Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter and producer, Victoria Monét winds up summer playlists even more with the official follow up music video to her latest smash single, “On My Mama”, just released!
The 2000s-nostalgic video overflows with southern flare while being accented with ground-scraping lowriders, signature Y2K street style, cameos from Black fraternities and sororities and Hbcu culture, various dance numbers from renowned choreographer, Sean Bankhead and special cameos from Monét’s own mama and intuitively talented 2-year-old daughter, Hazel Monét. The “On My Mama” visual reminds of a significant era in the early 2000s when underground southern music began to take over national airwaves and catch the eye of people across the globe.

There's something particularly profound about Mary J. Blige holding her Strength of a Woman festival in the heart of Black culture's mecca. This year, the queen of hip-hop soul returned to Atlanta from May 11-14 for her second annual "by us for us" event - an uplifting, fulfilling, and fun-filled experience that catered to every woman in attendance. And boy, did they have a time.
The best way to describe the Strength of a Woman festival is like a warm hug from your family matriarch, welcoming you with open arms for the most captivating weekend of your life. While there have been some comparisons from onlookers who see the festival as a mini Essence Fest, Blige's second iteration of her brainchild - in partnership with Pepsi and Live Nation Urban - is building its own unique identity. In addition to your traditional concert series, festivalgoers were also treated to an...

R&b is one of the biggest genres not only in music consumption but in the awards conversation. Artists like Beyoncé, Silk Sonic, Jazmine Sullivan, Jon Batiste, and H.E.R. have made a lot of noise due to their success at the Grammys, and it’s likely that one or two breakouts from this year will join their ranks. Let’s take a look at some buzzing names in R&b contention this year.
SEEBillboard Hot 100: Every #1 song of 2023
If you’re talking about R&b in 2023, you have to talk about Sza. The singer-songwriter has had a great year with the success of her sophomore album, “Sos.” It’s indisputably the frontrunner for Best Progressive R&b Album. There is, perhaps, a chance that the record could be moved to the pop field because it juggles many genres at once, but let’s assume it’s in R&b for now.

After throwing a temper tantrum, Chris Brown is backtracking on a series of comments he made following the 2023 Grammys.
The 33-year-old singer was up for an award in the best R&b album category and lost to pianist Robert Glasper, reports People magazine.
While other nominees in the category included Pj Morton, Mary J. Blige and Lucky Daye, Brown openly voiced his frustration after losing the award by verbally attacking Glasper in a series of posts shared to his Instagram Story.
After Glasper’s 2022 album Black Radio III took home the prize, he began expressing his feelings by writing on his story “Yall Playing Who Da F-k Is This?” against a screenshot where Glasper was announced as the winner.
People further states that in screenshots captured by The Shade Room, Brown continued: “I’m going to keep kicking a- respectfully” before writing in white letters against a plain black background.

Chris Brown reportedly threw a tantrum after losing out on the Best R&b Album Grammy to pianist Robert Glasper.
The ceremony was held at the Crypto.com arena in Los Angeles on Sunday (5 February), with Trevor Noah returning to host the show for the third consecutive year.
Brown, 33, was nominated in the R&b category for his 10th studio album Breezy, featuring collaborations with Jack Harlow, H.E.R., and Anderson. Paak.
However, Glasper ultimately won the prize for his record Black Radio III.
Brown reportedly reacted to losing the award in a series of since-deleted Instagram Stories.
“Who the f*** is Robert Glasper,” he allegedly wrote, as seen in screenshots posted to Twitter by HipHopDX.
“Ima keep kicking y’all a** respectfully,” Brown reportedly added.
“I gotta get my skills up...Ima start playing the harmonica,” the rapper apparently also said, sharing a photoshopped picture of himself playing the instrument.

The 2023 R&b Grammy categories are some of the most packed in years. Sometimes the winners are obvious and one particular artist sweeps. This year, however, big names in the field like Jazmine Sullivan, Beyoncé, and Mary J. Blige are all in the hunt for more trophies for their mantels, going against newer acts like Snoh Aalegra and Muni Long. But who will be victorious come February 5?
SEEGrammy predictions for Best Visual Media Song: Let’s talk about ‘Bruno,’ Beyonce and Lady Gaga Best R&b Performance
Every song here genuinely could make a case to win. If they go for longtime favorites, Mary J. Blige and Anderson .Paak’s “Here With Me” could scoop this up. Lucky Daye also has a shot here since “Over” was a big hit for him, but its absence in Best R&b Song might be a red flag. Then there’s Beyoncé’s “Virgo’s Groove.

The R&b field is one of my favorites every year at the Grammys. More often than not the winners tend to reflect passionate choices, regardless of chart positions or name recognition, truly awarding the best of the R&b world. Let’s take a look at the album categories this year, and who’s out front for the awards.

It seems like Mary J. Blige will take home her 10th Grammy — and her third for an album — with her record “Good Morning Gorgeous (Deluxe).” This year marks one of Blige’s biggest Grammy nomination hauls: she earned six including across-the-board R&b bids, as well as Album of the Year. “Good Morning Gorgeous” was also a big return for Blige, aided by her acclaimed Super Bowl slot, for which she won an Emmy a few months ago.

She kicks off the song singing smoothly over a mid-tempo beat — but then she goes into Super Saiyan mode, spitting 34 bars and delivering snappy one-liners that will make you dance and laugh, and will boost your self-esteem. As a music critic, it’s important to listen to as much music as possible. Play your favorites, but also discover new artists. Randomly select an album and give it a try. Check out recommendations from family, friends and folks on social media. Give that album you didn’t love another try.
Still, we like what we like, and music is subjective. With that said, here’s my list of the top albums of 2022!
1. Beyoncé, Renaissance
Listening to Beyoncé’s Renaissance is like watching and rewatching that epic TV series or film — the discovery is endless, and there is so much to unpack. The lyrics are catchy and confident, the beats are bouncy and brilliant and her vocal range is impeccable, going from fluttery coos on “Virgo’s Groove” to soft and sensual on “Plastic Off the Sofa” to assertive shit-talking throughout the 16-track dance escapade.

On Friday night, lines formed outside of a relatively unmarked warehouse space in Downtown Los Angeles for “Club Renaissance,” a two-night event in celebration of Renaissance, Beyoncé‘s seventh studio album. The album, released in July, is a kaleidoscopic exploration of genre, escapism and self-expression; on it, Beyoncé experiments with different shades of dance, house, disco, pop and R&b.
The party’s unspoken 1970s-era theme was interpreted by attendees for their outfits in a range of ways, much like the sonic versatility of the project itself. The event, presented by Amazon Music and Parkwood Entertainment, featured several notables in attendance, including Kenya Barris, Lori Harvey, and singers Syd, Victoria Monét and Lucky Daye.

When you hear the hip-hop-styled piano rhythm of “Pof,” the opening cut on Ari Lennox’s second album age/sex/location, the first thing you’ll notice is her voice, flowing full and wry like Erykah Badu circa “On & On.” Yes, this is a real, honest-to-God soul singer: no autotune effects, no flattening croon that approximates laptop software, no double-time rhythm meant to approximate a rapper’s inflections. “This Must Be how the white gays felt when Madonna’s Confessions on a Dance Floor came out,” I direct-messaged my best friend in the wee hours of July 29, 2022. “Finally, an album for us.”
It was the third consecutive time I had listened to Beyoncé’s seventh studio album, Renaissance, after it debuted at midnight. As a Black queer millennial who grew up anticipating the global superstar’s stylishly curated releases, this felt remarkably personal. Few years are as packed for the R&b categories at the Grammys as this one. With releases from some of the top artists in the genre and in music in general, as well as a lot of Grammy darlings back in the mix, it seems like many artists will truly just be lucky to net a nom. Let’s take a look at some of the top contenders this year.
We can’t talk about R&b without first talking about Queen Bey. This year Beyoncé could compete in Best Progressive R&b Album with her newest release, “Renaissance.” The album is acclaimed and will easily be the front-runner if it is submitted in R&b (it might instead be slotted in pop). As for song choices, Beyoncé could go for the groovy “Cuff It” or the urban-leaning “Church Girl” for Best R&b Performance, while “Plastic Off The...

Directed by Colin Tilley, the video features a group of fabulously clad Megans voguing along to the house-inspired track as the rapper’s boasts about being the top dog are supported by her impeccable flow.

Alicia Keys has announced a deluxe edition of her 2021 “double-sided” album Keys that boasts new songs, remixes and more.
Keys II, out Aug. 12, features both the “Originals” version and the Mike Will Made-It-produced “Unlocked” version of the album, which Rolling Stone called Keys’ “most ambitious” album to date, “going from torch ballads to dance tracks and spanning decades with ease.”
The new tracks include “Trillions” featuring Brett Faiyaz — Keys also appears on “Ghetto Gatsby” on Faiyaz’ new album — and “Stay” with Lucky Daye, who previously featured on Keys’ “Come for Me” alongside Khalid.
