Christmas movies suggest family-friendly, heartwarming tales, designed for peak holiday family moviegoing. And then there’s the other kind — the late-breaking, high-profile, A-list titles designed to hit the box office and Oscar voters’ consciousness. Some of these launched at prestige fall film festivals (“Downsizing,” “Molly’s Game,” “Hostiles,” “Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool”); others are bonafide awards contenders (Steven Spielberg’s “The Post” and Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Phantom Thread”); and some, like Hugh Jackman vanity musical “The Greatest Showman,” will soon skid into either bad reviews or audience reaction, or both.
Herewith, a ranking of the Christmas movies in order of their likely Oscar prospects.
“The Post” (Fox, December 22)
Metascore: 82.
Strengths: Steven Spielberg’s riveting paean to newspaper journalism and freedom of the press couldn’t be more timely. Early reviews are strong for this true story about The Washington Post’s publication of the Pentagon Papers,...

Are Zac Efron and Rebecca Ferguson dating? Fans would certainly like the answer to be yes!
People are blowing up social media with speculation that The Greatest Showman co-stars are romantically involved after Efron shared a couple of flirty pics of the two this month.
Efron first took to Instagram on Dec. 1 to share a photo of him and Ferguson in costume on set of the film, writing, "A pic is worth a thousand words. Only ones I can think of now are: wtf were u thinking dude?! Look at her!! #GreatestShowman #RebeccaFerguson."
And on Dec. 10, Efron proved that he "finally looked" with a sweet pair of the two promoting The Greatest Showman. While the caption and photo seem innocent enough, the 30-year-old actor added a heart-eye emoji -- and sent fans into a frenzy.
While Efron seems to have eyes for Ferguson, he couldn't help but gush about onscreen love interest in The Greatest Showman, Zendaya, while...

When audiences see the choreographed routines in The Greatest Showman, it'll look effortless. But as Zendaya said on The Tonight Show Monday, actually making the movie was anything but. Zendaya plays acrobat Anne Wheeler in the movie, co-starring Rebecca Ferguson, Hugh Jackman and Michelle Williams. Zac Efron plays Anne's love interest, stage actor Phillip Carlyle. Before production began, director Michael Gracey gave Zendaya advice. "He called and said, 'Listen, we're going to workshop this like a real Broadway production.' I was like, 'Cool! That's great,'" she said. "Then he's like, 'Also, you might want to start working out, because you have trapeze rehearsal...

“Don’t Judge a Book by Its Cover” is a proverb whose simple existence proves the fact impressionable souls will do so without fail. This monthly column focuses on the film industry’s willingness to capitalize on this truth, releasing one-sheets to serve as not representations of what audiences are to expect, but as propaganda to fill seats. Oftentimes they fail miserably.

A huge variety of new trailers dropped this week, and they all look crazy good. There’s everything from new Dwayne Johnson to John Krasinski’s directorial debut to a Hugh Jackman musical. Read on to get the best of this week’s trailers!
We firstly want to mention the first trailer for Rampage, based on the ‘80s arcade game of the same name and starring Dwayne Johnson. The Rock plays a scientist-type who finds himself battling horrifically mutated giant animals, including the albino gorilla he rescued from the wild. This is 100% as wild as it sounds, and we honestly think the trailer speaks for itself. Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Naomie Harris also star. Catch Rampage in Cineplex theatres April 20th.

Terrible films are 10 a penny, but making something as magnificently, joyously awful as Showgirls or The Snowman? That takes real skill. Here are the rules of the Truly Bad Movie
Few things in life can rival the joy of watching a truly bad movie. Those of us who savour inept, high-profile, well-funded bombs can only look with pity on our forebears who had the misfortune to be born before motion pictures were invented. Unlike modern film buffs, who can conjure up literally thousands of bad films with just a few keystrokes (thanks to the cultural abyss that is Netflix), our luckless ancestors were forced to make do with bad plays, bad operas, bad circuses, bad auto-da-fés. How they got through their culturally barren lives without bad motion pictures is one of the great mysteries in human history. I know I couldn’t do it. Luckily we have had two films...

Michael Fassbender plays a Norwegian detective with the high school bully magnet name of “Harry Hole” on the icy trail of a serial killer who always leaves a snowman at his crime scenes. Based on the, um, Hole literary series by Norwegian writer Jo NesbØ, the thriller also stars Rebecca Ferguson as a damaged policewoman trying to solve the crimes, Oscar-winner J.K. (Kilmer’s rumored bout with cancer has sadly taken a toll as the actor looks nothing like the blonde Adonis he was in Top Gun and Batman Forever. It also sounded like he was dubbed throughout.) Although the Nordic scenery looks bleakly majestic due to Dion Beebe’s stunning cinematography and soaring helicopter shots, the plot twists and turns into a slushy mess.

Chicago – The biggest mystery in “The Snowman” is what in the world talented actors like Michael Fassbender, Chloe Sevigny, Toby Jones, and Val Kilmer are doing here in the first place. Fassbender’s character’s name alone should have sent off alarm bells. This is based on a series of detective novels featuring detective Harry Hole, and characters have voluminous opportunities to repeat it, although with nary a snigger.

Hole (giggle) is on the trail of a serial killer who strikes at first snowfall and makes a habit of dismembering his victims and turning them into Snowmen. It’s not that disposable pop pulp like this can’t be well made, it’s that it’s rare to see such a cornucopia of awfulness all in one place. Fassbender’s detective is supposed to be one of those brilliant alcoholic legends, but we aren’t treated to much in the way of brilliance.

There aren’t words in the English language which can adequately describe how terrible The Snowman is. Talented director Tomas Alfredson (Let the Right One In and Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy) has let the press know that “10-15% of the screenplay” was never shot during principal photography, which certainly explains why nothing in the movie makes a shred of sense.
The film might be about a detective (Michael Fassbender) who is partnering but not partnering with another detective (Rebecca Ferguson) to track someone who may or may not be a serial killer, the identity of whom may or may not be traced back to a prologue which is undeniably heavy-handed and portentous...

Ever looked at something and thought where did it all go wrong? Sometimes a movie has everything going for it, a great concept, a great cast, a great crew and some stunning ideas and then it just flat out does not work. Remember Hancock and how it derailed? Or Neveldine/Taylor’s Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance? Well, I’m sad to report that director Tomas Alfredson’s (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Let The Right One In) adaptation of Jo Nesbø’s novel The Snowman is a real disappointment to fans of the book and newcomers alike.
From the bleak first scene to the impressive who’s who opening credits backed by Marco Beltrami’s unnerving scoring (which practically melts away into unremarkable territory after this point), this is a film that looks like it could have that lingering Scandinavian Drama/Thriller inspired chill and a real horrific thrill. The Universal and Working Title film, from Swedish director Tomas Alfredson (Let the Right One In, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) and executive producer Martin Scorsese, follows a detective (Fassbender) who teams up with a new recruit (Rebecca Ferguson) to track down a serial killer who builds a snowman each time he strikes.

From Silence of the Lambs (1991), to Zodiac (2007), to Se7en (1995), detective thrillers can prove to be a great escape for the moviegoing audience. It puts us in the shoes of a profession we’ll probably never be in and most of the time it asks us to participate in actively solving the mystery at hand. You usually receive the clues at the same time the characters do and it can be endlessly engaging to help solve the puzzle. When the genre works, it works well. When it doesn’t, you get movies like The Snowman. The intentions might have been to produce a film in the same vein as the previously mentioned thrillers, but The Snowman completely misses the mark. With a plot that is scattered, a terribly miscast group of actors, and shaky direction, The Snowman is a slow-burn that eventually melts from its own stupidity.

Director Tomas Alfredson helmed a pair of outstanding films, the gripping ground-breaking Swedish vampire film Let The Right One In, and Tailor, Tinker, Soldier, Spy, a moody, first-rate film adaptation of John LeCarre’s brainy bestselling spy novel. So one has to wonder what on earth happened with his latest film The Snowman, a crime thriller that boasts a cast including Michael Fassbender, Charlotte Gainsbourg, J.K. Simmons, Toby Jones, Val Kilmer, and Chloe Sevigny. The Snowman is not merely bad, it is outright awful. Reportedly, even the director thinks the film is bad, expressing frustration the conditions under which it was made.

The biggest mystery within Tomas Alfredson’s The Snowman concerns its own creation. How exactly did a movie like this get made by the people involved? It’s not a rhetorical question. If anyone reading knows something more than has been reported, please reply in the comments.
Starring Michael Fassbender as Detective Harry Hole, this yarn (from the novel of the same name by Jo Nesbø) concerns a serial killer with a penchant for making… well you know… and butchering women of a certain sort. Rebecca Ferguson serves as Hole’s colleague in a performance that feels so brutally fractured by whatever happened in the editing process that it demands an explanation.
The action is set in Norway, with flashbacks (starring a badly re-recorded Val Kilmer) meant to connect certain motivations to the present day. Like most of the film, it doesn’t really work. The central mystery never feels...

2017-10-19T07:20:45-07:00Madea Will Likely Scare Up a Win at the Box Office This Weekend
Tyler Perry has already cranked out a sequel to last year's Boo! A Madea Halloween, and it's probably going to win the box-office race this weekend. It's going to face competition, however, from a few newcomers and last week's winner, Happy Death Day. One new movie that isn't likely to have a happy weekend is the big-budget disaster flick, Geostorm; this one is being hidden from critics ahead of its release, a reliable sign that its studio thinks it has a stinker on its hands.

Tyler Perry's comedy-horror sequel Boo 2! A Madea Halloween is tipped to win a crowded race at the box office weekend with a $20 million-plus debut.
Perry, who directed the Lionsgate release, reprises his role as Madea in the follow up to Boo!

Panned by critics, mystery thriller The Snowman is a curious misfire from some great actors and filmmakers. So what happened?

Most great crime thrillers hook us in with a mystery: who's the killer? The Snowman, released earlier this month to a blizzard of chilly reviews, offers another conundrum that lurks just outside the frame: how did a film with such a sterling pedigree go so bafflingly wrong?
The plot, as laid out in Jo Nesbo's best-selling novel of the same name, sounds like decent fodder for a disturbing thriller in the vein of Seven or The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

Michael Fassbender has a new title -- husband -- but before that, he was known as the Karaoke King!
Et's Carly Steel spoke with the actor about his new movie, The Snowman, earlier this month (before his wedding to Alicia Vikander), where he opened up about his love for the party activity.
"I wouldn't say [I'm a Karaoke King]," Fassbender humbly confessed. "I mean, enthusiastic, I would say... [I do it] whenever I can."
"It's just whatever's playing in my head," he described. "Like, if you say something, like a trigger word, that could make me sing a song. Like, the guy just came in and said we met in Vienna, and I was like... I started singing 'Don't Cry for Me Argentina.'"

Rebecca Ferguson is used to living between two worlds, so she felt right at home making the gory mystery The Snowman.
“It’s by a studio from America and an incredible Swedish director,” Ferguson says over the phone from London. The 34-year-old actor’s mom was English but her dad was Swedish and Ferguson, whose full name is Rebecca Louisa Ferguson Sundström, was born and raised in Stockholm.
“I got to work with Michael Fassbender, run around in deep snow in Norway — which, by the way, if you’ve never been, you should go. It is breathtakingly beautiful up there!”

“The Snowman” hasn’t had an easy ride to the big screen. The adaptation of Jo Nesbo‘s best-seller may have assembled a helluva cast including Michael Fassbender, Rebecca Ferguson, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Chloe Sevigny, and more, and snared director Tomas Alfredson (“Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy,” “Let The Right One In“), but the production wasn’t easy, and early reviews weren’t kind.

Swedish director Tomas Alfredson has earned acclaim for efforts like “Let the Right One In” and the Oscar-nominated “Tinker Tailor Solider Spy,” but his new film, “The Snowman,” is better off forgotten. The murder mystery from Universal Pictures opens in theaters Friday and has earned abysmal reviews from critics, with IndieWire slamming its “laughable missteps” in a C- review. The film currently has a 24% on Rotten Tomatoes after 24 reviews, and Alfredson is well aware his film is bombing with critics.
In an interview with Nrk, the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation, Alfredson explained why the movie ended up being a misfire: “Our shoot time in Norway was way too short, we didn’t get the whole story with us and when we started cutting we discovered that a lot was missing.”

MaryAnn’s quick take… A clichéd loose-cannon cop is on a case of murdered women in faux Norway. And it’s not even a decent procedural. Sexist, pointless, thoroughly awful. I’m “biast” (pro): love the cast; love a good murder mystery
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
I have not read the source material
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
He’s a drunk — like, a seriously falling-down, passed-out-in-the-streets drunk — and a walking personal disaster. His ex just can’t live with him anymore and refuses to tell their teenaged son that he is, in fact, the kid’s dad, he’s that unreliable, but she nevertheless continues to find him irresistibly attractive. He’s a cop who goes to pieces without a case, but with a case, he’s utterly brilliant (but also still a drunk). Which is why his boss covers for him,...

The campaign for serial killer thriller The Snowman has gone viral for all the wrong reasons, and it’s not the first time a designer has caused accidental lols
Although I’m obviously no expert, it wouldn’t surprise me if The Snowman turned out to be a historic flop. That isn’t a slight against Jo Nesbo or Michael Fassbender or Rebecca Ferguson or Tomas Alfredson, who are all talented people. But it is a slight against whoever’s in charge of The Snowman’s marketing campaign, because it is absolutely preposterous.

We’re witnessing the last laps of the Scandinavian crime wave, that border-crossing multimedia movement that washed so much frosty-to-glacial genre fiction onto our shores and screens. The detective heroes of TV imports “Wallander” and “The Bridge” walked into the low winter sunset, while the “Girl With Dragon Tattoo” cycle has stalled to a point where reboots have been decreed necessary. Adapting “The Snowman,” one of Norwegian scribe Jo Nesbø’s bestselling Harry Hole mysteries, isn’t the studios’ worst idea of 2017. Yet it does feel like a tardy one, and despite the industry heft thrown at Tomas Alfredson’s film, its execution leaves much to be desired.
Beyond these stellar opening credits, there stretch two hours of icy, mostly lifeless waste. Nesbø’s seventh Hole book provides the basis for this first movie, hence a certain front-loading of defective-detective tics. Michael Fassbender’s Harry is discovered blotto in an Oslo bus shelter,...

“I apologise for Oslo’s low murder rate,” says a police chief when boozy detective Harry Hole (Michael Fassbender) complains about a lack of satisfying mysteries to solven one bitter winter morning. It was six years ago that Joe Cornish broke out with “Attack The Block,” and the wait has been far too long for something new from the filmmaker. Thankfully, he’s currently filming his next feature, “The Kid Who Would Be King,” which features among others Rebecca Ferguson and Patrick Stewart but to be honest, there’s something else we would’ve preferred going in front of cameras: “Snow Crash.” Cornish signed up to bring Neal Stephenson‘s cyberpunk novel to the big screen hot on the heels of “Attack The Block,” but things stalled out.
