When "The Twilight Zone" first began broadcasting in October 1959, there was a lot of skepticism in the air. Rod Serling's now-celebrated sci-fi anthology series was by no means a guaranteed success (few things are), and Serling was careful to talk about his show at every available opportunity. In Marc Scott Zicree's book "The Twilight Zone Companion," Serling confessed, "I make no bones about taking every opportunity to blatantly plug my show." The series featured excellent writing, memorably twisted stories, and a stable of upcoming talent that is still remarked on to this day, but none of that meant that Serling wasn't constantly hustling. Evidently, he conducted interviews with every publication that would have him.
At the time, the main criticism of "The Twilight Zone" was that it was too cerebral. Every episode was a "thinker," and, as always, television executives didn't expect their audiences to think. It was...

Production on the upcoming Apple TV+ limited series “Before,” starring Billy Crystal, is being shut down until the Writers Guild strike ends, an individual with knowledge of the matter confirmed to TheWrap Thursday.
The series, which comes from Paramount Television Studios, stars Crystal as a child psychologist and recent widower who encounters a troubled young boy. The series is written by Sarah Thorp (“The Bounty Hunter”) and Adam Bernstein (“Fargo”) is directing the pilot. Crystal, Thorp, Bernstein, Jet Wilkinson (“The Old Man”) and Eric Roth (“Dune”) serve as executive producers for the series.
The series had been filming in Hoboken, New Jersey, and was temporarily shut down by WGA picketing earlier this month before being placed on an indefinite pause. Other series that have been halted on the East Coast include Disney+’s “Daredevil: Born Again” and Max’s “The Penguin.” In Montana, the “Yellowstone” prequel “1923” was also put on hold until the strike ends.

“The Old Man” features a pair of performances from two septuagenarian performers that make this FX series pretty close to perfect. The show follows Oscar-winner Jeff Bridges as a retired CIA agent (Dan Chase) who is forced into hiding after he kills an intruder who breaks into his house. The hunt for Chase is overseen by none other than John Lithgow, who plays Harold Harper — FBI Assistant Director for Counterintelligence. As Harper, Lithgow uses his intelligence as a performer to paint a picture of a world-weary man who makes his trades with secrets and feels the weight of that after so many years. Lithgow is an actor who brings weight and wit to any role, and critics agree that this is another fine turn from the thespian.
Nick Schager (The Daily Beast) explained: “Bridges and Lithgow seize every available opportunity to imbue their archetypal characters with a world-weariness that’s...

Oscar-winning John Wayne was one of the biggest stars ever to work in Hollywood, which made sellers on Pawn Stars believe that they could make good money from his memorabilia. In the spirit of the reality television show, many items aren’t valued at the price that they’re thinking. However, Wayne’s son, Ethan, himself showed up as an expert in what fans are calling the best guest appearance ever in an odd Rio Grande dealing.
John Wayne memorabilia landed on ‘Pawn Stars’ before John Wayne as Lieutenant Colonel Kirby Yorke | Silver Screen Collection/Getty Images
Pawn Stars attracted several pieces of Wayne memorabilia, although they didn’t all attract the same level of attention. Surprisingly, a senior-year high school yearbook earned $800 for the seller to take a nice vacation with. It highlighted the various extracurricular activities that he filled his time with over the course of his adolescence.

"RoboCop" was a hot favorite on the school playground when I was a kid. Stories of brutal cop killings and boardroom bloodbaths joined the head-popping scene from "Scanners" and the gruesome exploits of Freddy Krueger as the kind of viewing choice that separated the cool kids from the rest of us. Or at least, separated those who had access to their parents' video rental card from those who didn't.
I caught up with it again several years ago after a gap of about two decades, going in expecting a blast of pure '80s nostalgia. I got a blast alright, but there was nothing sentimental about it. Seeing it again as an adult made me realize that "RoboCop" isn't just a fun movie, it's a great one. Paul Verhoeven directs the hell out of it and there is plenty of substance and style to go with the over-the-top action.

We're back at the Hollywood ballot box, folks. Awards season is back upon us, and we're starting off strong with some major contenders for the 2023 Screen Actors Guild Awards Awards. "The White Lotus" star Haley Lu Richardson and "Emily in Paris" star Ashley Park announced the nominations via livestream early on January 11. The ceremony will be next month on February 26 and will be accessible for viewing via YouTube and Netflix. SAG used to have an air deal with TBS and TNT — which is probably where you remember watching the SAGs if you've been a viewer in the past — but that deal expired last year.
As for the slate of film nominees, a lot of the patterns we've seen so far are continuing. Brandon Fraser is getting praise for his emotional turn in "The Whale," and Cate Blanchett is getting her flowers for her fierce performance in "Tár." But something cool...

The White Lotus was the only other series to pick up multiple nominations, with Jennifer Coolidge landing one.
There was also a lot of new blood in the awards, with HBO's House of the Dragon winning the best drama series.
There were also awards for The Bear, Yellowstone, and Dahmer.
HBO dominated the networks, with four wins, while ABC netted three, and Hulu and Netflix each had two.

The Golden Globes are officially back on television.
After a hiatus in 2022 due to protests about the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s perceived lack of diversity, the award show has undergone a massive restructuring before returning to television screens next week. The organization announced plans to shift from a nonprofit to a for-profit entity under the stewardship of Eldridge Industries, a firm run by HFPA interim CEO Todd L. Boehly. The organization also added more journalists of color to its ranks in an attempt to increase diversity among winners and nominees.
All that change has ensured that, at least for the moment, the Golden Globe Awards television broadcast you know is back on the airwaves. The 2023 Golden Globes will be broadcast live from the Beverly Hilton hotel in Los Angeles on Tuesday, January 10 at 8 p.m. E.T./ 5 p.m. P.T. The show is set to air on NBC...

After being consistently overlooked since 2016, “Better Call Saul” has finally received its first Best Drama Series Golden Globe nomination. This long overdue recognition comes for the AMC program’s sixth and final season, which aired in two parts over the spring and summer of 2022. The prequel and sequel series to “Breaking Bad” has already followed its predecessor by only catching the attention of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association with its bifurcated last batch of episodes, and it could now further emulate it by pulling off a last minute victory in the top category.
“Breaking Bad” won Best Drama Series in 2014 immediately after the first half of its fifth season came up short against “Homeland.” 13 years after first being introduced as Walter White’s sleazy strip mall lawyer, Jimmy “Saul Goodman” McGill’s story has come to an end, and Bob Odenkirk’s portrayal of the character has earned him his...

When Bob Clark’s “A Christmas Story” hit theaters the week before Thanksgiving 1983, no one could have foreseen the cultural impact the family comedy would have on the holiday film canon. A modest box office showing (it took in 2 million its first week and failed to crack 20 million during its full run), mixed reviews, and some awards attention from Canada’s Genie Awards added up to a hazy picture of a film that was good enough but hardly a game-changer. Later, of course, came the television airings, landing the film in near-constant rotation during the holiday season and turning it into an unexpected holiday favorite. Familiarity, it seems, didn’t breed contempt when it came to this TNT and TBS staple; it only inspired outright adoration.

Jeff Bridges, in his new series “The Old Man,” is playing the kind of spy they don’t make anymore.
His Dan Chase is, even at an advanced age, a master tactician; he repeatedly bests men many years younger than he is in hand-to-hand combat. He’s also winningly persuasive, so much so that the FBI counterintelligence chief tasked with finding him (John Lithgow) can’t resist giving him a head start.
Indeed, the aptly named Chase seems perpetually one step ahead in evading pursuit, and the show is similarly ahead of us at home: We find out just what has made Chase, and what makes the chase, as we go. While part of the CIA, Chase went rogue; he’s spent the rest of his life — before and after becoming a parent and then a widower — living under assumed identities and staying just out-of-reach of an angry defense apparatus.

Warren Littlefield’s long winning streak continues: the TV executive-turned-producer just signed a new, multiyear overall deal with 20th Television and ABC Signature.
The Littlefield Company first joined Fox 21 in 2016, then entered into a joint deal between Fox 21 and 20th Television. His newest arrangement with 20th Television and ABC Signature means he will produce exclusively for the Disney-owned studios through 2026.
Besides The Handmaid’s Tale for Hulu and Fargo for FX, the Littlefield Co. is responsible for Dopesick and the upcoming FX drama The Old Man, starring Jeff Bridges and John Lithgow. It premieres June 16.
“Warren is more than just a gifted producer, he’s a giant in television, and I say that as someone who had the good fortune to start my career under him at NBC,” said 20th TV President Karey Burke in a statement.

“Warren is more than just a gifted producer, he’s a giant in television, and I say that as someone who had the good fortune to start my career under him at NBC,” said 20th TV President Karey Burke in a statement.

Jeff Bridges is back in action after a life-threatening battle with Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and Covid-19. At the Wednesday night premiere of his FX thriller “The Old Man”, the Oscar winner described the surreal experience of returning to set after a year-long hiatus due to his health struggles.
“I was sick for a year and then came back to work with all the same cast and crew, and it was like I had a bizarre dream or something,” Bridges told reporters on the red carpet at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles.
Filming for the TV adaptation of Thomas Perry‘s 2017 novel was initially shut down in March 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. After production resumed later in the fall with three episodes left to shoot, it was once again halted when Bridges was diagnosed with cancer and left to seek treatment.

I recently took a trip to the Us for a holiday and, as I tend to do when on holiday in America, I found myself flicking through the many television channels available on the hotel TV – and, as also tends to happen when having so much choice, I stopped upon the strangest shows I saw and wouldn’t you know it the majority of those were (shudder) reality television. And somehow I became hooked… I even took time to find out when these weird and wonderful shows were on TV so I could watch more. Thank god for Us television ‘s love of series marathons is all I can say!
Inspired by my new-found love of Us reality television, a love which I seem to have brought home to the UK with me, here’s my Top 5 Us Reality Shows:
