On the feature documentary Showrunners: The Art of Running a TV Show (2014), creator Matthew Carnahan reveals that his original pitch of the show didn't had a female lead character. Because FX was looking for shows with women as center characters, Carnahan agreed to rewrite it to create Lucy Spiller and work with Courteney Cox. The creator says this was the first of several concessions he made on the show, and described his relationship with FX's President and General Manager, John Landgraf, as difficult, to the point that he hasn't seen the second season of the show, because it had changed so much.
