Oscar-winning Chilean director Sebastián Lelio has wrapped production on the newly announced musical film “The Wave,” inspired by the mass protests and university rallies that took place during Chile’s so-called “feminist May” movement in 2018.
The film — starring newcomers Daniela López, Avril Aurora, Lola Bravo and Paulina Cortés — centers on Julia, a dedicated music student who gets involved in the growing feminist movement on her university campus — a group effort where women step up to bring attention to the widespread harassment and abuse suffered by many of their peers. Amid the excitement of protest marches, she joins her friends in dancing and singing, revisiting her own experiences of mistreatment. But as she gathers the courage to share her story, she unexpectedly becomes a central figure in the movement. It’s a role she didn’t foresee, but one which forces her to address her identity as a survivor in a...

Oscar-winning filmmaker Sebastián Lelio has wrapped production on musical film The Wave (La Ola) inspired by the wave of feminist civil disobedience that swept Chile in the spring of 2018.
The mass protests and university rallies, sparked by a collective desire to bring attention to widespread harassment and abuse against women in Chile, came to be known as the “Feminist May”.
The movement was seen as a turning point for Chilean consciousness around women’s rights, reverberated across the world.
The movie’s original musical compositions have been created collaboratively by 17 female Chilean musicians including Ana Tijoux, Camila Moreno and Javiera Parra, as well as the film’s award-winning composer Matthew Herbert, whose credits include Lelio’s The Wonder, A Fantastic Woman, Gloria Bell and Disobedience.

“Everyone struggles to find a version of themselves that they like,” so says Jane, as played by Gillian Jacobs, in the new, spellbinding exquisite-corpse film “The Seven Faces of Jane.” She’s talking to a young teenage girl who’s run away on her quinceañera, but she’s talking to herself too.
Jane has something of an identity crisis, or rather, one that’s been created for her. A single mother with time to spare while her daughter is away at camp, Jane sets off on an adventure, or several of them, actually. What follows are seven different stories by different directors, none of whom know what the others are doing.
This form is known as an “exquisite corpse,” as is defined at the start of the film, which functions almost like a game of Telephone. The directors in question, curated by Roman Coppola, are Jacobs herself, Gia Coppola, Boma Iluma,...

Gravitas Ventures has acquired North American distribution rights to “The Seven Faces of Jane.” The experimental and experiential road film stars Gillian Jacobs, Anthony Skordi, Chido Nwokocha, Sybil Azur, Emmanuela Postacchini, Daniela Hernandez, Joel McHale, Caroline Ducrocq, Breeda Wool, Soledad St. Hilaire and Joni Reiss.
The film had an interesting origin and is the product of multiple directors. It was made by a group of filmmakers which includes Jacobs, Gia Coppola, Boma Iluma, Ryan Heffington, Xan Cassavetes, Julian J. Acosta, Ken Jeong, and Alex Takacs. Dn has featured the work of Spanish filmmaker Victor Claramunt on our pages a number of times now. We’ve always been struck by his use of vibrant colour and distinct aesthetics as a means of portraying the emotive nature of the soul. His latest short L’Amour continues that trend, this time through an experimental dance short shot in El Palau de Les Arts, a beautiful theater in Spain which hosts opera performances and boasts an incredible architectural design. The short film is a celebration of empowerment, desire and diversity and features an all-female cast of dancers who convey that feeling of freedom with a joyous buoyancy. Dn is proud to premiere L’Amour online in conjunction with a conversation with Claramunt where we discussed his zestful approach to filmmaking, the looseness of his choreography, and the liberation of not using storyboards.
L’Amour, as a piece, carries a real sense of vibrancy and zest.

“You have to put it in the script. If you put in the script – it will happen.”
This is Geena Davis’ sage advice to filmmakers when crafting stories aiming to incorporate inclusive storylines and characters.
“Nobody is going to second guess if it says the scene takes place at, say, ‘a police station which is 40 women,’ or if there’s a scene where ‘a crowd gathers, which is half female,’” continues the Oscar-winning actor and founder of the eponymous Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media.
“Specify what it is. You have to write in the script.”
That advice came to fruition in “The Seven Faces of Jane,” a surrealistic anthology film that held its world premiere at Geena Davis’ Bentonville Film Festival’s eighth edition last night in the quaint Arkansas city, home to Walmart’s global headquarters. The fest, founded and chaired by Davis, runs in-person through June...

In Episode 7 of “Euphoria” Season 2, titled “The Theater and its Double” (a canny nod to Antonin Artaud’s theory concerning the relationship between performers and their audience), viewers were finally treated to Lexi’s (Maude Apatow) autobiographical magnum opus. “Our Life,” a stage production seemingly produced with the budget of a Tony-winning musical, was a fanciful retelling of her adolescence, including characters based on her sister, Cassie (Sydney Sweeney), and best friend, Rue (Zendaya). But like any great theatrical impresario, she saved the best for last.
Lexi treated her high school crowd to a full-blown musical number set in an all-male gym, in which Ethan (Austin Abrams) — embodying a full-bro version of East Highland’s resident tortured jock, Nate (Jacob Elordi) — performs a full-out sexual rock ballet to Bonnie Tyler’s iconic “Holding Out for a Hero.” The production came complete with a hunky male ensemble, lots of well-placed squirting water bottles,...

Florence and the Machine will release a new LP, Dance Fever, on May 13 via Republic Records. The band has shared the album’s third single, “My Love,” along with an ornate music video directed by Autumn de Wilde and choreographed by Ryan Heffington.
Dance Fever — produced by Florence Welch, Jack Antonoff, and Dave Bayley of Glass Animals — was recorded in London over the course of the pandemic. The songs evoke what Welch “missed most during lockdown—clubs, dancing at festivals, being in the whirl of movement, and togetherness,” according to a release.

Florence and the Machine deliver a furious knockout blow on their new song, “Heaven Is Here.”
The heavily percussive track rides the momentum of a hand clap current, punctuated by big hits of drums, piano, and acoustic guitar. Florence Welch’s vocals are equally punchy, but also balanced with some big, drawn-out harmonies. There’s a defiant, outlaw energy to the lyrics, especially as Welch sings, “And I ride in my red dress/And time stretchеs endless/With my gun in my hand/You know I always get my man.

Sunday night’s episode of “Euphoria,” in which Lexi’s school play sent shock waves through both the auditorium on screen and the series’ fan base at home, was filled with stunning moments and set pieces, but none was as shocking or gleefully entertaining as the musical number at the story’s climax. Set to the ‘80s pop staple “Holding Out for a Hero,” it’s a vigorously homoerotic extravaganza in which a fictionalized surrogate for the show’s deeply conflicted Nate romps among thrusting, grinding, and glistening men in skimpy attire.
Choreographer Ryan Heffington, who spoke to IndieWire following the episode’s premiere, remembered that the description of the scene in the original script was fairly brief. “There was a lot of massaging and body oil,” Heffington said with a laugh, adding that it was nevertheless “thrilling to read because it was clear that I’d finally get to...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not seen “Euphoria” Season 2, Episode 7, “The Theater and Its Double.”
When Ryan Heffington set out to choreograph the dance number in the penultimate episode of “Euphoria” Season 2, he took a cue from the song it’s set to, Bonnie Tyler’s “Holding Out for a Hero.”
“I knew it was — and had to be — larger than life,” Heffington tells Variety of the dance, which takes place during Lexi’s (Maude Apatow) play and features over a dozen men in shiny gold football pants gyrating against work out equipment — and each other — in the locker room. Ethan (Austin Abrams) stars in the dance as a character mirroring Nate (Jacob Elordi), whose sexuality (and homophobia) has been bottling underneath the surface during the past two seasons.

In Episode 7 of the show’s second season, entitled “The Theater and Its Double,” viewers are given a glimpse into Lexi’s complex relationship with the young women around her, her father, her mother and herself.

In “Tick, Tick, …Boom!” the song “Therapy” is performed by Jonathan Larson, played by Andrew Garfield and Karessa played by Vanessa Hudgens. For “Tick, Tick… Boom!” choreographer Ryan Heffington, coming up with the steps for “No More” — the musical’s duet between Jonathan (Andrew Garfield) and Michael (Robin de Jesús) — was a collaborative process.

Where did that come from, Andrew Garfield?
Mr. Garfield stars in Tick, Tick... Boom! for Netflix, and he stuns.
Lin-Manuel Miranda directs the feature, based on the musical of the same name by the late Jonathan Larson.
Tick, Tick... Boom! never made it to Broadway, performing only off-broadway.
Known for Rent, Larson's work has seen plenty of acclaim.
Miranda's new take on Tick, Tick... Boom! turns Larson's simple stage musical into a sweeping and engaging 115 minutes.
Everything was beautiful; from the sets, the performances, and even the cheesy cameos of literally every Broadway star living,
The choreography used was nothing to laugh at, and for Garfield, who has never done a musical before, could not have been easy.
But he, along with the rest of the cast, performed some incredible dances and musical numbers.
Garfield's singing voice also surprised, as he's never shown off his vocal chops until this film.

Netflix released the trailer, key art and the first single from the film’s official soundtrack entitled “30/90” for tick, tick…Boom!, the Lin-Manuel Miranda-directed film adaptation of Jonathan Larson’s autobiographical pre-Rent musical.
Starring Andrew Garfield as Larson, Netflix’s tick, tick…Boom! will premiere in theaters on November 12, 2021 and will hit streaming a week later on November 19th.
Garfield plays Jon, a young theater composer who’s waiting tables at a New York City diner in 1990 while writing what he hopes will be the next great American musical. As described by Netflix: Days before he’s due to showcase his work in a make-or-break performance, Jon is feeling the pressure from everywhere: from his girlfriend Susan (Alexandra Shipp), who dreams of an artistic life beyond New York City; from his friend Michael (Robin de Jesús), who has moved on from his dream to a life of financial security.

I’ve been doing something creative every day, well, five days a week. It was a commitment I made a couple weeks ago.
While this is happening, while I’m (thankfully) at home, while the world is getting sick, and I’m trying to cope with how scary it is, I decided it’d be good for me. Something creative every day.
But for me, creativity can be hard when I’m alone. I’m less used to it. Movies and shows and things like that are not made by one person. They’re collaborative. On a set, in an edit bay, getting and giving notes, having conversations. I like making things together with other people.

A trio of stars has been added to the cast of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Netflix film “Tick, Tick… Boom!”
Broadway vet Joshua Henry, Judith Light, and Emmy winner Bradley Whitford are all on board for the 1990-set movie musical. They join the previously-announced Andrew Garfield, Alexandra Shipp, Tony nominee Robin de Jesus and Vanessa Hudgens.
Henry, a three-time Tony nominee best known for his role in the 2010 musical “The Scottsboro Boys” and the Apple drama “See,” has booked the role of Roger. Light will play Rosa Stevens, and Whitford has landed the part of Stephen Sondheim — presumably the real-life Broadway kingpin in this tale of an aspiring theater composer.
“Tick, Tick… Boom!” marks Miranda’s feature directorial debut. Steven Levenson (“Dear Evan Hansen”) is adapting the screenplay based on the original stage show from late “Rent” creator Jonathan Larson. Miranda is also producing, along with Brian Grazer, Ron Howard and Julie Oh of Imagine Entertainment.

Paul McCartney and Emma Stone get surreal for a good cause in the short film inspired by McCartney’s new anti-bullying song “Who Cares,” which held its premiere Sunday night at Beverly Hills’ Fine Arts Theater.
In the short directed by Brantley Guitierrez (a longtime McCartney tour photographer) and choreographer Ryan Heffington, the music legend and the A-lister romp around in a black-and-white dance number with mime-like dancers and harlequins on hand-drawn minimalist sets. The film is designed to kick off the anti-bullying social media campaign dubbed “#WhoCaresIDo” backed by numerous non-profit orgs, including Creative Visions Foundation, Artemis Rising and Blue Chip Foundation.
“Who Cares” will drop Monday on Apple Music as an exclusive for 24 hours. After that the hope is that the video and its earnest message, wrapped up in bizarro imagery, will go viral on social media platforms. “Who Cares” preaches that people — no less a cultural giant than Sir Paul himself!

To achieve success (no matter your profession), one must stand out from the crowd. No filmmaker understands this better than Edgar Wright. His movies take on this life of their own, defined by calculated ingenuity. A booze soaked sci-fi invasion? Easy. A satirical zombie homage? Try overnight classic. Wright doesn’t just play in a sandbox, he creates living, breathing worlds out of lines in the sand – but even for Mr. Wright, Baby Diver boasts ambition at irreplicable volumes.
Ansel Elgort leads Wright’s action-comedy-heist as Baby, a getaway driver who suffers from tinnitus (a ringing noise only Baby can hear). This leads to constant iPod usage that keeps him focused (distracted), which Wright cues every single movement in Baby Driver to. Yes, you read correctly.
