Keanu Reeves has been set to receive the inaugural Lance Reddick Legacy Award at the 51st annual Saturn Awards ceremony, which has itself been dedicated to the memory of Reddick, a friend and former host of the show, who could be seen opposite the John Wick star in the entire franchise, passing away in March at the age of 60.
Presenting the award to Reeves at the ceremony, streaming live via ElectricNOW at 4 p.m. Pst on February 4, with Joel McHale as host, is Bosch star Titus Welliver.
Saturn producers Bradley and Kevin Marcus joined Robert Holguin, President of award show presenter The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror Films, in explaining that the new award in Reddick’s name “symbolizes and celebrates not only a performer’s talent, but their character; someone who’s a true goodwill ambassador in the industry.”

Director Chad Stahelski and star Keanu Reeves have once again proven there's an endless appetite for exquisitely crafted combat sequences, with "John Wick: Chapter 4" breaking franchise box office records. The latest installment in the massively popular action saga ramped things up considerably, delivering a high-octane 3-hour-long action cinema masterclass, cementing the "John Wick" movies' standing as bonafide blockbusters. That's impressive considering the first "John Wick" film was initially expected to be yet another flop for the then-struggling Reeves.
"John Wick: Chapter 4" looks set to continue the series trend of making a lot more money than its predecessor, which in Hollywood means one thing: more of the same is coming. In fact, that's been the case since 2017, when "John Wick: Chapter 2" made $171 million at the box office — more than double the first entry's take. Naturally, Lionsgate and Thunder Road Productions hastily cooked up some spin-off ideas in the...

Monaco, March 24 (Ians) The World Athletics Council has agreed to reinstate the Russian Federation (RusAF) following seven years of suspension due to egregious institutional doping violations but the ban on Russia and Belarus over the war in Ukraine continues.
Because of this, athletes, officials and supporting personnel from Russia and Belarus are still excluded from competition for the foreseeable future due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The decision was taken during the World Athletics Council meeting held in Monaco on Thursday.
The Council approved the Russia Taskforce’s recommendation that RusAF, which has been suspended for seven years due to doping, be reinstated after meeting all the requirements of the Reinstatement plan, which has been confirmed by an independent audit.
However, RusAF will be required to comply with a set of 35 ‘Special Conditions’ that are intended to ensure that RusAf’s anti-doping reforms remain in place and continue to operate effectively.

Netflix's highly anticipated Marilyn Monroe biopic, "Blonde," starring Ana de Armas will finally make its streaming debut on Sept. 30, and people are anxious to see how the film's leading lady brings a Hollywood icon's story to life. Leading up to the movie's worldwide release, "Blonde" has made headlines for de Armas's casting, a reportedly haunted set, and, most notably, its Nc-17 rating - a Netflix first that surprised many.
"You can't really control what they do and how they take things out of context."
Though de Armas previously said she was confused by "Blonde"'s adult rating - aka the kiss of death for some movies' success - she's now expressing concern over the possibility of her nude scenes circulating once viewers see the film. "I know what's going to go viral and it's disgusting," she told Variety in a September profile. "It's upsetting just to think about it.

‘Shadow in the Cloud’: Roseanne Liang Turned a Max Landis Script Into Her Own Feminist Monster Movie
Roseanne Liang is intentional about her ambitions: she wants to be a big-time action director, and what better way to prove her abilities than a rip-roaring genre movie that combines zippy action with plenty of winking humor? Enter the World War II-set “Shadow in the Cloud,” the Kiwi’s first action feature — she’s previously written and directed the winning rom-com “My Wedding and Other Secrets” and the lauded drama short “Do No Harm” — which functions as both a punchy midnight movie and a prime example of how an indie-sized budget can still deliver wild action.
Liang’s film makes it clear early on that it’s operating on its own wavelength, combining both a “war is hell” mentality alongside cheeky creature feature jokes. At the center of it all is Maude Garrett (Chloë Grace Moretz), a British flight officer zipping her way toward a jittery B-17.

Who were TV's biggest "villains" this year? Christine Quinn has an answer. The Selling Sunset star gave her take during an interview with The Guardian published Thursday, Dec. 31. 2020 has been a wild and unpredictable year for most of us, but it also brought with it a ton of key cultural incidents and shifts that kept online news and trade outlets pretty busy at their keyboards. As we finally grind toward the end of a very weird 12 months, we’ve been looking back at some of the more stand-out moments in geek culture, which we’ll recap with you here.
You may find that these cultural markers aren’t listed in chronological order. That’s because in 2020, time ceased to exist in its previously understood form. Wednesday rarely meant anything, Monday was still technically the worst but couldn’t be trusted either way, Saturdays were no longer reserved for the notion of relaxation, and any given Tuesday might as well have taken place in a different universe, such was the obliqueness of its concept.

“I think I’m… quite ready for another adventure!” -Bilbo Baggins
Ian Holm, esteemed knighted British actor and standout of The Lord of the Rings Trilogy and Alien, is dead at the age of 88, having succumbed to complications from Parkinson’s disease. Holm passed away in a London hospital peacefully near his family and caregiver, as his agent confirmed to The Guardian, referring to the late actor as “charming, kind and ferociously talented,” and that “we will miss him hugely.”
Holm stood as a peer amongst other knighted legends like Ian McKellen and Laurence Olivier, but he never saw himself as a marquee-dominating movie star type, having maintained the grounded approach of a working actor. It’s a conceit evidenced by the way in which he selected roles across his 60-year career on stage and screen, rarely revisiting thematically similar characters, lest he become typecast. However, it’s also the...

The Guardian has a really fun Spike Lee interview in which he answers questions from famous actors and directors. Spike always brings joy and we couldn't be more pleased about the career resurgence. People, I personally saw Girl 6 and Bamboozled and Chi-Raq in movie theaters. They all flopped but my ticket $ was in there! So naturally it's been thrilling to watch this recent return to prominence / audience goodwill. Though I admit I was surprised when raves started pouring in for Da 5 Bloods since his last (and only other) war picture (Miracle at St Anna) did not go over well at all.
More links after the jump including a tragic Cronenberg loss, a Bollywood suicide, Dick Tracy budget overrages, Little Women in Japan, and more...

Actress Kathryn Hahn has had a fascinating career. “I think I was the best friend first, then the randy crazy lady,” she told the Guardian in 2015. And perhaps in another alternate universe, Hahn is still the go-to girl gal pal bestie in romantic comedies or the outrageous supporting character, in breakthrough comedy roles in Adam McKay films like “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy,” “Step Brothers,” or David Wain’s “Wanderlust.

Two days after a Minneapolis cop killed George Floyd in late May, the novel coronavirus tallied its 100,000th American victim. More than 22,000 of those lost were black, though we only make up 13 percent of the overall U.S. population. As the global pandemic was laying bare virtually all of America’s structural inequalities, unrest on the Minneapolis streets swelled into the largest and most numerous public demonstrations for civil rights seen in generations. Tens of thousands of nonviolent protesters from various cultural backgrounds, in city after city, are crying out “black lives matter,...

Most moviegoers pinpoint Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight” as the film that changed the superhero genre, but it was Nolan’s “Batman Begins” that laid the groundwork three years earlier for the genre’s move toward “dark and gritty” realism. Released on June 15, 2005, “Batman Begins” jumpstarted Nolan’s superhero trilogy by adding layers of psychological character drama onto a genre that had been largely defined at that point by the eye-popping spectacle of the “X-Men” and “Spider-Man” movies. “Batman Begins” was Nolan’s first major Hollywood tentpole and to pull it off he looked to two of his favorite films of all time for inspiration: Richard Donner’s “Superman” and Ridley Scott’s “Blade Runner.”
“I wanted to try to do it in a more realistic fashion than anyone had ever tried to a superhero film before,” Nolan told The Guardian in 2005 on the eve of “Batman Begins'” theatrical release.

"We need a real plan!" Gravitas Ventures has debuted a trailer for a road trip indie comedy adventure titled Ana, about a young woman trying to find her real father on the island of Puerto Rico. The film stars Dafne Keen (the badass girl from Logan) as Ana, who meets a man named Rafa in a chance encounter. Together they embark on a road trip to try and save him from bankruptcy, or worse, encountering mystery and danger along the way. Also starring Andy Garcia as Rafa, with Luna Lauren Velez, Ramón Franco, Julitza Berberena, and Blas Sien Diaz. This looks like an intriguing little film, but they're tossing it out rather quietly at the start of January which is really not a good sign. Perhaps it's still worth a watch? Check it out. U.S. Latinx Streaming Platform Pantaya Reels in More Subs, Ramps Up Original Programming (Exclusive)
The growing influx of streaming giants in the U.S. market is a boon for premium Latinx-content streaming platform, Pantaya. That’s how Paul Presburger, CEO of both Pantaya and Pantelion Films, views it. “I see them more as potential partners, whether it’s in distribution like Apple TV and Amazon Prime Video, or as production and programming partners,” he said, citing deals with Amazon Prime Video and co-production talks underway with other platforms.
The two-year old Lionsgate-Hemisphere Media joint venture has just surpassed the 500,000 subs benchmark, exceeding its growth forecasts. Being the only streaming platform providing premium Latinx programming in the U.S. and Puerto Rico with “higher budgets, better production values and bigger stars” has been key to attracting a spectrum of Latinx subs, ranging from the Spanish-dominant and bi-lingual demos to English-dominant viewers, Presburger asserted.

Viacom International Studios (Vis) comedy series “Ana” has found its U.S. berth at premium Spanish-language streaming service, Pantaya, the fledgling Ott joint venture between Lionsgate and Hemisphere Media Group.
The 10-episode series starring Ana de la Reguera will debut exclusively in the U.S. and Puerto Rico by early next year. De La Reguera also created, wrote and produced the semi-autobiographical series which revolves around her fictionalized character as a Latina actress in Hollywood who bears the burden of her ex beauty queen mother’s unfulfilled dreams.
Location shooting in Vera Cruz and other parts of Mexico as well as Los Angeles wrapped in August.
“This acquisition completes the first cycle of content distribution for Vis in the Americas,” said Guillermo Borensztein, VP of content sales and co-productions at Vis. “Following our deals with Amazon and Comedy Central Latin America for the series, we are happy to reach the U.

An increasingly hostile trade war with China has Hollywood film financiers and distributors just as nervous as producers and star talent these days.
As the Trump administration continues with threats and prohibitions, the theatrical film business specifically is wringing its hands over the possibility of being shut out of the massive Chinese marketplace — to the detriment of both America and the middle kingdom, top executives said.
“It’s impossible to think about doing things without China,” said Mark Gill, a prolific indie producer behind films like “Shakespeare in Love” and “The English Patient,” who serves as president and CEO of Solstice Studios.
Gill spoke at a panel at Produced By 2019, held on the Warner Bros. lot this weekend, just as reports hit that China has warned American tech giants of “dire consequences” should they obey Trump’s new proposed ban of selling the country technology. A similar and unofficial Chinese blacklisting of U.

CBS has renewed Rachael Ray for a 14th season, sources at Natpe have confirmed to Deadline.

Rachael Ray is distributed and produced by CBS Television Distribution in association with Harpo Productions, Scripps Networks and Watch Entertainment. Janet Annino is the Executive Producer.

Comic book movie fans don’t agree on a lot of things, but just about all of us are on the same page with Logan. Hugh Jackman’s final movie as Wolverine was an emotional, exciting send-off for the much loved character and probably one of the best superhero films of all-time. A major part of its success has to be Dafne Keen’s turn as Laura Kinney. If her key character had fallen flat, the whole movie would have failed. Thankfully, Keen was a revelation in the role and is sure to have a big career ahead of her.
As it turns out, the actress’ talent was clear right from her first audition opposite her on-screen father. In the newly released featurette embedded up above, we see how Keen blew away both her co-stars and the production team with her intense audition, some of which she improvised on the spot.
