A significant subplot of Quentin Tarantino's ninth feature, Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood, involves the offer of work to fading movie stars from the Italian film business, where a few got lucky and reinvigorated their careers and others merely paid the rent or tarnished their reputations, if any. This notion is certainly not one of Q.T.'s notorious counter-historical plot turns: Italy had been offering opportunities to Hollywood and European flotsam since the fifties. In the era of Il Boom, the post-war economic miracle, filmmakers, including actors, were offered a great deal: they could live and work in Italy tax-free for a year. Projects were not only re-written to take advantage of this possibility, they were conceived for it: it's uncertain Roman Holiday would exist without the big tax break incentive. For actors, there was clearly another consideration, beyond the big, or at least tax-exempt, bucks and...

William Wyler and a trio of fantastic actors make indelible movie history from a grim story by Henry James. How much of love is bald opportunism? How many successes married their way into money? And what’s a lovesick woman to do when a beau may not be true? This may be the key Wyler picture, with the strongest ‘staircase’ scene of them all.

Audrey Hepburn made less than 20 films during her legendary career, but they were so beloved — Roman Holiday, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Sabrina, to name a few — that she became one of Hollywood’s most beloved and enduring stars.
But there was one role she was never able to play: that of Anne Frank.
While Hepburn never met Frank, they lived parallel lives. They were the same age, lived just 60 miles apart, and suffered the horror of the German occupation of Holland, notes Robert Matzen in his new book Dutch Girl: Audrey Hepburn and World War II, excerpted exclusively in this week’s People.

The Admirable Crichton
Blu ray
Twilight Time
1957 / 1:85:1 / 94 Min. / Street Date – February 12, 2019
Starring Kenneth More, Sally Ann Howes
Cinematography by Wilkie Cooper
Directed by Lewis Gilbert
True love and the British Empire collide in 1957’s The Admirable Crichton, the riches to rags story of one hard-to-get butler and a boatload of love struck aristocrats.
Loam Manor is run with steely officiousness by the valet known simply as Crichton, a kindly martinet who views the class system as the crowning achievement of British society – a notion which not coincidentally coincides with Crichton’s dominance over the servant’s quarters.
The Loams themselves, three spoon-fed sisters and their dithering father are naturally spoiled rotten, viewing their stable of servants as an exotic species to be kept on invisible leashes – in such a fraught situation the tables are just begging to be turned. And so they are when the Lord’s ship sinks,...

Julia Roberts delivers a career-best performance as she falls for Hugh Grant in this enduringly lovely, warm-hearted romcom
Watching this Valentine’s Day rerelease of Notting Hill 20 years on is an unexpectedly complicated experience. Kicking off with Elvis Costello’s great cover of Burt Bacharach’s She, it’s a lovely warm-hearted romantic comedy, as well as being an elegant homage to Roman Holiday (complete with the press conference scene at the end) written by Richard Curtis and starring Hugh Grant as shy bookshop owner William and Julia Roberts as Anna, the Hollywood movie star he falls for. This film is still her career best to date, and Notting Hill is incidentally superior to the previous Four Weddings and a Funeral, which some assume to be better because it’s got death and Wh Auden and is therefore supposedly more profound. Roberts’s “I’m just a girl” scene, endlessly mocked,...

So, we asked some of the popular actors and directors from Telugu film industry to name their favourite romantic films. Here’s what they said. Roman Holiday – Samantha, Actor I was in class 10 when I watched Roman Holiday for the first time. Back then, we had a Vcr at home and I must have seen the film at least 20-30 times. Okay, it's not earth-shaking, but So Young, So Bad (1950) kept me watching, sometimes goggling. It's the penultimate film of quota quickie master Bernard "Mad" Vorhaus, who made cheap and often very skilled work in the U.K., moved to the U.S. and made The Amazing Mr. X, a really stylish and entertaining thriller shot by the great John Alton, then made this, and got blacklisted the following year. He had already left the U.S., having seen the way the wind was blowing, but aside from shooting second unit on William Wyler's Roman Holiday, Vorhaus made only one more movie, an Italian flick called Finishing School which seems to be impossible to get at present. He went into house renovation back in the U.K. and did alright at it, I believe. So, one doesn't necessarily expect earth-shaking from a B-movie talent like Vorhaus, but he was capable of splendid work,...

The Collector
Blu ray – All Region
Indicator/Powerhouse
1965/ 1.85:1 / Street Date September 24, 2018
Starring Terence Stamp, Samantha Eggar
Cinematography by Robert Surtees, Robert Krasker
Directed by William Wyler
German-born William Wyler was a storyteller who asked the audience not to understand him too quickly. A notorious perfectionist, he was a masterful old-school director of enduring entertainments distinguished by thoughtfulness and, a rare trait for the times, ambiguity.
At their best, Wyler’s films were acutely observed slices of American life, particularly concerning its ongoing civil wars – Davis treading on Southern decorum in Jezebel, Dana Andrew’s bitter post-war abasement in The Best Years of Our Lives and the deal-breaking social gulf between the would-be lovers of Roman Holiday. In The Collector, those class conflicts get the horror movie treatment.
Frederick Clegg, the gaunt loner lurking at the edges of Wyler’s psycho-thriller, is the very model of the modern Incel. Emotionally...
