A gala presentation at the 2023 UK Jewish Film Festival, sees a widowed Jewish man travel to Paris to support an old friend who has suffered a heart attack. Staying with his daughter, her partner and baby, he realises that she’s deeply unhappy. At first he thinks her partner must be to blame, but the truth is more complicated and will test the depth of his love for her as well as giving him insights into his own life back in Israel.
Love is entangled with powerlessness and drama with comedy in this slight but beautifully played tale. Alma (Sivan Levy) has grown up a lot since she last saw her father, Shimon (Sasson Gabay), and although the bond between them never feels fragile, they need to renegotiate their relationship as they begin to understand each other in new ways. Her knowingly obnoxious, self-destructive behaviour seems to stem in part.

"You live with a man for 40 years and you don't even know him." Greenwich Ent. has revealed the official US trailer for an Israeli indie comedy called Karaoke, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Moshe Rosenthal. This first premiered at last year's Tribeca Film Festival, and also played at the Jerusalem, Hamptons, Raindance, and Tallinn Black Nights Film Festivals last year. Now it's set for US release in select theaters this November. A bittersweet comedy about a middle-class suburban couple in their 60s who are drawn to their new neighbor, a charismatic bachelor who has karaoke evenings at his apartment. Described in reviews as a "fantastic offbeat comedy" that's "smart, funny, & beautiful." The film stars Sasson Gabay, Rita Shukrun, and Lior Ashkenazi. This looks a smart commentary on modern society in Tel Aviv, not only about gender dynamics, but also about social status and relationships and so much more.

Family disputes and conspiracies take center stage in “The Other Story,” veteran helmer Avi Nesher’s lively drama exploring a hot button issue: the divide between Israel’s secular Jews and the ultra-Orthodox. The fluid narrative plays out against the backdrop of a Jerusalem riven by multiple conflicts as two dysfunctional families separately arrive at an understanding of what is important in life and are ultimately able to dial back their desire to deal in inflexible absolutes. Like Nesher’s other features of the past decade this smartly cast and smoothly directed drama involves an investigation. It’s a neat script ploy that allows loyalties to shift, revelations to surface and hidden agendas to appear, while keeping the action pacey and the audience guessing. After breaking box office records in Israel, Nesher’s entertaining 18th film will start its theatrical rollout on both coasts through Strand Releasing.
Actually, “The Other Story” boasts multiple investigations.

Adult sister and brother roommates Sophia (Anne-Élisabeth Bossé) and Karim (Patrick Hivon) share a codependent (borderline incestuous?) sibling bond, occasionally under the fragmented roof of their divorced but amicably cohabiting parents (Sasson Gabai and Micheline Bernard). When Karim accompanies Sophia to an abortion and falls for Sophia’s gynecologist, Éloïse (Évelyne Brochu), their new courtship throws a wrench in Sophia’s platonic ideal siblinghood.

Despite all her evident idiosyncrasies, there’s something familiar about Sophia (Anne Élisabeth Bossé), the focus of Quebecois debutante Monia Chokri’s comedy “A Brother’s Love,” which gets the Un Certain Regard sidebar of Cannes off to a springy if overlong and somewhat stumbling start. Sophia may have a PhD in political philosophy but she lives a remarkably unexamined life. And in that she is enabled by a co-dependent relationship with her attractive psychologist brother Karim (Patrick Hivon) which traps them both in an eternally arrested state of emotional adolescence. The familiarity springs from a realisation that the male version of Sophia’s character is such a common staple of the modern comedy as to be nearly a cliché: the lovable manchild whose emotional immaturity is actually part of his charm.
However these traits distilled into a woman by Chokri’s promising if overindulgent screenplay and Bossé’s admirably uncompromised performance,...

Beasts of Burden: Levi’s Slapstick Heist Film Runs Amuck
For his sophomore film, Israeli director Reshef Levi inserts Patrick Stewart alongside the likes of Sasson Gabai, Moni Moshonov, and Moshe Ivgy for a comedic bank heist in Hunting Elephants. While there’s mild amusement to be had amongst this group of sassy old codgers, the whole endeavor feels a bit forced. Snippets of characters directly addressing the camera frequently distract as Levi and co-writer Regey Levi cut across timespans in attempt to give the scenario added depth. Reinforcing stereotypes rather than playing with them, Levi’s broad scenario feels tonally akin to something like Last Vegas (2013) but entrenched in more archaic stagnation.

Chicago – The title event of “Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem” is a prison sentence with no predictable day of release. The prisoner is Viviane (a fascinating Ronit Elkabetz), a soft-spoken middle-aged woman well beyond the point of a content unhappiness. She is trapped to a farce, as the divorce laws of Israel demand that a husband agree to the divorce before it can be finalized, with three rabbis and a lawyer each to discuss the event.
Viviane’s desire to start a new life away from her current husband Elisha (Simon Abkarian) becomes a hell on earth as he proves an unmovable object, a warden with no empathy who refuses to show up for many of the hearings (he doesn’t really have to unless it gets really bad, according to law). It takes him about a year and a half to finally appear first time, and even...

Horse & Carriage: The Elkabetzs’ Kafkaesque Interpretation of So-Called Sacred Institution
The third film in a trilogy examining the relationship between a husband and wife comes full circle with Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem, a viciously astute examination of Israel’s divorce procedures. Brother and sister directing duo Roni and Schlomi Elkabetz began their enterprise back in 2004 with To Take a Wife, which continued with 7 Days in 2007, though it isn’t necessary to have seen either of these features to appreciate what they’re doing here with this deliciously crafted drama that’s as infuriating as it is highly engrossing. If on paper it sounds like a tedious slog of a subject matter, put aside those assumptions because the Elkabetzs’ have made an invigorating, emotionally charged powder keg, a film that simultaneously harpoons the misogynistic practices of the rabbinical courts just as it gives powerful agency to its highly determined female protagonist.

The U.S. premiere of Niki Caro’s McFarland USA will close out the 30th fest. Based on the 1987 true story and starring Kevin Costner and Maria Bello, the film follows novice runners from McFarland, an economically challenged town in California’s farm-rich Central Valley, as they give their all to build a cross-country team under the direction of Coach Jim White (Costner), a newcomer to their predominantly Latino high school. The unlikely band of runners overcomes the odds to forge not only a championship cross-country team but an enduring legacy as well.
