Smart House, a new horror from The Conjuring's James Wan, is about a family placed in a very special kind of witness protection...
Lionsgate has bought the rights to Smart House, a feature film idea from Saw and Furious 7 director James Wan, who is attached to produced the horror.
According to Variety, the film is based on an original idea from Wan about a family placed in witness protection in a smart house, capable of fighting off any attacks (hopefully). When a group of assassins discover the location of the family, the smart house's capabilities are put to the test.
Alexandre Aja is attached to direct the film. Aja is best known for his horror work on Horns, Piranha 3D, and The Hills Have Eyes. Smart House seems right up his alley, and will presumably skew more horror than action thriller. The script comes from Brad Keene,...

Shock pals Brad Keene and Brian Collins (over at Badass Digest) alerted me to a story that's too weird not to share with the rest of you. It seems there's a bus stop in England that's being called "home" by a lone copy of Hellraiser on VHS. That's a photo - courtesy of Peckham Peculiar - of the VHS which was reportedly first spotted on top of the bus stop in London. The copy has come and gone...and no one knows its story.

“From Within” is the first film from Phedon Papamichael as a director for nearly 15 years, following his forgettable early 1990s thrillers “Dark Side of Genius” and “Sketch Artist”. The time since has certainly been well spent, with Papamichael honing his craft as one of the top cinematographers in the business, having worked on the likes of “Sideways”, “Walk the Line”, “W” and “3:10 to Yuma” as director of photography. Perhaps having learned his lessons, he has here returned behind the camera in a different way with a slice of Bible belt horror as suicides and ghostly visions torment a small Christian community in the American south. Interestingly enough, despite the setting, the film draws its influences quite obviously from the recent wave of modern Asian ghost chillers, perhaps unsurprisingly given that writer Brad Keene was also recently responsible for remake non-sequel “The Grudge 3”. The film begins with a young goth teen eating his gun,...

Thomas Dekker from the Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles goes from fighting cyborgs from the future to battling evil curses in director Phedon Papamichael’s horror movie “From Within”. The film will be released on DVD in the UK from E1 Entertainment on 24th August 2009. It’s already available in the States through the After Dark Horrorfest label. Written by Brad Keene (The Grudge 3) and directed by Phedon Papamichael (better known as the Director of Photography on numerous Hollywood hits including Oliver Stone’s W., 3:10 To Yuma, Walk The Line and Sideways), the gripping supernatural shocker, From Within, stars Thomas Dekker (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles; Laid To Rest), Elizabeth Rice (Mad Men), Adam Goldberg (Zodiac; Two Days In Paris) and Laura Allen (Dirt; The 4400) in a darkly disturbing tale guaranteed to put the frighteners on fans of recent horror blockbusters such as the Final Destination trilogy,...

As if any more proof were needed, The Grudge 3—the third in the American series based on Takashi Shimizu’s Japanese screen quartet, the first to go direct to DVD and the first of any of these not helmed by Shimizu—demonstrates that this concept has been well and truly exhausted. Particularly given that this sequel was created not by untried up-and-comers or music-video graduates, but a couple of guys who have shown themselves to have true horror chops.
The Grudge 3 was directed by Toby Wilkins and scripted by Brad Keene, who held those posts respectively on Splinter and From Within, two of the smarter and more satisfying independent fright films to emerge in the last year. Yet even their best efforts are defeated by the necessity of adhering to a formula that has now become familiar well past the point of banality. No matter what the context,...

Chicago – Lionsgate and After Dark Films’ recently released their third collection of “8 Films to Die For” and this year proved to be the most uninspiring octet to date. With fewer risks taken than the last two years and less extreme failures or successes, “After Dark Horrorfest III” is terrifyingly dull.
Overall DVD Rating: 2.0/5.0 What makes this year’s collection rather forgettable is the lack of extremes on either side of the rating spectrum. The first two years produced some truly excellent genre gems including “Borderland,” “The Hamiltons,” and “The Abandoned.” At the same time, movies like “Dead Lake,” “Undead,” and “Nightmare Man” should be buried in a deep hole and never see the light of day again.
I have to admit that I liked the variety in quality of the last two years more than this year, when nearly every film registered as forgettable more than good or bad. There was one notable standout,...

From Within is not a perfect film by any means but it's easily the best movie from the After Dark Horrorfest III line-up. On the surface, it's about a suicide curse that infects an intensely religious small town in Southern America but there is a strong subtext about how fear and religious fervor can make people do unimaginable evil. Actually, it's very similar to the basic theme running through The Mist and as I watched it I thought to myself that this would be the kind of story that Stephen King would like.

Those who come to The Gravedancers expecting the off-the-wall, black-humored insanity of director Mike Mendez’s previous The Convent should be advised: This is a much more straightforward supernatural tale. Which is not to say that Mendez has mellowed, just that here he’s tackling material (a script by Brad Keene and Chris Skinner) which largely takes its horrors seriously. And the energy of his filmmaking hasn’t waned; back when he first announced the project, Mendez compared it to an adult version of the Haunted Mansion ride at Disneyland, and once it gets cooking, The Gravedancers does indeed play like a cinematic amusement-park spook ride. Without self-consciously homaging the films of decades ago, it harks back to the days when horror movies had fun scaring you, yet didn’t wink at the camera or employ self-conscious humor to do so.
Appropriately enough, the story begins with a funeral, and...

A small community in Grovetown has been hit with a series of suicides. While some believe that there is nothing to be feared about, others figure out the hard way that the fear does not lay only in their imagination. Instead, it is the real deal and it comes within themselves. Those are the base of "From Within" plot outed through the film's new trailer.
The less than two minutes video footage first displays that there is an oddity in the rising number of suicide death in a small town of Grovetown. Then, it is suggested that the rash of suicides may be caused by the town's secret which is a curse. The trailer continues to expose how some people in the town are haunted by their own selves.
