In 1994, professional basketball was all the rage, largely thanks to the rise of Michael Jordan and the historic run of three back-to-back NBA championships across 1991, 1992, and 1993, as chronicled in "The Last Dance" documentary series. Before his domination of the NBA, Jordan was considered a blue chip player, an athlete regarded as a hot prospect to be drafted into a professional franchise. Jordan gained blue chip status out of high school in the early 1980s, but he'd go on to attend college at University of North Carolina before being drafted by the Chicago Bulls in 1984. It wouldn't be until 10 years after Jordan's draft that "The Exorcist" and "The French Connection" director William Friedkin would direct a movie about the corrupt and complicated practice of college recruitment for sports in the perfect basketball movie, "Blue Chips."
"Blue Chips," released in 1994, follows Nick Nolte as Pete Bell, head coach of the fictional Western University Dolphins in Los Angeles.

ESPN college basketball analyst Dick Vitale said Wednesday that his battle with cancer continues, as he once again has vocal cord cancer
The 84-year-old Vitale posted on Twitter that he will need six weeks of radiation to treat it.
“I plan to fight like hell to be ready to call games when the college hoops season tips off in the Fall,” Vitale wrote.
Vitale had a procedure in July and was on voice rest for 6-8 weeks. That’s when it was discovered that his past issues have returned.
Vitale has been with ESPN since 1979, the year the network launched. He called ESPN’s first college basketball broadcast. His trademark cry of “Awesome, baby,” has marked hundreds of hoop moments.
In 2021, Vitale was diagnosed with lymphoma, months after he had multiple surgeries to remove melanoma. Last year, he announced that he was cancer-free.

Disney’s widespread layoffs are not going quite as deep at ESPN as in other parts of the empire, but the roster of those departing does include at least one high-ranking exec: Russell Wolff, Gm of ESPN+.
The EVP’s exit was reported by multiple media outlets and then confirmed to Deadline by a person familiar with the cuts, whose second wave began rolling out Monday and will continue until Thursday. Disney plans to lay off some 7,000 workers, roughly 3% of its global workforce, in pursuit of $5.5 billion in cost savings. ESPN is expected to cut fewer than 100 workers during this round.
Wolff was promoted to his current role in 2018, the same year ESPN+ launched. The service now ended 2022 with 24.9 million subscribers. In a note to his colleagues (read it below), Wolff said he would be departing in July, capping a 26-year run at the network. Prior to running ESPN+, Wolff...

The Memphis native, who also played for the Montreal Expos and Boston Red Sox, developed a strong rapport with Hall of Fame pitchers Bob Gibson and Steve Carlton, earning two All-Star appearances and a spot in the Cardinals Hall of Fame.

The legendary sports broadcast Dick Vitale delivered an emotional speech at the 2022 Espys on Wednesday, July 20, as he was honored with the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance. Vitale, who started his broadcast career in 1979, was diagnosed with lymphoma last October, having previously had surgery for melanoma. Following his surgeries, he suffered from dysplasia and ulcerated lesions on his vocal cords, which meant he could not talk for several weeks afterwards. The long-time college basketball commentator was given the Ok to return to work in late November 2021. In April 2022, Vitale took to Twitter to announce that he was cancer free, quoting the late college basketball coach Jim Valvano — “Don’t Give up Don’T Ever Give Up!” Vitale has raised over 50 million for the Valvano-inspired V Foundation over the years. “We are not going to stop, stop chasing the dream of raising dollars,” Vitale said during his acceptance speech. “Jimmy’s dream was to beat cancer.

Vitale returned to ESPN to commentate on the college game between Gonzaga and UCLA and became emotional as he was introduced by his broadcast partner Dave O’Brien. “I can’t believe I’m sitting here,” said a teary-eyed Vitale, who was given the lymphoma diagnosis in October and is currently undergoing treatment. “This is really a big thrill for me,” he continued. “I want to thank all who sent me so many great messages… [ESPN president] Jimmy Pitaro, all my buddies at ESPN. I want to thank certainly my family and all the fans. My, you have been unbelievable.” We’re so happy you’re back, @DickieV #VStrongBaby pic.twitter.com/oEjtAAOi3U — ESPN (@espn) November 24, 2021 Vitale, who started his broadcast career...

The two top teams in college basketball met tonight as No. 1 Gonzaga faced No. 2 UCLA, but the highlight of the evening was legendary ESPN broadcaster Dick Vitale returning to call the game after battling two separate forms of cancer this year, with his latest diagnosis coming just last month.
Before the game, Vitale said being cleared to call the contest was “the best medicine I could ask for,” and it was clear he meant it as he took the mic opposite Dave O’Brien.
“It’s great being here, Dave,” said Vitale, who was visibly emotional as O’Brien briefly introduced him. “I didn’t want to cry,” he continued, his voice cracking.

ESPN college basketball announcer Dick Vitale revealed Monday that he has been diagnosed with lymphoma after being diagnosed and treated for melanoma this summer.
After several tests over the past few weeks, doctors confirmed the new form of cancer is unrelated to his previous experience with the disease. Vitale will be receiving chemotherapy and reports that the prognosis is good.
The ESPN veteran will be on the mic during the upcoming college basketball season and is under contract with ESPN through 2021-22.
In a statement via ESPN, he says, “I’ve seen firsthand the devastation that cancer can have on families, on children, and on all of our loved ones. It can bring you to your knees. It’s physically and emotionally exhausting. It robs you of so many things, including life itself for some of the most unfortunate patients. I never lose sight of that, and that’s why I feel so lucky.

Jimmy Kimmel is sorry.
The late-night TV personality has issued an apology for a recurring sketch on The Man Show in which he impersonated NBA player Karl Malone.
“I have long been reluctant to address this, as I knew doing so would be celebrated as a victory by those who equate apologies with weakness and cheer for leaders who use prejudice to divide us,” Kimmel said in a statement, via Deadline.
“That delay was a mistake. There is nothing more important to me than your respect, and I apologize to those who were genuinely hurt or offended by the makeup I wore or the words I spoke.”
Kimmel pointed out that he started impersonating Malone on Kroq radio in the mid-90s, and it eventually made its way to The Man Show, which he co-hosted with Adam Carolla on Comedy Central.

ABC late-night host Jimmy Kimmel addressed his history of performing in blackface on Tuesday, calling the clips “embarrassing” in hindsight.

Kimmel has faced repeated criticism over the years for a recurring bit in which he impersonated NBA player Karl Malone, using makeup to darken his skin. During the run of “The Man Show,” which concluded in 2004, Kimmel also donned blackface to impersonate Oprah Winfrey.

"When I express a stout opinion during #MarchMadness I am called a whore, c---, threatened with sexual violence. Not okay," she tweeted on Sunday.

If the Kentucky Wildcats win the Ncaa tournament, expect more lip locking between Ashley Judd and Dick Vitale!
Last weekend, a celebratory kiss (after the Wildcats beat Arkansas 78-63 in the SEC championship) between the actress and the Espn sportscaster had social media going crazy – and Ashley tells Access Hollywood there could be more kissing on the way.
Access caught up with the Ashley – an always vocal University of Kentucky alum – at the "Insurgent" premiere on Monday, where she was quick to squash the brouhaha surrounding the smooch.
