It’s here, the newest Netflix thriller adapted from one of Harlan Coben’s ludicrously twist-packed, secret-filled crime mystery novels. This one comes adapted by Danny Brocklehurst with the same UK team that made The Five, Safe, The Stranger and Stay Close, and once again stars Richard Armitage in a central role.
Fool Me Once is the story of military helicopter pilot Maya Stern, a captain who loses her career in a scandal and suffers two bereavements in short succession. It’s fast-paced, kind of ridiculous viewing that takes you down an extremely twisty path before tying everything up in a big not-exactly-watertight-but-it’ll-do-fine knot – which makes it pretty perfect viewing for a brain-fogged New Year’s Day after all of December’s indulgences.
Find out more about the cast of this one below, and happy binge-watching!

My guest this week is Sian Clifford.
Her delicately balanced, tragi-comic portrayal of the brilliantly deadpan Claire in smash hit series Fleabag both won her a Bafta and allowed her to utter the immortal words, “I look like a pencil” in reference to Claire’s legendary hair mishap. In short, Clifford made an indelible mark on viewers.
Among some of her post-Fleabag roles: starring opposite Matthew Macfadyen in Quiz, as one half of the couple accused of cheating on UK gameshow Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?; playing mother to Thomasin McKenzie’s character in the BBC TV adaptation of Kate Atkinson’s novel Life After Life, and starring with Saoirse Ronan in the film See How They Run.
Clifford’s latest role is in Unstable, a new Netflix comedy series created by and starring Rob Lowe and his son John Owen Lowe, executive produced by Victor Fresco of My Name is Earl fame.

Emmy-nominated actress Naomi Grossman, best known as fan-favorite “Pepper,” the first multi-season crossover character from Ryan Murphy’s hit television series “American Horror Story,” has announced a “raucous, irreverent love letter to AHS fans and the dubious art of self-compromise” in this limited theatrical run of her new solo show, “American Whore Story.”
The four-week engagement at the Skylight Theater in Los Angeles begins June 1, 2023. Tickets are now on sale at www.americanwhorestory.com.
“I still get fans telling me they thought ‘Pepper’ was a real person. Those who think I’m some monosyllabic grunter are in for a surprise!” Grossman laughs. “My comedic sensibility is probably my most obvious, defining characteristic, yet it’s something horror fans don’t necessarily know about me. This story wouldn’t exist without AHS, or its fanbase. They made me, so I made this for them. It’s my love letter to AHS fans,...

Hulu has picked up U.S. rights to the Australian series Vanishing Act, a mystery crime drama based on the real-life disappearance of Australian high-roller Melissa Caddick.
Caddick was an Australian businesswoman who allegedly swindled her family and friends out of millions of dollars to bankroll her lavish lifestyle of designer clothes, fast cars, expensive real estate and flash holidays.
But the day after police raided her home, Caddick disappeared. Months later, her shoe is found, washed up on a deserted beach – with her disembodied foot inside. The case spawned major media attention and wild speculation that Caddick was murdered, or that she deliberately cut off her own foot and went into hiding.
The three-part series, produced by Screentime Banijay for Nine Network Australia, stars Kate Atkinson (Wentworth) as Caddick, alongside Colin Friels, Jerome Velinsky, and Maya Stange. Dcd Rights is handling international sales.

Life After Life, Kate Atkinson’s acclaimed 2013 novel that’s now a four-part BBC drama, is founded on the bruising truth that existence is unbearably fragile. Its world, our world, is a dangerous place pitted with obstacles. It’s the story of Ursula, a character born in 1910, who dies and is reborn in a continuous loop. Each time Ursula falls foul of life’s lethal traps, she begins again, not remembering her lives before but not quite forgetting them either. Her past deaths leave her with tugging instincts – don’t step there, don’t take his hand, don’t linger – that gradually extend her life and, if well-managed, those of the people she loves.
For Ursula, death waits in all places – in the knot of umbilical cord around a baby’s neck, inside a rolling wave and beneath an open window. Death waits equally in a pandemic and in wartime...

Two of the most respected practitioners working in the entertainment industry have slammed the U.K. government’s ongoing plans for broadcasters Channel 4 and BBC.
Earlier this month, U.K. Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries confirmed plans to sell Channel 4, citing the need to compete with the global streamers and saying that the proceeds of the sale would be put into independent production and creative skills in priority parts of the country.
Sections of the industry did not take kindly to the plan, leading to arguments and counter-arguments in the U.K. media.
Tessa Ross, BAFTA winner for outstanding British contribution to cinema, whose credits include “Billy Elliott,” “Slumdog Millionaire,” “Last King of Scotland,” “Ex Machina” and “Room,” and who has served as controller of film and drama at Channel 4, and as British Film Institute and National Film and Television School governor, is one of those unhappy with the decision.

Kate Atkinson’s bestselling 2013 novel “Life After Life” has been brought to vivid life as a four-part BBC series by a heavyweight team.
The story centers on Ursula Todd who dies one night in 1910 before she can draw her first breath. On that same night in 1910, Ursula is born and survives. She finds herself time and again, living and dying in different circumstances only to be reborn into a new, alternative iteration of life once more. Ursula navigates her way through an era spanning two world wars, an encounter with Hitler and major life events.
At just 21, Thomasin McKenzie, who plays Ursula, already has a list of impressive credits including “Leave No Trace,” “Jojo Rabbit” and “Last Night in Soho.” The four-part series is produced by BBC Studios’ House Productions, run by co-CEOs Juliette Howell, Emmy and Rts nominee for “Brexit: The Uncivil War,” and Tessa Ross, BAFTA winner for outstanding British contribution to cinema,...

When Foxtel first began to craft with Fremantle Wentworth back in 2011, the hope was it would sit comfortably alongside the service’s premium HBO and BBC dramas.
While based on Reg Watson’s long-running ’80s drama Prisoner, and suitably honouring its legacy, it was not designed to a be remake. The desire was to see a modern reimagining of the characters; one that was ambitious and bold.

Originally created by Lara Radulovich and David Hannam, Fremantle Australia CEO Ian Hogg pitched Foxtel director of television Brian Walsh the series over a meal in Cannes.

BBC will be adapting Kate Atkinson's bestselling novel Life After Life into a four-part series that's set for release on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. The book was previously shortlisted for a Women's Prize For Fiction and won a Costa Book Award in 2013, so we know it's going to be good. James Graham, creator of hit ITV, AMC and Sony show “Quiz,” and writer of Emmy nominated “Brexit: The Uncivil War,” has created crime drama “Sherwood” for U.K. broadcaster BBC.
Inspired in part by real events, the six-part series is set in the Nottinghamshire mining village where Graham grew up. The contemporary series sees two murders shatter an already fractured community leading to one of the largest manhunts in British history. Suspicion is rife and the tragic murders threaten to inflame historic divisions sparked during the miners’ strike that tore families apart three decades before.
Graham reunites with House Productions, the company behind “Brexit,” for the series. He will serve as an executive producer on the series. Lewis Arnold (“Time”) is lead director and an executive producer, and the producer is Rebecca Hodgson (“The Irregulars”). Juliette Howell, Tessa Ross and Harriet Spencer are executive producers for House Productions and Ben Irving...

Hello International Insiders, hope you’re getting into the Christmas spirit. Tom Grater here delivering a sack full of attention-grabbing headlines from this week of film and TV news.
Insuring The Future
World-beating lifeline: Deadline hears that other nations look on enviously at the UK’s £500M ($665M) coronavirus production insurance scheme, so it’s little wonder that British producers want more of a good thing. Led by Pact CEO John McVay, the film and TV industry is in talks with the government to extend the initiative so that shoots are covered up until June next year, rather than the current cut off of February. Given how receptive ministers have been so far, it will be a surprise if the discussions are not successful.
Why the extension matters: The hope is that it will capture a rush of productions that get cameras rolling during the longer daylight hours of spring...

The BBC has commissioned a four-part adaptation of Kate Atkinson’s bestselling novel “Life After Life” from House Productions.
The story centers on Ursula Todd who dies one night in 1910 before she can draw her first breath. On that same night in 1910, Ursula is born and survives. She finds herself time and again, living and dying in different circumstances only to be reborn into a new, alternative iteration of life once more. Ursula navigates her way through a critical era which spans two world wars, an encounter with Hitler and major life events.
The drama is adapted by playwright and screenwriter Bash Doran and will be directed by BAFTA-winning director John Crowley. Kate Ogborn (“The End of the F***ing World”) will produce. Doran and Crowley will be executive producers, as will Atkinson.
The novel was published in 2013 and won the Costa Book Award.

Hollywood’s insatiable appetite for existing IP doesn’t appear like it will be quenched any time soon, especially with the effect of the Covid shutdowns continuing to reverberate throughout the industry. Marta Dusseldorp in ‘Wentworth’ (Photo credit: Sarah Enticknap).
In a world away from A Place to Call Home, Marta Dusseldorp has donned the prison track suit with a guest role in Foxtel’s Wentworth, which resumes shooting this week.
Her character Sheila Bausch, a senior figure in the True Path cult, is on remand, charged with the murder of nine people at the cult’s retreat.
Described as highly intelligent, charismatic and manipulative, Sheila worked as the personal secretary for True Path’s founder Dr Mendel (Brian Vriends).
The Fremantle production re-starts after shutting down on March 23, just before a planned hiatus. The show has the advantage of being shot in its own large building in Melbourne, which has the flexibility of moving scenes set in a small cell to a bigger cell.

The sheer volume of British television shows that receive the U.S. reboot treatment continues to baffle me, mainly because the majority are often massive flops. Much like the recent Guardians Of The Galaxy Chinese subtitle issue, wherein the nuanced comedy was lost in translation, a similar fate often befalls British shows headed across the pond. Still, we can hold out hope that ABC Studios and Amblin TV won’t make a complete balls-up of No Angels.
The dramedy is being spearheaded by producer Julie Anne Robinson (Suburgatory), who is no stranger to the naughty antics of those Northern nurses. Robinson directed two episodes of the original series, which followed four nurses who work and live together. It began airing in 2004 and ran for two seasons, which wasn’t nearly enough in my opinion.
