Last Thursday, a stone’s throw from the former headquarters of Larry Flynt’s Hustler empire, a trove of thirsty teenage influencers, A-listers such as Dustin Hoffman and rock stars including Muse’s Matt Bellamy were queueing up to walk the red carpet at a movie premiere.
This wasn’t, however, the latest Marvel launch or an Oscar-bait opening. It was the re-release of a 13-year-old music documentary about a previously relatively unknown heavy metal band from Canada.
Anvil!: The Story of Anvil, a tale of hope and heavy metal, has been having quite the encore.
The film, directed by Sacha Gervasi, has been re-released by Utopia for a new generation of kids that seem willing to get in the pit for its heartwarming message: never give up.

Brett Morgen’s Moonage Daydream swept up a cool 922,000 at the domestic box office this weekend, while an impressive array of top industry players took Saturday to mull the global future of arthouse film. The real test — of specialty’s core adult audience willingness to return to cinemas — starts this fall, according to execs at the Zurich Summit, an in-person event straddling the Zurich Film Festival.
A24 acquisitions and distribution specialist David Laub, and Sierra/Affinity executive Kristen Figeroid said it’s been hard to get a picture of what older audiences will do in a more normalized situation. Last fall, there were highly infectious new Covid variants in the news. This fall, there aren’t (or so it seems). Last fall, there were few new films. Now the flow of content is much steadier and there have been some standouts (Mrs. Harris Goes To Paris). Young people have returned to cinemas,...

The title of “Railway Children” in the UK is “The Railway Children Return,” since it’s both an homage and sequel to Lionel Jeffries’ 1970 film—and British national treasure—“The Railway Children” (itself an adaptation of an Edith Nesbit novel). But Morgan Matthews’ unrequested sequel would be far better described as a resurrection than a return, as it plods lifelessly through each and every well-mannered farce, Arcadian frolic, and flag-waving escapade of its beloved predecessor, stopping only to exchange the original’s slapdash commentary on xenophobia for an equally slapdash discourse on racial injustice.

The drought of tentpoles began in early August after the release of Bullet Train, and it will last until the mid-October release of Halloween Ends. Despite the lack of the main events, which has caused the overall box office to plunge below 60 million for four weekends straight and possibly three more to come, the season has had some solid counterprogramming, best exemplified by last weekend’s overperforming 19 million opening of The Woman King which should have strong legs given the film's exceptional word of mouth (including the rare A+ CinemaScore). This weekend, we get the release of Don’t Worry Darling, perhaps the season’s buzziest title, and it may be the biggest weekend gross for a film since Bullet Train’s 30 million debut seven weekend’s ago (the biggest since then is Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero’s 21.1 million opening five weekends ago).

Disney and 20th Century confirmed Tuesday that James Cameron’s award-winning movie Avatar — still the top-grossing film of all time — will return to theaters nationwide and overseas on Sept. 23 in remastered 4K High Dynamic Range.
The rerelease of Avatar comes three months before the highly anticipated sequel Avatar: The Way of Water hits the big screen around the globe, including on Dec. 16 in North America.
Avatar is the top-grossing film of all-time at the worldwide box office, collecting 2.84 billion in ticket sales.
Comscore box office analyst Paul Dergarabedian says playing the original film will help provide a marketing tailwind ahead of the sequel. “Disney sees a benefit in rereleasing the movie as a reminder to fans in North America, most of whom have not seen the all-time global box office champ since its special-edition release almost 12 years ago,” says Dergarabedian.

"I can't talk about it, but I'm on a secret mission." Blue Fox has debuted a new official US trailer for the film The Railway Children Return, which already opened in the UK back in July. It's now opening in the US in late September. It's a "sort of sequel" / remake of the 1970 British film The Railway Children, about three children who move with their mother to Yorkshire. Jenny Agutter returns to her role as Bobbie from the original and is joined by Sheridan Smith, Tom Courtenay, and John Bradley. This one also follows a group of children who are evacuated to a Yorkshire village during the Second World War (to keep them safe from bombings), where they encounter a young American soldier who, like them, is far away from home. The cast of children also includes Beau Gadsdon, Eden Hamilton, Zac Cudby, Kj Aikens, Austin Haynes. It's described as "enchanting,...

With Avatar and Spinal Tap films on the way, does the flurry of belated follow-ups typify Hollywood’s aversion to risk?
Next week, Hollywood will take an estimated 300m gamble on Top Gun: Maverick, the sequel to a film released 36 years ago. Right now, one of the hottest projects at the Cannes film festival market, where rights are sold to as-yet-unmade films – is the sequel to This Is Spinal Tap, a film released 38 years ago. This Christmas we’ll get the sequel to James Cameron’s blockbuster Avatar, which in contrast is practically sprinting to the gate a mere 13 years after its first appearance. In between, this summer will see the arrival of The Railway Children Return, a sequel to the beloved family classic, 52 years later.

Here’s a big truth, sometimes, particular hits are region-specific. That’s very true of “The Railway Children,” a big hit in the U.K. in the 1970s that didn’t make a considerable dent here in the U.S. (there was also a BBC 1968 television serial). It’s still largely unknown stateside, but that hasn’t stopped the filmmakers of “The Railway Children Return” from taking big inspiration from the original.
