If the biggest, hookiest songs of 2023 are united by anything, it’s the insurgents who made them. For one, English singer PinkPantheress made good on her underground fandom with a remix of “Boy’s a Liar,” featuring raspy-voiced female rapper of the moment Ice Spice, whose eye-rolling attitude ingeniously cuts against her own unguardedly emotional pop minimalism.
Others similarly subverted expectations of what makes a hit. Troye Sivan ditched his moody bedroom-pop roots for unashamedly horny bangers that confront our collective hang-ups about what a gay artist should deliver. The aggro sonic hijinks of hyperpop duo 100 gecs coalesced into something strangely beautiful and profound, especially on “Hollywood Baby,” a satire of Barbie-fied showbiz aspirations that’s at least partly aimed at themselves.

Paul Wall and Termanology are back where they first met, at Brooklyn’s Hub Studios. Before our hourlong conversation starts, various people in their circle shuffle by Termanology’s studio room to greet Wall, the amiable Texan who’s visiting the city to promote the deluxe edition of Start Finish Repeat, their second collaborative project.
Wall is clad in all-black attire, including a Houston Texans hoodie. Lounging on a couch before the interview starts, his demeanor is as chill as his beaming platinum grill looks. Lawrence, Massachusetts, native Termanology is similarly showing hometown pride,...

Shortly after rapper That Mexican Ot takes the head of the table in a private room at Manhattan’s Bowery Meat Company, he inquires about a waiter and announces, “I’m hangry!” If his “hanger” is anything like mine, I worry it could hinder our conversation. But his friend (and “Johnny Dang” costar) DRODi jokes with him and Ot immediately grins, flaunting the full luster of his shiny grill. If this is his version of hunger pangs, I think, we’re in good shape.

Gary Nelson, who directed the Disney films Freaky Friday and The Black Hole, served as the in-house helmer on the first two seasons of Get Smart and called the shots for scores of other shows, has died. He was 87.
Nelson died May 25 in Las Vegas of natural causes, his son Garrett Nelson told The Hollywood Reporter.
His father was Sam Nelson, who served as an assistant director on such landmark films as The Lady From Shanghai (1947), All the King’s Men (1949), Some Like It Hot (1959) and Experiment in Terror (1962) and was a co-founder, along with King Vidor and others, of what would become the DGA.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you haven’t watched Season 1 of “Mo” on Netflix.
As I finish interviewing comedian Mo Amer and ask him if there’s anything else he’d like to talk about, he says, “I don’t have a lean addiction, nor have I ever been addicted to lean. I keep saying that every chance I can, because it gets weird out here.”
It’s an important distinction to make, as the mixture of prescription cough syrup, soda and candy has killed many, especially in Houston, where Amer grew up. He is the co-creator, executive producer and star of “Mo,” a comedy-drama series that heavily draws from his true experiences as a refugee — his parents were displaced from Palestine to Kuwait where Amer was born, before the whole family fled to Texas during the Gulf War. Several of the show’s most painful moments — like when,...

Netflix’s new series Mo begins almost like The Sopranos. We see a heavyset figure (the comedian Mo Amer) drive to work. The shots alternate between Mo, smoking a cigarette and bopping to the sounds of “Sittin’ Sidewayz” by Paul Wall and Big Pokey, and half-glimpsed shots of the world he passes – not New Jersey but Houston, Texas. He arrives at work (a tech repair shop) and is abruptly sacked, amid fears that the business will be targeted in an immigration crackdown (Mo is a Palestinian refugee). Later in the episode, he is caught up in a random shooting at a supermarket; he gets a bullet in the arm but, uninsured, he refuses to go to hospital. Does this sound much like comedy to you?
Obviously not, you might think. But Mo is not your traditional sitcom. Created by Amer and comedian Ramy Youssef, the eight-episode series, which draws from...

Late in the first episode of Netflix’s Mo, the title character (played by Mo Amer, who also co-created the series with Ramy Youssef) gets shot while shopping for cat food. Well, grazed — he’ll be fine once he’s treated at the hospital, the paramedics reassure him. Mo panics, as freaked out by the prospect of running up a medical bill without health insurance as he is by the fact of what’s actually happened to him. Meanwhile, the jaded EMTs bicker over his gurney about whether the shooting counts as “mass” if only four people were hit, including the shooter.
The scene feel darkly funny and a touch surreal, in the way the most harrowing moments of real life often do. It’s a distinctive example of what Mo does so well. Over eight half-hour episodes, the dramedy keeps itself afloat...

The late, great Adolph Robert Thornton Jr. spent his entire rap career campaigning to be the King of Memphis, through his soul-stirring music and a selfless generosity to his community that felt as large as the signature diamond-encrusted Paper Route Empire dolphin that stayed around his neck. On a warm and somber day, Dec. 16 — nearly a month after his life was tragically cut short — Young Dolph’s life was celebrated in royal fashion at Memphis’ FedEx Forum, in a building full of family, peers, friends, and supporters from all across Tennessee.

Birdman and Juvenile reunite with Lil Wayne for their smooth new song “Ride Dat.” The track, produced by Cash Money Records’ in-house producer DRoc, finds the trio exchanging verses over pillowy jazz piano, DJ scratches and a laid-back, sub-bass-heavy beat.
Lil Wayne pops up in the final section, firing off pop culture references through thick auto-tune. “Ride this dick — don’t fall, baby/ Sippin’ lean like Paul Wall, baby,” he rhymes.
“Ride Dat” marks the first time the three rappers have recorded together following Cash Money producer Mannie Fresh’s 2016 cut “Hate.

John D. Tucker, Director Pas Honteux
Directed by John D. Tucker Pas Honteux is the story of a young African American slacker who wakes up one day speaking only French. The film brings to light the fact that we not only judge people by their looks but also by the way they speak.
So, what if a young urban African American wakes up and suddenly speaks only French?
The film begins and takes off from there and must be seen to be believed. It jumps from modern hip-hop inspired visuals to sharp contrast new wave bringing new meaning to both styles of filmmaking.
It turns out that the only person he can now communicate with is an older homeless street dwelling man who can speak French to him and they bond.
The film stars Travis Labranch (Shots Fired), Leon Lamar, and Javicia Leslie, is written by Sundance Alum Marcus J.

Like it or not, Miley Cyrus is not going anywhere anytime soon. The "We Can't Stop" singer will continue to be in your face with headline-making news for as long as she is promoting her new album -- or, as long as she keeps tweeting photos of her rear end.
Since there are many buzzwords associated with the 20-year-old pop icon that may not be familiar to everyone, Zap2it decided to save you the trouble of delving into internet research when you should be working, and explain things like "twerking," "dancing with Molly," "ratchet culture" and "big booty hoes" below. (You're welcome.)
Twerking: The Oxford English Dictionary officially describes the verb "twerk" as dancing "to popular music in a sexually provocative manner involving thrusting hip movements and a low, squatting stance." Miley herself says it's a dance with "a lot of booty."

Jill Scott hit the 2013 Essence Festival stage Friday night and like you'd expect she dazzled the crowd with her sultry voice and heartfelt tunes. But the Grammy Award-winning singer, who was dressed in a mint green jumpsuit and a colorful printed wrap, decided to add an extra dose of shine via a gold grill.

"My grill is intended to be discreet," Jill said during a press conference after her performance. "It's there because I enjoy jewelry."
The glitzy dental accessories are adored by rappers not R&B songstresses like Jill. But we've gotta say, she looked dope with the flash of solid gold covering her bottom row of teeth. And the 41-year-old said she has several of the Paul Wall-designed baubles.
"I've been enjoying playing with fashion--gold grills and diamond grills have just become a part of that," Jill said.
And when asked what has influenced her style,...

Why are so many stars getting busted for pot in a tiny town in Texas? What are Fiona Apple and Armie Hammer doing out there in the desert to begin with? —B.T. Cruel, via Facebook You speak of Sierra Blanca, a tiny town, as you put it, which sits about 85 miles east of El Paso. The town also has witnessed the arrests of stars ranging from Fiona Apple and Armie Hammer to Snoop Dogg, Willie Nelson and Paul Wall. And I found out why. Sierra Blanca, in Hudspeth County, Texas, is a hub for two things: Drug trafficking and celebrity trafficking. The town is about 20 miles from the Mexican border, which is why there's a U.S. Customs and Border Protection checkpoint sitting there. That checkpoint...

Houston, Texas' Marcus Manchild is talented enough to make it in rap without any co-signs, but a little love from a couple of hometown heroes never hurt anyone.
Marcus, who appeared in a Get in the Game segment on "RapFix Live" back in September, is getting ready to drop his Space Jams 2 mixtape. While Manchild is still a relative newcomer, he has been learning lessons from a couple of Og's — Slim Thug and Paul Wall — for quite some time now.
"I kinda like guide him, give him a little game, what to do, what not to do," Thugga told Mixtape Daily of his relationship with Manchild. "It's just like family, man, we just want...
