The graceful movements of 12-year-old Anthony Madu, a boy from Lagos, Nigeria, with a zeal for ballet, are inherently cinematic: arms stretched out to the sky, his body contorting like a determined feather fending off a gust of wind, just before he pirouettes with elegant agility that commands attention. At school, however, he faces constant bullying since his passion doesn’t fit his country’s traditional gender role expectations.
But thanks to the attention gained from a viral video of him performing, the prestigious Elmhurst Ballet School in London, England, offers Anthony a scholarship to study abroad with them for the next seven years. Inevitably, the life-changing opportunity comes with its fair share of thorny repercussions that will reshape his young identity. Co-directed by Matthew Ogens (Oscar-nominated for the 2021 documentary short “Audible”) and Nigerian filmmaker Joel ‘Kachi Benson, the inspirational doc “Madu” forgoes talking heads, opting for the observational approach...

This year’s edition of the coastal festival will open with the world premiere of Matt Ogens and Joel Kachi Benson’s “Madu,” a Disney documentary about a young Nigerian whose ballet performance went viral online. It concludes with the world premiere of “Chosen Family,” directed by and starring Heather Graham, who also plans to attend with the cast.
In between, Sbiff will host many noteworthy film screenings and events. Exclusive: Disney Original Documentary today revealed its next project, a feature documentary on Anthony Madu, the Nigerian boy who became a viral sensation after a video showed him dancing ballet barefoot on a rainy street outside Lagos.
Oscar nominee Matt Ogens and Kachi Benson are directing Madu, which will follow a remarkable course of events that began in 2020 when Anthony’s ballet teacher posted 44 seconds of him performing graceful pirouettes and leaps in that unexpected setting. The doc announcement came as young Madu readies for an appearance this weekend at Disney’s massive D23 expo in Anaheim, California, where fans will get to see the first footage from the film. The company says Madu, a production of Hunting Lane Films,...

People make documentaries about all kinds of things: some slight and silly, others educational or emotional. But if you want to be nominated for an Oscar in the doc short category, it’s best to zero in on an issue the Academy can get behind, like homelessness, bullying or prejudice. Just imagine if any other category were the same way — say, if the award for best sound mixing recognized only engineers who’d worked on movies that make the world a better place — but so it goes. At least all five of this year’s nominees are solid (sometimes quite sophisticated) treatments of their subjects. As Roger Ebert used to say, “It’s not what a movie is about, it’s how it is about it.”

Right before their film competes at the Academy Awards, the filmmakers behind documentary short “Audible” have debuted a PSA in honor of Deaf History Month.
“Audible” director Matthew Ogens and producer Geoff McLean have reteamed to produce a new public service announcement promoting Deaf History Month, which runs March 13 to April 15. The PSA features the documentary’s Amaree McKenstry-Hall, and deaf activist and model Nyle Dimarco, communicating through American Sign Language, explaining the documentary and Deaf History Month.
“We are tough, we are strong, we are determined,” McKenstry-Hall signs in the PSA.
Dimarco, who is a producer on “Audible,” adds, “There isn’t anything we can’t do, we will succeed.”
“Audible” focuses on teenagers at Maryland School for the Deaf, specifically following the life of McKenstry-Hall, then a senior at the school. The film depicts McKenstry-Hall as he competes on the school football team and attempts to defend the school’s winning streak,...

If you typically fill out your Oscar ballots after consulting with the predictions of Gold Derby’s Experts, you may have noticed something unique this year. In exactly two of the 23 categories — Best Actress and Best Documentary Short — all of the nominees have the support of at least one of our Experts from major media outlets. Are these races still too close to call? The other 21 categories at the 2022 Oscars are less scattershot and feature at least one nominee with zero Experts predicting it to win.

Let’s face it, there’s nothing new you can do with the post-apocalyptic genre. What we can hope for now is that there’s a visual flair and/or a sincerity and dedication to the characters that will set the story apart, no matter what medium it’s in. Recently, The Maze Runner series brought about an intriguing combination of post-apocalypse and totalitarianism, Mad Max:Fury Road was pure energy on screen, and The Last of Us was an interactive masterpiece. Go North bares the most resemblance to the latter without the terrifying monsters, so slightly less interesting. The inciting incident at the core of Go North is a mystery which we don’t really discover, but it isn’t important no matter how much we might want to know. This is a character movie about finding your place at the end of civilization.

"The rules are the rules." Orion Pictures + FilmBuff have revealed an intense trailer for the indie film Go North, a post-apocalyptic adventure about some kids who try to escape the "Lord of the Flies" community they're living in. Starring a young cast including Patrick Schwarzenegger, Jacob Lofland (from Mud), Sophie Kennedy Clark, Joshua Close, Derek Brandon, Joe Cipriano, Ele Bardha, Atif Hashwi, and James Bloor. This is another one of those movies about a "catastrophic event" in the near future that wipes out everyone. Except this time it apparently spares all the teenagers and children, who have created their own communities to survive. But of course, it's not the kind of world everyone wants to live in. Enjoy. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Matt Ogens' Go North, direct from YouTube: In the aftermath of an unknown catastrophe, a community left with zero living adults has descended into a modern-day Lord of the Flies,...

Striking while his career iron is still heating up, Brit newcomer James Bloor is following his unlikely role in Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel Leatherface with some more American genre action. He's signed on for North, a post-apocalyptic yarn also starring Jacob Lofland (Mud), Patrick Schwarzenegger (Scouts Guide To The Zombie Apocalypse) and Sophie Kennedy Clark (Philomena).Documentarian Matthew Ogens is making the switch to fiction to direct the film. Its sketchy plot details so far reveal a group of teenagers striking out into the dangerous, blasted unknown in the wake of a cataclysm. Chris Walla of the band Death Cab For Cutie is providing the soundtrack.Bloor's only screen acting credits so far are a two-part Dci Banks story and a short based on Hansel And Gretel. In Leatherface he's reportedly playing one of three teenagers who might grow into the chainsaw-wielding maniac.North is currently shooting in Detroit.

I came across the following trailer for Meet the Hitlers, an upcoming documentary directed by Matt Ogens taking a look at the connection between names and identity, by exploring the lives of people who are linked by the most infamous name in the world: Hitler. I couldn't find much else out about the doc outside of the cast listing on IMDb and various casting announcements, but I think the trailer pretty much speaks for itself. Looks like it could be a fascinating film.

Chasing Ghosts: Beyond the Arcade
Directed By Lincoln Ruchti
Synopsis: At the unassuming Twin Galaxies arcade in Ottumwa, Iowa, early gamers fought for bragging rights at the 1982 Video Game World Championships. See how competitive gaming started, and meet arcade owner Walter Day, who still oversees scoring.
Why You Should Check It Out: There is just something about that arcade experience that I really miss. Today’s online gaming world is full of foul mouth preteen kids mocking you in almost every turn. Back in the day those kids were standing right next to you...

1Up is a new microcinema based in Perth, Australia that is launching with a very ambitious slate of screenings this summer. So far, they’ve released their full schedule for the months of June and July that includes a film almost every night of the week, and sometimes two films.
These are movies that have played on the international festival circuit, but many have not been released yet. So this is a rare treat to still see many of them still in a theater setting, even a 20-seat microcinema like 1Up.
The summer screening series kicks off with one of the best films to come out of Australia in recent years: Stuart Simpson’s vicious throwback to ’60s B-movie madness, El Monstro Del Mar, which was reviewed on Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film last year.
Other movies that 1Up will be screening include such festival hits such as Best Worst Movie,...

Wandering around a hectic Hollywood Boulevard last night on my way to meet indieWIRE colleagues Peter Knegt and Dana Harris for an Oscar viewing party at the Egyptian, I ran into Superman himself. That would be Christopher Dennis, one of the compelling subjects from Matthew Ogens's disarmingly thoughtful 2007 documentary "Confessions of a Superhero," which I reviewed here. Like the rest of the people in the movie, Dennis is a struggling actor who dons a superhero contest and poses for photos with tourists, nudging them for tips. The movie explores his lifelong Superman obsession and the way it has continued…...
