If you haven't yet seen The Devil's Rock, a WWII-based horror film that marked the feature debut for New Zealand director and Weta Workshop special effects artist Paul Campion, you've missed a dark, gruesome and intense tale that feels like it's torn straight from the pages of the classic horror comics... although it's actually based in part on historic events, along with some chilling occult lore. Here's the trailer: I was introduced to Campion recently (by Bane of Yoto author Josh Viola), and I found out he's got tons more amazing horror projects in the pipe – most notably a feature adaptation of Brian Keene's acclaimed horror novel Dark Hollow. Naturally, I had to learn more about that, as well as Paul's amazing short films, and he graciously offered us the scoop. Fearnet: For those who haven't yet seen The Devil's Rock, can you explain the genesis of that project?...

New Zealand director Paul Campion won himself a lot of fans around the world a few years back with his absolutely fabulous short film Eel Girl, success he built into his debut feature The Devil's Rock. And now Campion is working towards his sophomore effort, an adaptation of Brian Keene's novel Dark Hollow. When local women in a rural Pennsylvanian town start disappearing, writer Adam Shay and his neighbours discover an unholy evil dwelling deep in the forest: a satyr - a supernatural half-man, half goat creature, hellbent on protecting itself and spreading it's seed. With creature work to be contributed by Weta - where Campion used to work as an effects artist - a first teaser has arrived online via Bloody Disgusting. Check it out below....

Director: Paul Campion. Review: Adam Wing. Paul Campion is best known for his visual effects work on The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Chronicles of Narnia. The Devil’s Rock is his feature length debut, but it’s probably worth baring in mind that the two shorts he made in preparation for this were called Eel Girl and Night of the Hell Hamsters, which make The Devil’s Rock sound like a dull proposition by comparison. It’s the eve of D-Day and allied commandos are carrying out sabotage raids on the German occupied Channel Islands to draw attention away from Normandy. On Forau Island, two New Zealand comrades, Captain Ben Grogan (Craig Hall) and Sergeant Joe Tane (Karlos Drinkwater) have been sent to destroy gun replacements, but after negotiating a tricky route to their target, a woman’s screams lure them into an isolated fortress. It’s...

You know that you are in for a treat when you read "from the director of Eel Girl." Paul Campion is the director behind the New Zealand shot The Devil's Rock and this is one horror film that grabs your attention. Many features have equated the Nationalist Socialist Worker's Part (Nazi) with the occult and the supernatural, including Blood Creek, starring Dominic Purcell. This time, the Gestapo come in devilish disguise and female form, while using pentagrams to summon even more minions.
Recently, The Devil's Rock has been picked up for North American distribution (Dread Central) and horror fans can watch the early events of World War II, including D-Day, with this first trailer for the film. Prepare to face one of the most villainous forces from the 19th Century, in demon form!

You know how Dustin, Steven, Dan and Bedhead spend their weekends at movie theaters, hoping that one of the week's big releases will actually yield something good? I'm like that, except for an aversion to public places and humans. So instead, I wander the internet and Netflix, trying to find a diamond in the rough, an unheard-of film that will end up being a pleasant surprise. As a result, I find myself watching a lot of the foreign horror releases, a lot of animated fare, and a bunch of other stuff that my wife rolls her eyes at. Anyway, here's a nifty round-up of some of the better-looking small films to be found. Enjoy.
First, we've got the Korean film Section 7, which is hoping to contend with The Host for best Korean monster movie. It's very reminiscent of the classic American B-flick, Deep Rising, but it might be worth a go.

According to horror cinema, Nazis are always trying to summon some sort of otherworldly entity to do their dirty work. Paul Campion’s upcoming genre flick “The Devil’s Rock” finds a group of dastardly German villains attempting to channel demonic forces into the body of an extremely attractive female. Only a group of New Zealand commandos can stop this evil plot from taking shape. Apparently Campion is also responsible for a film called “Eel Girl”, which a good friend of mine swears up and down is extremely entertaining. If “The Devil’s Rock” turns out to be the bee’s knees, perhaps I’ll give the other a shot, as well. Until then, have a look-see at the trailer lurking below. It’s probably not safe for work, but since when has that stopped from from goofing off? Yeah, I thought so. Set in the Channel Islands on the eve of D Day,...

There's something just not quite right about that girl.Director Paul Campion created quite a stir with his short film Eel Girl, a scifi tinged horror picture with a darker than dark sense of humor at its core. The whole thing was a riff on male desires and Campion is working that angle - though without the humor - once again with his first feature The Devil's Rock.Set in the Channel Islands on the eve of D-Day, two Kiwi Commandos sent to destroy German gun emplacements to distract Hitler's forces away from Normandy, discover a Nazi occult plot to unleash demonic forces to win the war.Campion enlisted the help of Weta star Richard Taylor for the practical effects on this one, and with the film...

Paul Campion impressed us with his film Eel Girl , now we finally have a look at The Devil's Rock , a New Zealand production that he committed to last summer. Set against the backdrop of World War II, the film follows two New Zealand commandos who uncover a Nazi plot to use demonic forces to win the war. Is it safe to say we can that "demonic" element is a woman? You betcha. Check out the trailer below.

Yesterday we heard from writer/director Eric England, who gave us a list of his five favorite independent horror features. Today we take a look at the up-and-coming indie director’s favorite genre shorts. Read on to see what short films have caught his eye over the years!
1. El Ciclo
This is one of my favorite shorts by a buddy of mine - and a very talented director - Victor Garcia. It's exactly what a good short film should be: tight, effective, and well executed.
2. Bedfellows
Who says scares have to take time? The first time I saw this short, I got goosebumps. I still love to pull it up and give my friends an unsuspecting scare. Not only that, but it's directed by Drew Daywalt, who has a knack for little horrors.
3. Eel Girl
This short gets me. Great effects. A naked girl. And a cool monster! It's sci-fi at its best!

Good news for fans of military themed horror. Not only is Eel Girl director Paul Campion currently in post production on his debut feature with the help of Richard Taylor and his crew at Weta on the effects end, but that picture - The Devil's Rock - has already landed distribution in the UK via Metrodome in what is being described simply as a six figure deal.
And why would Metrodome move this quickly on a debut feature that isn't even done yet? Simple. Because Campion's short film work is stellar, because Weta is similarly stellar, and because if the footage Nz Film are showing from The Devil's Rock is any indication, this film is also shaping up to be stellar.
Set in the Channel Islands during WWII the film follows a pair of New Zealand military officers sent in as saboteurs to destroy a German military bunker. What they...

Hell hath no fury like a hamster possessed! Or something like that. For those thinking, based on the title alone, that Paul Campion‘s short film Night of the Hell Hamsters is some sort of horror movie spoof, think again. This clever, scary and gross piece of work is the real deal, a true blood horror flick about tiny little creatures that inflect some major mayhem when they become possessed by a demon. It’s a true horror original. Watch the entire 15-minute film embedded above.
I’ve written about this film a couple of times over the years. What appeals to me the most is that there’s something very classic about the look and the plot, but it’s a totally original, modern idea. Plus, I’m starting to realize how much I appreciate smart, intelligent, well-written horror. Possessed hamsters is an innately goofy premise, but Campion — who...

Paul Campion has begun work on his first feature film. You may have seen his impressive short films Eel Girl and Night of the Hell Hamsters on the film festival circuit. He's presently in New Zealand tackling The Devil's Rock , based on a script he penned with Paul Finch and Brett Ihaka. Weta is on board to handle the FX work. Campion is utilizing Island Bay Studios where the production team has built a massive underground bunker set. Set against the backdrop of World War II, the film follows two New Zealand commandos who uncover a Nazi plot to use demonic forces to win the war. Okay, so on the surface the plot is nothing groundbreaking as some war/horror films have covered this territory before. But with Campion at the helm, we might get something refreshing. Craig...
