You know what I miss? Disney's inspirational true story dramas and sports movies. As easy and often valid as it is to poke holes in their predictable narrative structures and complain about them reducing even the most unbelievable real-life events to a cookie-cutter formula, we could do with some earnest, uplifting pictures about marginalized people defying the odds to realize their dreams right about now. We got some pretty good -- not to mention culturally sensitive -- ones in the '10s, too, including "McFarland, USA" and "Queen of Katwe." Sadly, however, modest to disappointing box office returns have since led to those types of offerings being relegated to streaming only (see also: the underappreciated Willem Dafoe adventure film "Togo").
That was also the original plan for "Young Woman and the Sea," a biographical swimming drama anchored (no pun intended) by none other than Rey Skywalker herself, Daisy Ridley. Luckily,...

Laapataa Ladies Box Office Day 8 Updates! (Photo Credit – IMDb)
Seeing a controlled release in theatres, Laapataa Ladies had a limited run at the box office during its first week in theatres. The film had brought in 4.12 crores in its opening weekend and then the weekdays brought in a little over 2 crores more, with 50 lakhs coming on a consistent basis. This sort of stability allowed at least some shows to be reserved for the film in the second week as well, and though there is Shaitaan bringing in very good numbers and Article 370 still running well, one waits to see how Laapataa Ladies make a mark commercially.
Incidentally, each of these three films is a Jio Studios production and has arrived on back-to-back weeks. Yesterday, on Women’s Day, the film’s tickets were priced at just Rs. 99/-. Also, there was the partial holiday of Mahashivratri. As a result some...

Fighter Box Office Advance Booking Day 1 (2 Days To Go) Updates! (Picture Credit: IMDb)
Deepika Padukone is marking her return to the big screens with another Republic Day release. We all remember the dhamaka Pathaan co-starring Shah Rukh Khan created at the box office last year. But things don’t look as well for Fighter co-starring Hrithik Roshan. Scroll below for advance booking updates for day 1 and a detailed comparison, also including Tiger 3.
Fighter is directed by Siddharth Anand, who was also the mastermind behind Pathaan. In fact, the film marks his second collaboration with Hrithik Roshan after War. Considering there are big names involved, the hype should have been at par by now. But the pre-booking sales have been underwhelming so far.

The need of the hour was for Fighter to at least add 2 crores gross to its kitty each day with the release around the corner.

HanuMan Crosses 100 Crores In India (Photo Credit –Instagram)
HanuMan is simply unstoppable at the Indian box office! Yes, the film was allotted more screens for the second-week run, and so far, it is enjoying the full benefit of it. After going below the 10 crore mark on the final day of week 1, the superhero flick picked up again and pulled off an impressive number on its day 9, i.e., the second Saturday. Keep reading to know more!

Dunki Advance Booking Updates! (Picture Credit: Facebook)
Dunki, led by Shah Rukh Khan, is pacing up as it nears the big release. Directed by Rajkumari Hirani, the film also stars Vicky Kaushal, Taapsee Pannu, and Boman Irani. With only two days to go, the comedy-drama has witnessed a big jump in its advance bookings at the box office. Scroll below for all the details!
Till yesterday, the Srk starrer had added pre-booking sales of 4.50 crores gross to its kitty. Many might think this is very low compared to the earnings of his 2023 blockbusters, Pathaan and Jawan, during the same duration. But considering the varied genres of the film, a comparison would not be fair as action films tend to attract more footfall.
Dunki Advance Booking Update!
Dunki is slated for release on December 21, 2023. It will be indulged in a massive box office battle with Prabhas’ Salaar, which will be released the following day.

Earlier this year, I vented my frustrations about how The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City was no longer Bravo's diamond in the rough.
With the legal woes of Jen Shah taking up all of the screentime, the series had become a shell of its former self.
In one of the biggest surprises in reality TV history, the series managed to recalibrate following Shah's departure.
Jen thrived off being the center of attention, and her presence had a halo effect through every storyline in the first three seasons, leading many to believe the show would sink further into oblivion.
12 episodes into The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City Season 4, I can confidently say it's the strongest season yet -- and one of the best seasons of Real Housewives. Ever.

Ike Turner Jr., the 64-year-old son of Tina Turner and Ike Turner, was arrested on charges of crack cocaine possession, as well as tampering with evidence.
Turner Jr. was arrested on May 6 by police in Alvin, Texas, People reports. He was sentenced to jail just 18 days before his mother’s death, at her home in Küsnacht, Switzerland, at the age of 83.
According to police, Turner Jr. was pulled over at 12:09 a.m. for an equipment failure — typically a term used for when a headline or taillight is out — while driving a white 2013 Ford Fusion.
During their investigation, police seized 1.7 grams of crack cocaine and less than a gram of methamphetamine, after Turner Jr. allegedly attempted to consume the narcotics to prevent them from being found.
According to officials with the Alvin Police Department, Turner Jr. allegedly “tried to eat the drugs before the officers could seize them from him.

Flo Rida agreed to an extensive child-support package for his son during a Family Court hearing in New York City last week. It involves a combination of monthly and annual payments that add up to nearly half a million dollars per year.
The rapper was told to pay $14,000 a month in support and $2,212 a month in health insurance for Zohar Dillard, his six-year-old son who has autism and a neurological disorder called hydrocephalus. He was also made to create a $300,000 escrow account for Zohar’s needs that would need to be restored annually. In addition, he was ordered to send a one-time $188,000 payment to his ex-girlfriend Alexis Adams to repay her for expenses, including Zohar’s school costs.

Paul McCartney believed in The Beatles surviving a rough 1969, but things obviously didn’t work out. The band broke up in 1970. He eventually felt optimistic following The Beatles’ split, but one of his Abbey Road songs seems to be miles away from that. He once said he didn’t write “You Never Give Me Your Money” about his Beatles bandmates, but it’s almost impossible to believe Paul was telling the truth.

The Beatles fought about money as much as they argued about artistic differences toward the end of their run. The turmoil of the late 1960s and 1970 was the culmination of years of stress. John Lennon saw The Beatles’ end coming when manager Brian Epstein died in 1967.

Having already amassed over 60 million subscribers, Disney Plus now has a strong foothold in the streaming wars, although it continues to lag some way behind market leaders Netflix and Amazon Prime. Still, the Mouse House’s platform boasts an impressive content library that includes the majority of their animated back catalogue and live-action remakes plus titles from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Star Wars, Pixar and, of course, The Simpsons.
At the current price they’re charging, Disney Plus is definitely good value for your money, but there’s nonetheless been criticism that there isn’t much in the way of engaging original movies and TV shows. With the notable exception of The Mandalorian and Hamilton, there hasn’t really been anything that’s captured the zeitgeist or dominated the conversation, with movies such as The Lady and the Tramp remake, Togo and The One and Only Ivan flying completely under the radar,...

When Disney Plus launched last year, I would occasionally ask its executives about their Emmy plans. They never quite had an answer — because early on, awards weren’t a high priority as they focused instead on growing the business.
“I always found that when you’re working on creative storytelling, especially in filmed entertainment, if you have awards in your line of scope, then that’s never a good start,” Disney Plus content and marketing president Ricky Strauss tells me.
And in a way, downplaying kudos competitions made sense: While other new streamers, including Apple TV Plus, debuted with much more awards-friendly prestige fare, Disney Plus’ initial programs were genre shows like “The Mandalorian” and family-friendly films such as “Togo.” Not exactly awards bait.
Yet, this year, they were. To the surprise of almost everyone — including its own execs — Disney Plus managed to score 19 nominations, including 15 for breakout hit “The Mandalorian.

“Black Mirror” is the three-time reigning champion in Best TV Movie, an Emmy race ostensibly for one-off productions. The dystopian satire was expected to contend to extend its record, which it set when it won for the second time, but its victories were so controversial that the academy amended eligibility requirements. Movies (and episodes entering as movies) now must have a minimum 75-minute runtime to qualify for Best TV Movie. This disqualified all episodes from the fifth (and probably final) season of “Black Mirror,” which had already been produced when the academy announced the change.

Despite the rule seemingly being introduced only to force “Black Mirror” out of Best TV Movie, Netflix lobbied the academy for an exception, which they inexplicably granted. Rival networks complained and the academy caved again. They reversed the reversal, opting to play by their own new rules...

It appears to be Netflix’s world and we are all just living in it. With an all-time record 160 nominations this year, the basic belief that streamers have become a source of comfort and entertainment during the pandemic and the sheer volume of content on Netflix with an astounding 52 different shows landing at least one nomination clearly paid off for the Television Academy membership. It is clear that once voters visited the service they stayed for more. By contrast, runner-up (and perennial leader) HBO managed 107 noms for just 21 different shows garnering at least a single nod.
Volume pays off, and the way the nascent Oscar season seems to be shaping up, that philosophy could well finally also prevail with the Motion Picture Academy as Netflix , at this point, has by far the largest number of potential nominated movies.

The platform may have raced past 50 million subscribers in virtually no time at all, but Disney Plus still frequently finds itself facing criticism for a relative lack of original content. The Mandalorian and more recently, Hamilton may have generated plenty of buzz online, but so far the streaming service has largely been sold on the strength of the Mouse House’s back catalogue.
Of course, there are a lot of high-profile projects in the works including the roster of Marvel Cinematic Universe shows, the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, reboots for Home Alone, Inspector Gadget, The Mighty Ducks and many more, but there hasn’t exactly been a lot of original feature-length movies to keep viewers occupied lately.

In its first-ever chance to be part of Deadline’s Contenders Television event, Disney+ chose its original movie Togo to highlight in its panel session, with director-cinematographer Ericson Cole, writer Tom Flynn and star Willem Dafoe joining a virtual panel to discuss the imposing logistics of mounting this true-life family adventure about an extraordinary sled dog and his master as he leads a team in a harrowing journey to deliver much-needed serum in 1925 in Nome, Alaska.
In this case, Dafoe explained it was important to use real dog actors, not CGI versions, since most of the film was done with practical action in actual challenging locations. “The animals are there because we want them to be animals. You have to be patient and we were pretty loose with it,“ said Dafoe. “The sled dogs are very athletic, very trained. I had to really learn from them.”

“Robin Hood” is getting the live-action, hybrid treatment at Disney+, which is developing a remake of the 1976 animated classic with “Blindspotting” director Carlos López Estrada at the helm.
Variety reported that the studio will bring Kari Granlund, who wrote Disney+’s live-action “Lady and the Tramp” launch film, to write the screenplay. Justin Springer, who produced Disney’s “Dumbo” remake, will produce the “Robin Hood” remake. Like Disney’s “The Jungle Book” and “Dumbo” reboots, the upcoming “Robin Hood” film will mix CGI with live-action. The deals closed in early March. Additional details, such as casting or a potential release date, are undetermined.

“I was struck by the fact that the story was wrong,” exclaims writer Tom Flynn of his new Disney+ film “Togo.” The thrilling movie details the true story of the 1925 Great Race of Mercy in Alaska, and the heroic dog Togo who led the journey. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
Many people incorrectly believe that the sled dog who saved the day was Balto. After all, that husky has plenty of accolades, statues, and an animated feature of his own. “Balto is not to be diminished” admits Flynn, but he only completed the final leg of the serum run. Musher Leonhard Seppala (portrayed in the film by Oscar nominee Willam Dafoe), and his dog team led by Togo, ran the majority of the trek through dangerous conditions. Flynn’s film sets out to tell the true tale of this brave canine.

Always one of the tougher categories to predict, the Emmys have at least three films this year that are “likely” to earn Television Movie nominations. Netflix’s “Breaking Bad” spin-off, “El Camino,” is pretty much a lock. HBO’s “Bad Education” with Hugh Jackman and Alison Janney, which debuted to positive notices at the 2019 Toronto Film Festival, also seems likely to earn a nod. In theory, Disney Plus’ “Togo” should also earn a nomination assuming the streaming service actually campaigns it.

Since its late 2019 launch, fledgling streaming service Disney+ has only released a handful of original films, from projects initially bound for theatrical releases (like the Willem Dafoe-starring dogsledding adventure “Togo”) to those expressly made for the service (like the live-action remake of “Lady and the Tramp”). When filmmaker Julia Hart and her husband and co-writer Jordan Horowitz signed on to make “Stargirl,” the streaming service was still almost two years away from its public debut.
It was something of a leap of faith for the “Fast Color” and “Miss Stevens” team. They had no idea what Disney+ was going to look like, but they knew it would be big (Disney big!) and that it offered them a chance to scale up their production in a way that independent filmmaking might not be able to provide.

There is a movie debuting this weekend that will fundamentally surprise you. That will make you question how you could so fundamentally prejudge a genre. No, it’s not the blockbuster fan-fiction mess of “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” or the unfathomable lack of, um, cinematic perspective in “Cats.” (Although, frankly, your potential disappointment in both could lead to genuine “surprise.”) No, in this case, it’s the supposed feel-good (aka “inspirational”) dogsled movie “Togo,” a Disney Studios movie premiering on Disney+.

A four-time Academy Award nominee, Willem Dafoe developed his cinematic charisma — seen in films like “The Florida Project” and “At Eternity’s Gate” — in his early career in theater. After studying drama at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Dafoe moved to New York in 1976 and joined what would eventually become The Wooster Group. His involvement in the experimental troupe led him to film and his first mention in Variety on Aug. 25, 1981, for his performance in “Breakdown” (now called “The Loveless”). Dafoe continued with the group for 27 years, building an impressive filmography along the way that includes “To Live and Die in L.A.” (1985); “Platoon” (1986), for which he earned his first Oscar nomination; and “Shadow of the Vampire” (2000).

Two high-profile new streaming platforms, Apple TV+ and Disney+, launched last month, just as awards season was starting to gear up. Following the Gotham Awards and AFI Awards earlier this week, which both feature TV categories, today the WGA Awards unveiled their TV nominees.
The list included the first major nomination for a program from the two newly launched streamers, Disney+’s upcoming original movie Togo, which is being released Dec. 20. Its writer, Tom Flynn, was nominated in the Original Longform category alongside writers for HBO’s Chernobyl and True Detective and AMC’s The Terror: Infamy.
This is the first creative awards nomination for a Disney+ program. The marketing campaign for the platform’s Star Wars world drama series, The Mandalorian, was recently nominated for the 57th Annual Icg Publicists Guild Awards.

Sneaking in ahead of next week’s dual announcements of the Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award nominations, the Writers Guild of America and Writers Guild of America, East announced their own batch of TV nominees, all competing to be deemed the best-written examples of the form.
Some perennial WGA favorites, including Netflix’s “The Crown,” Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale,” Amazon Prime’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” and HBO’s “Veep” all made return showings amidst the morning’s nominations, but there was still plenty of room for newcomers as well. It was a particularly strong showing for freshman comedies Hulu’s “PEN15” and Netflix’s “Russian Doll,” both of which earned nominations for Comedy Series and New Series.
