By any metric is Annie Baker one of American’s great living dramatists—it’s just a bit harder to notice when her chosen field is theater. But grab any of Baker’s plays (all of which are readily available!) to be enraptured by precisely drawn characters, honest portrayals of life’s difficult choices, and the absurdity of everyday conversation. Easy to suggest readers of this site seek her Pulitzer-winning The Flick, but a) I know hardly a recent representation of movie love that’s so accurate, b) maybe it’s easier to note she writes brilliantly on cinema and has good taste.
How wonderful, then, to hear from trusted sources that Baker’s finished shooting her first feature. Following one lead after another let us unearth some key details: it has an at-least-working title of Janet Planet, is produced by Dan Janvey (Nomadland), and per a casting call concerns “11 year old Lacy,...

If ever there was what we can affectionately call a “Sundance movie,” it is A Love Song, a micro-small, actor-driven heartfelt drama set in the rural west mountainous region of Colorado from first time feature writer/director Max Walker-SIlverman. Premiering in the Next section of the Sundance Film Festival tonight this is a deliberately paced look at two lonely lives of former childhood friends now leading a seemingly nomadic existence in the aftermath of grief over the loss of their individual spouses as they forge a tentative reunion that might – or might not – lead to romance, even as they have reached their senior years. In an odd way it is the perfect companion piece for last year’s Best Picture Oscar winner, Nomadland, a movie also set in the sparse surroundings of the Southwest and focusing on a particular character, now alone, heading out on the road following the end...

No Marvel movie has ever received Best Director recognition and only one feature from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, “Black Panther,” landed among the Best Picture nominees. But with an all-star cast led by Oscar-winner Angelina Jolie and reigning Best Director winner Chloe Zhao behind the camera, will Marvel’s “Eternals” help the comic book franchise make history?

Chloé Zhao on Making Oscars History and How She Stayed True to Herself Directing Marvel’s ‘Eternals’
On Monday morning, the day after making history with her two Oscar wins, Chloé Zhao is beaming. Her happiness is detectable even over Zoom. “It was just so, so beautiful to be in the room with people, and to be able to actually talk to them and to celebrate with my peers,” she says.
Not everything went as planned at the 93rd Academy Awards on Sunday night; witness the show not ending with the usual best picture category, instead unexpectedly honoring an actor, Anthony Hopkins, who wasn’t even there, as its climax. But at least one thing went very right: Zhao landed the trophy for best director for “Nomadland,” and also received the top prize for picture. Not everything went as planned at the 93rd Academy Awards on Sunday night; witness the show not ending with the usual best picture category, instead unexpectedly honoring an actor, Anthony Hopkins, who wasn’t even there, as its climax. It was 48 hours before the Oscar ceremony and Darius Marder was walking around Los Angeles. “This is one of the few times I’m just wandering around, getting the hell out,” he said.
The “Sound of Metal” writer and director, who was up for two awards and would win neither, had spent the last few days in a last-minute campaign sprint for his drama about a deaf addict while jugging a few commercial shoots. Talking on the phone while he wandered the streets, Marder spoke breathlessly about the psychological effect of getting an 11-year passion project made, only to reiterate that story in the endless zooming of a pandemic awards season.
“You spent a lot of time thinking about this final frontier of recognition, this peer acknowledgement. But here’s what I know,” he said. “What I know is that this film is what it is because I could give...

While it was widely expected for “Nomadland” to win Best Picture at the Oscars Sunday night, one piece of the film’s win did come as a major surprise — when exactly during the show the top Oscar was handed out. The 2021 ceremony marked the first time in nearly five decades that Best Picture was not presented at the very end of the ceremony.
Sunday’s statuette shuffle surprised even the “Nomadland” filmmakers, producer Dan Janvey told reporters in the virtual backstage press area. “It surely was a surprise. I think a lot of us grew up watching the Oscars and have gotten used to that being last. It was incredibly fun that they shook it up,” he said.

No thanks to the pandemic, it was a longer Oscar season than originally planned. Even though the Oscar ceremony was late this year, Searchlight fired off its campaign for Nomadland at the traditional starting point of early September, with the multi-festival debut of Nomadland at Venice, Toronto and a Telluride-sponsored drive-in screening at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.
Speaking at the virtual backstage after Sunday’s Best Picture Oscar win, Nomadland producer Peter Spears spoke about the feat of releasing this ultimate Best Picture winner during Covid.
“I view the ability to finish this movie in the midst of a pandemic and release it was a Herculean effort,” said the producer. “The timing was right and the story resonated for people about a community and our shared humanity. It would have had a deeper sort of meaning if it came out prior to that (the pandemic).”

“Nomadland” took home a historic big win Sunday night at the Academy Awards when it received the Best Picture Oscar: it’s only the second film directed by a woman in Oscars history to achieve a Best Picture victory. Director Kathryn Bigelow’s “The Hurt Locker” (for which Bigelow also became the first female Oscar winner for Best Director) was previously the only female-directed movie to do so. The prize for “Nomadland” at the Academy Awards on Sunday went to producer/director Chloé Zhao, producer/star Frances McDormand, and producers Peter Spears, Mollye Asher, and Dan Janvey. “Nomadland” marks Zhao’s third feature directorial effort following “Songs My Brother Taught Me” and “The Rider.” Zhao also won the Best Director prize earlier in the evening.
In the Best Picture category, “Nomadland” beat out “The Father,” “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Mank,” “Minari,” “Promising Young Woman,” “Sound of Metal,” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.

Sunday night’s Oscar ceremony was historic in more ways than one, making the 441-day wait for the 93rd Academy Awards well worth it.
“The Father” star Anthony Hopkins nabbed actor, Frances McDormand (“Nomadland”) took home the actress prize, Daniel Kaluuya (“Judas and the Black Messiah”) won for supporting actor and “Minari’s” Yuh-Jung Youn claimed supporting actress, becoming the first Korean actor to do so. Nine actors of color earned Academy Award nominations — an Oscar record for diversity in those categories — but only two won. Additionally, more women were nominated in 2021 than in any previous year.
“Nomadland’s” Chloé Zhao made history as well, becoming the second woman and the first woman of color to win an Oscar for directing. The film also won best picture.

The former award went to producers Mollye Asher, Dan Janvey, Frances McDormand, Peter Spears and Chloé Zhao, with Zhao also claiming prizes for Director and Editing, and Joshua James Richards taking home the statuette for Cinematography.
“In our film, Bob Wells says to [McDormand’s] Fern that you’ve come to the right place to connect with your tribe, your community,” said Asher, in her Best Picture acceptance speech, “and Independent Film, you are our community.”
“We couldn’t have done it without all the hearts and hands of our fellow collaborators, our fellow filmmakers, who were the Nomadland company,” added Janvey, “so to all of you, we accept this on your behalf.”

It’s been a strange year, but cinema endures. The 2021 British Academy Film and Television Awards took place at the Royal Albert Hall on the 11th of April, 2021. In a first in BAFTA history, four women have been nominated in the Director category, including Nomadland director Chloe Zhao, Sarah Gavron for Rocks, and Shannon Murphy for Babyteeth. Other notable nominees include Promising Young Woman, The Trial of the Chicago 7, The Father, Saint Maud and Minari. It is a diverse line up, and a very unusual time but the red carpets are rolling out, even if they are in living rooms around the world.
Yesterday director Ang Lee was entered into the BAFTA Fellowship, and Noel Clarke was awarded the Outstanding British Contribution to cinema. This evening Edith Bowman and Dermot O’Leary hosted the awards and it was a delight to see Yun-Jung Youn’s incredible win for her role in Minari.

However, last year was an exception to this rule, as 1917 won at PGA but lost out to Parasite at the Oscars. So it will be very interesting to see if PGA restores their Oscar-predicting power this time around.
During the PGA show, accepting the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures, one of Nomadland‘s producers Peter Spears said via video, “In a year when we have been living such isolated lives, we were proud to make a movie about community and what connects us… You honor the entire Nomadland company with this award….[including its] community of nomads that taught us about the power of resilience,...

A few minutes ago, the Producers Guild Awards concluded, and with that, we can now say with a fair amount of certainty that Nomadland is in the driver’s seat for Best Picture. The Academy Awards could still potentially throw a curveball, but the odds don’t favor that. Rather, it sure seems like this movie is the Oscar pick. Sit tight for the rest of the guilds to chime in, but if you had to pick a film to repeat with the Academy, Nomadland is the one, especially after PGA… Here’s all of the winners from the Producers Guild Awards: Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” (Amazon Studios) Producers: Sacha Baron Cohen, Monica Levinson, Anthony Hines “Judas and the Black Messiah” (Warner Bros) Producers: Charles D. King, Ryan Coogler, Shaka King “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” (Netflix) Producers: Denzel Washington, Todd Black...

The Producers Guild of America Awards awarded Chloé Zhao’s “Nomadland” with their top prize, one of the key indicators for the Academy Awards, particularly the best picture category. Edging out its closest competitors including Emerald Fennell’s “Promising Young Woman,” Lee Isaac Chung’s “Minari” and Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” this might just end any questions about whether or not the moving drama is running away with the Oscars’ big prize.
All the acceptance speeches were pre-recorded with “Nomadland” giving a more produced, glitzier presentation than what we’ve seen at other award shows.
It should be noted that last year’s “1917” from Sam Mendes lost the Oscar after wins from PGA and DGA to “Parasite,” which only had the coveted SAG cast ensemble prize under its belt. Coincidentally, “Nomadland” is not nominated at SAG in their top category, leaving an opening for...
