If you were a kid growing up in the ’80s, one thing was true. Video games were the spawn of Satan. Okay, we know that isn’t true. But our parents? Adults were terrified of your Atari and your Nintendo, and filmmakers made all sorts of movies that painted games in a negative light. In Wargames a nuclear war was damn near started! While there were plenty of films that understood the imagination and the creative spirit that video games could foster, such as Tron and The Last Starfighter for examples, there’s also a film such as Cloak & Dagger, which goes to some really dark territory to teach a lesson to kids that, honestly, everyone could stand to learn.
Cloak and Dagger starred Henry Thomas. Y’know, the E.T. kid (who we recently profiled on Wtf Happened to this Celeb), who grew up to become the Suicide...

Netflix’s live-action “Avatar: The Last Airbender” series is undergoing a change in leadership.
Variety has learned that Albert Kim, who developed the series and served as showrunner on Season 1, is stepping down. Christine Boylan and Jabbar Raisani will lead the show as executive producers going forward. Netflix has already announced the show has been renewed for two more seasons, concluding with Season 3.
Boylan served as co-executive producer on Season 1 of “Last Airbender,” while Raisani was an executive producer, director, and a VFX supervisor. Kim will remain onboard as an executive producer for Seasons 2 and 3. According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, Kim wanted to explore new opportunities following the multi-year development process on “Last Airbender” and has signed a deal with Disney to work as an executive producer on the “Percy Jackson” series while also developing new projects for that company.

About a year and a half ago, it was announced that Shawnee Smith of the Saw franchise had signed on to star in a horror movie called The Skulleton. The The Langoliers episode of Wtf Happened to This Adaptation? was Written and Narrated by Andrew Hatfield, Edited by Mike Conway, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian. Here is the text of Hatfield’s script:
Well, it’s time to let the King have his moment again. This is Stephen King’s second go around on the show and while Silver Bullet based on Cycle of the Werewolf is a minor cult classic, it’s not one of the bigger adaptations out of his overall catalogue. Taylor Sheridan's "Yellowstone" has always had a terrific cast, but a particular masterstroke of casting came in the show's second season finale, during a flashback in which John Dutton III (Kevin Costner) takes his dying father, John Dutton, Jr., up to the mountains for one last ride. The patriarch is played by the great Dabney Coleman, an actor partially known for playing hard-ass characters in things like "WarGames" and "Cloak and Dagger." We don't see him for long in "Yellowstone," but in his short amount of screen time, he leaves a tremendous impact -- not only in the emotional conversation he has with his son, but his edict to never give up an inch of the Dutton Ranch fuels Costner's character throughout the whole series.
Coleman's history of playing tenacious characters on screen is an excellent example of what can happen when actors carry the right kind of...

Spoiler Alert: This contains spoilers from “Shortcomings, now in theaters.
When Ally Maki received the script for Randall Park’s “Shortcomings,” she read it in one sitting and knew she had to be a part of it. Whether it was just to audition or land the role, “I’d be happy to just perform that piece, the opening which was a nine-pager,” says the actor, who has appeared in shows including “Wrecked” and “Hacks.”
Maki ended up landing the role of Miko, who is in a complicated relationship with her boyfriend, Ben (Justin H. Min) which slowly disintegrates when he is caught surfing porn on the internet, and Miko takes a leap, accepting an internship in New York.
Maki spoke with Variety about working with Park, playing a character that resonated with her own heritage and experiences in the film with a predominantly Aapi cast and her apparel company Asian American Girl Club.

Apple TV+”s The Big Door Prize comes armed with a deceptively simple elevator pitch. Based on a book of the same name by M.O. Walsh, this 10 episode series ponders “if a nondescript machine in a corner store promised to tell you your ultimate destiny, would you want to know it?”
At first, you might be thinking “sure, why not?” That concept is not markedly different from what a psychic or boardwalk fortune teller might guarantee. And in the case of the butterfly-branded “Morpho machine,” receiving your reading would actually be far cheaper at only $2. It’s all just fun and games, now who has four quarters?
But what if seemingly everyone in your small American town who utilized the Morpho machine appeared to be fundamentally changed by the experience? What if dozens of your peers completely rearranged the details of their lives to better fit its ultimate vision for them?...

A world of vampires, werewolves and wizards is on its way to screens big and small.
Married writer-producers Eric Heisserer (“Shadow and Bone”) and Christine Boylan (“The Punisher”) and production company Hivemind have partnered with game publisher Paradox Interactive to develop the World of Darkness story universe for film and television.
Launched in 1991 with the tabletop roleplaying game “Vampire: The Masquerade,” the World of Darkness universe includes other properties like “Werewolf: The Apocalypse,” “Mage: The Ascension,” “Orpheus,” and “Hunter: The Reckoning,” and has expanded to video games, comic books, novels, virtual reality and card and board games. From the outset, the franchise has set itself apart in the world of science-fiction/fantasy by putting players inside the shoes — or claws, or wings — of a vast and interconnected coterie of monsters who live amongst humanity, and then forcing them to make complicated moral decisions about how to slake their character’s darkest urges.

Oscar-nominated Arrival writer Eric Heisserer, writer-producer Christine Boylan and Hivemind, which produces Netflix’s The Witcher, have teamed with Paradox Interactive to develop a film and TV franchise around the role-playing game World of Darkness.
The World of Darkness universe launched in 1991 with Vampire: The Masquerade. Today IPs under the brand include Werewolf: The Apocalypse, Mage: The Ascension, Orpheus and Hunter: The Reckoning which have spawned video games, virtual reality, card and board games, comic books, novels and original tabletop role-playing games. World of Darkness is known for its hybrid of horror, science fiction and fantasy where the protagonists are monsters in complex moral situations.
“The World of Darkness story universe is deliberately and unapologetically inclusive and diverse,” says Boylan. “It has always made a point of including equal gendered characters, protagonists and antagonists of every race, and representation of all creeds – bringing a female and diverse audience to gaming like nothing prior.

And another Freeform show bites the dust.
Siren has been canceled after three seasons at the young-skewing cabler, it has been announced.
In its third -- and now final -- season, Siren averaged a 0.11 demo rating and 410,000 total viewers (in Live+Same day numbers).
This is down 30 and 15 percent from one year earlier.
Out of the seven series currently on Freeform’s slate, it ranks second in the demo (trailing only grown-ish) and No. 1 in total audience.
As such, the cancellation is somewhat surprising.
The series took place coastal town of Bristol Cove, Washington, known for its legends of once being home to mermaids and mermen for centuries.
The town is turned upside down when a mysterious young woman (Eline Powell) appears and begins wreaking havoc upon the small fishing town to look for her captured older sister (Sibongile Mlambo) who was abducted at the hands of the local military.

With Marvel taking its television spinoffs to Disney+ and making them more high-profile and important to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, one does get a little nostalgic for the default kind of Marvel show. The kind that takes place in that universe, but probably won’t get any references on the big screen. The kind of show where you’d see someone like Quake or the Defenders or the Runaways or Cloak and Dagger. While we wait for them to announce a series for D-Man or NFL Superpro, we can at least get ready for this October’s Helstrom.
Helstrom is the story of two siblings who investigate and hunt down the worst of humanity, including literal demons. Daimon Helstrom (Tom Austen) and Ana Helstrom (Sydney Lemmon) are the title characters, inspired to hunt evildoers due to their father being some kind of otherworldly serial killer. Coronavirus. It sounds like the title of a classic Bond movie, à la “GoldenEye,” “Moonraker” or “Octopussy.”
April 10 was supposed to see the release of Bond’s latest adventure, “No Time to Die.” Instead, action fans are stuck at home, an invisible villain is threatening world domination, and 007 has done the unthinkable: He’s chickened out and gone into hiding, leaving us to sort out this catastrophe on our own, only to circle back and “die another day” when the smoke clears.
Not cool, 007. Not cool.
Fortunately, no franchise has inspired more imitations, homages and parodies than Bond, leaving us with plenty of backup options available for home viewing. So if you’re thirsting for Bond and a well-shaken quarantini won’t quench it, here are 14 (the double of seven) recommendations to tide you over.

Why not start with the movie that proved Daniel Craig could fill Sean Connery’s shoes?...

There’s a certain funereal atmosphere surrounding the impending release of the third season of Marvel’s Runaways. Season 3 has already been announced as the series’ last, as Marvel’s original television programming arm is slowly being smothered in the name of corporate synergy.
The consolidation of the Marvel brand—and all iterations of the McU as we understand it, whether on the big screen or the small—underneath the umbrella of Disney+ isn’t unexpected. In fact, it makes a lot of sense, allowing viewers a one-stop shop for all their superhero programming needs.

According to an individual close to the series, the creative team felt that the third season provided a natural ending point for the show.
It is worth nothing, however, that “Runaways” was one of the few remaining live-action shows under the Marvel Television umbrella as set up by Jeph Loeb. With the end of “Runaways,” the only remaining live-action shows under Loeb’s purview are “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D,” which will end with its upcoming seventh season on ABC, and “Helstrom,” another Hulu series that recently set its main cast. Yet another Marvel Television production came to an end recently with the cancellation of Cloak & Dagger. Freeform axed the McU show after its second season last week, causing much outcry from fans of the teen-oriented superhero series. While traditional Marvel TV is drying up, Marvel Studios is still forging ahead with its own small screen projects on Disney Plus and this, we’re told, could mean there’s a future for Cloak and Dagger, after all.
We Got This Covered has heard from our sources – the same ones who told us Wiccan will debut in WandaVision and that General Ross will appear in She-Hulk, both of which have since been corroborated by numerous other outlets – that Marvel aims to continue Cloak & Dagger on the streaming site with stars Olivia Holt and Aubrey Joseph returning as Tandy Bowen and Tyrone Johnson, respectively.

Marvel series don’t seem to be doing all that well when it comes to staying on the air, have you noticed? The Punisher, Daredevil, The Defenders, Iron Fist….well we can kind of understand that one. But apart from the bad outing of the supposed ‘white savior’ that was Iron Fist it would seem that Marvel just hasn’t cracked the code yet when it comes to keeping their shows on the air. That’s kind of odd since in the movies they’ve been nothing less than great, but as Lesley Goldberg of The Hollywood Reporter revealed the show has been losing in

Marvel TV’s live-action “Ghost Rider” series is no longer moving forward at Hulu, an individual with knowledge of the project confirmed to TheWrap.
The series, which would have starred Gabriel Luna in the same role he played in Marvel’s “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” reached a creative impasse that could be not be resolved, the individual added. “Ghost Rider” was picked up along with another live-action series, “Helstrom,” which remains on track.
“Ghost Rider” revolved around the Robbie Reyes version of the character that Luna played on “S.H.I.E.L.D.” (Nicolas Cage played the Johnny Blaze version of the comic book character in a pair of films). Hulu described the character as a quintessential antihero, consumed by hellfire and supernaturally bound to a demon. Exclusive: Freeform has picked up new holiday movie Turkey Drop, from Muse Entertainment, starring Olivia Holt (Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger) for premiere during the network’s Kick Off to Christmas programming block in November.
Written by Tiffany Paulsen (Adventures In Babysitting) Turkey Drop stars Holt as Lucy Jacobs, a small-town girl who has started her freshman year at a big-city university. When Lucy returns home for Thanksgiving break, she suspects she’s about to get turkey dropped — dumped by her high school sweetheart — during their holiday visit. To avoid a Turkey Day travesty, Lucy gets out of her comfort zone, proving she’s not the same, play-it-safe girl she was with her high school boyfriend. As she takes control of her own life and makes choices that put herself first, she learns to let go of what’s been holding her back, helping achieve what she truly wants out of life.

It's official! The Runaways are set to meet Cloak and Dagger when the former has its Season 3 release on Hulu in December.
Ever since Marvel's Runaways and Marvel's Cloak and Dagger first premiered, people have been asking about the potential for a crossover event. We talked to Cloak and Dagger showrunner Joe Pokaski about that Season 2 ending.
This Cloak and Dagger article contains spoilers for the end of Season 2.
Cloak and Dagger Season 2 ends on a quiet, yet incredibly powerful note: with Tandy and Tyrone holding hands, on a bus, heading out of New Orleans to use their superhero powers to help people elsewhere for a while.
Where is that bus heading?
"Yes, there is a specific place. I can tell you nothing else," showrunner and episode writer Joe Pokaski told Den of Geek during a phone interview prior to the finale's airing.
Our official guess is New York City, where the original comic book versions of Tandy and Tyrone meet as runaways and are injected with an experimental drug that gives them superpowers. (Though we wouldn't say no to Los Angeles, and that Cloak and Dagger/Runaways crossover that feels so damn organic.

Deadline reports that Freeform has neglected to renew Marvel's Cloak and Dagger for a third season, effectively cancelling the show. Deadline notes that the options on the cast expired last week so it's unlikely that this current iteration of Cloak and Dagger would be revived at Disney+.

“We are so proud of Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger and the trailblazing stories this series told,” Freeform said in a statement to Deadline. “We are also grateful to our incredible talent Olivia Holt and Aubrey Joseph for bringing these beloved characters to life, and showrunner Joe Pokaski for his vision. We’d like to thank our...

We talked to Cloak and Dagger showrunner Joe Pokaski about that Luke Cage reference and what it means for the series' timeline.
More than perhaps any other show in the Marvel universe, Cloak and Dagger is great at consistently and organically dropping lines that casually solidify its connection to the rest of this rich, fictional world.
One of the best examples came in the penultimate episode of Cloak and Dagger Season 2. In "Blue Note," we see Tyrone (aka Cloak) and Solomon, a kid who works for one of the local gangs, discuss Luke Cage. Here's an excerpt of the much longer scene, which is really worth tracking down to watch in its entirety...

Cloak and Dagger Season 2, Episode 10
Sometimes, it's easier to see the people you love than it is to see yourself, easier to treat the people you love with kindness than it is to treat yourself with kindness. The Cloak and Dagger Season 2 finale hammers this point home, allowing Tyrone and Tandy to tell the Darkforce versions of their own nightmares just how resilient their respective best friend is and, in the process, begin to love themselves a little bit better, too.
"I see that you need someone to tell you that she came out the other side a hero," Ty tells the Darkforce manifestation of Tandy's abusive father. "My best friend was strong enough to hold himself up in a...

All the world loves Jackie Chan, whose cinematic action pictures bridge the gap between silent-era virtuosity and slick modernity. As light comedy entertainment these first two Police Story smash ‘n’ bash epics of eye-popping jeopardy are suitable as ‘family entertainment’ as well. Jackie is a marvelous hero, while Maggie Cheung is an old fashioned girl who doesn’t mind being threatened, kidnapped and occasionally having her scalp split open. You will believe that men can tumble from high roosts onto concrete, and smash through acres of glass countertops without receiving a scratch necessarily going straight to emergency surgery. Criterion has created beautiful new masters, with original soundtracks and extras to make every foolish Jackie Chan fan try some ridiculously dangerous stunt for themselves!

Okay, so after all of my complaining over last week’s episode, I am happy to say that this week’s Cloak & Dagger episode, “Blue Note” was actually very good. I still have some issues, which maybe just more of a personal thing, and my personal qualms will be the basis for this week’s review. With […]
