three will be based on, A Storm of Swords, will be split into two seasons. There are some advantages to this, of course. It enables the series to expand the story by not sacrificing so much of the original 973 page novel. But it also, perhaps, gives author George R.R. Martin some breathing room, as he is notoriously slow, but highly detailed writer. He has said that the original idea of his A Song of Ice and Fire was a trilogy, before it was expanded to 7 novels. Now their are claims that Martin will need...

This book was marvelous. It caught my interest from the very beginning with the author’s unique use of magic. The world created in Mistborn isn’t entirely original, as many fantasy books involve a land where there is an evil ruler who oppresses a lower class, but in Mistborn it’s the abilities the characters have and how they use these abilities to bring down their oppressor that brings a new twist to this formula. It also helps that Sanderson brings his characters to life in such a way that you can’t help but care what happens to them.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with the author, Brandon Sanderson is the man who is working on the last couple of books in the Wheel of Time series. A man who has garnered the trust of Robert Jordan must be pretty awesome, right? Still, if that...

The Black Prism
Lightbringer Book 1
By Brent Weeks
Hardcover | Paperback | Kindle
Orbit
Release Date: August 25, 2010
The Black Prism marks a new series for fantasy writer Brent Weeks, this one called the Lightbringer series. In the first volume, Gavin Guile is a powerful and imposing emperor who is also the Prism, but he finds out that he has a son, and he has to protect him from his enemies. Weeks’ strength is definitely in world-building, and this book proves no exception, featuring a unique magic system that relies on colors and the perceptions of color to indicate the strength of a mage. Kip is the previously mentioned bastard son of Guile, and starts off with a unique voice in the narrative.
Description is another of Weeks’ strengths, and he integrates it well with the plot, characterization, and dialogue. For fans of epic fantasy that isn’t pseudo-medieval or sword and sorcery inspired,...

Description is another of Weeks’ strengths, and he integrates it well with the plot, characterization, and dialogue. For fans of epic fantasy that isn’t pseudo-medieval or sword and sorcery inspired,...

I had not read Brandon Mull’s Fablehaven series of fantasy books for young readers, but like much that has come out since the rise of Harry Potter, you knew it was going to fall somewhere between that series and the more adult fantasy of say J.R.R. Jack Campbell is the pseudonym for John G. Hemry, a retired Naval officer and graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis. As Jack Campbell, he writes The Lost Fleet series of military science fiction novels. He also wrote the Stark’s War and Paul Sinclair series under his real name.
Often compared to Battlestar Galactica and StarGate Universe, The Lost Fleet follows Captain John “Black Jack” Geary and the stranded Alliance fleet as they retreat home across the enemy star system. The first three books in the series – Dauntless, Fearless, and Courageous – have been released in paperback in the UK by Titan Books, who very kindly sent us a copy of Dauntless for review. So impressed were we by the book, that we tracked down author Jack Campbell for an interview.
1. Dauntless throws the reader right in at the deep end, starting with the aftermath of a pitched battle.
