“The Room” is a truly special film. Written, directed, and starring Tommy Wiseau, its famous for just how spectacularly awful it is. And in a world filled with plenty of bad movies, “The Room” rises above all the rest not just because of the horrible acting, writing, set design, and everything else, but also for the legendary behind-the-scenes antics of Wiseau. These near legendary stories are so strange that it’s hard to believe that any of them are actually true.

One hundred seventy features have been submitted for consideration in the Documentary Feature category for the 90th Academy Awards. That’s 25 more than 2016. Assuming they all book their qualifying runs in New York and Los Angeles, the members of the documentary branch have just a few more weeks to see as many films as possible and file their votes for the shortlist of 15 to be announced in December. They’re each supposed to watch an assigned list of about 20 films, plus as many more as they can.

A true story about following your dreams. The full trailer for James Franco’s The Disaster Artist has arrived. The Disaster Artist premiered to raucous laughter and standing ovations at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Check out the new The Disaster Artist trailer
With The Disaster Artist, James Franco transforms the tragicomic true-story of aspiring filmmaker and infamous Hollywood outsider Tommy Wiseau—an artist whose passion was as sincere as his methods were questionable—into a celebration of friendship, artistic expression, and dreams pursued against insurmountable odds. Based on Greg Sestero’s best-selling tell-all about the making of Tommy’s cult-classic disasterpiece The Room (“The Greatest Bad Movie Ever Made”), The Disaster Artist is a hilarious and welcome reminder that there is more than one way to become a legend—and no limit to what you can achieve when you have absolutely no idea what you’re doing. A true story of enduring love and survival against impossible odds, Breathe is chiefly noteworthy as the feature-directing debut of British screen star Andy Serkis (Lord of the Rings, Planet of the Apes), a kind of dry run for his Jungle Book reboot next year. But the main authorial force behind this personal passion project is producer Jonathan Cavendish, who co-founded the London-based motion-capture studio Imaginarium Productions with Serkis in 2011.
Cavendish conceived Breathe as a tribute to his parents, Robin and Diana, and the “swashbuckling band of eccentrics” that surrounded them during their long and extraordinary marriage. Despite being paralyzed...

Breathe, William Nicholson can boast one of the most anticipated films debuting at the Toronto Film Festival. But for the past year, the 69-year-old Brit and two-time Oscar nominee clandestinely wrote perhaps the most dangerous project to hit Hollywood in some time.
Just as the Andrew Garfield-Claire Foy starrer kicked off production in summer 2016, Nicholson began adapting Bill Browder's Red Notice: A True Story of High Finance, Murder, and One Man's Fight for Justice. Why Browder's story is so lethal stems from the 53-year-old American financier's quest to bring down...

A true story so pure that it almost grants its teller the permission to be sloppy, Gabriela Cowperthwaite’s “Megan Leavey” is a bit of a mess from the moment it starts, but it’s hard to completely dismiss any movie with a soul this strong, just as it would be hard to dismiss a disobedient puppy so long as its tail keeps wagging. An unlikely mutt that crossbreeds the cuteness of “Must Love Dogs” with the suspense of “The Hurt Locker,” “Megan Leavey” is the kind of movie that writes itself, and often feels as though it has.
Based on the very real, very believable bond between a young marine corporal and the volatile German Shepherd with whom she partners during her tours of duty in Iraq, this broadly engaging drama is gripping when it deals with the details of being a woman on the front lines, and it...

Jake Gyllenhaal is set to star in and produce a new World War II adventure film that is based on a true story. The film is called The Lost Airman and it's an adaptation of the book written by Seth Meyerowitz called The Lost Airman: A True Story of Escape From Nazi-Occupied France. Here's the description of the story:
Based on recently declassified materials, the book tells the incredible true story of Arthur Meyerowitz, an American turret-gunner whose B-24 bomber was shot down over Vichy France in 1943. While hiding in the French countryside, Meyerowitz befriended Marcel Talliander, the founder of the legendary French resistance group Morhange, who helped shelter the man from the Gestapo through his secret network. After six months of barely evading capture, Meyerowitz escaped through a carefully orchestrated plan that also involved R.F.W. Cleaver, one of the most accomplished British fighter pilots of the war.

A few months ago, my partners and I had a wild hypothesis. It was this: the success of a digital project is primarily dependent on the quality of the story.
Revolutionary, right? A real game-changer. Who wants to hire us as consultants?
Here’s the thing. Since my company (shameless plug, we are Happy Little Guillotine Studios – check us out!) started creating content in the digital space in 2006, the industry has been desperately chasing the, “How do we get views?!” high like a cokehead chases… well, coke, probably. Maybe deer, if they’re a hunting cokehead.
It’s a desperate, “We’ll sacrifice anything for views!” approach that can give digital networks tunnel vision when they greenlight programs. Instead of picking the best story, they pick the story with the best influencer package. Don’t get me wrong, this is a strategy that my company has also employed and continues...

Not many surprises this Super Bowl weekend as Universal's Split finished #1 for a third straight weekend in a row while the new releases struggled out of the gates. Between the new releases, Paramount's Rings did manage a second place finish despite largely negative reviews while Stx's The Space Between Us, floundered and finished well below expectations. Overall, the top twelve grossed an estimated $81.1 million, a bit below the $82 million the top twelve combined for over last Super Bowl weekend, though actuals could show a bump as studios could be playing it a bit conservative with Sunday estimates ahead of this evening's big game. With an estimated $14.6 million, M. Night Shyamalan's Split is the #1 movie for the third weekend in a row as the film's domestic cume climbs to $98.7 million. This is the first time Shyamalan has had a film top the weekend box office three weeks in a row...

Leonardo DiCaprio is in talks to produce and star in an upcoming feature film adaptation of Beth Macy's book, Truevine: Two Brothers, A Kidnapping, And A Mother’s Quest; A True Story Of The Jim Crow South. This is based on the true story of two albino African-American brothers who were kidnapped in 1899 in Virginia and were sold to the circus by James “Candy” Shelton and displayed as circus freaks. For 28 years their mother struggled to get them back. This is truly and intense and heartbreaking story. As you might imagine, the brothers endured horrific treatment and were told that their mother had died.

Some big things are happening in Leonardo DiCaprio‘s realm. First, Deadline tells us his company, Appian Way, has partnered with Paramount for Truevine, an adaptation of Beth Macy‘s non-fiction tome — subtitled Two Brothers, a Kidnapping, and a Mother’s Quest; A True Story of the Jim Crow South — concerning George and Willie Muse, two black brothers who were kidnapped in 1899 and put on display in traveling freak shows across the Jim Crow-dominated south.
It’s positioned as a starring role for DiCaprio, which, given the description, is a bit odd, but there may be a role in the form of (and this would sound so much funnier if the story weren’t so upsetting) “a white man [who] offered them a piece of candy.” A cousin-of-sorts to Django Unchained‘s Calvin (ahem) Candie, perhaps?
The other property Appian Way’s been eyeing is probably much easier to digest as entertainment,...

The last time we saw Leonardo DiCaprio in the Old South, he was viciously sneering as the villain in Quentin Tarantino‘s slavery revenge western “Django Unchained.” But the actor is curious to explore racial prejudice through a more dramatic lens, and is lining up a project telling a trouble true story on the eve of 1900.

Editor's Note: Nate Parker has been of two minds about the historical grounding of his film, The Birth Of A Nation, which tells a story based on the Nat Turner slave revolt of 1831. As recently as last Sunday, Parker reminded Anderson Cooper in a 60 Minutes interview that the movie is, in effect, a reality-based fiction. "There's never been a film that was 100% historically accurate," Parker said. "That's why they say 'based on a true story' and doesn't say, 'A true story…...

Brooklyn-based distributor Factory 25 has acquired North American rights to Hellaware, writer-director Michael M. Bilandic’s indie satire about a wannabe photographer caught in the lowbrow-highbrow collision between the NYC art gallery scene and the grimy rapcore world of Juggalo culture. Keith Poulson stars as Nate, whose coked-up YouTube search leads him to a music video by Insane Clown Posse knockoff the Young Torture Killers. The fictional band drew free publicity for the film when online viewers took a controversial music video from the movie for the real thing. Factory 25 will open the film in NYC on September 26 and digitally on September 23.

Editor’s Note: I met Sean Williams at Comic-Con’s Hall H between panels on the first day of the Con this past July, chatting as people do. It turns out that Sean is a filmmaker, and he’s working on a sci-fi project – travel to another planet! strong women! – that sounds really great.
Last week Sean let me know that he was ready to start “officially” talking about the project, and wanted to know what I’d like to know. I told him I wanted to know, basically, everything. How the project got started, who’s involved, where he is in the process, etc. What follows is the narrative he wrote up on the spot on his phone and sent to me via Facebook Messenger in response. One long narrative that was completely engaging. He even copied and inserted biographies as he went along. It’s no wonder the man has won writing awards.
