The Hollywood Foreign Press Association took another step forward toward a revitalized Golden Globes on Monday by announcing the nominees for the 2023 awards show, set to take place next month.
HFPA president Helen Hoehne kicked off the festivities just after 5 a.m. inside the Beverly Hilton by revealing that George Lopez had to bow out of presenter duties after testing positive for Covid-19, proving that while there are lingering questions about how the industry will respond to a resuscitated show, there’s still a pandemic to contend with. (As such, all press, publicists and attendees of the nominations event had to provide proof of a negative Covid-19 test in order to attend and wear a mask while inside the ballroom.)
George Lopez’s daughter, Mayan Lopez, still turned up as expected and was joined by their fellow Lopez vs. Lopez co-star Selenis Leyva.

Nominations for the 80th Golden Globe Awards came Monday, as always, with their share of snubs of surprises, but this year spread the wealth across a healthy number of different distributors for film and TV: 11 for TV and 17 for film.
Sitting on top of the TV categories was a tie between two of today’s largest streaming competitors: HBO Max and Netflix. With 14 nominations each, there is one key difference that set them apart: the number of programs that were recognized within those 14 nods. HBO Max spread them over seven acclaimed programs, while Netflix’s sum had only five.

Golden Globes producers have a decision to make as the kudocast returns in January after a year off: How much should they address the elephant in the room, a.k.a. the Hollywood Foreign Press Association controversies that led to last year’s hiatus?
For executive producer Jesse Collins, who’s showrunning this year’s Globes telecast, it’s a balance. Speaking to Variety on Monday morning immediately after the Globes nominations announcement at the Beverly Hilton, Collins said the HFPA’s reform efforts will be addressed — but they won’t consume the show.
“I think the HFPA has done a great job of just dealing with all that stuff over the past year,” Collins said. “I’m sure we’ll touch on it in places, but really it’s about the that nominations just happened. A lot of incredible people got nominated. People work really hard to get those nominations.

Pick your jaw up off the floor because, yes, it really did happen. The 2021 Oscars finally occurred Sunday—close to two months late from its usual lofty perch atop the award season schedule, due to the pandemic that sank its teeth into more than just the movie business last year just weeks after Parasite made history, but it happened. And it happened like never before. With Steven Soderbergh guiding the reliably unwieldy ship as producer, the Oscar-winning director having agreed to take the reins (along with Jesse Collins and Stacey Sher) despite not knowing what sort of show they'd even be able to put on due to public health guidelines, the 93rd Academy Awards unfolded from both its...

Slowly but surely, first-time Oscar producers Steven Soderbergh, Stacey Sher, and Jesse Collins are filling in the gaps on the looming Oscar show. Details have been coming thick and fast in the past week as plans solidified, and nominees and their guests make their travel arrangements for the two-month-delayed Academy Awards (televised live on April 25 on ABC at 8 p.m. Et/5 p.m. Pt. and in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide). Oscars 2021 could not have been accomplished without the delay, the producers said at last Saturday’s press conference, from safety concerns to increased access to vaccinations.
Their goal: to stage a Zoom-less affair packed (at a safe distance) with as many live human nominees and presenters (each allowed one guest) as possible, the producers reiterated. “This is the walking definition of trying to build an airplane while it’s in the air,” said Soderbergh.

On Sunday, February 9, 2020, history was made at the 92nd annual Academy Awards when, for the first time, a foreign-language film took the coveted Best Picture prize — along with three others including Best Director, Original Screenplay and the newly named Best International Feature. The feat was momentous and indeed a cause for celebration as I witnessed first-hand traveling after the Governors Ball to the packed-to-the-rafters celebration thrown by distributor Neon at the Soho House in West Hollywood. The place was so crowded on various levels you literally had to squeeze yourself into the room where Director Bong made his triumphant appearance, gave a quick address to the crowd, and then at well past 1 a.

When the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on Tuesday that Jesse Collins, Stacey Sher and Steven Soderbergh would produce the 93rd Oscars, the organization’s press release included a photo of the three producers.
Collins was dressed in a white shirt and tan blazer in his photo, Sher in a black jacket. And Soderbergh, the filmmaker who won an Oscar for directing 2000’s “Traffic,” wore what appeared to be a lavish silk military-style jacket, complete with epaulets on the shoulders and a jaunty pink beret atop his head.
He looked, essentially, as if he belonged alongside the Beatles on the cover of their classic 1967 album “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.”
And in fact, it’s not the first time Soderbergh has used that particular photo as his publicity shot, or the first time he’s used it in connection with an awards show. The idiosyncratic director of “sex,...

Director Steven Soderbergh and producers Stacey Sher and Jesse Collins will produce the 93rd Academy Awards on April 25, 2021, the Academy announced on Tuesday.
The announcement did not specify whether the show would be in-person or virtual, a decision that will not be made until the course of the Covid-19 pandemic is clearer.
While Collins is a television producer with a long history of producing live awards shows like the Grammys, BET Awards and Soul Train Awards and Sher is a veteran producer with Oscar nominations for “Django Unchained” and “Erin Brockovich,” the presence of Soderbergh on the producing team is a surprise and something of a coup for Academy president David Rubin.
Soderbergh, who won the Best Director Oscar for “Traffic” in 2000, is an adventurous and iconoclastic film and television director whose work includes “sex, lies and videotape,” “Contagion,” “Out of Sight,” the “Oceans” movies, “Magic Mike” and the recent...

The Academy has chosen three first-time Oscar producers for the delayed 2021 show: Emmy-nominated Grammy Show producer Jesse Collins will team with filmmakers Stacey Sher and Steven Soderbergh, who worked together on Oscar-winner “Erin Brockovich,” to produce the 93rd Oscars which, due to the pandemic will air live on ABC and around the world on Sunday, April 25, two months later than usual.
There has been some debate about what form the Oscar show will take, whether in-person or in hybrid form like the Emmys. Clearly, the Academy will do what it takes to keep participants safe. Directing Oscar winner Soderbergh (“Traffic”) has earned recent praise, not only for his filmmaking, but for leading the taskforce at the Directors Guild of America that has set Covid safety guidelines for the industry.

In what could be the most challenging producing assignment ever for an Oscar show, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today tapped Jesse Collins, Stacey Sher and Steven Soderbergh to produce the 93rd Annual Academy Awards. The show is set for Sunday April 25, their latest date ever, due to delays caused by the coronavirus crisis.
This will be the first involvement in steering the Oscar show for each of them, though Soderbergh is no stranger to the event; he won the 2000 Directing Oscar for Traffic after also being nominated in the same category that year for Erin Brockovich. His numerous directing credits include sex, lies, and videotape, the Oceans trilogy, Magic Mike and his latest debuting this week, Let Them All Talk.
Sher, a veteran producer, is a two-time Best Picture Oscar nominee for Django Unchained and Erin Brockovich, the latter repping a previous professional pairing with Soderbergh,...

DJ Cassidy’s popular “Pass the Mic” webcast series is going to TV on Thanksgiving weekend… and going totally ’80s. BET’s Nov. 29 broadcast of “The Soul Train Awards” will be immediately followed by a second prime-time special that will bring Cassidy’s all-star medleys, usually seen via Twitch and YouTube, to a network for the first time. Netflix is doubling down on its reality slate – ordering a new series from Marie Kondo, handing two season renewals to Love Is Blind and The Circle and renewing Rhythm + Flow.
The streamer has been recently stepping up its game in the non-scripted space, with Love Is Blind, produced by Red Arrow’s Kinetic Content, particularly getting attention and becoming Netflix’s top show in the U.S. at the end of February, two weeks after its launch.
The show, which is hosted by Vanessa Lachey and her husband Nick Lachey, follows a group of single men and women as they enter solo pods in the hope of finding love. It has been renewed for a second and third season and is currently casting the second run in Chicago.

Netflix has ordered its first musical competition series, “Rhythm + Flow,” which will feature Cardi B, T.I. and Chance the Rapper as judges.
Unlike some of the other musical series, like NBC’s “The Voice” or ABC’s “American Idol,” the Netflix series will exclusively look for hip-hop artists. The multi-city competition will unfold over 10 hour-long episodes beginning in fall 2019.
Auditions will begin this fall across the United States, including the judges’ hometowns of New York, Atlanta and Chicago respectively. In each audition location, established rappers who are from that city will serve as guest judges to help find the best-unsigned hip-hop artists.
