While Germany wasn’t a significant contributor during the first revival of slasher movies, its few offerings are an interesting time capsule. These movies show how the country interpreted the subgenre during its postmodern era. Of all the homegrown German efforts from the early 2000s, The Pool (also known as Swimming Pool: Der Tod feiert mit) perhaps brings up the most nostalgia despite its vanishing act over the years. Boris von Sychowski’s vaguely remembered slasher didn’t make a huge splash back then, although that wasn’t from a lack of trying.
German slasher The Pool is openly set in Prague, yet the English dialogue, the rampant Hollywood movie clichés, and the generic pop-rock soundtrack all make American audiences feel more at home. The glaring Czech architecture and various accents, however, are constant reminders that the characters themselves are far from home. The adults and authority figures are either...

Viktor Dvorak has been cast in “Havel,” a biopic of Václav Havel, as the Czech playwright, dissident and national leader. Anna Geislerova, who starred in Oscar nominated “Zelary,” plays his wife, Olga Havlova.
Jiri Bartoska, the president of Karlovy Vary Film Festival, will appear in the film as “Professor,” inspired by Czech philosopher Jan Patocka.
The pic will follow Havel’s life from the Prague Spring in 1968 to the Velvet Revolution in 1989, when Havel became Czechoslovakia’s president. As well as covering Havel’s experiences as a dissident and his time in prison, it will also focus on his relationship with Olga.
The film is helmed by Czech filmmaker Slávek Horák, who was chosen as one of Variety’s 10 Directors to Watch in 2015. It is Horák’s second feature film following his 2015 feature debut, “Home Care,” which won lead actress prizes for Alena Mihulová at Karlovy Vary, and the Czech Lions.

The names Josef Gabčík and Jan Kubiš may not mean anything to you, but they represent patriotism at its finest for the people of the Czech Republic. And once you see the Sean Ellis-directed Anthropoid, you’ll know exactly why.
Co-written by Anthony Frewin, the WWII thriller tells the true story of the aforementioned Gabčík and Kubiš, played by Irish stars Cillian Murphy and Jamie Dornan, respectively. The British-trained Czech parachutists were among a group of men sent on a secret mission, titled Operation Anthropoid, to assassinate SS General Reinhard Heydrich.
The Reich’s third in command after Hitler and Himmler, Heydrich brought a reign of terror to the former Czechoslovakia that earned him the title of “The Butcher of Prague.” Gabčík and Kubiš’ heroism may have made them legends, but it is their personal and internal struggles that audiences will be able to connect to: Murphy’s Gabčík...

There are no happy endings in Sean Ellis’ World War II drama “Anthropoid.” But should a new plan to honor the heroes portrayed within the new war drama pan out, the true story’s gruesome history might be forever altered in an unexpectedly positive way.
Ellis’ latest film follows the true story of Czechoslovakian resistance fighters Josef Gabčík (Cillian Murphy) and Jan Kubiš (Jamie Dornan), who undertook the nearly impossible mission to assassinate SS General Reinhard Heydrich in Prague in 1942. The plan ultimately resulted in the deaths of Kubiš, Gabčík and five other Czechoslovakian fighters — and while Heydrich didn’t die immediately as planned, he did succumb to his injuries soon after, altering the course of the war forever — and while the soldiers have long been national heroes, over seven decades have passed without a proper burial for their bodies.

Just in case you forgot how evil Nazis were (still are?), Sean Ellis plots a two-hour reminder in his latest film, Anthropoid. Ellis and co-writer Anthony Frewin create a true biographical thriller at heart, one that highlights how Czech and Slovak soldiers fought against Hitler’s occupation in Czechoslovakia during WWII. The duo’s passion for historical accuracy is coupled with true-to-life implications, yet the film clunks on and on in the name of depressing, heartbreaking warcrimes. Filmmakers shouldn’t shy away from hard realities, but by the time Ellis counterbalances what seems to be a dragging, sullen narrative, we’re an hour-and-a-half past saving, no matter how grimly captivating a finale is cued up.
In 1942, a secret mission was carried out that would succeed in assassinating SS General Reinhard Heydrich (Detlef Bothe), Hitler’s third-in-command who became known as the “Butcher Of Prague.” Code named Operation: Anthropoid, Czechoslovakia’s...

In projects like “28 Days Later...,” “Sunshine,” and “In the Heart of the Sea,” Cillian Murphy has proven himself through the years as an astounding and versatile talent. But he’s yet to receive the recognition he deserves. With the upcoming Nazi thriller “Anthropoid,” he may get his shot at the gold! Historical dramas have often fared well with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and with the pedigree of talent attached to writer-director Sean Ellis’ forthcoming true World War II story, this project is shaping up to be a contender across the board. Murphy and Jamie Dornan (“Fifty Shades of Grey”) star as Josef Gabcik and Jan Kubis, respectively, both of whom are Czechoslovakian operatives who are tasked with assassinating Hitler’s right-hand man, Reinhard Heydrich, in 1942 Prague. It’s the sort of resistance move that would change the war within their German-occupied Czechoslovakia and beyond. The feature...

The first trailer for World War II thriller Anthropoid has arrived online, starring Cillian Murphy and Jamie Dornan as two Czech operatives tasked with the assassination of an SS officer.
With the movie set to arrive later this summer, it’s a wonder why we’ve heard so little about it until now – especially with a trailer that’s this intriguing. Cashback director Sean Ellis sits at the helm of this espionage pic, whose title refers to a specific mission where two operatives set about hunting down one of Hitler’s highest-ranking officials, SS Reinhard Heydrich. While the cinematic canon includes a lot of World War II thrillers, and many that involve espionage, Anthropoid looks like it’s planning to pack quite a punch thanks to the performances of its strong acting line-up.
Speaking of the cast, Murphy and Dornan are joined by a stellar support roster that includes Toby Jones,...

It was just this week with the arrival of the Denial trailer that we commented it wouldn’t be awards season without a Holocaust drama. While Anthropoid is centered moreso around taking down Nazis and it arrives just before the standard award season, we’ll count it. Coming from director Sean Ellis (Metro Manila, Cashback), the first trailer has now arrived.
Led by Cillian Murphy and Jamie Dornan, they star as a pair of Allied soldiers who attempt to take down an SS General. Also starring Charlotte Le Bon, Anna Geislerová, Harry Lloyd, Alena Mihulová, Marcin Dorociński, Bill Milner, Sam Keeley, Jiří Simek, Mish Boyko, Václav Neuzil, Andrej Polák and Toby Jones, check out the trailer, photos, and poster below.
Anthropoid is based on the extraordinary true story of Operation Anthropoid, the World War II mission to assassinate SS General Reinhard Heydrich. The Reich’s third in command after Hitler and Himmler, Heydrich was the main architect behind the Final Solution and the leader of occupying Nazi forces in Czechoslovakia whose reign of terror prompted Allied soldiers (Cillian Murphy and Jamie Dornan) to hatch a top-secret mission that would change the face of Europe forever.
Anthropoid opens on August 12, 2016.

After first hearing about it in March, we now have the initial look at Jamie Dornan and Cillian Murphy in director Sean Ellis’s World War II thriller Anthropoid. Ellis wrote the script with Anthony Frewin and is directing the real-life story about the attempted assassination of a prominent Nazi official. The title refers to the codename for the Allied operation to take down Reinhard Heydrich, the high-ranking SS officer who helped oversee the Holocaust. Seen as the number three Nazi – behind Hitler and Himmler – he was naturally a target for assassination. The men chosen for the task were Czechoslovakian army soldiers in exile (Dornan and Murphy), recruited and trained by British forces to parachute into their homeland and target the man known as The Butcher Of Prague. Already aboard alongside the leading pair are Charlotte Le Bon and Anna Geislerová, with the cast swelling before production began to include Toby Jones,...

He has been praised in the past for being able to eloquently capture in his films what other Czechs are still grappling with today. Most of his films deal with the mark left upon contemporary Czech society by decades of Soviet rule. He has explored these themes with great success in several celebrated black comedies and even in his most widely known work, the serio-comic World War II film Divided Fall.
Honeymoon finds him working once more with longtime collaborator Petr Jarchovský on perhaps his least comedic film yet. The story begins with the wedding of Tereza (Anna Geislerová) and Radim (Stanislav Majer), which seems...

According to the program for this year’s Vancouver International Film Festival, director Jan Hrebejk and writer Petr Jarchovsky have visited many times with their collaborations. What is different this time is the type of film they have brought. Supposedly beginning a new trilogy in “blame and punishment”, this psychological thriller is new territory for their oeuvre and if the next two are as good or better than this, I say they shouldn’t stop at just three.
On the surface Nevinnost [Innocence] is a tale about the sanctity of a young girl’s word. No, in terms of a crime such as this, even the smallest chance of truth means you...

On offer this week is a veritable gallery of the eclectic and the eccentric as M. Night Shyamalan goes R-rated, Edward Norton goes green, Werner Herzog goes to the Antarctic, and two of Herzog's fellow countrymen go to California to climb a big rock very, very quickly.
"Beauty in Trouble"
Czech director Jan Hrebejk and writer Petr Jarchovský continue their longtime collaborative partnership with this dense ensemble drama loosely inspired by Robert Graves's poem of the same name. This time, the duo who balanced humor with drama in the Oscar-nominated Holocaust-set "Divided We Fall," turn to the devastating series of floods that swept Prague in 2002, and tell the story of Marcela (Anna Geislerová), an overworked mother of two living in squalor. When her ne'er do well husband is taken in by the police, she's courted by a well-to-do businessman (Josef Abrhám) and Marcela is forced to...
