The weak first-weekend performance of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is concerningly indicative of larger issues with the Hollywood box office. Note that the latest flick, under the direction of George Miller, is a prequel to 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road. Sure, the stellar cast that it brought together made the movie one of the most anticipated of the year, especially in the film enthusiast community.
Thus, one can’t help but wonder: What magic could Charlize Theron have woven had she returned as the indomitable Furiosa in Miller’s ambitious saga? Sadly, her absence in the anticipated prequel, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, is obvious.

Will Smith and Martin Lawrence’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die has received clearance to roll into China. The Sony Pictures film will hit Chinese cinemas on June 22, according to both the studio and local press reports in Beijing. The film opens theatrically in North America on June 7.
The new film is the fourth installment in the long-running Bad Boys franchise, following Bad Boys for Life (2020), which revived the movie series after a 17-year hiatus and was a worldwide hit with $426 million in total ticket revenue. Bad Boys for Life earned just $3 million in China, but it was released there amid the challenges of the pandemic.
Bad Boys 4 is helmed by Bad Boys for Life directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, the Belgian duo who infamously had their $90 million Batgirl feature for Max shelved for a tax break by Warner Bros. Discovery in 2022.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga narrowly beat The Garfield Movie by less than $1 million over the Memorial Day box office weekend, making it clear the film isn’t quite the blockbuster Warner Bros. was hoping it would be. But what does this mean for the next Mad Max movie?
Unfortunately, the news isn’t good, at least for now. A report from THR states that Furiosa‘s disappointing $32 million domestic take is “diminishing hopes for Mad Max: The Wasteland.” Director George Miller had previously acknowledged that the possibility of more Mad Max movies was linked to how well Furiosa performed but added that he wasn’t even going to think about it until after the movie was released.
“There are certainly other stories there. Mainly because in order to tell the story of Fury Road, we had to know the backstory of Furiosa and Max in the year before,...

Nearly halfway through 2024 and it's crystal clear that we're staring down the barrel of a bad year at the box office that the industry can ill-afford. 2023 had just started to make it seem like there was some light at the end of the tunnel, with domestic ticket sales topping $9 billion. Unfortunately, the SAG and WGA strikes last year messed up the release calendar for 2024 and now, theaters are suffering once again. Now, Regal Cinemas and regional chain Harkins Theatres are rolling out a summer program that might help -- and it involves $1 movie tickets.
Regal is kicking off its Summer Movie Express at over 400 locations beginning June 11. Meanwhile, Harkins will roll out its Summer Movie Fun beginning June 3. In both cases, the chains are screening a selection of family-friendly movies aimed at kids from recent years, including "Trolls Band Together," "Sonic the Hedgehog," and "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem.

At the time of writing this, Sony has just announced the PlayStation State of Play for May 2024. With the summer showcase season, just around the corner, it will be interesting to see how Sony lays out their upcoming slate for the next few years.
Add to that the fact that this is Sony’s time to really shine and show everyone why PlayStation is king. With Xbox failing to deliver the goods as of late, and a lack of first party PS5 titles confirmed, now seems like the perfect time for the PlayStation State of Play to drop.
So below, each member of the FandomWire Gaming team has made a prediction for what they expect to see during the event respectively. I will list these below followed by a bit of commentary on how likely I believe each prediction is:

More than two months after it first hit theaters, "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire" has crossed a fairly significant box office milestone. The film has been an afterthought for several weeks (all due respect), as several big, new movies such as "Challengers," "The Fall Guy," "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes," and "Furiosa," among others, have entered the marketplace. Be that as it may, Sony's latest entry in the long-running franchise had just enough gas left in the tank to pass the $200 million mark globally.
For its 10th weekend in theaters, "Frozen Empire" pulled in $355,000 domestically, coming in at number 14 on the box office charts. The film had to shed 591 screens as "Furiosa" and "The Garfield Movie" opened to a hugely disappointing $26.3 million and $24 million, respectively. Naturally, that gobbled up the lion's share of the attention. But with that little bit of extra money, the new "Ghostbusters" has amassed $112.7 million...

Forty-five years after George Miller introduced audiences to Mad Max, the auteur may have finally hit the end of the road through the postapocalyptic wasteland unless he finds some high-octane gasoline soon.
The revered filmmaker’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga bowed to a disappointing $32 million domestically for the four-day Memorial Day weekend and $36.5 million overseas, diminishing hopes for Mad Max: The Wasteland, another Max installment Miller has been toying with for years.
Miller and Nico Lathouris wrote the scripts for both The Wasteland and Furiosa as part of the development process of Mad Max: Fury Road, the 2015 Warner Bros. film that became a surprise awards season juggernaut, winning six Oscars, and which became an instant action classic. The Wasteland would follow Max Rockatansky in the year before Fury Road, and is said to involve a young mother — and (naturally) include plenty of action.

While we are still some time away from a Metal Gear Solid Movie, it hasn’t dampened the spirits of fans who are still eager to see the popular franchise adapted to the big screen. With the recent release of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, there has been talk of Director George Miller wanting Hideo Kojima to take on the game for this title.
Kojima is an innovative thinker and the Metal Gear franchise is regarded by many as his crowning glory. First released in 1998 for the PlayStation 1, it saw huge acclaim and numerous awards. The action-adventure stealth perspective of the game drew a legion of fans who have followed the franchise through its various sequels.

While it made $65 million dollars worldwide in its global opening, it’s fair to say that the domestic opening for “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” at $32 million, was underwhelming and, worrisomely, might be the end of the ‘Mad Max’ franchise. Then again, “Mad Max: Fury Road” never opened up substantially higher, only earning $45 million in its early May debut in 2015.

May comes to a close with a quieter weekend full of odds and ends and nothing particularly wide in terms of studio releases. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
After a fairly disappointing Memorial Day weekend, the month ends with a number of moderately wide releases. Since most of these new films are smaller, few theater counts have been reported, making it tougher to determine how some of them might perform, though it’s likely that only one will be getting a wide enough release to potentially break into the Top 5. Otherwise, we’re looking at a repeat of the Top 4 with the slightest chance that “The Garfield Movie” might pass “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” with few of the new releases targeting family audiences.
The one movie that has the best chance at cracking the Top 5 would probably be Crunchyroll’s latest Anime feature “Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle,...

The Oceans duo are back on the big screen in the first Wolfs trailer – a buddy crime caper from Jon Watts.
2001 called, and they want their leading men back.
That’s right, it’s the Ocean’s Eleven reunion we’ve been waiting for. Brad Pitt and George Clooney are starring as rival ‘fixers’ in Jon Watts’ first feature post-Spider-Man: No Way Home, with a title apparently stolen from Harvey Keitel’s character in Pulp Fiction.
My head hurts. Here’s the Wolfs trailer.
True to the name’s Tarantino roots, Pitt and Clooney co-star as a pair of, er, specialist cleaner-folk, both hired to dispose of the same body at the same time. Cue hijinks, a few drugs and a gunfight or two – you know the drill.
The trailer drops at an auspicious time for the big-screen action-comedy genre. The Fall Guy – a more-or-less original crowd-pleaser originally seen as...

Last year, Jennifer Lopez starred in so-so Netflix actioner "The Mother," in which she sniped her way through wave after wave of bad guys. Unfortunately the film marked yet another moment whereby the streaming age subsumed a former megastar into its nebulous cloud of generic "content." If "The Mother" isn't enough to convince you of such developments, just take a look at "Atlas," the latest Lopez-starring Netflix original film.
It should be said that the trailer for "Atlas" did look promising, but critics certainly aren't too impressed with this sci-fi actioner, which comes from director Brad Peyton ("San Andreas") and also stars Simu Liu, Sterling K. Brown, and Mark Strong. Lopez plays an AI-wary data analyst who quickly finds herself in a situation where she's forced to rely on a synthetic consciousness to survive a mission gone awry. George Miller is astounded by the enduring popularity of the 'Mad Max' franchise. The 79-year-old director has helmed the new dystopian prequel 'Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga' and explained that he never expected it to be captivating audiences over four decades on from the release of the original movie.Asked if he expected the appeal of 'Mad Max' to span generations, George told IndieWire's Filmmaker Toolkit podcast: "Never!"It's best expressed in John Lennon's notion that life is what happens when you're making other plans."Miller explained that the demands of 1979's 'Mad Max' had put him off from directing again and it was only when he began to gauge the world's reaction to the film that he was convinced otherwise. He said: "I began to realise that inadvertently, we had hit on something archetypal."In Japan, he was a samurai.

Could you turn down the exciting idea of George Miller, known for his mythological prowess, breathing new life into Chris Hemsworth’s Thor franchise? After the rollercoaster of feelings that Thor 4 elicited, the audience’s appetite for richness and depth in storytelling stands at an all-time high. Maybe…
Miller’s approach resonates well beyond the box office; his canceled Justice League project, still a lament among superhero aficionados, serves as proof of the vision that could have reinvented DC’s pantheon.

As George Miller’s oil and blood-fuelled Furiosa hits the screens, we ponder what makes a great prequel.
Mild spoilers for The First Omen.
There are a lot of bad prequels. There are some good prequels, but a great prequel is a rare thing to come across. They’re like a rare animal, the unicorns of cinema. Some wonder if such a thing even exists, but when you do watch one, it’s really rather something.
George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga might just be one, a prequel which somehow manages to justify its existence and repeat the exhilarating sense of time and place as Mad Max: Fury Road. I’d be surprised if we saw another action film as handsomely made as Furiosa in 2024. Or 2025. Or 2026.
Prequels are an easy sell for studios, but a hard sell for audiences. For studios, they’re an easy way...

Since Jason1 and Amanda were in a constant state of distress and anxiety, they ended up in realities that were actively trying to kill them. They even got lost in a snowy reality, and they had to use their wits and grit to get back into the box. Meanwhile, Jason2 was chilling in Jason1’s reality. He secured his future by starting negotiations with Leighton1 for the rights to the box so that he could shower Daniela and Charlie with gifts and money. But that didn’t go down well with Daniela at all. Additionally, in an attempt to catch Jason1 and Amanda,...

To say that this Memorial Day weekend was a disappointment at the box office would be a grave understatement. Warner Bros. unleashed director George Miller's "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" in theaters, while Sony Pictures released the family-friendly "The Garfield Movie." On paper, we had a much-anticipated (or so we thought) prequel to "Mad Max: Fury Road," which is one of the most beloved action movies of all time, as well as an animated movie that could get parents out of the house with their kids. In practice, we endured a truly sobering several days' worth of lousy ticket sales.
"Furiosa" topped the charts with a $26.3 million haul through Sunday, with that number growing to $32 million when accounting for the Monday holiday. "Garfield" came in a close second with $24 million over the weekend and $31.1 million through Monday. Both of those numbers were well below industry projections, with "Furiosa" failing...

Another weekend, another bit of very bad news for the movie business. Memorial Day weekend has, historically, been a major frame for the box office, with Disney's "The Little Mermaid" remake pulling in $95.4 million last year. (That number grows to $117.5 million when accounting for the Monday holiday.) That's what we've come to expect, pandemic notwithstanding. Unfortunately, the dual threat of "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" and "The Garfield Movie" didn't prove to be much of a threat at all, as both films fell well short of expectations, leading to a downright terrible holiday weekend. Garfuriosa was, in the end, the direct opposite of last year's Barbenheimer phenomenon in every way imaginable.
Warner Bros.' "Furiosa" took the top spot on the charts, pulling in $26.3 million through Sunday, with that number growing to an estimated $32 million when accounting for Monday. Meanwhile, Sony Pictures' new animated "Garfield" film landed at number two...

George Miller, the legendary filmmaker behind the iconic Mad Max series, is once again delving into monochromatic territory. It’s confirmed that his latest film, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, will receive a black-and-white edition dubbed Tinted Black and Chrome. Miller announced this version during an appearance on Josh Horowitz’s podcast, Happy Sad Confused. The decision to create a monochrome edition stems from his ongoing fascination with the format. As Miller explained, I must say, it’s really interesting. I’m still trying to demystify why the black and white, for me, has something more elemental to it. Miller’s Vision for Furiosa The...

Over the course of 45 years and five films, director George Miller has created something unparalleled in the world of action cinema: an epic franchise that started great (with 1979’s “Mad Max”) and has grown exponentially more audacious, complex, and visionary with each subsequent film. Each time Miller returns to the “Mad Max” universe — from “The Road Warrior” (1981) and “Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome” (1985) to “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2015) — he expands upon and deepens the story with increasing ambition, a project that has now culminated in the most epic (in both length and mythological impact) entry in the series to date, “Furiosa.” The longevity of the series and the enduring fertility of Miller’s imagination have proven one of the movies’ great surprises over the years — especially to Miller himself.
In fact, when asked whether he ever envisioned the “Mad Max” saga lasting for decades, Miller had a quick answer. “Never!” he...

Anya Taylor-Joy is back in action with the Mad Max franchise in an anticipated project, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga alongside Chris Hemsworth. Given that Charlize Theron initially portrayed the role in Mad Max: Fury Road, many are praising the former with which she embodied the latter’s legacy with her spectacular acting prowess.

With the movie already released in theaters, it may surprise many to learn that the lead actress sought advice from X-Men actor Nicholas Hoult. She chose to do this instead of approaching Charlize Theron, who could have offered valuable insights from being in her shoes at first.

Tom Burke says he requested media training from the BBC to help him handle questions about J.K Rowling’s strident views on transgender rights.
Burke is currently on the publicity trail for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, but he has recently filmed Season 6 of BBC/HBO series Strike, which Rowling pens under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith.
The actor told The Independent that he asked for media training ahead of an interview with the publication, during which he was careful to remain neutral on the trans debate.
“I’ll preface all this by saying, what I want for that situation is for it to mend,” he said. “I want those disparate groups to find resolution. I don’t want to say anything in the wrong context, or at the wrong time, which is going to make the situation worse, because it’s not nice, right? There’s so much antipathy going on.

George Miller gives fans a more in-depth look at Chris Hemsworth’s Dementus in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga in a recent interview. The director, who helmed the 45-year-long dystopian epic franchise, also teased another possible spinoff that may dig deeper into the character.

Hemsworth’s antagonistic role is one of the highly anticipated appearances in the movie alongside Anya Taylor-Joy’s Furiosa. The actor, who is known for his Marvel role as Thor, portrayed the villainous warlord with so much conviction.
George Miller Had To Create Dementus’ Backstory
During his interview with Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, director George Miller revealed he made a backstory for Chris Hemsworth’s Dementus. “There is. I had to do it,” he confirmed. He also explained how far the initial concept was as compared with what fans saw on the big screen.

While some might have predicted it, you wouldn’t be wrong in saying that most people were surprised at the low box office debut for “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.” The film has made approximately $33 million over the four-day holiday weekend, which is one of the worst Memorial Weekend debuts in decades. That would seemingly stop all discussion about more ‘Mad Max’ films in the near future, which means ‘The Wasteland’ might not ever see the light of day.

It was reported earlier that The Garfield Movie would be taking first place during the Memorial Day box office weekend, but now that the official numbers are in, we can confirm that Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga managed to win this weekend and beat out the animated movie as the best movie of this week. The overall earnings for the weekend are not that good, but that is a different issue we are going to discuss later in the article. What is important is that we can confirm that Furiosa won at the domestic box office and that its total gross, including the worldwide revenues, is at $64,800,000, according to the numbers published on Box Office Mojo.
If you remember, some earlier reports claimed that The Garfield Movie would surpass Furiosa, but that ultimately did not happen. And while the difference between the two movies is quite small, George Miller...

As far as iconic franchises go, George Miller’s Mad Max films are right up there among Hollywood’s favorite films. Miller created the dystopian action series back in 1979 with Mel Gibson, which was followed by 2 successful sequels in the 80s.

The summer box office opened up to Chris Hemsworth and Anya Taylor-Joy’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. The George Miller directorial served as a prequel and a spinoff to the 2015 Tom Hardy film and carried forward the legacy of practical effects, breathtaking stunt choreography, and pure action. As for its cast, aside from the two headlining leads, it also stars the Thor actor’s wife, Elsa Pataky. However, eagle-eyed viewers could notice a certain oddity revolving around the actress.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga may technically be winning the weekend box office; however, the film has performed quite a bit below the projected expectations. Despite the total numbers of its debut weekend, another version of Furiosa may also become available for fans in the future. Some may recall that George Miller’s previous entry, Mad Max: Fury Road, received a black & white version over a year later, which was dubbed “Black & Chrome.” The black & white version of Fury Road was a vision that Miller had intended, but the studio would not allow it. Instead, Miller had released a post-apocalyptic movie that had a rare rich color saturation.
With the release of Furiosa and its close ties with Fury Road, many fans of Miller’s would wonder if he’d plan on releasing a similar black & white version. ScreenRant has revealed that it is indeed in the cards. Miller...

George Miller's post-apocalyptic franchise Mad Max has reached new heights – now we have five films about road wars and deadly battles in the scorching sands.
With Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga in theaters, we rank all the films in the franchise, from the outright failure to the action masterpiece.
5. Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, 1985
The city of Bartertown is ruled by the treacherous ruler Entity. To consolidate her power, she turned to Max, an unsurpassed master of street fighting. And the law of the Thunderdome arena is extremely cruel: two in, only one out.
Max must lead a group of lost children out of the desert to lay the foundation for a more humane civilization than the one born after the nuclear apocalypse of World War III.
The movie is George Miller's most exotic entry in the entire history of Mad Max – so exotic that fans of the franchise prefer to ignore Beyond Thunderdome.

Chris Hemsworth is a powerhouse when it comes to acting. Having portrayed some of the fiercest and most formidable characters in cinema during his entire career, even the actor’s looks scream that he might be just as tough and intense in real life as he is on-screen most of the time. Despite mostly playing such powerful characters, Hemsworth has a soft, gentle heart.

It seems like any time a younger version of a character appears on screen, we can’t help but immediately compare with the one we’re more familiar with. How often have you said, “That looks nothing like them!”? And while digital de-aging can be done to achieve the desired outcome (depending on the age gap), modern technology has offered yet another way: yes, we’re talking about artificial intelligence. And that’s just what was used to get Anya Taylor-Joy and Alyla Brown in Furiosa to match as closely as possible.

The violent Wasteland of George Millers Mad Max franchise isn't exactly bustling with sympathetic characters, and even the titular protagonist is really more of a reluctant hero doing what he can to survive.
2015's Fury Road did introduce a slightly more selfless take on Max (Tom Hardy) along with a genuinely heroic figure in the form of Furiosa (Charlize Theron), and in addition to charting the origin of the Immortan Joe's Imperator (now played by Anya Taylor-Joy), Miller's prequel, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, features the debut of the thoughtful, compassionate Praetorian Jack (Tom Burke).
Spoilers follow.
Furiosa forms a close (possibly romantic) bond with Jack when she joins his crew, but their relationship comes to a tragic end when Dementus (Chris Hemsworth) and his men ambush the War Rig at the Bullet Farm.

As he did with Mad Max: Fury Road, director George Miller plans to release a monochromatic, Black And Chrome edition of this year’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.
Following in the dusty tyre tracks of 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga could eventually get its own black and white edition.

It’s a title that echoes Black And Chrome, the colour-free edition of Mad Max: Fury Road released in 2016. At the time, Miller described it as “the best version of the movie.”

Jack teaching Furiosa to drive is a key scene,...

Call it a "Mad Max" rite of passage. Ever since director George Miller's 1979 original introduced the world to the utter absurdity that is post-apocalyptic Australia, the gas-guzzling franchise has all but become a genre unto itself. After five total movies, culminating with this past weekend's "Furiosa," audiences are now well aware of what to expect from these idiosyncratic blockbusters.
