AppleTV+’s darkly comedic espionage thriller Slow Horses, starring Gary Oldman, has been renewed for season 5. More here:
More great telly is on the horizon. AppleTV+’s awards juggernaut Slow Horses has been renewed for a fifth season, even though it only just wrapped up season three.
Slow Horses, which is based on Mick Herron’s series of novels, follows Slough House, a division of MI5 filled with agents who have, one way or another, messed up their career prospects and are mostly confined to their desks. Yet, somehow this ragtag group of British heroes seem to find themselves in the middle of some pretty spectacular schemes.
Gary Oldman headlines the series as Jackson Lamb, the curmudgeon boss of Slough House and he is joined by the likes of Jack Lowden, Kristin Scott Thomas and Olivia Cooke in the cast. Oldman was recently recognised by the Golden Globes for his...

A version of this story about Gary Oldman and “Slow Horses” first ran in the drama issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Here is how the world was introduced to Gary Oldman’s Jackson Lamb, distinguished British spy: He is asleep on the couch in his office, a wreck of a room littered with half-drunk bottles of booze, overflowing ashtrays and the remains of several fast-food take-out meals. The camera pulls in, rests a beat on his holey-socked feet, and then: He rips a fart so uproarious, it jolts him upright, yanking him out of his slumber.
This is not the suave world of British spies epitomized by James Bond and John le Carré’s George Smiley (who Oldman played in 2011’s “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy”). This is “Slow Horses,” Apple TV+’s viciously funny espionage thriller about MI5 agents sent to a purgatorial outpost called Slough House, where they...

Exclusive: Gary Oldman has found “great joy” in playing the Falstaffian, flatulent-sharing, British espionage operative Jackson Lamb in Apple TV+’s Slow Horses, which has just launched season two. Meanwhile, the Harry Potter star confirmed he will play Harry Truman in one scene in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.
Lank-haired Lamb plays the operative in charge of a host of lost causes exiled out of harms way to Slough House where they wind up defending the realm from harm.
Lamb looks shambolic in shabby raincoat, weather-proofed by beer stains and slops of Kung-pao chicken, and yet you can never underestimate him.
”I don’t know how nice Jackson is really,” he tells Deadline. “I think that rather than seeking a career in the spy world, the spy world finds you. And so he is loyal and has a very strong sort of moral compass and is in a very questionable career...

Plot: Long-buried Cold War secrets emerge which threaten to bring carnage to the streets of London. When a liaison with Russian villains takes a fatal turn, our hapless heroes must overcome their individual failings and raise their spy game in a race to prevent a catastrophic incident.
Review: Espionage is such a great concept that has factored into countless films and series over the years. Spies and secret agents make for thrilling storytelling that never lacks intensity or a deep well of material to make for entertaining tales. Still, when we think of spies on screen, the first thought is of James Bond, Jason Bourne, and Ethan Hunt. The first season of Slow Horses presented a very different take on spies with a more realistic approach but one that was full of dark humor. The second season premieres globally on the streaming service Dec. 2 with the first two episodes, followed by one new episode each week after that for the duration of the six-episode season.

Gary Oldman Gets Ensnared in a Ticking Time Bomb in First Trailer for ‘Slow Horses’ Season 2 (Video)
“Slow Horses” is back and better than ever for its second season, though things are not as simple as they seem when the Slough House takes on a case that leader Jackson Lamb feels is “too suspicious.”
After an ex-service agent dies with a mysterious note on his phone, “cicada,” a nickname for Russian sleeper agents embedded in British society, the group is back in action to unveil Cold War era secrets and prevent catastrophe.
As the team begins to uncover the threat posed by the activation of the agents, Lamb warns these secrets “couldn’t have been too well-hidden.”
“This feels too suspicious,” Lamb said, “there’s more to it.”

Doctor Foster series 2 is back in fierce, fine form with an episode rich in psychological warfare…
This review contains spoilers.
See related Here's your first look at Murder On The Orient Express
During the first series of Doctor Foster, it was possible, if only for the briefest of half-seconds, to feel sorry for Simon Foster. Yes, he was a lying, cheating rodent who’d spent two years humiliating a woman he professed to love and making a mockery of the life she’d built with him in good faith, but there was something… hapless about him. Bertie Carvel’s lopsided grin ensured it. Simon’s business was a shambles—as his accountant said, he could barely add up—and pitted against clever, ferocious, injured Gemma, he seemed woefully out of his depth. He was certainly no master-villain.

We haven’t heard a whole lot about horror film The Bringing, other than that Nicolas Winding Refn almost directed it a few years ago and that Ant-Man scene-stealer Michael Peña will star in it, but now Deadline is reporting that Columbia Pictures and parent company Sony Pictures Entertainment have dropped the project. Plus, not only is The Bringing now without a studio, but Deadline also notes that it has lost formerly attached director Jeremy Lovering as well. There’s no word on any other studios interested in picking up The Bringing.

A few years back, there was a pretty interesting headline that came out of Los Angeles. Yes, I know, L.A.’s a big place, so I’ll probably have to be a bit more specific as to which story I’m referring to. But before I do that, let’s step back a minute and lay the groundwork.
In downtown Los Angeles, there was a hotel known as The Cecil Hotel (I say was because the hotel has since rebranded itself as Stay on Main), renowned for its morbid history. Located in the notorious area Skid Row, the Cecil Hotel was well known for its rampant criminal activity — it housed serial killer Richard Ramirez for some time — and suicides. In one particularly unlucky case, a man jumped from the building to commit suicide, only to land on someone down below in the process, resulting in a double death.

This Entertainment Weekly interview with Steven Moffat provided a few characteristic teases from the Sherlock showrunner, including the promise that series four would contain answers "to questions which nobody has asked" (Sherlock's Gcse results? Mycroft's shoe size? We're just spitballing here). Moffat continued, "we're very exultant about a little thing we've set up that no one is talking about". Jeremy Lovering is in negotiations to direct the horror tale "The Bringing" for Sony Pictures, a project that Nicolas Winding Refn ("Drive," "Only God Forgives") was previously circling.
The story is based on the macabre history of L.A.'s Cecil Hotel. The latest incident involves Elisa Lam, a woman who was found dead in a water tank on the hotel's roof.
Security footage captures her behaving strangely in a hotel elevator, and the story follows a man investigating her death.
Brandon and Phillip Murphy penned the script while Matt Tolmach and Daniela Cristina Cretu are set to produce.
Lovering previously helmed the "Sherlock" third season premiere, and the acclaimed Irish psychological thriller "In Fear" starring Iain De Caestecker and Allen Leech.

Earlier this summer, a report surfaced saying Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn was in early talks to direct The Bringing, a spec script by Brandon & Phillip Murphy. The film was inspired by the mysterious tale of a young woman named Elisa Lam, who can be seen in a security video on an elevator in the Cecil Hotel in La acting strangely before she disappeared and was found dead in one of the roof's water tanks two weeks later. However, when Refn revealed a month later that his next film would be his own I Walk with the Dead, we were skeptical he closed a deal for The Bringing. Now a new director has been chosen. Read on! Deadline reports Sony Pictures is now in talks with Jeremy Lovering to direct The Bringing, a horror story taking place in the hotel where the killer Richard Ramirez lived at one point and several suicides have occurred.

Horror pic The Bringing came to our attention when Drive auteur Nicolas Winding Refn entered talks to helm the project, which was rumored to have been inspired by the bizarre death of a woman at the Cecil Hotel in Los Angeles. Unfortunately, what appeared to be a highly promising chiller took a major hit when Refn departed after negotiations reportedly stalled. Now, the studio is pushing ahead with The Bringing, as Deadline reports that Jeremy Lovering is in talks to direct.
Though certainly a less familiar name than Refn, Lovering cut his teeth on the very well-received psychological horror thriller In Fear. He also helmed the first episode of Sherlock‘s third season, titled “The Empty Hearse.” Though In Fear is still on my list of films to see, “The Empty Hearse” was a terrific and fast-paced installment of the BBC series. Sony Pictures evidently saw something it liked in the director,...

This month, at a post-screening Q&A I attended for The Guest, moderator Nicholas Winding Refn told the crowd that he was not doing The Bringing, Sony's supernatural thriller inspired by the Elisa Lam case here in Los Angeles. That left the director's seat wind open, well, for anyone.
Deadline says Jeremy Lovering is in discussions to helm the film which was penned by Brandon and Phillip Murphy.
Lovering helmed the UK thriller In Fear which was released Stateside earlier this year.

Earlier this year, Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn was said to be in talks to helm The Bringing for Sony Pictures, but he would leave the project shortly after. However, the studio has now lined up another filmmaker in the form of Jeremy Lovering. He’s best known for 2013 horror movie In Fear.
Scripted by Brandon and Phillip Murphy, The Bringing is based on actual events. It focuses on Elisa Lam, a woman who was found dead in the water tanks on the roof of the infamous Cecil Hotel in Los Angeles.
A viral video of the woman acting very strangely in an elevator moments before her death led to a lot of online speculation that there was a supernatural element to what happened to her, especially as she had no history of mental illness and no drugs or alcohol were found in her system when an autopsy was performed.

Last we heard (back in May), Nicolas Winding Refn was hovering around La's Cecil Hotel with the idea to directing The Bringing. Circumstances have changed since then, however, and the latest director in the frame for the true-events-inspired chiller is In Fear's Jeremy Lovering. The film is based on the strange case of 21 year-old Canadian student Elisa Lam, who was found dead in the water tanks on the roof of the Cecil, a month after her disappearance in January last year. The coroner's verdict was accidental drowning, but a video of her odd behaviour in one of the hotel's elevators hours before her death later went viral, and led worldwide conspiracy theorists and hauntologists to believe they know better.Adding to the spook factor is the notion that serial killers Richard Ramirez and Jack Unterweger were both reportedly residents at the hotel at one point or another. The Main Street...

The Cecil Hotel has a macabre history that includes serial killers, suicides, and murder, but perhaps its most disturbing event happened last year, when a woman was recorded acting strangely in an elevator before being found drowned in a sealed water tank on the hotel’s roof two weeks later. The Bringing is an upcoming film inspired by the bizarre death and now Sony’s chosen a director for the project.
Deadline reports that Sony Pictures is in talks with Jeremy Lovering to direct The Bringing. The film’s script was written by brothers Brandon Murphy and Phillip Murphy after the woman’s bizarre drowning occurred last year. A video of the woman talking either to herself or an unseen entity went viral, adding a seriously spooky layer to the already mysterious circumstances surrounding her drowning. The Bringing has had a lot of talent almost involved, and for anyone acquainted with the story, it's not hard to understand why. It's absolutely terrifying. Today brings word that Jeremy Lovering (In Fear) could direct the horror story for Sony Pictures.
Deadline reports that Lovering is in negotiations to direct The Bringing from a script written by Brandon and Phillip Murphy.
The film is inspired by the Elisa Lam story, a young woman who was found dead in a water tank on the roof of the Hotel Cecil. The script has nothing really to do with that tragedy, but it created a germ of an idea focusing on a man investigating a death at the hotel and the nightmare he stumbles into.
As previously reported, Nic Refn was once slated to direct:
Well this is a bummer, hearing Nic Refn will not direct The Bringing at Sony as negotiations have stalled.

Exclusive: Sony Pictures is negotiating with Jeremy Lovering to direct The Bringing, the horror script by Brandon and Phillip Murphy based on actual events. Matt Tolmach and Daniela Cretu are producing. This has been top priority at Sony, and at one time had Nicolas Winding Refn circling. The pic is based on Elisa Lam, who was found dead in the water tanks on the roof of the Cecil Hotel in Los Angeles. That’s the place that killers like Richard Ramirez called home at one time or another, and where suicides have occurred. Footage of Lam’s bizarre, inexplicable behavior in an elevator before her death became a massive Internet sensation, and this has been turned into the story of the man investigating her death, and the nightmare he stumbles into. Cretu’s First Born Films developed the script that was brought in by Mtp’s Kate Checchi and Brad Zimmerman.

In Fear is not your typical horror film. There are no (visible) monsters; no gore; and not a lot of action. The film follows a pair of teens on the way to a weekend at a music festival. They get really, really lost trying to get to the hotel, and the longer they are driving around in circles, the more their relationship devolves. We spoke with writer/director Jeremy Lovering about the haunted legend that inspired the tale, and how he went about finding his fantastic leading actors.
Where did the idea for In Fear come from?
Funny enough, I love the woods. I find them a very reassuring and comforting place. When I was a kid I would go and stay overnight in the forest. I found it very comforting. I went to Ireland one time and read about this family who were Anglo-Irish, they lived on a massive...

Following on from our interview with In Fear’s director Jeremy Lovering, HeyUGuys were privileged to have the opportunity to speak with the films leading man Iain De Caestecker. From reminiscing about shooting short films with his brother, the conversation quickly spiralled into a discussion of confronting the unconventional, acting on instinct, creating a study in fear and collaborating with an audience and watching himself In Fear.
Why a career in acting? Was there that one inspirational moment?
I don’t know if there was one specific moment, but I suppose it was when I was younger. My brother and I would watch movies and then make our own short films. They were pretty bad in hindsight but they were the kind of moments when we would watch them back and feel proud and excited. Those are the moments that made me want to act.
With no script In Fear goes against convention.

Full disclosure: a theatrical screening of this film was provided by Sinister Cinema. Director/writer: Jeremy Lovering. Cast: Iain De Caestecker, Alice Englert and Allen Leech. Jeremy Lovering's first feature film, In Fear, played in twenty-eight Canadian cities March 13th, 2014. Sinister Cinema hosted this one night engagement. This horror fan managed to see the screening and the trip was well worth it. In Fear is an indie horror and thriller title, which was filmed in the United Kingdom. Full of tense situations and surprises, In Fear is one of the best indie features this film fan has seen. The story is simple in nature. A new, young couple are heading out to a music festival together, but Tom (Iain De Caestecker) wants to take a detour, to an isolated Irish hotel. Lucy (Alice Englert) plays along. And soon, this couple is driving off into the remote Irish meadows.

You know those movies where people are driving around, lost in the woods or on some back road? You know the ones. No matter what they do, they just can’t seem to find their way to the highway. Generally, they end in the suggestion that they have been dead the entire time, died in a car accident or something, and the entire film was their purgatory. In Fear masquerades as one of these films, but it’s not. All of the familiar elements are there. I even turned to my wife while watching, and told her I already knew how the film would end. I guess I should be happy that they didn’t take the predictable approach, and instead surprised me, right? Well, I would probably be grateful if there were any sort of ending to the film. It’s not that I felt the goings on needed...

Ahead of the home entertainment release of In Fear, HeyUGuys had the opportunity to speak with the film’s director Jeremy Lovering. From stepping out onto the metaphorical dance floor to discuss film as a dance, Jeremy shared his thoughts with us on film as a pay check, In Fear’s filmic influences, the evolution of genre, and how science can explain one’s affection or lack of affection for horror.
Film is a dance between the writer, the director, the participants, and of course the audience. The goal of course is to create something that you are going to put out there into the world and which is going to be independent of you. It needs to create its own identity, but as you have spoken about in previous interviews you need to make it to be a good watch, but you need to give it an identity and personality.

★★★★☆Over the years, four-wheeled vehicles have proved themselves as worthy settings for tense thrillers, Spielberg's Duel (1971) and Tarantino's Death Proof (2007) being two of the most successful examples. With In Fear (2013), Sherlock scribe Jeremy Lovering takes on the premise of a home invasion, confines the action into a car and documents events in real-time. As a result, it's a darkly atmospheric journey to a destination that's satisfyingly difficult to approximate. After a mysterious altercation with some locals in a country pub, young couple Tom (Iain De Caestecker) and Lucy (Beautiful Creatures' Alice Englert) set off to spend the weekend at a music festival.

Perhaps the only news of note this week is that in a move echoing what they did with Breaking Bad, Netflix has swooped in and gained rights to the TV series of From Dusk Til Dawn made in the states for Robert Rodriguez’s new El Rey network cable channel. Netflix will stream the episodes the day after they air in the states every week, curiously they are still billing this as ‘A Netflix Original’ when this isn’t the case necessarily. I have no idea as to the quality of this, the film From Dusk Til Dawn was one of my favourites when I was a teenager but how you drag that out into a ten part TV show I don’t know, let alone a possible second series. I watched the trailer and it looks solid and well-made as opposed to a cheap cash in and features Don Johnson...

The Butler didn't do it for Oscar voters, but there are sharper ideas in some of last year's under-the-radar thrillers
If a film seemingly made for the express purpose of piling up Oscar nominations then receives precisely none, does it make a sound? Well, yes and no. Lee Daniels' The Butler (Entertainment, 12) was a surprise summer hit in the Us, where audiences weary of monsters fighting robots were apparently up for a windy dose of all-star, semi-fictionalised civil rights history, but that doesn't mean it has anything to say.
Awards voters, oddly, couldn't see the hokey Forrest Gump parallels in Forest Whitaker's Cecil Gaines, humble White House butler to every president from Eisenhower to Reagan. A noble cypher who stoically pours tea while history is made around him, he's a less-than-riveting presence around whom to centre the narrative; there's more going on back home, where his radical Black Panther...
