Naomi Campbell is the latest big name from the modelling world to try her hand at reality TV, launching Sky Living's latest attempt at a 'Supermodel X Factor'.
Model reality shows in the UK have a patchy record and that's probably putting it politely. They can never truly compete with their Us counterparts when it comes to hideously mean judges, catty contestants and ludicrous melodrama over having to get your hair cut a couple of inches shorter.
Watch an extended preview of The Face:
Sky Living's signing of Campbell, modelling's most notorious and intriguing character, is probably the last roll of the dice for the format. If Campbell can't make a show about models interesting then I seriously doubt anybody can.
There are some promising early signs that The Face can be more than Next Top Model-lite.
Firstly, its format takes on the classic Voice twist...

Films often portray short hair on women as a product of illness, or even criminality. In Bonjour Tristesse, a young Jean Seberg showed the powerful message a short 'do can send out
Otto Preminger's lush CinemaScope melodrama Bonjour Tristesse, rereleased this week, is a showcase for gorgeousness. The Côte d'Azur glitters in pristine, vibrant Technicolor; Paris smoulders in smoky monochrome. But while the film's ostensible love triangle of Deborah Kerr, David Niven and Mylène Demongeot pose prettily on the Riviera in costumes by Givenchy and Hermès, the star of this show is 20-year-old Jean Seberg. In a chic cocktail dress or a swimsuit and a man's denim shirt, Seberg is radiantly beautiful, and with that signature pixie crop, unforgettably, arrestingly cool too.
A couple of years later, Seberg would take her best-known role, as the très moderne American girl Patricia in Jean-Luc Godard's À bout de souffle. It...

Erin O'Connor's Model Sanctuary is to reopen after the British Fashion Council (Bfc) stepped in to save the support centre for vulnerable aspiring catwalk stars.
The British beauty opened the London headquarters in 2007 to give young models a place to receive "discrete health guidance and educational support" from nutritionists, psychologists and fitness experts.
O'Connor was forced to close its doors in February over leasing issues, but now bosses at the Bfc have taken over the not-for-profit organisation.
Bfc chief executive Caroline Rush says, "The British Fashion Council has had a role in supporting the initiative over the past five years and Erin's vision and dedication has been an incredible driving force, ensuring the continued success of the Model Sanctuary... We will strive to ensure that this initiative continues to thrive and provide an essential space for models to rest and relax."
O'Connor has pledged to continue to back the sanctuary, telling Vogue.co.uk, "After years of beg, borrowing and stealing, opening a vein, arm-twisting and blagging in general, I'm delighted to not have the responsibility of arranging the venue this time.
"I will continue to support every project that aims to protect the young and more vulnerable members of our industry and I will always be happy to help where I can."...

Celebrated hair and fashion icon Vidal Sassoon has died at the age of 84.
The veteran stylist passed away at his Los Angeles home on Wednesday following an unspecified illness.
He had reportedly been diagnosed with leukaemia in 2009, although it is not known if the condition played a part in his death.
Born in London, Sassoon became a style pioneer in the 1960s for creating a simple and sleek geometric haircut, which became known as the 'bob'.
He was also famous for chopping off actress Mia Farrow's long locks for her role in Roman Polanski's horror film Rosemary's Baby.
Sassoon opened hair salons around the world and sold his name to pharmaceutical firm Procter & Gamble to release a line of hair products.
He became the subject of 2010 documentary Vidal Sassoon: The Movie, which chronicled his life and career.
Model Erin O'Connor was one of the first stars to pay tribute to Sassoon on Twitter.com, writing, "Rip Vidal Sassoon. Inspired so many, myself included."...

Catwalk queen Erin O'Connor has been forced to close her respite centre for vulnerable models after losing its headquarters in London.
The British supermodel launched the Model Sanctuary in 2008 to help young beauties with "discrete health guidance and educational support".
The original centre, which was based in Covent Garden and offered expert advice from nutritionists, psychologists and fitness instructors, was rented out on a long-term lease and last month O'Connor called for help to find new premises in time for the upcoming London Fashion Week.
However, her appeal was unsuccessful and she will be closing the centre.
She tells Vogue.co.uk, "For reasons beyond my control, The Model Sanctuary will not be operating during the forthcoming London Fashion Week February 2012.
"This is due to a combination of last minute changes to contributions from sponsors and, despite an incredible response from a number of loyal and enthusiastic supporters, we have been unable to find an alternative venue after our home of the last few seasons became subject to a long-term lease. As these issues have come to light in the last few weeks I am left with no time to rectify the situation.
"As I look forward, I have come to the conclusion that for The Model Sanctuary to continue successfully, the project requires and in fact deserves, the certainty of established premises for the period of each London Fashion Week... I urge the fashion industry, its partners and key stakeholders to help us secure a permanent home during London Fashion Week, so that we can continue our valuable work."...

Catwalk queen Erin O'Connor's respite centre for vulnerable models is at risk of closure after losing its headquarters in London.
The British supermodel launched the Model Sanctuary in 2008 to help young beauties with "discrete health guidance and educational support".
The centre was based in Covent Garden, where many model agencies are situated, and it offered expert advice from nutritionists, psychologists and fitness instructors to ensure working in the fashion world did not affect models' health and wellbeing.
Now O'Connor has urged landlords in the U.K. capital to help her find new premises in time for London Fashion Week next month after her original venue was rented out on a longterm lease.
She tells Vogue, "What we're looking for is a self-contained building with separate rooms and a communal space, so that we can hold our confidential forums and discussions.
"There also needs to be a space for our student newspaper to be made. As a non-profit organisation, we are wholly reliant on people's support, but I can personally promise... to restore the space back to its former glory once London Fashion Week is over. I'll be there with paintbrushes and cleaning tools!
"I hope we will be able to find a way to allow this exceptional and crucial project to continue."...

In the first story, a man is assaulted in Central Park, leading to a mounted police officer intervening and is shot. The horse escapes but is run over by a taxi and is still alive. Flack (Eddie Cahill) says he heard the shot from 6th Ave and it shook the windows of his car. Mac (Gary Sinise) explains it was the echo from the weapon, as if Flack wouldn't know that already. The policeman was shot through the back and through his vest by a sniper. Danny (Carmine Giovinazzo) and Aiden (Vanessa Ferlito) process the scene in search of the elusive bullet. Mac finds a mobile/cell phone, but no bullet and Danny takes the tapes from the cameras. Hawkes (Hill Harper) deduces the Cod was a single Gsw to the back, which left through the front, from a high powered rifle. His vest is examined to see where the...

Erin O'Connor's former assistant has been spared jail after she was sentenced to community service for defrauding the British supermodel out of $19,000 (£12,000).
The catwalk star, who boasts a reported $19 million (£12 million) fortune, became suspicious of Michelle Knox-Brown after noticing her extravagant spending. It was later revealed that the assistant had used the star's credit cards to fund a lavish lifestyle, paying for foreign holidays and refurbishments to her home.
Knox-Brown admitted two counts of fraud in March and was warned she faced a custodial sentence, but was spared jail on Tuesday when a judge at Kingston Crown Court in Surrey, England handed her 200 hours of unpaid community work and a 40-week suspended sentence.
She was also ordered to pay back $3,200 (£2,000) to the model within one month and return another $9,600 (£6,000) over the next two years.

Erin O'Connor's former assistant is facing a jail sentence after she admitted defrauding the British supermodel out of $19,000 (£12,000) while working for her.
The catwalk star, who boasts a reported $19 million (£12 million) fortune, became suspicious of Michelle Knox-Brown after noticing her extravagant spending.
It was later discovered the aide had used the model's credit card to withdraw cash from Atm machines and spent the money on foreign holidays and refurbishments to her home.
Knox-Brown appeared at Kingston Crown Court on Monday and pleaded guilty to two counts of fraud, totalling $19,000 (£12,000). A charge of stealing $9,280 (£5,800), which Knox-Brown denied, was dropped.
Judge Paul Dodgson told her, "You have pleaded guilty to very serious offences. You know they are serious. A custodial sentence is a very real possibility."
The court heard Knox-Brown intends to repay the money. She is due to be sentenced in April.

The British beauty, who has a reported $18 million (£12 million) fortune, became suspicious of Michelle Knox-Brown after she allegedly racked up nearly $12,000 (£8,000) in taxi bills.
Knox-Brown appeared at Kingston upon Thames Crown Court in England on Friday to face accusations of two counts of theft and two counts of fraud between 1 January, 2007 and 1 March, 2010.
The 45 year old "dishonestly abused her position" as an assistant after obtaining $45,300 (£30,200) by "stealing cash and making unauthorised purchases on a credit card belonging to Miss E. O'Connor", the court heard.
She was also accused of taking $10,650 (£7,100) in petty cash.
Knox-Brown was granted bail and is expected to stand trial in March, reports Britain's Daily Mail.
