In the HBO series "House of the Dragon, actor Matt Smith plays Prince Daemon Targaryen, a character who will -- should "Dragon" last long enough -- no doubt commit multiple acts of murder, perhaps a few acts of torture, certainly several acts of incest, and, just for good measure, two separate acts of enthused cannibalism. Probably also tax evasion. This postulation is based merely on how lascivious and gnarly the show's predecessor, "Game of Thrones," was throughout its 2011 through 2019 run.
Smith's screen acting career began in 2006 with his appearance on a TV adaptation of Philip Pullman's novel "Ruby in the Smoke" and its sequel "Shadow in the North." He was a regular character on the BBC Two series "Party Animals" before landing the plum gig of The Doctor in "Doctor Who" in 2010. The Doctor, for neophytes, is a near-immortal space alien who can, upon his death, choose to regenerate into a new body.

The Crown‘s Claire Foy and Matt Smith will reprise their acclaimed London stage roles for a New York production of director Matthew Warchus’ staging of Duncan Macmillan’s play Lungs.
Following its sold-out run at London’s Old Vic, Lungs will be presented at Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Harvey Theater for a limited run from March 25 – April 19, 2020, producers announced.
The production marks the three Old Vic staging set for a New York run this season, following the current Broadway production of A Christmas Carol and the upcoming Girl from the North Country.
The synopsis for Lungs, about a young couple wrestling with one of life’s biggest dilemmas, is as follows: “The ice caps are melting, there’s overpopulation, political unrest; everything’s going to hell in a handbasket – why on earth would someone bring a baby into this world?”

Some months in advance of Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” a film about the Manson murders, comes Mary Harron’s “Charlie Says,” a very strained attempt to understand the motivations of the women who killed for Charles Manson.
“Charlie Says” is based on a book by Karlene Faith, a teacher who started working with three of Manson’s “girls” three years after they were put in prison for murder. The title comes from the constant refrain of these brainwashed young women, who still believe outlandish things that Manson told them about becoming winged elves after a race war.
The sound design is atmospheric and subjective in the first scenes, where we see Leslie Van Houten showering after the stabbing of Leno and Rosemary Labianca, but this subjectivity is abandoned once the film takes us to the Spahn Ranch where Manson holds sway.

The major thing that “Mapplethorpe” has in its favor is that the film is afraid of neither the life nor the work of the notorious photographer Robert Mapplethorpe.
Documentary director Ondi Timoner (“We Live in Public”), making her narrative debut, has ensured that this movie acknowledges the many hard edges and unattractive qualities of this man while also celebrating and not looking away from his most explicit and scariest photographs, many of which rather surprisingly appear on screen.
Most mainstream films are afraid of showing the male penis, or anything having to do with sadomasochism, but Timoner’s attitude here seems to be, “Bring it on!” Timoner’s gutsiness is shared (and then some) by her star Matt Smith, a British actor who very convincingly played another gay male icon, writer Christopher Isherwood, in a TV movie of Isherwood’s memoir “Christopher and His Kind” in 2011.

Read the previous part in this series: the film careers of Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant, here.
By 2009, the new version of Doctor Who had become not only an integral part of Saturday night television and a huge Christmas ratings winner but also an international success all over again. David Tennant, who had played the Time Lord since 2005 and was, arguably, more popular than any Doctor since the mighty Tom Baker hung up his scarf in 1981, had announced his resignation from the part he loved in October 2008. Many wondered how the incoming showrunner, Steven Moffat, would follow Tennant and what kind of show would emerge.

Alan Taylor has been making some very impressive moves casting his upcoming franchise-rebooter, Terminator: Genesis, bringing in Emilia Clarke and Jason Clarke to star as Sarah and John Connor to lead the new line-up.
Now Paramount and producing partner Skydance have announced that Matt Smith, beloved for his role as the Eleventh Doctor in the BBC’s acclaimed Dr. Who, has joined the cast of the upcoming reboot. The specifics of his role is being kept under wraps for now, but he’s being described as a new character with a strong connection to John Connor.
Deadline have also heard that the casting decision marks the final major piece for Terminator: Genesis, and that it’s a major role that will continue to grow in the second and third films.
Arnold Schwarzenegger is of course back as the eponymous machine, alongside Jai Courtney, J.K. Simmons, Dayo Okeniyi, and Lee Byung-hun.

We already know that Skydance Productions has begun filming on the new Terminator reboot from Alan Taylor and while we've had some casting announced, we knew it wasn't done yet. Today, they've revealed that former Doctor Who Matt Smith has joined the cast in an undisclosed, but important role!
As I said, we still don't know who he'll be playing, but it's supposed to be someone close to John Connor that could potentially have an affect on the future of the franchise as well. Matt Smith fans have been anxious to see what the actor would do next after his turn as the Doctor wrapped up, and now I guess he's moving on to another major Sci-Fi series. From the Press release:

Matt Smith had huge shoes to fill when he took over for the beloved David Tennant on Doctor Who, but he managed to carve out his own niche, with a combination of gangliness, excitability, and bow-tied adorability.
He’s branched out from Who, playing gay writer Christopher Isherwood in Christopher And His Kind, and he’s currently preparing to star as Patrick Bateman in the London production of the musical American Psycho.
Today is his 31st birthday, so enjoy this gallery. And we can’t wait to see what the future holds for him.

Dane DeHaan is in the running to star in Unbroken.
The WW2 drama, which is to be directed by Angelina Jolie, follows the true story of former Olympian Louis Zamperini, who endured a series of medical experiments, routine beatings and slave labour during his time at a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp.
Deadline reports that DeHaan is among the frontrunners for the role of Zamperini, along with Jack O'Connell (300: Rise of an Empire) and Alexander Dreymon (best known from BBC film Christopher and His Kind).
The Coen brothers rewrote the script for Unbroken earlier this year, which is based on the novel Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption by Laura Hillenbrand (Seabiscuit).
DeHaan will next be seen alongside Daniel Radcliffe in Beat poet drama Kill Your Darlings, and also plays Harry Osborn in the upcoming Amazing Spider-Man 2.

The BBC has played down reports that Matt Smith will leave Doctor Who at the end of 2013.
The actor - who began his tenure as the Eleventh Doctor in 2010 - is said to be interested in further developing his film career, according to The Sun.
However, the BBC said in a statement: "Sorry folks, but even we don't know what's going to happen at Christmas. It's not been written yet!
"But Matt loves the show and is to start filming the unmissable 50th anniversary, and the new series starting on Easter Saturday."
Smith recently said that he is "very happy" on Doctor Who, and confirmed that he will shoot a 2013 Christmas episode following the 50th anniversary 3D special.
"It's one of those jobs that you have to take year by year, it's ten months a year, it's all-consuming," he told talkshow host Jonathan Ross. "So I don't think you can...

Brace yourselves. This list of the Top 100 Greatest Gay Movies is probably going to generate some howls of protest thanks to a rather major upset in the rankings. Frankly, one that surprised the hell out of us here at AfterElton.
But before we get to that, an introduction. A few weeks ago we asked AfterElton readers to submit up to ten of their favorite films by write-in vote. We conducted a similar poll several years ago, but a lot has happened culturally since then, and a number of worthy movies of gay interest have been released. We wanted to see how your list of favorites had changed.
We also wanted to expand our list to 100 from the top 50 we had done previously. We figured there were finally enough quality gay films to justify the expansion. And we wanted to break out gay documentaries onto their own list (You'll find the...

British actor Matt Smith is hardly the first person to be plucked from relative obscurity and handed a role guaranteed to make him famous around the world. But at least when Daniel Radcliffe was cast as Harry Potter he wasn’t following in the shoes of other actors who had already played the part, often to wild acclaim.
But that was exactly the situation Smith faced in 2009 when he was cast as the 11th incarnation of the Doctor on the iconic British show Doctor Who. Adding to the pressure faced by Smith was the fact that he had to follow in the footsteps of the immensely popular David Tennant, who played the Doctor from 2005 to 2010, and who helped the franchise reach an unprecedented level of success, not just in the UK, but around the world.

The Frameline Film Festival is not only the world’s oldest Lgbt festival, it’s also the largest—attendance this year reached 56,000, reports Jacob Combs from San Francisco. The Frameline35 festival, now in its 35th reincarnation, screened more than 230 features and shorts at four locations across San Francisco, centered, of course, at the Castro Theatre, the 1922 movie palace located in the heart of the most famous gay neighborhood in San Francisco (and, arguably, the world). The Castro audience is not one known for being demure or quiet. The crowd at Sunday’s screening of Christopher and His Kind, the BBC docudrama about Christopher Isherwood that closed the festival, was no exception: quick to laugh (loudly), gasp and even dance when the moment called for it. The 35th edition of the San Francisco International Lgbt Film Festival, or Frameline35, opens tonight with Rashaad Ernesto Green's Gun Hill Road (image above) and runs through June 26 — Gay Pride Day — closing with Geoffrey Sax's Christopher and His Kind.
Michael Hawley previews eight narrative features and six documentaries, and he's got a top recommendation for each category, beginning with Céline Sciamma's Tomboy: "It's the summer before 4th grade and Laure's family has moved to a new town. When a potential playmate mistakes her for a boy, athletic Laure plays along and becomes Mikael to all the neighborhood kids — a charade that's kept hidden from her parents until just before the start of school. This complex and intelligent tale about gender identity won a jury prize at this year's Berlin Film Festival and it's now one of my favorite films of the year." Both are being made to celebrate Charles Dickens's upcoming bicentenary in 2012.
The BBC TV version, written by Sarah Phelps and directed by Brian Kirk, will hit our screens first, it's due to start filming in July in London for transmission at Christmas 2011. Rising star Douglas Booth (represented by Curtis Brown) is to play Pip, the young man of great expectations who learns he will inherit a fortune from a mystery benefactor when he becomes twenty-one. Douglas starred as Boy George in Mad About They Boy, and was last on our screens as Heinz in Christopher and His Kind. He also spent last year filming Lol, alongside Miley Cyrus. The film will kick off the festival on June 16 at Regal Cinemas Stadium 14 at L.A. Live. It is written by Skip Hollandsworth and director Linklater and stars Jack Black, Shirley MacLaine, and Matthew McConaughey.
The film follows a beloved mortician (Black) from a small Texas town, even winning over the town's richest, meanest widow (MacLaine). Even after Bernie commits a horrible crime, people still will not utter a bad word against him.
"We're thrilled to be opening the Festival with the world premiere of this delicious black comedy - a treat from one of the most original and exciting voices in independent film, Richard Linklater," said Festival director Rebecca Yeldham. Hi everyone. Ok, I've only got two programmes this week as one of them, "Comic Relief", took up about 144 hours. It was agony. Ok, on to the programmes!
Christopher and His Kind
So, Matt Smith of "Doctor Who" fame got jiggy with a certain young man named Caspar on Saturday. Oh yes. It was - well, how shall I put it? Vigorous, shall we say. Turns out Matt Smith is quite the lover!
Oh kids, kids, kids! Before you go getting all outraged or hot under the collar, let me say right off the bat that I did not personally get down on the good foot and do the bad thing with Matt Smith on Saturday night -- no, t'was merely a character called Caspar, playing the lover of Christopher Isherwood in "Christopher and His Kind," in which Smith played the titular chappie! Still, it was a bit weird to...

Matt Smith has revealed that he enjoyed playing a gay man in his new drama Christopher And His Kind. The Doctor Who took on the role of author Christopher Isherwood in the BBC Two show, which airs tomorrow. "I thoroughly enjoyed [playing a gay man]," he told The Daily Telegraph. Matt Smith has claimed that the experiences of Christopher Isherwood echo those of The Doctor in Doctor Who. In his first appearance elsewhere since taking on the role of the time-traveller, Smith portrays the novelist in upcoming BBC Two drama Christopher And His Kind. "He left 1930s England and arrived in Berlin, a place that in comparison was an alien planet," the actor told the Radio Times. "There's this burgeoning doom of Nazism emerging. "It feels like there are vampires walking through the city. There are these brown shirts who are becoming more and more prominent and more and more vocal. They've started ransacking shops." Speaking about Isherwood's experiences in Berlin, Smith continued: "He went there because he wanted to get away from his mother and hang out with his friend [the poet] Wh Auden. But he also wanted (more)...

Current Dr Who Matt Smith stars in a one-off drama which chronicles the formative years of English-American writer Christopher Isherwood, whose works include Goodbye to Berlin, which comes to BBC Two at the end of March.
Matt Smith stars as Christopher Isherwood with Lindsay Duncan playing his mother, Kathleen.
Christopher Isherwood escapes repressive English society and his suffocating relationship with his mother, Kathleen, for the decadent – and politically unstable – world of Thirties Berlin.
The hedonistic Berlin cabaret scene is in full swing when a young and wide-eyed Christopher Isherwood arrives in the city, unable to speak a word of German. To Isherwood's reserved English sensibility, the city's thriving gay subculture is thrilling and intoxicating. But Christopher soon finds himself heartbroken after the failure of a hopeless love affair and so sets out on a process of self-discovery...
