Morrissey’s controversial endorsement of British far-right political party For Britain has led at least one record store to ban his music. Spillers, which bills itself as “the oldest record shop in the world,” in Cardiff, Wales has announced it can no longer support the former Smiths’ frontman, Wales Online reports.
“I’m saddened but ultimately not surprised that Spillers is unable to stock Morrissey’s releases any longer,” Spillers owner Ashli Todd told Wales Online. “I only wished I’d done it sooner.”

Morrissey appeared on The Tonight Show to perform his recent cover of Jobriath’s 1973 glam-rock tune “Morning Starship.” The suit-clad singer was joined by a live band as he took on the anthemic song with his classic croon, bringing in more of an jangly electric vibe than the acoustic-led original.
The musician’s new album, California Sun, is a collection of Sixties and Seventies protest covers, including tracks by Joni Mitchell, Dionne Warwick and Bob Dylan. The album, Morrissey’s follow up to his 2017 album Low In High School, drops...

Morrissey and Grizzly Bear’s Ed Droste have teamed for a rendition of Jobriath’s “Morning Starship.” The song appears on Morrissey’s covers album, California Son, which features his takes on Sixties and Seventies tracks. The album is the follow-up to 2017’s Low in High School.
Their cover of “Morning Starship,” stays fairly faithful to the glam rocker’s 1973 original, with added ethereal harmonized touches where Morrissey and Droste’s voices pleasingly intermingle, some dramatic vocal flourishes and a bit of a psychedelic sway that buoy Morrissey’s hallmark baritone.

Morrissey, who will release an album of classic 1960s and ’70s covers on May 24, has booked his first Broadway engagement May 2-11 at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre.
The announcement of the gig describes it as an “intimate yet exciting exploration of Morrissey’s expansive career.” On the upcoming album, California Son, the pop singer and former Smiths frontman delivers versions of Joni Mitchell, Dionne Warwick and Bob Dylan as well as lesser-known artists like Jobraith and Phil Ochs. Green Day’s Billy Joe Armstrong, Grizzly Bear’s Ed Droste and Young the Giant’s Sameer Gadhia appear on the album as collaborators.
Last year, Morrissey released a well-received cover of the Pretenders’ “Back on the Chain Gang.”

Morrissey unveiled a fittingly dramatic rendition of Roy Orbison’s 1964 track, “It’s Over.” The song will appear on the musician’s upcoming covers album, California Son, out May 24th.
Morrissey’s arrangement is fairly faithful to the original, blending orchestral elements with marching drums and dreamy guitars, though he still injects the track with his own distinct style of grandeur while guest singer LP lends the track an operatic edge. Most striking is Morrissey’s vocal performance, his baritone quivering in that quintessential Orbison way as he sings, “But oh what will you do,...

Florence and the Machine pay tribute to Fleetwood Mac, a crucial influence, with a stripped-down cover of “Silver Springs” that was recorded during a special radio session for The Spectrum at the SiriusXM Studios.

Though the film was released nearly five years ago, the lingering romantic essence of Derek Cianfrance’s “Blue Valentine” remains. Named after a Tom Waits album and boasting a soundtrack by Grizzly Bear, the picture is a realist tale of what happens when you fall in and out of love, featuring terrific performances from Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams. Read More: Review: 'Blue Valentine' Delivers With A Prickly, Raw, Devastating Punch In this short but apt video from Between Frames, we are given insight to Cianfrance’s use of red and blue throughout the film. Blue may be an obvious choice, but seems less so when you see the surreptitious uses here and there depicting the drifting moods of the characters. The use of red, particularly with respect to children, is abundant and seems to denote happier or angrier moments. After watching this essay, you’ll certainly want to revisit the 2010 drama.

It appears Taylor Swift now has bad blood with Grizzly Bear frontman Edward Droste. Droste took to Twitter on Sunday to vent his frustrations with the “Blank Space” pop singer. He first posted a report about her entitled “Mean Girl Taylor’s Friendship Rules!” that compared Swift to “Mean Girls” antagonist Regina George. He captioned the tweet: “Obsessed that people are catching on.” The star’s fandom — appropriately known as the Swifties — leaped to her defense, while other Twitter users voiced support for the indie bandmember. As a kid, she says she even created a cheesy AOL account specifically so she could email their drummer. Fast forward a few years, and last night she finally got the chance to fangirl in person while performing with them at a benefit concert thrown by her "besties" Haim. She also gave a killer performance of "Your Love Is My Drug" with the sisters, in case your forgot what a total gem that song is.Bonus! Jenny Lewis showed up to debut an awesome new song. And Grizzly Bear's Ed Droste joined Haim for a Beach Boys cover.

It seems like every website in the Western hemisphere and a lot besides are regurgitating Netflix’s new press release about their original movie Pee-Wee’s Big Holiday. The Mad Decent commander-in-chief has just released a new track that sees him going down the indie route. Titled “Long Way Home,” this low-key song from Diplo is a collaboration between the celebrated producer, Grizzly Bear’s Ed Droste and Vampire Weekend’s Rostam Batmanglij.
A far departure from what we’re used to hearing with not only his solo efforts, but from Jack Ü and Major Lazer as well, the track is a soothing and relaxed song that shows us Diplo isn’t confined to just a single genre, and that when he wants to, he can distance himself from all the twerking, trap, moombahton and everything else he’s known for.
If some of the song sounds familiar, it’s because it’s mostly a re-imagining of Ty Dolla $ign’s “Stand For.” It works well, though, and should prove to be a hit with both indie and mainstream audiences.

The Champs Elysees Film Festival's in partnership with U.S. in Progress awarded the U.S. in Progress Prize to "Creative Control" Director and the film's star, Benjamin Dickinson, and Producers Craig Shilowich, Melody Roscher, Zachary Mortensen and Mark de Pace. Dickenson's first feature film "First Winter" premiered at the 2012 Tribeca Film Festival.
"Creative Control", a dark sci-fi comedy is the near-future story of four Brooklynites whose tech-obsessed lifestyles get the better of them. Anxious, ambitious ad executive starts a chain reaction of destruction when he becomes obsessed with his best friend's free-spirited girlfriend while working on a campaign for a new generation of Augmented Reality Glasses. The life-like avatar he creates of her becomes too life-like as the blurred boundary between reality and fantasy spreads into an out-of-control space where everyone's public, private and imaginary lives implode.
Benjamin Dickenson grew up in Wheaton, Illinois and moved to New York in 1999 to attend Nyu's undergraduate film program. After graduation he and some friends from school started Waverly Films in a warehouse in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Benjamin started directing music videos for Dfa record artists such as LCD Soundsystem, The Rapture and the Juan Maclean. He has since made videos for Q-Tip and Reggie Watts, the "disinformationist" who c is currently appearing on the IFC television series "Comedy Bang! Bang" which began airing on June 8, 2012 and was renewed for a third season which will premiere in 2014. He has also directed commercials for Google, The Ford Motor Corporation, BMW, MTV and Guitar Hero.
Producer Marc de Pace is a partner at Ghost Robot, another Bushwick production company. In 2011 Mark produced Benjamin's "First Winter"released by Film Movement. He exec produced Michael Cera's short film "Brazzaville Teen-Ager" and Joey Garfield's feature film "A Love Letter for You". HIs producing credits also include music videos for Bjork, The Rapture and Grizzly Bear and ads for Google, Toshiba and At&T.
U.S. in Progress Paris took place during the third edition of the Champs Elysées Film Festival in Paris, on June 11-12 2014. The program presented 4 U.S. indie films in post-production to European sales agents, distributors and festival programmers in order to achieve completion and to foster the circulation and distribution of American indie films in Europe. The event has doubled the amount of submissions this year and is quickly achieving a winning track record.
The trajectories of the directing/ writing/ producing/ acting teams of the other three contenders are all trending distinctively upward:
Writer/director Matthew Lessner and producer David Henry Gerson presented "Automatic at Sea". Their short film "Chapel Perilous" previously won the 2014 Audience Award at Sundance. Matthew's previous feature "The Woods", distributed by Film Movement, premiered in the New Frontier Program at the Sundance Film Festival in 2011 and was shortlisted for Independent Spirit and Gotham Awards. The San Francisco Film Society has awarded him two grants for his upcoming feature "Terror Tuesday". Producer David Henry Gerson also starred and to my eye and in my opinion is one of the few mature (adult vs. boy-type) male leads in this new generation of actors. Manly, threatening and aloof in his role, in life he is also smart (a graduate of Colombia University with a bachelor's degree in English Literature and currently attending the American Film Institute) and engaged, as shown in the shorts he wrote and directed "Broken Badge" about a NYPD officer and American Standard about a veteran returning home from Afghanistan to his illegal immigrant girlfriend.
"Eugenia and John" directed by Hossein Keshavarz whose film "Dog Sweat" was released by Indiepix to critical acclaim in 2011 and which the New York Times called "polished; the young actors warmly believable" and NPR called "astonishingly gutsy" screened his second film, "Eugenia and John", produced by Mryam Azadi, Chad Burris and Amy Durning, stars Wesley Tunison and Venecia Troncoso who has the distinction of having starred in the Sundance hit, "Mosquita y Mari".
"Winning Dad" was written, directed and produced by Arthur Allen with producers Julia Bruk and Case Barden. This Lgbt romance is the debut feature of a young man whose career path after graduating St. John's College in Maryland, is as entertaining as his film. After supporting himself for several years in the Seattle Theater Community (and washing windows at the Space Needle), in 2008 he joined the United States Merchant Marines where he wrote "winning Dad" aboard the Usns Gilliland. On leaving, he was recruited by the Washington United for Marriage Coalition as part of its Speaker's Bureau to campaign for marriage equality in Washington State. In 2012 he began working for an Arabic translation company and represented the United States at the second Baghdad International Translation conference in Baghdad, Iraq.
If these four films are not quality enough to show the success of U.S. in Progress, the paths of the other films they have shown over the three years included Sundance film 2013's winning film "Ping Pong Summer" directed by Michael Tully and starring Susan Sarandon, Amy Sedaris, John Hannah, Judah Friedlander, and Lea Thompson was picked up for domestic distribution by Millennium and Gravitas and is currently in release theatrically in U.S. The premium international sales agent, Films Boutique, has sold it to France, Germany and Russia.
The former U.S. in Progress films, "Ping Pong Summer", "Sun Belt Express", Summer of Blood" by Onur Tukel whose film "Richard's Wedding" also showed in U.S. in Progress, are also showing at the Champs-Elysees Film Festival, the only film festival in Paris. This year Ceff is also hosting The Paris Coproduction Village with 12 feature films in development from Italy, U.S., Israel, The Philippines, Romania, Sri Lanka and U.S., Germany, Chile and Argentina, Thailand, Turkey, Italy and Canada, and Australia. It is also hosting the four-month Paris residents of the Cannes Film Festival's Cinefondation, a dozen young directors whose selection is based on the quality of their shorts or first feature film and on the merits of their project currenlty in development their motivation.
The Champs Elysees is alive with the energy infused by the top level of fresh new talent, meeting for cocktails if not over dinner and lunch every evening in the terrace of Publicis at the top the the Champs Elysees, overlooking the Arc de Triumph. ...
The story of Hercules the Human Bear, the grizzly bear who gained TV and movie fame in the '80s, is going to be revealed in a new documentary on Channel 5.
Purchased from a Scottish zoo in 1976 for £50 by Andy and Maggie Robin, Hercules went on to become a star, appearing in adverts for Kleenex and Hofmeister Beer and, most famously, Roger Moore's Bond film Octopussy.
The documentary will trace "the unique relationship that Andy, Maggie and Hercules forged during their 25 years together", and feature interviews with his owners.
Featuring archive footage of Hercules wrestling Andy and his many TV appearances, the film will conclude with the unveiling of a life-sized statue of the bear in the Outer Hebrides.
"For 25 years I lived with a bear. That teddy bear we all had as a child became my everyday reality," said Maggie Robin.

A version of this story first appeared in the Jan. 31 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine. Were it not for indie bands Bon Iver and Grizzly Bear, we might not have Lorde (nee Ella Yelich-o'Connor), the 17-year-old phenom whose harmony-mashing "Royals" topped the Billboard Hot 100 charts for nine weeks in 2013 and garnered a half-million plays on U.S. radio. Her hometown of Auckland "often gets skipped" on a tour, which made her first two shows -- at age 15 -- extra special. On becoming well-known:
"When I meet people whose music I really inspire, and they may be a little bit famous, I still get the little, 'Holy crap! This person wants to talk to me.' And I think when you stop having that feeling, and you’re like 'Oh, of course they do,' then maybe you’re not who you were anymore."

"Mutability is no longer about the physical body's sad corruption, nor about the freshness of the New Thing. Enter Tao, exit Reason. To live in this flux, Zen demands mu, "unasking the question"—for the question invariably asks to preserve the unpreservable, in language of the reified present. What shall we call our culture of coping in this tide of historical samsara? Let us call it: mutopia." —István Csicsery-Rónay

Shock Till You Drop reports that the people behind Friday the 13th are reportedly thinking about making the next horror installment a found footage movie. Producers are currently looking for new pitches that will fit into the found footage format.
These movies have never been expensive, and now they’re talking about making them even cheaper visa vie production and quality. At this point then, they are likely to attach a camera to the back of a Grizzly Bear and hope for the best when it sneaks up on some unsuspecting campers. Horror movies!
Fyi: The next film will be the 13th installment of the series. So do something with that you fine folks.

The early reaction to Katy Perry's "Roar" was more or less, "Hey, that sure sounds like a Sara Bareilles song called 'Brave.'" Here is a comparison of the two songs, adjusted slightly for Bpm; the piano similarities are pretty hard to ignore, even if the chord progression is slightly different. Anyway, Bareilles immediately tweeted a classy response to the outcry ("All Love, everybody. All love."), and for what it's worth, Perry tweeted her love of "Brave" all the way back in May. It's also worth pointing out that "Roar" sounds like Robbie Williams's "Something Beautiful," Grizzly Bear's "Two Weeks" (for the first eight notes, at least), and about half the pop songs currently on the radio. Plus, it cribbed lyrics from "Firework." There is nothing new under Katy Perry's sun! (Which is exactly what keeps her career going.)...

As if "Get Lucky" wasn't already funky enough, Daft Punk has unveiled a new 10-minute remix of their smash summer hit. The release arrives following the duo's hints that they would remix every track on "Random Access Memories."
The French robots decided to retouch Pharrell Williams' vocals along the way, with the singer's portions mostly synthesized now. The new version will be included on a vinyl release of the single, due July 16.
To some degree, Daft Punk was scooped on their own remix. Darkside, a collaborative project between producer Nicolas Jaar (who has previously updated songs by Nina Simone, Grizzly Bear and Brian Eno) and musician Dave Harrington, recently issued a remix of the entirety of "Memories."
The radio version of "Get Lucky" currently sits at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, providing Daft Punk with their first hit to crack the top 50. "Lucky" is being hailed as one of...

Ah, Lgbt Pride – that sun-dappled, magical month when dance clubs grow wheels and rove about the city dropping go-go boys like dandruff, Lgbt-aligned politicians become local heroes, and rainbows make more touchdowns than Jerry Rice. (Yes, I had to look that up.)
As we take to the streets to celebrate the diversity, strength and impressive midriffs of our community, I wanted to take a moment to share some of the Lgbt entertainment that makes me proud to be gay. You know – the kind of show or artist or movie where, when it’s brought up in casual mixed conversation, you can’t Wait to tell everyone that there’s a gay person behind it.
It’s an odd list, and it’s probably one that no one other than me would come up with. But that’s what makes each of us a uniquely beautiful snowflake, right? I’d love to hear what talented artists,...

Sarah Jaffe is that uber cool, ultra-talented chick who doesn't seem to know how uber cool and ultra-talented she is.
In between tweeting random spurts of dry comedic genius and playing tunes from her latest album "The Body Wins" on tour with Why?, Jaffe donates her hauntingly emotive vocals to Disney-Pixar's "The Blue Umbrella" -- the animated short making its rounds on the film festival circuit and preceding "Monsters University" in theaters.
"The Blue Umbrella" director, Saschka Unseld, says Jaffe's music, in a way, inspired the short itself. Unseld came across the 27-year-old artist quite by accident when she opened for another performer in San Francisco. The animator says he was an instant fan. "I was listening to her music a lot when I was walking through the city," says Unsfeld of Jaffe. "And at one point I saw all these faces in city buildings and objects." He says his...

A&E has cancelled the long-running reality show Intervention. That puts the end to a pretty remarkable run that helped 156 people turn sober and stay sober.
Mrs. Frederic has found a new job, C.C.H. Pounder is taking a role for a multi-episode arc on Sons of Anarchy, according to EW.

In a rather surprising development, Amazon plans to start selling fanfic. Really. The online retailer will let fanfic writers sell their Gossip Girl, Pretty Little Liars or Vampire Diaries-inspired stories and keep a portion of the sale. All three series are based on books brought to TV by Alloy Entertainment and Amazon says its working to get more properties into the mix. Now, anyone knows if they’ve banned crossovers? It would be fun to see how “A” and Gossip Girl would react to each other.
Andy Roddick will join Fox Sports Live, Fox Sports’ equivalent of SportsCenter, as a co-host.
Why aren’t there more hosting gigs that include moments of shirtlessness?
It’s taken nearly a year, but TLC has picked up the Bukudroos-produced celebrity genealogy show Who Do You Think You Are?. The new season will include episodes focusing on Zooey Deschanel, Chris O’Donnell and Christina Applegate.

Austin, Texas -- The guys in Vampire Weekend changed how they wrote songs, how they record and what an album of theirs even looks like – the cover for "Modern Vampires of the City" is not another artsy old Polaroid, but a 1966 black-and-white photo of a smoggy New York skyline.
None of which will change some minds.
"There's certainly going to be people who listen to this album and say, `Wow, more of the same from Vampire Weekend. I knew I hated these ... college boys,'" frontman Ezra Koenig said.
Those ranks are thinning. Blowing off Vampire Weekend as smirking, preppy Ivy Leaguers too quaint and precious for their own good is a position becoming tougher to defend. Tables are turning. Now it's their eye-rolling critics who risk not being taken seriously.
"Modern Vampires of the City," the New York quartet's third album and the follow-up to the 2010 smash "Contra, is its best to date.

The xx broke into the indie music scene in 2009 with their mesmerizing, whispery self-titled album -- and every hipster from Brentwood to Brooklyn embraced their emotional lyrics and addictive sound.
Bandmates Romy Madley Croft and Oliver Sim started making music together at age 15, but they've known each other since they were 3 years old. Hailing from south London, Croft and Sim studied at the Elliott School, the same institution that claims Hot Chip, Burial and Four Tet among its alumni talent.
But the xx's path wasn't fated: Croft admitted in an interview with The Huffington Post that she never had the intention of becoming a musician. She took up the drums to get out of class, she picked up a guitar after not being too great at the drums, and she started singing just so she could learn the guitar a little better. Bandmate Jamie Smith joined the group later, rounding out the trio.
