Even before the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes of the summer, 2023 marked a pivotal time in TV.
Studios and streamers spent the year compiling a lengthy list of small screen staples ending in 2023 and 2024; the announcements came amidst a string of mergers, strategy pivots, and a smattering of natural narrative conclusions that for good or bad were impacted by the industry-wide work stoppages.
From awards darlings like “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and “The Handmaid’s Tale” (renewed for a sixth and final season expected next year) to tried-and-true audience favorites like “Archer,” “The Blacklist,” and “Riverdale,” many of the TV shows that got the chop this year were considered buzzy cultural touchstones at one time or another.
Emmy winners “Barry” and “Succession” famously both came to an end on May 28 in a doubled-header spring TV finale that closed the curtain on a memorable phase in HBO’s post-“Game of Thrones” recovery.

Most recently, he's starring in the Netflix series "All the Light We Cannot See" alongside Aria Mia Loberti and Mark Ruffalo.
Outside of acting, Laurie is a devoted husband and father. According to The Sun, Laurie met his wife Jo Greene before he was famous. After falling in love, Laurie and Greene welcomed their first child together - a son named Charlie - in 1988. The following year, the couple officially tied the knot in June 1989. Laurie and Greene then welcomed their second son, Bill, in 1991, and their daughter Rebecca in 1992.
Over thirty years later, Laurie and Greene are still happily married.

Amid the “Oppenheimer” anticipation, another bomb has been dropped: Stanley Kubrick’s “Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb” will be adapted as a stage production on the West End.
The project, led by “Veep” and “Avenue 5” creator Armando Iannucci, is the first-ever adaptation of a Kubrick property. Kubrick’s widow, Christiane Kubrick, confirmed the upcoming play based on the 1964 political satire film starring Peter Sellers.
“We have always been reluctant to let anyone adapt any of Stanley’s work, and we never have. It was so important to him that it wasn’t changed from how he finished it,” Christiane told the BBC. “But we could not resist authorizing this project: the time is right, the people doing it are fantastic, and ‘Strangelove’ should be brought to a new and younger audience. I am sure Stanley would have approved it too.”

Plot: Detective Danner returns to help Aniq and Zoë solve whodunnit by questioning family members, star-crossed lovers and business partners, and hearing each suspect’s retelling of the weekend, each with their own unique perspective and visual style.
Review: Last year, AppleTV+ premiered Christopher Miller’s whodunit comedy, The Afterparty, to critical acclaim. Following a Rashomon-esque approach where each murder suspect told their story in a different genre style, the series was as hilarious as it was unique. Bringing The Afterparty back for a second season meant that not only would the creative team have to bring something new to the table, but a cast on par with the all-stars of the first season would need to be recruited. With only Sam Richardson, Zoe Chao, and Tiffany Haddish reprising their roles, The Afterparty‘s second season has delivered another run that is just as good as the first. While there...

In the United Kingdom, Daisy May Cooper is a certified television star, a familiar enough presence as both an actress and series creator that she appeared on the British version of The Masked Singer earlier this spring. She was the Otter.
Had Cooper been revealed on the American Masked Singer in February, Jenny McCarthy probably would have been totally flummoxed. Cooper might have been familiar from a pair of Armando Iannucci projects — The Personal History of David Copperfield and Avenue 5 — but instead of This Country, an award-winning comedy she starred in and created with brother Charlie, we got U.S. remake Welcome to Flatch; and instead of the British smash hit Taskmaster, on which Cooper contributed to the 10th season, we got the American version of Taskmaster, which bombed in its lone Comedy Central season.

‘If You Were the Last’ Review: Zoë Chao and Anthony Mackie Are the Cutest Rom-Com Couple of the Year
“If You Were the Last” officially marks lead star Zoë Chao’s Hollywood takeover. After stealing scenes in Netflix’s return-to-form rom-com “Your Place or Mine” and being a welcome addition to “Party Down” Season 3, Chao leads the indie sci-fi romantic comedy opposite Anthony Mackie. The two leads’ already formidable charisma goes off the charts when they are put side by side. The chemistry? It’s out of this world.
Chao plays astronaut captain Jane, who is trapped in an adrift spaceship with her lieutenant, scientist Adam (Mackie). Three years into a NASA mission, and Jane and Adam are lost, alone with each other, and counting down the days until their inevitable starvation. The film is set in the not-so-distant future where Matt Damon is still around (and still a go-to celebrity to name check), adding a charming familiarity to a film still rooted in the present. The Wes-Anderson-meets-West-Elm mid-century...

The HBO series "Avenue 5" is one of the funniest shows on television. The story, which comes to us from "Veep" creator Armando Iannucci, is set in the near future on a luxury spaceliner that gets knocked off course. Their weeks-long cruise through space has now turned into an eight-year journey. The ship is owned by a billionaire named Herman Judd (Josh Gad), who is ... well, let's say that Elon Musk might recognize himself in this character. Judd wanted the passengers to see only good-looking people in the crew, so he hired a bunch of actors to fake it while the real crew is shoved below deck in a bit of a hovel.
Hugh Laurie plays Captain Ryan Clark, one of the actors who knows nothing about running the ship. The two seasons we have so far have given us a look at a future with extinct camels, no more fruit,...

Actor-turned-filmmaker Alex Winter (Showbiz Kids) has set the murder mystery The Adults, starring Evan Rachel Wood (Westworld), Josh Gad (Avenue 5) and Anthony Carrigan (Barry), as his next project behind the camera, with plans to also act in the pic.

The HBO series "Avenue 5" is one of the funniest shows on television right now, and if you aren't watching, you're missing out. It's set in the future when luxury cruises on spaceships are common. This particular ship, Avenue 5, is owned by obnoxious billionaire Herman Judd (Josh Gad). On one particular cruise, the biggest yoga class ever is held, but after a malfunction, the giant group of bendy people is thrown against one wall, knocking the ship off course. Now their short cruise is going to take three whole years.
The other issue? The only person who could have fixed it is dead. The crew everyone sees is made up of actors, including Hugh Laurie's character Ryan Clark, while the actual crew (minus one engineer) is shoved in a crappy room in the bowels of the ship. Everything goes awry. If this helps you imagine what's going on with this series,...

One of the key distinctions between editing in film or television versus video games is needing to find the best scenes and moments without being able to totally adjust the performances after the fact. This is one of the advantages James Cameron has with the "Avatar" movies, which are essentially hyper-realistic animated films. As a live action TV show though, and not a wholly CGI experience, the editing process for "The Last of Us'' was certain to be extremely different from how the game was made.
Like any film or TV production, not everything filmed could make the final cut, but with its A-list cast and crew, the video game adaptation was sure to face some especially difficult trades in the editing room. The thoughtfulness and precision that goes into the show's cinematography on a frame-by-frame basis further underscores this point.

If you thought the glittering poop cloud around an interplanetary tourist vessel in season 1 of the HBO series "Avenue 5" was funny, season 2 had a lot to show you. It went from wildly funny and a personal favorite to completely outrageous (in the best way).
"Avenue 5" is set 40 years in the future on a ship full of tourists. An accident means their trip of several weeks will take them eight years. Food is down to eels who are dying in the tank (Rip Eel Patrick Harris), and the only hope is a space station that is full of cannibals and pedophiles.

"Avenue 5" is set 40 years in the future when civilian space travel has become big business. A huge spaceliner owned by billionaire (and Elon Musk analog) Herman Judd (Josh Gad) is flying thousands of people on a short luxury cruise. During the largest yoga class in space, events knock the ship out of orbit, meaning that it won't return to Earth for years. At the moment, that number is eight years, but that could change at any time.
The guests see a crew that is made up of actors like Captain Ryan Clark (Hugh Laurie), who is there so Judd and the passengers won't have to look at anyone who is "unattractive," while the actual crew is hidden away. That includes...

Bummed that checkout time has already come for “The White Lotus”? You’re not the only one.
But here’s some good news: If you’re looking to fill the void left by the hit HBO series wrapping up its second season, maybe you’d like some of the shows other “White Lotus” fans have been enjoying lately. And fortunately, here’s the 10 shows “White Lotus” fans have watched the most, according to Whip Media’s viewer data, which is based on first-person data from its TV Time app, a movie and TV tracking app with more than 24 million global registered users.
Maybe none of them can compare to the Cameron-Daphne-Ethan-Harper love square story line, or the Albie-Lucia “romance,” but hey, beggars can’t be choosers. If you need to stream a new show now that “The White Lotus” is shut down until Season 3, one of the following series might...

DC fans have been eagerly anticipating the return of Michael Keaton as Batman in ... well, he was supposed to appear in the canceled "Batgirl," but as far as we know right now, no one will get to look at that. All signs point to the release of "The Flash" — despite the troubling issues with its star Ezra Miller — where Keaton will don the suit of the caped crusader, but nothing is 100 percent right now. While some of us (me ... it's me) are praying to the comic book gods that Keaton's Batman will indeed return, we do have something of his to look forward to.
Michael Keaton will be making his directorial debut in the upcoming noir thriller "Knox Goes Away," which he will also star in. Principal photography has already wrapped on the film, according to Deadline. He's got some drama-heavy hitters involved, including Al Pacino, but also comedy stars like the brilliant Suzy Nakamura.

The cast has been set for Sam Mendes’ upcoming HBO comedy pilot “The Franchise,” which is set in the world of franchise moviemaking.
Billy Magnussen (“No Time to Die”) will star as Adam, Jessica Hynes (“Spaced”) as Steph, Darren Goldstein (“The Affair”) as Pat, Lolly Adefpoe (“Ghosts”) as Dag and Isaac Powell (“Dear Evan Hansen”) as Bryson. Daniel Brühl and Richard E. Grant are also set in recurring roles.
Based on an idea by Mendes, the story follows a hopeful crew trapped inside the dysfunctional, nonsensical, joyous hellscape of franchise superhero movie-making. If and when they finally make the day, questions still loom: Is this Hollywood’s new dawn or cinema’s last stand? Is this a dream factory or a chemical plant?
