One of the stats of the 2023 Wta season showcased Iga Swiatek's unwavering dominance that cemented her spot as the world's top-ranked woman for the second year in a row.
Swiatek won Roland Garros for a third time in June thanks to an epic win over first-time Grand Slam finalist Karolina Muchova in three pulsating sets. She extended her unbeaten streak in Grand Slam finals to 4-0 and is now part of a very exclusive list of players to achieve this feat.
The 22-year-old from Warsaw is just the third Wta player in the Open Era and fourth overall across both tours to win their first four Grand Slams finals. Swiatek has won more French Opens than Maria Sharapova and Martina Navratilova and has drawn level with Serena Williams.

Recently, Nick Kyrgios made an interesting statement that got many former tennis players, and tennis coaches talking.
Currently absent from the Atp Tour, the Australian has spent some time doing media duties, talking to multiple publications and appearing on numerous podcasts while recovering from an injury.
On one of those appearances, Kyrgios said that Novak Djokovic would destroy the likes of Pete Sampras, claiming that many former tennis greats would struggle in this era.
However, many quickly started discussing whether Kyrgios' comments were fair since eras are difficult to compare, and one of the former players who jumped in was Boris Becker, who immediately called out the Australian's "credibility."
But he wasn't the only one, as Serena Williams' former coach and former doubles world no. 1, Rennae Stubbs, also commented on the matter, supporting Becker's claims about eras being incomparable.

Iga Swiatek has joined an illustrious list of Wta legends who have previously won the Player of the Year award for at least two consecutive years.
The Polish player was recently crowned the 2023 Wta Player of the Year after another stellar season saw her reign supreme at the summit of women's tennis. It wasn't all plain sailing in 2023 as she fended off multiple challengers for the ultimate crown and briefly lost her No.1 ranking.
The Wta Player of the Year is an award reserved for the best-performing player on tour at the end of every season, and Swiatek deservedly checked this box once again. She won six titles, the most for any woman in singles last season, and finished year-end No. 1 for the second time.
The 22-year-old beat Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff, Marketa Vondrousova, Elena Rybakina, and Jessica Pegula to the award. It marks the second time she has pulled...

In the 1990s, it was common to see pro players and high level amateur players requesting very high string tensions, with most stringing well above 60lbs or even 70lbs, and some crossing the 75 and 80lbs line.
But today, many professional players request the opposite. It’s common to see pro players with tensions well below 50lbs, with some players like John Isner and Jack Sock stringing at an incredibly low 35lbs. So what’s changed?
Put simply, the string material has evolved. In the 1990s, most pro players used Natural Gut or multifilament strings in their rackets, which had great elastic properties, but poor levels of control. While this was less of an issue for competitive tennis in most of the 20th century, mainstream advancements in racket technology during the 1980s made the game more powerful, and the old- fashioned gut strings simply couldn’t keep up.

Iga Swiatek is racking up achievements by the day, and it's becoming increasingly clear that she's on a path to becoming one of the all-time greats.
Such terms have always been and always will be highly subjective, but you can't deny some of the things Swiatek has been doing. Eras are not comparable in tennis, but that shouldn't take away from any achievement a player has.
For example, Iga Swiatek did something that some other legendary players also did but at a younger age. Does that make it less impressive? Does that detract from his achievement? No, and it shouldn't because it's not something that's not easily done, at any point in tennis history.
By finishing the 2023 season as the highest-ranked player on the Wta Tour, she became the 6th youngest woman to finish back-to-back as year-end No. 1. It almost didn't happen as she needed a spectacular finish to the year to get it done,...

Former Wta doubles No. 1 Pam Shriver is a fan of craft and improvisation, but she has warmly embraced "knockdown, drag-out power clash" while watching one-dimensional players.
This year's Australian Open women's final was billed as the clash of the heavyweights between Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina . Two hyper-aggressive players of first-strike tennis who want to destroy every ball in sight.
While watching the final in which Sabalenka captured her maiden Grand Slam singles title with a comeback victory, Shriver admitted to being won over by the relentless nature of the fast and furious style. She talked of Sabalenak and Rybakina being in the same bracket as retired Wta stars like Monica Seles and Jennifer Capriati.
Seles and Capriati embody the one-dimensional but often incredibly efficient power game. And this couldn't be more true than watching the 1991 semifinal between them at the US Open, that avid fans can recall to this very day.

For the first time in 11 years, two American players will be in the Top 10 on the Atp Tour as Frances Tiafoe is set to join Taylor Fritz .
American tennis history is long as the country produced many legendary players, some born in the United States like the McEnroe brothers, Pete Sampras, Chris Evert, and many others while some that adopted the flag like Martina Navratilova and Monica Seles. In the past two decades though, US tennis hasn't been what it used to be, at least on the men's side.
It's been better in recent years with the likes of Fritz, Tiafoe, Korda, Paul and others. Taylor Fritz was the first of those to make a huge breakthrough as he won the 2022 Indian Wells Masters by beating Rafael Nadal in the final. Rome, May 21 (Ians) Elena Rybakina won her second Wta 1000 title of the year after an ailing Anhelina Kalinina retired during the second set of their Italian Open final on late Saturday night, here.
Rybakina registered a 6-4, 1-0 win after Kalinina retired from the final due to a left thigh injury.
After rain backed up play for much of the day, No.7 seed Rybakina took the trophy when No.30 seed Kalinina was unable to continue after 65 minutes. Rybakina had lost to Kalinina in their only previous meeting, on the clay courts of Charleston last year.
“Of course, I’m happy with the title. Not the way I want to finish this match,” Rybakina said in her post-match press conference.
“It’s been great, I think, results for Anhelina. She played some tough battles. Really happy for her improvement. Hopefully she can continue like this. Pity she couldn’t finish the match.

Carlos Alcaraz has proven himself to be very mentally tough and according to former player Monica Seles, it's as good as that of Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.
One year ago Alcaraz was touted as a pretty big talent in tennis that has a chance to become great. Fast forward to today, we're already talking in superlatives when it comes to the Spaniard and it's quite clear that he's not even peaked yet.
It's not a surprise because it comes after he put forward a superbly impressive year, one that we haven't seen from a youngster in quite a while. The world has become so used to the same players dominating in tennis that most of us kind of forgot that it's possible for a new shiny thing to emerge.
That proved to be Alcaraz and many were enamoured by what he was always to show on a tennis court.

Melbourne, Jan 18 (Ians) World No 1 Iga Swiatek of Poland has soared into the third round of the Australian Open, overcoming a pair of late-set stumbles here at Rod Laver Arena to dismiss Colombian Camila Osorio.
Swiatek closed out a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Osorio in 84 minutes to win her 12th straight second-round match at a major. The Pole star hasn’t lost before the third round of a major since the 2019 US Open.
Swiatek has now won 53 of her first 65 main-draw Grand Slam singles matches. In the Open Era, only six players had more such wins after their first 65 matches in majors: Margaret Court (61), Monica Seles (60), Chris Evert (57), Martina Hingis (56), Billie Jean King (56) and Tracy Austin (54).
Osorio’s abilities to hyperextend rallies and change the direction of the ball down the line at a moment’s notice allowed her to hang with the World No.1 in a number of close games.

Bollettieri died Sunday night at home in Florida after a series of health issues, his manager, Steve Shulla, said in a telephone interview with the Associated Press on Monday.

New York, Sep 11 (Ians) Polish tennis star and world No. 1 Iga Swiatek added a third Grand Slam singles trophy to her cupboard, defeating Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur 6-2, 7-6 (5) to win the US Open crown for the first time on Sunday (Ist).
Following Ashleigh Barty’s surprise retirement in March this year, Swiatek was thrust into the role of No.1 at the age of 20 then, but she has since handled the pressure very well, proceeding to win 37 straight matches, including the French Open.
On Sunday at the Flushing Meadows, rather than being intimidated by the No.1 ranking, the Polish tennis ace — now 21 years old — seemed quite inspired.
“I needed to stay composed and focus on the goals,” Swiatek was quoted as saying by Wta. “It’s New York — it’s so loud, it’s so crazy. It’s really mind-blowing for me. I’m really proud I could handle it mentally.

DonateStock, an innovative fintech company transforming charitable giving, has partnered with nonprofit foundations supported by Bode Miller, Monica Seles and Elisabeth Hasselbeck to increase their fundraising efforts this #GivingTuesday.
Traditionally, charitable giving has been confined to cash or a complex stock gifting process that hindered nonprofit fundraising potential. By donating stock, via DonateStock.com, nonprofits keep a larger percent of the proceeds and donors make a larger impact while avoiding capital gains tax.
Bode Miller started The Turtle Ridge Foundation which supports adaptive and youth sports programs. “The Foundation seeks to provide a philanthropic platform in the community, support youth & adaptive sports programs and offer the opportunity for our disabled community and young people to participate in a variety of sports and recreational activities that would not be available to them without our help,” said Bode Miller. “We’re glad to partner with DonateStock and expand gifting so we can do more for the community.

Jason Kohn’s documentary “Love Means Zero” is a film about tennis, but at it is also a kind of match in itself, in which the filmmaker serves and volleys and probes for weaknesses in the implacable foe on the other side of the net. That foe, in a way, is also the subject of “Love Means Zero”: Nick Bollettieri, the controversial tennis instructor whose Florida academy taught such luminaries as Jim Courier, Maria Sharapova, Monica Seles, Mary Pierce and most of all Andre Agassi, whose relationship with Bollettieri began when he was barely in his teens, reached heights of glory.

Monica Seles might have made tennis look like a breeze while she was on the court, but she struggled in other aspects of her life: her eating habits. The tennis star opened up to People about her binge eating disorder and how it ultimately led her to partner up with the Binge Eating Disorder Association and National Eating Disorders Association to create a public service announcement about the disease. "It took a while until I felt comfortable talking about it," she told the magazine. "That's one of the reasons I decided to do this campaign: to raise awareness that binge eating is a real medical condition." The 41-year-old athlete attributed her struggle to dealing with the pressures of...

Monica Seles has talked about her struggle with Binge Eating Disorder in the past, but she's hoping to spread her message even more widely with a new public service announcement in conjunction with the Binge Eating Disorder Association and National Eating Disorders Association. "It took a while until I felt comfortable talking about it," she tells People. "That's one of the reasons I decided to do this campaign: to raise awareness that binge eating is a real medical condition." Seles, 41, says she developed the disorder as an adult while dealing with pressures of being an athlete and her dad's battle with prostate cancer,...

Lena Dunham is on today's "B.S. Report," where she talks about her obsession with the Old Loves Tumblr (join the club), a deep enduring love for Brad Renfro (join the club), and a few of her dream projects. She says she'd love to direct one of Espn's "30 for 30" docs, perhaps about women's tennis, since she's a fan. Bill Simmons pitched her Monica Seles's stabbing, or maybe the relationship between Chris Evert and Jimmy Connors, either of which could be great, though Seles seems more intriguing, because there's already an Evert-Navratilova installment. Dunham also says she dreams of guest-starring on other shows. "My life's great passion is the idea of being a guest star on Scandal," she says. "I want to be like, a senator who did something wrong." She admits that she's probably not "technically allowed to" be on another show, but surely there's a way to get around that.

The debate over the best television comedy of all time rages constantly. Is it I Love Lucy? Is it 30 Rock? Is it Small Wonder? Valid choices all, but in the eyes of many, the king of the debate is and will always remain Seinfeld.
It’s tough to argue that choice. In terms of popularity, legacy, and influence over the public sense of humor, Seinfeld has few legitimate rivals. The show spawned famous catchphrases on a weekly basis, more than we probably even know because they have become so pervasive that they seem to be from life, not from Seinfeld, and it exalted the constant judgmental dissection of insignificance as the great worthwhile venture of our age.
Seinfeld’s finest triumph, though, was its refreshing doctrine of “no hugging, no learning.” No one had to do the right thing or grow, and there was a realism and comfort in that.

Maybe these too should stick to their day jobs. Actors Rainn Wilson and Jason Biggs headed to New York City this week for the annual U.S. Open. Instead of watching the fierce competition from the stands, the twosome decided to practice their tennis skills by competing in a special exhibition match of their own. Pitted against seasoned pros Chris Evert and Monica Seles, the funnyguys tried to keep up in their professional shirts, high socks and supershort shorts. But to nobody's surprise, it appears this game wasn't exactly too close to call. At least they looked good trying. Tennis fan Amanda Seyfried also ventured to the east to cheer on Andy Murray in his final match...

Oh, come on! Another awards show for movie stars after the Oscars? You gotta be kidding! Well, not quite. Despite the attendance of stars like Gwyneth Paltrow, Clive Owen, Hugh Grant and Michelle Rodriguez—who had her trademark leather jacket on over her gown, you go Michelle—Abu Dhabi’s Laureus Awards celebrated the accomplishments of our world’s greatest athletes, including Tony Hawk, Monica Seles and Julius Irving. Who knew Kevin Spacey and Kyle MacLachlan had such love for the game? Or, for that matter, the United Arab Emirates?

"Dancing with the Stars" pro Lacey Schwimmer will not be part of the show's 10th season.
Schwimmer, a former "So You Think You Can Dance" contestant and veteran of three "Dwts" seasons, tweeted over the weekend that she won't be on the ABC show this spring. Whatever the circumstances of her departure, she doesn't seem to have any hard feelings toward "Dancing" -- she wrote, "Hey twitterbugs! I will not be doing Dwts this season. But be sure to tune in! <3"
She's the second professional dancer to confirm they won't be part of the new season; Jonathan Roberts also let the world know via Twitter that he won't be taking part.
Schwimmer paired up with "Iron Chef America" host Mark Dacascos in the fall; she previously danced with Lance Bass and Steve-o. Roberts has partnered with Marie Osmond, Belinda Carlisle and Monica Seles.

You'd never know it based on media coverage, but one of the most exciting tennis tournaments in ages is currently happening right now in Melbourne, Australia. The Australian Open is typically difficult for Americans to follow because it's happening on the opposite side of the Earth, but so far, there have been a handful of upsets and some excellent performances from Justine Henin and top seed Serena Williams.
Back in 1996, the Australian Open served as the stage for an emotional comeback for Monica Seles, who was crowned champion of the tournament on this day 14 years ago. Not only was it the ninth Grand Slam win for the 22-year-old Seles, but it was her first since getting stabbed in the middle of a match in one of the most harrowing incidents in the history of organized sports. By Andreas Joseph. Last week, Manhattan's upper crust ventured downtown to the downstairs Vault at Cipriani Wall Street for a party that benefited the Institute for Civic Leadership, a nonprofit that offers inspiration and education to students to put them on the road to becoming global leaders. Tennis is all a twitter about the sounds emanating from the five-foot five-inch frame of Michelle Larcher De Brito, the 16-year-old tennis phenom from Portugal. Ms. Larcher De Brito's sounds, variously termed as "shrieks," "wails" and "grunts," have caused a kafuffle in professional tennis of John McEnroe proportions. Ranked 91st in the world, she qualified to play in her first Grand Slam tournament at the 2009 French Open and surprisingly prevailed in her first two matches before losing in the third round at Roland Garros. Although she apparently has future "winning chances" in women's tennis, her potential has been overshadowed by her current noise quotient. There have been other pro tennis stars who used sound effects to good effect. Maria Sharapova, Monica Seles and both Williams' sisters come to mind, but Larcher De Brito may be in a class...

Amid all the chaos in Albany, the upstate billionaire at the center of the state Senate upheaval yesterday coyly confirmed he's dating tennis great Monica Seles.
Buffalo Sabres owner and upstate king-maker Thomas Golisano, 67 -- credited with convincing two rogue Democratic senators to join forces with the Gop -- has been spotted for months squiring around Seles, 35.
When asked yesterday if the two were a pair, the normally unflappable Paychex founder -- who was making the interview rounds all over the state capital -- seemed taken aback.
"Why do you want to know?" said Golisano, clearly more comfortable talking policy than romance.

Former tennis ace and Dancing With The Stars contestant Monica Seles has spoken out for the first time about her lengthy battle with an eating disorder.
The 35-year-old began binge-eating soon after she was knifed in the shoulder by a fan during a match with Magdalena Maleeva in 1993.
She says, "Food became my best friend. I was lonely and I would just eat. It was my coping mechanism. Food was how I dealt with stress.”
But the star realised she had finally won her battle after appearing on the sixth season of hit U.S. TV series Dancing With The Stars in 2008, when even fierce criticism by the shows judges didn't tempt her to gorge on food.
She adds, "I cried - but I did not go back to my old habits.”...

The actor joins tennis ace Monica Seles and illusionist Penn Jillette, who became the first contestants axed from the hit TV show last week.
The stars still in with a shot at landing the dancing crown include actress Shannon Elizabeth, R+B star Mario and Priscilla Presley, who, at 62, is the show's oldest competitor.

Dancing with the Stars Judges. This week's double elimination result on Dancing with the Stars was hardly a surprise to anyone, since the two who got eliminated, Penn Jillette and Monica Seles, received the lowest scores from the judges. On the other hand, finding out that teenage singers like the Jonas Brothers can actually be entertaining, now that's a shocker!
But every week, the hosts of Dancing with the Stars, Tom Bergeron and Samantha Harris, are always reminding us that the judges' scores are not the only factors that go into figuring out who will be booted off, which is why we have to get off our couches and call or text in our votes. The question is, how do they combine the judges' scores and America's votes?
Let's put aside all thoughts of heel-leading and death spirals, and do some quick math. Remember to show your work, or you...

Monica Seles" src="http://www.buddytv.com/articles/Image/Dancing-with-the-Stars/DWTS6/031808-jonathan-monica.jpg" />Yesterday, I compiled a list of the best parts of the two-night Dancing with the Stars premiere. The noteworthy celebs and dancers mentioned were Kristi Yamaguchi and Mark Ballas for the best and highest-scoring performance, Tony Dovolani for the best—and also tackiest—outfit, Steve Guttenberg and Marissa Jaret Winokur were tied for having the best attitude, and I believe that Marlee Matlin and Jason Taylor have the best chance at winning.
That was yesterday, however. Today, we get to unleash our inner Schadenfreude and pick apart the worst of the first Dancing with the Stars performances.
Worst Performance
Based on the judges' scoring, Monica Seles and Adam Carolla are tied for last place with just 15 points apiece. But I disagree slightly with the judges here: I think that Monica and Penn Jillette should actually be tied for worst.
