Following the recent earthquakes in Japan, Shinkai’s Suzume no Tojimari anime film has managed to spark comparisons to the long-running American animated series, The Simpsons, which has gained cult following for its supposed ability to predict future events.
In the movie, Suzume, the titular character, begins her journey from Kyushu Island before visiting Ehime prefecture, as she chased a mischievous Daijin along with Souta, who had turned into a chair. Surprisingly, the 6.6 magnitude earthquake which hit Japan on April 17, 2024, stuck these two cities in same order of Suzume’s journey.
The peculiar coincidence was brought to light by a Twitter user who noticed a striking correlation between the seismic activity and the protagonist’s journey in the film. Posting two earthquake epicentral maps alongside screenshots from the movie, the user pointed out how the earthquakes occurred in the same order as the protagonist’s visit to the two cities.

Of all the American streaming services, Netflix is the one that relies most heavily on international projects. Its most critically and popularly acclaimed films and series are regularly projects originating in Europe, K- and J-dramas streamed on Netflix receive high ratings on review aggregators, and, of course, the company is betting big on anime.
Japanese animation arrived on the service in 2014, when Knights of Sidonia was announced as Netflix's first 'original' anime series, followed by many other original and licensed, failed and successful projects, as well as live-action adaptations from Death Note to One Piece, and now, 10 years later, the Netflix series Delicious in Dungeon has a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Essentially a vehicle for Yasuko Tomita, an idol singer and actress then at the height of her fame, to shine, Jun Ichikawa's debut “Bu Su” was still a successful film, netting the protagonist a Best Actress award in the Yokohama Film Festival, where it was also declared as the second best film of the year (after “The Emperor's Naked Army Marches On”). It also netted Masahiro Takashima numerous awards as first time actor, including one from the Japanese Academy.

Makoto Shinkai has etched his name among the fans’ minds with his movies. He delivered one of the greatest-ever anime movies, Your Name, in 2016. Since then, fans have had higher expectations from every movie that his name has been related to. His latest film to hit the theatres was Suzume. It was released in 2022 in Japan and had a worldwide release in 2023.
Regardless of the story, everyone was excited about the film since it was Makoto Shinkai’s creation. It was a fascinating watch, but only a few people know the true inspiration behind the creation of Suzume. The director was inspired by 2011’s Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, which was the most powerful earthquake in the history of Japan.

AnimeJapan 2024 marked the year that the biggest anime industry event in the world returned to a pre-pandemic “normal”: The business days were back, the adorable family space returned and the built-up pressure from years of cancellations has lifted. Every anime fan in the world probably knows who Hayao Miyazaki is. The director of Studio Ghibli has made many films that have earned international recognition and even won Academy Awards. He is one of the legends in the anime world and many creators have been inspired by him.

One such creator is Tatsuki Fujimoto, the mangaka of Chainsaw Man. During an interview with Shuiesha last year, Fujimoto was asked for his opinions about Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli. He had a lot to say about the studio and Miyazaki and also talked about his films that have changed the entire scene of the anime industry.
However, while talking about Miyazaki, Fujimoto pointed out one particular trait of the creator that makes him different from other filmmakers and directors. Fujimoto also stated that he believes that this trait would no longer be found in others.

To say that Suzume is one of the best anime movies to have ever been created wouldn’t be a lie considering the tremendous ratings the film has earned from almost all platforms. Encircling the life of a young teenager of the same name who sets out to save Japan through her ability to see supernatural forces, the 2022 masterpiece was a critically commended blockbuster.

The Golden Globes – and the Hollywood Foreign Press organization that runs them — continue to lean into the idea of them as a mysterious, shadowy cabal where no one is exactly certain of who votes for the winners. And while the ceremony has landed a proper US broadcast network this year in CBS, it's for a greatly reduced fee. And the clout of the awards themselves has certainly shrunk in recent years thanks to scandals and other issues. But they're rolling out again, and the nominations have arrived, with Barbie, Oppenheimer, The Holdovers and Killers Of The Flower Moon dominating the film side while the likes of Succession and The Bear garnered plenty of nominations on the TV front.
Barbie, as it has in so many other ways, ruled over all with the second-most nominations in Globes history (nine). On its heels, the likes of Killers Of The Flower Moon, Oppenheimer,...

In many of his recent films, director Makoto Shinkai has been influenced by the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. With Suzume, Shinkai wanted to create a film with a disaster backdrop, but have the story been structured in a more comedic way to engage a wider audience.
Suzume follows Suzume Iwato, a 17-year-old high school girl who meets a mysterious young man, Souta, that closes doors to the Ever-After before disasters can be released upon Japan. Her actions unintentionally lead to Souta being turned into a three-legged chair by the mischievous cat Daijin, leading Suzume on a journey to rescue Souta and prevent more disasters. A major comedic element Shinkai used in the film was Souta as the there-legged chair, which provided a relief to the tragedy of the film as he ran after the cat, Daijin.

On Monday, Cedric the Entertainer and Wilmer Valderrama announced the nominees for the 2024 Golden Globe Awards. They made the announcement live from the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles.
Among the 27 categories the two announced, there were some new ones: Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement as well as Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television.
The 81st Golden Globes will air on CBS (and stream on Paramount+) on Sunday, January 7, 2024, at 8 p.m. Et/5 p.m. Pt. The show will be produced by Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirschner; Weiss will direct.
The Golden Globes found a new home on CBS in November, after its longtime network NBC did not renew its contract with the group, which has been trying to reset since a Los Angeles Time exposé reported in April 2021 that there were zero Black members in the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and detailed numerous accusations of improper behavior within the organization.

This post contains spoilers for "Suzume."
Makoto Shinkai is one of the most popular filmmakers that some Americans may not know about. Three of the director's films — the animated fantasy-dramas "Your Name," "Weathering With You," and his latest, "Suzume" — are among the ten highest-grossing Japanese films in history, and each tell stories of young people in intensely emotional, strange situations, like switching bodies, controlling the weather, and preventing natural disasters using magic.
"Suzume," now on Crunchyroll, tells the story of a young girl who accidentally opens a door and unleashes a giant worm that only she and a college student, Souta, can see. If it escapes completely, the worm will cause a gigantic earthquake, so they have to close the door and seal it away as fast as they can. But when Daijin, the keystone that keeps the gate shut, leaves its post and takes the form of a cat,...

Makoto Shinkai has been called the new Hayao Miyazaki from the moment he arrived on the scene -- and not entirely without reason. The filmmaker has made some of the most successful anime movies of all time, employing stunning visuals that bring tear-jerking stories to life. Like Miyazaki, Shinkai blends traditional Japanese folklore with modern stories to tell fantastical yet intimate coming-of-age stories.
Shinkai's latest, "Suzume," is a movie he's been slowly building his whole career up to. This serves as the end of his unofficial natural disaster trilogy that started with "Your Name," this time directly tackling the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami in the plot. In "Suzume," we follow the titular character, a young woman living in a small town in Japan who is tasked with closing a series of magical turns across the country before it falls into another disaster. Along the way, Suzume and her companion (who...
