Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes has already garnered some pretty stellar first reactions, and the film looks like it will rule the box office as well. The film is projected to gross $130 million worldwide during its opening weekend, which would be a nice boost for theaters after the lacklustre opening of The Fall Guy.
The domestic box office take for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is currently sitting at $50 million or more, which places it more or less even with the previous installments of the modern franchise. Rise of the Planet of the Apes opened to $54.8 million in 2011, followed by Dawn of the Planet of the Apes with $72 million in 2014, and War for the Planet of the Apes with $56.2 million in 2017. Robert Pattinson was cast as the seventh iteration of a live-action Batman in Matt Reeves’ The Batman. Set during the early years of Bruce Wayne’s vigilantism, the film saw the character investigating several murders of high-profile men of power in Gotham. The film was released in 2022 and earned $722 million at the box office.
Though Ben Affleck was still playing the role of the Caped Crusader in the Dceu at the time, he stepped down from a solo Batman film, which allowed Reeves to explore a younger Batman with Pattinson. The Twilight star mentioned that the film was different from previous iterations of the character as it focused on the inner turmoil of Bruce Wayne. According to him, the only other film that achieved the feat was Batman: Mask of the Phantasm.

Director Wes Ball tells Den of Geek that he remembers seeing the original 1968 sci-fi classic Planet of the Apes on “HBO or something” as a child, watching with his dad. “I’m sure all the concepts probably went over my head,” he muses now. “I was probably very young. I don’t remember having a reaction to the Statue of Liberty, but I remember the images very clearly. I remember the feral humans in the grass and the apes on horses and the sets and obviously that [ending] on the beach. That’s what I remember—the images, the iconography of it all.”
The original Planet of the Apes indeed contains some of the most iconic images in all of sci-fi cinema, and it’s no coincidence that some of those images—along with other references—have been reimagined for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, the 10th entry overall...

Following the success of the Maze Runner franchise, Wes Ball’s directorial expertise will now be seen in the upcoming Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes which is the 4th installment in the reboot film series of the popular franchise. He follows The Batman filmmaker Matt Reeves, who helmed the 2nd and 3rd films in the series.

But Ball wasn’t initially on board when approached for the project, which would continue the legacy of Ceasar and his tribe. According to the director, the narrative had come a full circle with the trilogy that began with Rupert Wyatt’s 2011 reboot up to Reeves’ War for the Planet of the Apes in 2017. So he pitched a creative new idea for the 4th film, and thankfully, that excited the producers.

For the sequel to Rupert Wyatt’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Matt Reeves was brought into the picture, who, at the time, was notable for his work on Cloverfield. Not only Dawn of the Planet of the Apes ended up being bigger and better in every aspect compared to its predecessor, but it also made a splash at the box office, grossing over $710 million.
Reasonably, the hype for the third film in the trilogy, which was set to conclude Caesar’s story was extremely high and Reeves didn’t disappoint, as the threequel ended up outshining its predecessor. Interestingly, for the poignant finale of the trilogy, Reeves took inspiration from one of the best Star Wars entries to date.

The Fall Guy: Ryan Gosling says there’s already a script for the sequel (but will it ever get made?)
It may not be looking too good for the box office of The Fall Guy, but there have been slow-starting movies before. Ryan Gosling has revealed that there is already a script written for a sequel and all that’s left is the hope that audiences vote with their wallets so another one gets greenlit. While The Fall Guy is an established intellectual property, it’s not exactly a title that the masses geek out over. The star power of Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt was seen to be a big driving force for audiences. While this year sees some stalls in releases due to the strikes, The Fall Guy was expected to open with at least $30 million in its opening weekend, but fell shy of that number.
Gosling, who portrays a stuntman in the film, has told Men’s Journal that a script for a sequel came together rather quickly.

Grossing over $2 billion worldwide since its inception in 1968, the Planet of the Apes franchise has turned out to be one of the most successful ones in Hollywood. Based on French author Pierre Boulle’s 1963 novel La Planète des singes, the title has released a total of nine movies, expanding its lore, with a tenth one, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes starring The Witcher actress Freya Allan in a leading role and set some 300 years after the events of the last outing.
A rough outline of all the movies involves humans, intelligent apes, and some sort of conflict. However, the dystopian setting where mankind comes down on its knees to face a brutal twist of fate sets the narrative in different orders for the different iterations. Someone who has just embarked on watching, or one who wishes to refresh their memory of the events of the films, need not watch all nine of them.

Wes Ball is ready to rumble with his upcoming release, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. After the reboot trilogy with Andy Serkis’ Ceasar in the lead came to an end, Ball took on the reigns with new characters and a new story but set in the same (or at least similar) world. This time, instead of Ceasar, we have Noa, a young chimpanzee hunter at the heart of the story, played by Owen Teague.

Following the cult ’70’s film series Planet of the Apes and Tim Burton’s 2001 remake, the franchise was rebooted in 2011 with Rise of the Planet of the Apes directed by Rupert Wyatt. This was succeeded by two more sequels which were helmed by The Batman director Matt Reeves in 2014 and 2017 respectively.

Matt Reeves did wonders with the Apes. The filmmakers’ Planet of the Apes trilogy created a fantastical world that was surprisingly rich and beautifully crafted. With that, it was difficult to imagine another director taking on this exciting series. Enter Wes Ball. Coming off of the popular Maze Runner franchise, Ball has successfully continued the already impressive world with his latest, The Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. The film offers a fresh faced cast that includes, Owen Teague, Freya Allan, Kevin Durand, Peter Macon, and William H. Macy. It is a bold sequel that continues what Reeves started with a smart and satisfying new story (which is getting great buzz).

Planet of the Apes is one of the longest-running IPs in Hollywood. The franchise is gearing up for another run at the box office with the upcoming film Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. The movie has been directed by Wes Ball. It is set to be a continuation of the previous films in the series that were directed by Matt Reeves and Rupert Wyatt.
Although Reeves has not returned to the franchise for the latest movie, Wes Ball made it clear that he has a great deal of admiration for what the filmmaker has achieved within the series already. In fact, Ball had words of condemnation for the Oscars committee for failing to recognize Reeves’ movies for their special effects artistry.

The DC Animated Universe had a host of versions of Batman strewn across the timeline, but one DC film portrayed the character a little differently than what is usually the tone that is taken for him. Bruce Timm talked to ScienceFiction.com about how he saw Batman, and how one particular film approached the character differently.

In Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, director Wes Ball plans to breathe new life into the franchise with a story set several generations in the future following Caesar's reign. Apes are now the dominant species living harmoniously and humans have been reduced to living in the shadows.
As a new tyrannical ape leader builds his empire, one young ape undertakes a harrowing journey that will cause him to question all that he has known about the past and to make choices that will define a future for apes and humans alike.
Given Ball's expertise in the young adult realm with The Maze Runner movies and chatter about Kingdom shifting the spotlight to a younger cast of characters, some fans have expressed concerns about the classic sci-fi franchise becoming a franchise for teens. Then, there's also the fact it has to follow the previous trilogy (no easy feat).

With Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes hitting theaters soon, I figured now would be as good a time as any to revisit the recent Planet of the Apes reboot trilogy and journey through Caesar’s story all over again before exploring Kingdom‘s take on the future of the world he created. The modern Planet of the Apes film are something of a pleasantly surprising enigma in popular culture.
In an age where many reboots either adhere so closely to the source material as to feel like a redundant carbon copy or stray so far as to be completely unrecognizable, the Apes trilogy manages to find that balance of maintaining the spirit of the original films while carving out an identity and a story all its own. But just how did they accomplish such a feat? Let’s find out.

When it comes to the most influential sci-fi releases that popularised space operas, Star Wars is often the obvious pick, which broke industry records upon debuting back in 1977. Others would argue it’s Frank Herbert’s Dune, which hit the shelves back in 1965 and ended up revolutionizing the sci-fi landscape, serving as an inspiration for George Lucas’ Star Wars.
But while Dune was indeed a monumental success, it was Charlton Heston’s Planet of the Apes that laid the foundation for space operas on the silver screen.

The Dark Knight trilogy is considered, by some, the best superhero franchise ever made. The trio of films directed by Christopher Nolan, released between 2005 and 2012, are revered for their grown-up, adult crime drama vibe and cinematic scope.
Now Nolan’s brother and franchise co-writer Jonathan Nolan says he’d be down to return to the Batman universe.
In an interview promoting his hit Amazon series Fallout, Nolan was asked if he’d ever want to revisit the Batman franchise.

Let’s travel back to 2008 when the summer hit its fever pitch of the long-awaited Christopher Nolan superhero epic, The Dark Knight. I could remember it like it was yesterday when I was a sophomore in college reading up on all the production coverage I could find and rewatching those amazing trailers, following that online campaign and viral marketing, which was way ahead of its time. My presale tickets were bought; I was amped beyond words for what I was about to witness. I think it was the longest wait in a theatre line as well, clocking in three hours before seating on opening night at my local IMAX. Because, at that time, seats weren’t reserved, and it was a battle royale trying to get that coveted middle-row seat. Picture “Running of the Bulls” in Spain, but with people trying to get that damn middle row. Boy, how far...

You just can't keep those damn dirty apes down. 10 years after Tim Burton's 2001 "Planet of the Apes" re-imagining failed to reignite audiences' passion for stories about intellectually-enhanced simians, the long-running sci-fi franchise made an unexpectedly strong comeback with "Rise of the Planet of the Apes." Director Rupert Wyatt's entry in the series is now generally considered the weakest of the modern "Apes" trilogy, which is more of a testament to what Matt Reeves was able to accomplish with his subsequent sequels than necessarily a knock against Wyatt's film. "Rise" itself makes for an effective cautionary tale about humanity's hubris, our lack of compassion toward other living beings, and our habit of being our own worst enemy, as seen through the eyes of its co-protagonist, Caesar (Andy Serkis in his touchstone motion-capture role).
Yes, it's easy to forget that Caesar wasn't originally the singular lead of his own story.

For many fans, Bruce Timm’s Dcau gave the most definitive version of Batman. Matt Reeves’ The Batman took inspiration from Timm’s dark and gritty tone of the character in Batman: The Animated Series. Timm proved that he could develop feature-length animated movies, debuting with the Batman movie, Mask of the Phantasm. However, Timm never once got the call from DC or WB to create a live-action Batman film.

Timm knows that he missed his chance, admitting that he was too lazy to pursue the live-action project. He was even confident that he could come up with a decent movie, that was better than George Clooney’s Batman & Robin and reached somewhere near Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight.

Nicolas Cage has showcased through his extreme performances that he can embody just about any character, be it a hero or a villain, as efficiently and intensely as possible. That said, it’s worth noticing that while his remarkable acting skills have also granted him the golden ticket into two of the biggest franchises in Hollywood, he has only been cast in heroic and anti-heroic roles.
Nicolas Cage in Dream Scenario.
While he has absolutely nailed it as all of those characters, the truth is that Cage actually wants to play one forgotten nemesis of Batman who has only ever been played by the late Vincent Price in the late 1960s: Egghead. What’s more, he wants to play the character in Matt Reeves’ franchise of the Dark Knight, and has let his feelings known to Warner Bros. about the same as well!

David Zaslav, since his appointment as the CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, has not been the most popular guy around. With his cost-cutting decisions from shelving projects to cancelling others, there has been a lot of things that have fans reeling. And now, seems like they have one more thing to hate about the man.

Vashon Film Institute has set the date for the third annual Vashon Island Film Festival, which is slated to take place Aug. 8-11. The announcement comes with the launch of two new divisions of the Vashon Film Institute and a new donation arm, which accepts restricted funds to be used solely to fund improvements at the Vashon Theatre.
Vfi’s new divisions are the Quartermaster Lab, a collective of filmmaking programs, and VFIpresents, its sales, distribution and release division, which will also focus on organizing community events outside Viff.
“The quintessential goal in founding Vfi was to support independent filmmaking in the Pacific Northwest,” said Mark Mathias Sayre, founder of Vashon Film Institute. “To that end, Viff has already brought compelling indie features and documentaries to local audiences and will continue to do so. Updated, 10:27 Am: 20th Century Studios’ Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes landed on Nrg’s three-week tracking Thursday with a $54 million domestic opening outlook, which jibes with what Quorum’s six-week projection was a few weeks ago.

It’s been seven years since the last Planet of the Apes film. When the series was rebooted under the vision of Matt Reeves, it was a highly praised trilogy that expanded on the original concept and showcased how to make a compelling blockbuster. Since War of the Planet of the Apes, Matt Reeves has moved on to The Batman universe. Stepping behind the camera is Wes Ball, a filmmaker largely known for his Maze Runner adaptations. Tim Daly was 3 years and 15 days old when his would-be childhood hero George Reeves was found dead of an apparent suicide at age 45. The man who played Superman would go on to inspire countless other adaptations of DC characters, including Adam West’s Batman in 1966. Later, Daly himself became the Man of Steel in a legendary run of Superman: The Animated Series that began in 1996 and lasted till 2012.

With Dune: Part Two and Civil War in theaters, it’s already been a great year for sci-fi, and that doesn’t even count goofball flicks like Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, or any other movies with the word “empire” in the title. Sure, it’s not all perfect. Bong Joon-ho’s Mickey 17, starring Robert Pattinson, has been pulled from the release schedule and there’s no way that Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse will release this year. But overall, 2024 has been a strong start for sci-fi movies.

Ben Affleck was ready with his Batman script and it was only a matter of time before he’d get to star in his solo film. Unfortunately, fate had some other plans. Since the actor had reservations about the film and some other personal complications, he decided to step away, and in came Matt Reeves. What he produced forth was a film that would go on to receive three nominations at the Academy Awards.

The disappointment that comes from seeing a great film do poorly at the box office almost certainly never goes away. One of the most important Batman storytellers of all time, Bruce Timm, does not seem to understand how good Batman: Mask of the Phantasm is.

Jennifer Garner is opening up about her “emotional” audition for Felicity, which led to her crying in the bathroom afterward.
The 13 Going on 30 star, who made a guest appearance as Hannah Bibb, the ex-girlfriend of Noel Crane (Scott Foley), in the J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves-created series, recently locked back at her audition for what “must have been the breakup scene.”
“I remember the audition. I remember going into the bathroom after because the scene was so emotional and I needed to cry,” she said on The Ringer’s Dear Felicity podcast. “I needed to hide in the bathroom stall and finish the cry that I started in the audition because it was such a powerful scene.”
Garner claimed Abrams made her come back later to re-audition for the role, to which podcast host and former Felicity star Greg Grunberg quipped, “That makes sense to me, because you’re not very good.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is just over a month away, and it looks like Wes Ball’s addition to the franchise is stacking up to be a significant hit. The last three Planet of the Apes movies did a good job reinventing the franchise for the 21st century, with the last two instalments, directed by Matt Reeves, especially acclaimed. While the Caesar trilogy has come to an end, the new film is set to follow the same continuity, only taking place generations later. In many ways, Kingdom seems more in line with the original series, with talking apes, led by Owen Teague’s Noa, at war with a primitive human society.
According to Deadline, the film is tracking for a $54-61 million dollar opening, which would put it on track with the last film, War for the Planet of the Apes, which opened with $56 million. It’ll...

Last week, Max finally released the trailer for their much-anticipated The Batman spin-off series, The Penguin, teeing up its fall release date. Overall, it looks highly reminiscent of Matt Reeves’ film, with the cinematography very much in the Grieg Fraser mode. But what else do we know about The Penguin? More than you may think.
The Penguin is set after The Batman.
The plot of The Penguin is set to follow the title character, once again portrayed by Colin Farrell, as he rises through the ranks of the Gotham City criminal underworld. After the events of The Batman and the flooding of Gotham, including the death of Carmine Falcone, Cobblepot desperately wants to fill the power vacuum. Colin Farrell has also indicated that the film will serve as an origin story for the Penguin, something we have seen twice on screen before in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns, played by Danny DeVito.

"Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" got the party started by beating all early estimates and overperforming at the box office. Meanwhile, actor/director Dev Patel is doing everything in his power to turn himself into our next action star with the upcoming "Monkey Man," which is similarly poised to provide a much-needed boost among moviegoers for original movies. But as exciting as these offerings are, both of them might as well be the hors d'oeuvres and appetizers preceding the main course: "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes."
The longstanding sci-fi franchise continues to prove the wisdom of its central "Apes together strong" maxim, reignited by the recent trilogy of acclaimed movies begun by 2011's prequel/reboot "Rise of the Planet of the Apes." After Matt Reeves took over the...
