“Parasite” dominated the 2020 Oscars early this year, becoming the first foreign-language film to win Best Picture as well as victories for Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best International Feature Film. That fact that is was the first South Korean film ever to compete for an Academy Award opens the door to plenty of other firsts.
“Parasite’s” triumphs will likely lead to more global titles competing beyond the designated category for foreign productions. It was just the 12th non-English film to compete for Best Picture in 92 years and the third this decade, following 2012’s French-language “Amour” and 2019’s “Roma” from Mexico.
Why did Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite,” which pitted two contemporary families — one poor and barely scrapping by, the other filthy rich and spoiled — against one another as the well-to-do parents and their children are played by the other clan as one by one they pretend to be...

Publicist Mara Buxbaum is still in a good mood two days after the Oscars and staying up all night in Koreatown as Bong Joon Ho and the team behind “Parasite” celebrated their historic four-Oscar win. Did Director Bong drink as promised? “We all did, we all drank all night,” said Buxbaum on the phone Tuesday. “We had so much fun, drinking Soju and beer. We ate and laughed and gave speeches. It was very moving.”
You can’t blame Buxbaum for being emotional. She’s the first to recognize that success has many fathers, and that when it came to pushing Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite” to Best Picture, Director, Original Screenplay and International Feature Film, “it takes a village.”
But Buxbaum did jump on board the “Parasite” train early. I ran into her back in Cannes in May, envious that she was hanging out with the Competition jury as the guest of Yorgos Lanthimos,...

“Cinema won tonight,” Neon head Tom Quinn said as he escorted his father to his waiting limo in the parking garage of the Soho House, where a long line of partygoers was still waiting well past 11 p.m. just to get inside to the wild and very packed celebration Quinn’s company had planned for its Oscar nominees, Parasite and Honeyland.
When I saw Quinn at the Indie Spirit Awards on Saturday, he knew it was going to be a good night on some level, but I can tell you he didn’t know it was going to be this good. As we were talking, another Neon associate arrived with the newly engraved Oscar for Best Picture that has Neon’s name on it. When major PR firms merge, they’re usually consolidating in order to stay on top. It’s a little different for former standalones Pmk-Bnc (which has merged at least four times in 40 years) and Rogers & Cowan: Both are owned by the publicly traded Interpublic Group (2018 revenue: $9.71 billion). Now, they will form a single firm (yet to be named) that will represent more than 500 clients and 30 brands.
So why the change? The combo creates a more impressive client list, and will allow them to trim the expenses and other redundancies that come when two entities merge. It’s the easiest and fastest way to become bigger while meeting the demands of their corporate overlords.
Of course, bigger is not always better. Still, when the new company officially launches January 1, it will dwarf Kelly Bush and Mara Buxbaum’s ID-pr. It will also become one of the top 20 PR firms in the world,...

The Telluride Film Festival is about a lot more than Oscars. Co-directors Tom Luddy and Julie Huntsinger certainly set out to program the year’s likeliest Oscar contenders, including Joe Wright’s Gary Oldman vehicle “Darkest Hour,” Greta Gerwig’s “Lady Bird,” starring Saoirse Ronan, Guillermo del Toro’s “The Shape of Water,” starring Sally Hawkins, and “Battle of the Sexes,” starring a luminous Emma Stone as real-life hero Billie Jean King.
But Telluride was also a crucible for conversations about the state of the motion picture industry throughout the weekend, as Netflix and Amazon threw parties and checked out several high-profile movies without distribution — including Francis Ford Coppola’s musically-enhanced “The Cotton Club Encore” — that banked on the festival boosting their critical and audience cred before top buyers.

Strangely dropping a press release on a historic day where the nation's attention is elsewhere, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed their annual list of new member invitees this morning. For those who criticize the makeup of the Academy there was some good news and the stark realization the organization still has a long way to go. The Academy has spent the last eight to 10 years attempting to diversify its membership and this year's class mostly reflects that. There are significantly more invitees of Asian and African-American descent, but the male to female disparity is still depressing. Out of the 25 potential new members of the Actor's Branch only seven are women. And, no, there isn't really an acceptable way for the Academy to spin that sad fact. Additionally, It's important to realize the 322 people noted in the release have only been invited to join Hollywood's most exclusive club.
