Bear Grylls’ new NBC reality show (Mondays at 9 Et) is like Fear Factor with hiking, Survivor without bathing suits, or The Amazing Race with at least 75 percent less fun. The remaining eight pairs will continue to traverse the New Zealand wilds for the next six weeks. So, what are you missing?

The Fall TV Season presentations for all the new network shows take place this week with the fourth announced today. Here's a full breakdown of which concepts have made the final list over on CBS.
The king of the networks easily remains in charge despite "Elementary" being their only fresh hit of last season's new shows. The network's line-up remains fairly stable with only a few key moves such as Thursday being expanded to include two hours of comedy programming, and "Hawaii Five-0" moving to Fridays.
Several other pilots didn't make the cut this week including the series sequel to the "Beverly Hills Cop" movies, a TV version of the comedy "Bad Teacher", the "NCIS" mobile spin-off "NCIS: Red," a procedural based on Leif G.W. Persson's literary homicide detective Everett Backstrom, the Frank Marshall-produced political thriller "The Ordained" about a priest turned lawyer trying to save his sister from assassination,...

Chicago – When you’re the #1 network on TV, it must be tempting to stay the course. However, CBS always shakes things up a bit and this year is no different. The 2013-14 schedule, announced this morning, features four new comedies (including a new comedy block in one of their most successful time slots) and one drama, along with new time slots for big hits “Person of Interest,” “Two and a Half Men,” and “Hawaii Five-0.” The five new shows feature a stunning degree of star power with lead roles taken by Robin Williams, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Margo Martindale, Tony Shalhoub, Toni Collette, Will Arnett, Tate Donovan, Allison Janney, and more. It must be nice to be #1.

The internet was in shock yesterday as reports broke saying that Colton Haynes is leaving Teen Wolf, though producers denied the report. E! adds that the show decided to move on because Haynes' team took took long to respond to an offer for Haynes to stick around for two more seasons.
It's official, NBC announced that it will air the Mockingbird Lane pilot on October 26, leading into that synergestic Halloween episode of Grimm. I'm still keeping my fingers crossed it pulls a Nightingales and does well enough to get a series order (though I hope it turns out to be a better series than Nightingales).

Well, that’s it. This years Emmy race is over and there are some familiar names amongst the winners… Modern Family once again dominates the comedy categories whilst Homeland surprises everyone and walks away with Best Drama and Best Leads in a Drama for it’s two stars. It;s nice to see Louis C.K. get an award for the excellent work he does on his “sitcom” Louie.

The results of the television awards ceremony of the year are always something to look forward to – the quality of the small screen has only been improving over the past decade or two, and it’s nice to see credit given where credit’s due.
Mad Men, Modern Family, Downton Abbey, Breaking Bad, Sherlock, and 30 Rock led this year’s nominations, and it’s Modern Family and Homeland that have come away with the most wins, taking four awards apiece.
Homeland has been one of the most talked-about dramas over the past year, and leading stars Damian Lewis (doing a Hugh Laurie, being an English actor playing an American on Us TV) and Claire Danes came away with the Leading Actor/Actress prizes in the dramatic categories.

One of my favorite Jerry Seinfeld jokes is about coming in second place in a sprint event at the Olympics. He jokes that the margin of defeat is so small, how can the competitors live with losing by so little? The sprinters start, run for 10 seconds, get close to the finish and... eh?!? Aww... they lose.
The “Eh?!? Aww” joke perfectly describes how I felt at the end of this week’s episode of The Amazing Race. Before the leg began, every Mark and Bopper fan knew that even though the team avoided elimination the previous leg, they were still significantly behind the other duos. When the leg began an approximately three-hour deficit was revealed.
However, a glimmer of light was developing for the Kentucky boys at the Fast Forward. Art and Jj and Rachel and Dave had already taken a Fast Forward and were precluded from another. Vanessa and...

After saying goodbye to Andrew and Elliot last week, there are eight teams still remaining in The Amazing Race. We haven't had a non-elimination leg yet - will we be bidding farewell to another team this time? The pairs are travelling from Paraguay to Turin in Italy this week, with Art and Jj getting to depart first. But that's not much help, because when they get to the travel agency they discover that the earliest flight arrives in Turin at 10.35am the next day. The other teams also soon get tickets for the flight, except for Bopper and Mark, who decide to go straight to the airport. When they get there, though, Art and Jj inform them that they have to go back to the travel agency. They eventually get their tickets and are relieved to be reunited with the other teams, but it's only when they're comparing tickets that...

On Sunday (March 4) night's episode of "The Amazing Race," viewers learned a couple interesting facts. We learned that the harp is the national instrument of Paraguay. Seriously, who knew that? We also discovered that if you're stringing a harp, the fastest and best way to go about the task is start at one end and work your way to the other, rather than starting from each end and working your way to the middle. We have Andrew and Elliot Weber to thank for the second lesson. The Twins learned about harp-stringing the hard way, during a key...

The Amazing Race Review, Season 20, Episode 3, “Bust Me Right in the Head with It”
Airs Sundays at 8pm (Et) on CBS
In the past few years, The Amazing Race has faced criticism from long-time fans about easy challenges that involved more luck than skill. This changed slightly last season with harder clues, but the trickiest part was usually deciphering the messages. It’s been refreshing this time around to see challenging tasks that push the teams out of their comfort zones. This week, nearly everyone struggles to complete the leg and even strong teams start falling apart. In the show’s first visit to Paraguay, the excitement builds to an extremely close finish between two athletic teams. Last week’s exit for the Clowns was predictable, but the endless series of twists and turns make this a surprising classic.

If Elliot and Andrew Weber had a redo, they would tackle The Amazing Race's Paraguay leg completely differently. After toiling at the harp-stringing Detour for hours, the twins wound up slightly ahead of Vanessa and Ralph — who slaved away themselves at the watermelon-stacking option — at the Roadblock. But the bottle-balancing task proved too difficult for Elliot, the front man of the music group Enova, to handle. "I probably have better balance than he does, especially with things on my head," Andrew, a goalkeeper for Mls' Seattle Sounders, tells TVGuide.com. "Should I have done it? Maybe, but at the time, neither of us knew [from the clue] what the task was." Find out why Elliot took the Roadblock, why they had such a hard time with the harp and more.

Brendon and Rachel are an emotionally volatile couple, and they've already scored a reality victory when Rachel won the most recent interation of "Big Brother." So it's no big surprise that they're the target of some negativity from the other teams on "The Amazing Race" (Sun., 8 p.m. Est on CBS). For one, Rachel has proven she can get emotionally rattled, which affects her focus and her gameplay. When Rachel is focused, she's a true force to be reckoned with.
So while Vanessa succeeded in rattling Rachel and Brendon so much during the pumpkin stacking competition on "The Race" that they switched to the other task, she was probably feeling pretty good about it. But in the cool and air-conditioned room where the harp stringing competition was held, Rachel was able to relax and really get into the groove. She and Brendon tore through that challenge on their way to...

Holy cow, that was a difficult leg!
This week on The Amazing Race was nothing short of brutal. Those who stayed in the contest certainly earned it and not simply by taking advantage of an early start from the previous leg. No, not finishing ninth was a major accomplishment here.
What was particularly interesting about the goal of not finishing ninth was that the teams did not realize how difficult this would be, for all of them, until they got to the Roadblock. Prior to that there was a discouraging flight followed by a very difficult Detour. At a number of points in the leg teams believed they were in a far worse situation than their competitors.
The first example of this intriguing aspect was Rachel and Dave at the Detour. After switching from Stacked to Strung and realizing the trailing teams had caught up, the pair burned their express pass.

I’m sorry; I can’t do things under pressure.
I don’t know, I’ve totally forgotten how to divide.
The above quotes are both from this week’s episode of The Amazing Race. In fact, both come from the same point in the race, at the hectic Roadblock. Why do they matter? You'd think neither would ever be uttered on The Amazing Race.
Besides the ability to read a map, the ability to do things under pressure seems like something that would be of good use when deciding to go on The Amazing Race. Apparently that’s not the case for Big Brother Rachel, though.
After not really screwing up anything at all, she broke down in tears and got mad at Brendan for not understanding this apparently obvious flaw of hers. She didn’t really make a mistake and they knew they had nothing on the line.

The Amazing Race Review, Season 20, Episode 1, “Tears of a Clown”
Airs Sundays at 8pm (Et) on CBS
One of the most intriguing aspects of The Amazing Race is the extensive game design required to keep the teams moving through the planned course. The right combination of clues, transportation, and tasks can provide great drama and an exciting finish. If the leg is created poorly, however, teams become spread out and can fail based on random events. The trick is keeping everyone close while offering them a chance to pull ahead. The 20th season begins with a well-designed leg that gives the trailing teams a shot at survival. The master stroke is placing the empanada-making contest right near the Pit Stop. This task requires skill and takes a long time to complete, so even teams that fall behind can change their position by blowing through the challenge. It also increases the...

The critical success of a season of The Amazing Race can't be determined after just one episode. Many of the teams' personalities will not come out for several legs. Similarly, future legs could be extremely dramatic or interesting, altering our opinion of the season.
So it may be too early to pass judgement, but what fun is waiting for all the facts? Let's dive right in!
The leg itself was fairly standard. There was a fun wrinkle at the Roadblock where the language of the clue fooled the teams in to having the 'wrong' person perform the skydive, but ironically it was the person actually selected for the Roadblock that ended up costing Misa and Maiya and Joey and Dan time. Not the partner duped in to skydiving.
Interestingly, it was those two teams who were last two to finish the leg. A finish that was equally as pathetic as...

Chicago – One of the reasons that CBS’s “The Amazing Race” has been as critically-acclaimed and award-winning as it has over its successful run is the balance of regular people with more typical larger-than-life reality personalities. The show’s stellar editing team is the main reason the program works and host Phil Keoghan would be right behind in close second. But in third place, I would argue that the show works because its dynamics are relatable thanks to the program’s stellar casting. There’s typically a pair of siblings, a newly-dating couple, a married couple, two friends, etc. And it’s often easy to put yourself in at least one of their shoes and say, “What would I do in this situation? Would I fight with my spouse/sister/buddy? Would I do better at that challenge? Would we totally collapse into hysterics and get eliminated?” When “The Amazing Race...

Amazing Race 20 Preview
Airs Sundays at 8pm (Et) on CBS
Premieres on February 19
After barely surviving its early days, The Amazing Race is entering its 20th season. This is a remarkable feat for what began as a low-key antidote to other reality series. The formula has been tinkered with over the years (sometimes to its detriment), but the basic structure remains the same. Eleven teams of two journey around the world and compete for one million dollars. New Zealander Phil Keoghan has hosted since the beginning, and he provides a friendly presence to explain the tasks and greet the teams. It’s an effective set-up for tense drama and great entertainment with the right cast. Each season’s success or failure may come down to chance, but interesting players is the key factor.
After stumbling with the mediocre “Unfinished Business” season last spring, The Amazing Race rebounded nicely in the fall.

Nominations for the 2011 Emmy Awards were revealed this morning, with the ceremony showing love for drama on HBO, presenter Melissa McCarthy and (yes!!!) the final season of Friday Night Lights.
We'll have plenty of reaction (seriously, no Toni Collette, Community or Sons of Anarchy?!?), analysis and opinion leading up to the Jane Lynch-hosted ceremony on September 18. First, though, a look at the nominees...

As the networks roll out their fall schedules, CBS gets a chance to spend a lot of its day milling around the free snack table while surfing for new Apps. Whatever your thoughts might be on whether or not CBS has hot women, and is or isn't a network for old people (which it A- does, and B- nevertheless largely is), the fact is that they aren't rolling out a lot of new shows. P.S. don't write letters, if you haven't heard about CBS claiming it isn't for old people (or just for old people, I suppose) and has "hot women," that's not my fault.
You could go either way with the general idea that CBS is only putting out five new shows, while the other networks seem to have more new shows than they can juggle at once. On the one hand, CBS might be resting on its...

CBS had quite a few flops last year, with the now-canceled "Chaos," "The Defenders," "$#*! My Dad Says," "Mad Love," and "Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior," turds one and all ("Medium" was also axed). And yet, it still walks out of the season as the number one network, a title it's held for 8 of the past 9 years. It's good to be the king, and when your shit is working, you don't change it up much. Sure, there are a few schedule changes and a handful of new shows (3 new dramas, two new comedies, and one midseason show). But not a whole lot of surprises with 19 returning shows (and with this scheduling announcement, "Blue Bloods," "The Good Wife," and "CSI: Miami" got the official renewals we all expected they were going to get) mostly keeping their old timeslots.
(Unlike our earlier Upfronts columns this week, there are no clips here because CBS still hasn't released clips.

Chicago – What do you do when your iron grip on success is getting weaker? Shake things up. That’s what CBS is doing this Fall by shuffling their line-up more significantly than any other network and adding five new series, which are detailed below.
CSI: Crime Scene Investigation

The new dramas include J.J. Abrams’ “Person of Interest,” “Unforgettable,” and “A Gifted Man,” and the new comedies are called “2 Broke Girls” & “How to Be a Gentleman.”
In major schedule changes, “CSI” will move to Wednesdays, “The Good Wife” airs on Sundays, and “Rules of Engagement” has been shuffled off to Saturdays of all places.
19 shows return including “NCIS,” “NCIS: Los Angeles,” “Criminal Minds,” “CSI,” “CSI: Miami,” “CSI: NY,” “The Mentalist,” “Blue Bloods,” “Rules of Engagement,” “48 Hours Mystery,” “The Good Wife,” “60 Minutes,” “The Big Bang Theory,” “Mike & Molly,” “Survivor,” “How I Met Your Mother,” “Two and a Half Men,...

CBS announced its 2011-2012 primetime fall schedule today. The most anticipated show for me is J.J. Abrams' Person of Interest starring Jim Caviezel, Michael Emmerson and Taraji P. Henson. I am also a huge fan of Kat Dennings, so it will be neat to see how 2 Broke Girls turns out. There are a total of three new dramas, two new comedies, and 19 returning series.
Here is the press release:
CBS announced today its new 2011-2012 primetime schedule, ordering five new series and making key time-period moves for CSI and The Good Wife to strengthen its already top-rated primetime lineup. CBS will, once again, finish the season as America's most watched network, marking the eighth time it has done so in the last nine years.

Two and a Half Men is staying put and CSI is getting the boot.
CBS unveiled its fall scheduled keeping Big Bang Theory on Thursdays and shifts veteran CSI from its longtime Thursday night anchor slot.
The network announced several new drams. J.J. Abrams’ Person of Interest stars Jim Caviezel and Michael Emerson as an ex-cia agent and a billionaire who team to stop crimes. Interest gets to take over the coveted CSI spot on Thursdays. CBS also shifted The Good Wife to Sundays. “To move CSI out of that time period you need big guns and we do,” says CBS entertainment president Nina Tassler.

Q: On last week’s episode of The Amazing Race, both Sam and Dan’s groin areas were pixelated during their mudflats volleyball game in Tallinn, Estonia – but no one else was. Upon arrival at the mudflats volleyball court, Sam, after a thorough survey of their male competitors, remarked how gorgeous and good-looking they all were in their black trunks. Could it be a case of uncontrolled standing ovation or just attire malfunction? – Anonymous
Sam (left) and Dan McMillen
A: What are you suggesting – that they both had uncontrolled standing ovations? That makes me wonder what’s in the water back in Liberty, Missouri.
But it’s true: plenty of viewers were perplexed by the curious case of the pixilation of the underwear of Amazing Race’s hot gay brothers.

Each year, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), releases a report about what we at AfterElton cover every day – Lgbt representation on television. But where we tend to try and take a qualitative look at what’s beaming into our living rooms every day, GLAAD’s annual report takes more of a quantitative approach.
Looking at TV numerically makes sense for an annual report – you can’t possibly deal with the nuances of each episode or the development of a character like we do when we start typing each day. But it also reminds me of what my college statistics professor said on the first day: Numbers can lie.
GLAAD separates cable and broadcast networks into different categories for their report, and that’s fairly significant. The report only looks at original programming for primetime hours, and excludes any syndicated programming. This means that while ABC is graded on producing 1,146.5 hours of television,...

It's The Best.Gay.Week.Ever! But In Designer Clothes!
Oh, the irony of having me write a fashion-themed Bgwe! Why so ironic? How about because it's 5 Pm and I'm currently wearing Target slippers, Target lounge pants and a ratty sweathshirt. Did I mention these are my good clothes?
Not fair! I actually shower every single day! Mostly...
Why the sudden interest in fashion? Well, there was Fashion Week having taken place last week in New York and the Oscars in L.A. on Sunday, but I was really inspired by last week's episode of Ugly Betty which ended with Betty finally "getting" that fashion isn't just about expensive clothes but is actually "art" and about taking what's on the inside emotionally, spiritually, etc. and putting it on the outside.
I guess she's feeling wing-y on the inside?
I found that an interesting way to look at fashion and thusly...

Although Ari Folman's "Waltz With Bashir" did not make the shortlist of 15 films under consideration for the best documentary Oscar, it is among the nominees for the DGA's doc award, announced Friday.
"Waltz" will compete with Gonzalo Arijon's "Stranded: I've Come From a Plane that Crashed on the Mountains," in which survivors of a 1972 Andes plane crash tell their story; Elizabeth Farnsworth and Patricio Lanfranco's "The Judge and the General," a look back at the investigation into the regime of Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet; Peter Gilbert & Stevie James' "At the Death House Door," an examination of the wrongful conviction of a Texas man executed for murder; and James Marsh's "Man on Wire," a study of tight-rope walker Philippe Petit.
All the nominees are first-time DGA nominees, with the exception of Gilbert (who won the DGA's doc award in 1998 for "Vietnam: Long Time Coming" and was...

After winning the popular reality show "The Amazing Race" on December 7, sister and brother team, Starr and Nick Spangler, shared their excitement to be the champion of the CBS' show season thirteen. On December 8, Starr and Nick spoke to Reality TV World about winning the race as well as their experience during the around-the-world competition.
As stated by Nick, he was surprised to have won the race because at that time he thought that their rival, Ken and Tina, probably had a chance to beat them on the last challenge. "It was unbelievable. I can't really put it into words except. Honestly, I never stopped doubting that maybe Ken and Tina had somehow beat us," said Nick.
Contrary to her brother, Starr believed that her team would be the winner because she knew that her team was ahead of their rival. She said, "See, I knew in the cab as...

Mother and son Toni and Dallas have to end their journey in the 13th season of "The Amazing Race" after making a fatal error of accidentally leaving their passport and and money in a taxi. "I feel closer to my son than I ever have," Toni said upon elimination. "I have the deepest respect and pride for the man that he's grown up to be. This has been the best experience of my life and I wouldn't change a thing that we did, not one."
Three teams are left in the final leg of the race, they are Frat Boys Andrew and Dan, separated couple Ken and Tina as well as siblings Nick and Starr. From Moscow, Russia, they are going to fly back home to Portland, Oregon before a pair crosses the finish line and win the $1,000,000 prize.

I’m usually out on Sunday nights, so I haven’t gotten a chance to catch this season of The Amazing Race. Fortunately, I was home last night, so I got to see one of the funniest reality show moments in recent memory. And even more fortunately, CBS.com has the clip on its site so that you can see it, too. Here’s the set up: the teams are in Russia, and must complete one of two tasks. One of those tasks is to learn how to march like the Russian army. Dan and Andrew, the bumbling frat boy team who managed to lose their shoes last week, chose this task—only to discover that Dan is the least coordinated person in the entire world. His moves are epic:...
