The revisiting of Dad's Army some forty years after its success on British telly to the uninitiated seems oddly timed and strangely unheralded. Why now? Indeed, it seems that the British public and perhaps some Irish too were still tuning in in decent numbers to the repeats that were shown on BBC2 of a weekend. Nostalgia is one thing perhaps and though never a fan, I could see it held a certain charm and appeal for its audience. But a movie is always a tricky proposition. Having already dabbled in movies with Columbia Pictures 1971 film version with the original cast, it seemed it was time for a re-boot. The best of British have been called to action here. Toby Jones plays Captain Mainwaring, Bill Nighy is Sergeant Wilson, Tom Courtenay is Lance Corporal Jones, while Michael Gambon is Private Godfrey. Together with Private Walker (Danny Mays) and Private Pike (Blake Harrison...

"This is it, men - our chance to play a real part in this war." Universal has debuted the second, full-length trailer for an upcoming comedy called Dad's Army, based on a classic 1960's BBC television series of the same name. The big, goofy WWII comedy is about a ragtag group of Home Guard local defense volunteers at Walmington-on-Sea who get into some mischievous trouble when word is there is a spy on the lose. The cast includes Bill Nighy, Toby Jones, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Tom Courtenay, Michael Gambon, Blake Harrison, Daniel Mays and Bill Paterson. This kind of humor won't exactly play well with everyone, but surprisingly it looks quite funny, so give it a chance why don'tcha. Maybe you'll find yourself laughing. Here's the two official UK trailers for Oliver Parker's Dad's Army, from Uni UK's YouTube (via Tmb): It is 1944 and World War II is reaching its climax.

Classic UK sitcom Dad's Army is headed to the big screen with a new feature film adaptation directed by Oliver Parker. Blessed with an amazing cast of UK talents - Catherine Zeta Jones, Bill Nighy, Michael Gambon, and Toby Jones are the most immediately recognizable but there are lots more in there - the new feature is very much in the spirit of the original series and the just released trailer promises great fun in a very stiff-upper-lip, let's impress this lady while catching Hitler sort of way.Take a look at the trailer below!...

Following on from an awkward teaser, a decidedly better full trailer has turned up for the film adaptation of the classic British sitcom "Dad's Army". Toby Jones, Bill Nighy, Michael Gambon, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Mark Gatiss, Tom Courtenay and Sarah Lancashire star in the film which opens February 5th in the United Kingdom.
The original show followed a fictional British town's platoon of veterans who've been tasked with defending against possible invasion of Blighty by the Nazis. In the film, Zeta-Jones plays a journalist doing a story on the group - but she may also be a German spy.

Catherine Zeta-Jones turns heads in a new trailer for the upcoming Dad's Army movie.
Based upon the classic comedy series, the clip sees the Home Guard introduced to glamorous reporter Rose Winters, played by Zeta-Jones.
Rose is in Walmington-on-Sea to write a piece on Mainwaring's troops, making an impression among the villagers with her designer style in an era of strict rationing.
Toby Jones' Captain Mainwaring also delivers a few one-liners as his team, which includes Bill Nighy, Michael Gambon and The Inbetweeners' Blake Harrison, try to discover a Nazi spy within their village.
Jones previously talked to Digital Spy about playing Mainwaring in Dad's Army, saying: "It was fun.
"It was really nerve-wracking. It was one of those jobs where you go, 'No, that's a terrible idea, I don't want anything to do with that, thank you very much'.
He added: "They sent [Hamish McColl's] script - it was really good.

It's Back To The Future Day, so what could be more apt than some favourites from the past reappearing in our lives (and timelines) to bring a little nostalgia to a soggy Wednesday? Swapping Corporal Jones' van for the DeLorean, here's the lads from Dad's Army in character poster form to provide us with exactly that.Following on from yesterday's ensemble one-sheet and teasing tomorrow's full trailer, these four posters gather the seven men of Wilmington-On-Sea's Home Guard platoon together. Finely-tuned instruments of war to a man, this is one more crack commando unit that cannot be held by a maximum security stockade. A smoky pub, however...First up are the leaders of the squad, Captain Mainwaring (Toby Jones) and Sergeant Wilson (Bill Nighy), colleagues at the local bank and a tension-filled double-act at the barracks.Next comes Private Walker (Danny Mays), a black marketeer and ladies man with a pencil 'tache so sharp,...

A new photo from the set of the upcoming Dad's Army film has been released, and it may ring a few bells.
Posing for the snap just like their sitcom forebears, the new cast do their very best versions of Walmington-on-Sea's finest.
Here below are the original team, on the BBC set - not as flashy, perhaps, but still the best.
Playing the pompous Captain Mainwaring, Toby Jones previously spoke to Digital Spy about his worries taking on the project.

However, Jones added: "They sent [Hamish McColl's] script - it was really good. I thought it balanced honouring the old by putting them in a new situation.

There is a certain strand of British comedy that is quite broad and buffoonish and that may weigh on how well the first trailer for "Dad's Army" plays for you. It's based on a Brit comedy of the same name that ran from the late '60s to late '70s, and the first trailer has arrived for the big screen version that, well, maybe your Dad might dig. Bill Nighy, Catherine Zeta Jones, Toby Jones, Daniel Mays, Michael Gambon, Bill Paterson and Tom Courtenay star in the Oliver Parker ("Johnny English Reborn") directed comedy flick set on the tail end of WWII that follows a contingent of the Home Guard who have to track down a spy. Here's the official synopsis: It is 1944 and World War II is reaching its climax. The Allies are poised to invade France and finally defeat the German army. But in Walmington-on-Sea morale amongst the Home Guard is low.

Johnny English Reborn filmmaker Oliver Parker's latest comedy is a reboot of the beloved BBC series from the 1960s and '70s.
Dad's Army is set in the waning days of World War II in the small village of Walmington-on-Sea, where Captain George Mainwaring (Jones) is leading a group of volunteers in the Home Guard.

It's been a while since Mr Hitler crossed swords with Walmington-on-Sea's finest - the last episode of Dad's Army aired in 1977 - but the khaki-clad boys are back in action and desperate to prove they're more than remainder stock while the British Army is out giving the Nazis the old what-for. The movie features about half the cream of British acting. The top half, in the case of this first teaser poster.Left to right in this identity parade of misfits, triers and high-street heroes are the slightly shifty Cockney Private Walker (Danny Mays), the vague Private Godfrey (Michael Gambon), daydreamy Private Pike (Blake Harrison), blustery Captain Mainwaring (Toby Jones), the wry Sergeant Wilson (Bill Nighy), willing but limited Lance-Corporal Jones (Tom Courtenay) and Scots undertaker Private Frazer (Bill Paterson). The might of the Wehrmacht haven't a hope, especially once Godrey can remember where he left his rifle.Directed by...

Toby Jones may be a BAFTA-nominated and critically-acclaimed actor, but even he found starring in the movie remake of Dad's Army "really nerve-wracking".
The Hunger Games star plays Captain Mainwaring in the big-screen adaptation of the classic sitcom alongside Bill Nighy and Michael Gambon.
Speaking at a press event for his forthcoming Fox mystery mini-series Wayward Pines, Jones told Digital Spy and others that the film is a good mix of the old and new.
"It was fun," he explained. "It was really nerve-wracking. It was one of those jobs where you go, 'No, that's a terrible idea, I don't want anything to do with that, thank you very much'."
However, Jones added: "They sent [Hamish McColl's] script - it was really good. I thought it balanced honouring the old by putting them in a new situation.
"And when I saw who else was cast in it, I thought, 'That's exactly the...

Mark Gatiss has signed up to play Labour politician Peter Mandelson in new Channel 4 political drama Coalition.
The Sherlock and League of Gentlemen actor will be joined by Babylon's Bertie Carvel as Nick Clegg, The Bletchley Circle's Mark Dexter as David Cameron and Ian Grieve (The Confessions of Gordon Brown) as Gordon Brown.
Coalition follows the moments which led to Clegg rising from outsider in the 2010 general election to the man who would decide the political fate of the country.
As a politician who was living in the shadow of Cameron and Brown, Clegg found himself in the powerful position of having to choose whether to ally his party with Labour or the Conservatives following the public's election votes.
Coalition is written by James Graham, who previously worked on Privacy, This House and Tory Boyz.
BAFTA-winning director Alex Holmes, who helmed Dunkirk and House of Saddam, will direct the 90-minute single drama.
